1561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Want to save Bitcoin? Here's how YOU can help. on: August 07, 2011, 08:22:04 PM
There are many unique aspects to Bitcoin. For a few months, it was exposed to a quickly. growing audience and, consequently, grew in value, which in turn made it attractive to investors, who inflated the value even more. It now appears that many speculators are getting out. Those of us still willng to use bitcoins as currency are trading it for goods and services, and I, for one, only trade it for USD when necessary. As more and more merchants join the movement, I expect this necessity to diminish.

BitBrew is doing its part to stabilze the BTC economy by keeping prices static, come hell or high water.

If you trade

Says the guy selling a $20USD cup of coffee. Through the internet. Like it or not, you have to deal with the fact that BTC can be traded for other currencies.

Sorry, but I don't understand any part of your reply.

I think he's trying to say that you said that BTC shouldn't be allowed to be converted into other currencies and he pointed out your coffee pricing for...some reason.  Anyways, you obviously weren't saying that and he was just using a straw man against you.

Anyways, I agree with you edd. All these people who worry about BTC's USD value and complain when they can buy a product cheaper with USD than with BTC are doing nothing to help to economy.  People who SELL products with BTC and not just hoard them so they can cash out some day are the real BTC heroes.

Yes, it does make a little more sense if I had said something completely different.  Tongue

Just to clarify: I sell premium organic and fair trade coffee, mostly in 8 ounce and 12 ounce packages. Anyone interested can do a little research and see that, even at an exchange rate of 1 BTC = $20, my prices are much more affordable than anything else out there. That is how I'm encouraging participation in the bitcoin economy.

1564  Other / Meta / Re: New Idea for "Vendors" Subforum on: August 05, 2011, 03:26:20 PM
There's also The Bitcoin List, which provides visitors the opportunity to rate and review.

I admit, it needs some work and I've fallen behind in adding site links but new vendors and merchants can always submit their info via the contact page.

1566  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Make No Mistake: MyBitcoin is NOT Back Up! on: August 05, 2011, 03:14:21 PM
That really does not make sense though.  Any communications is a chance to create a leak.  Once someone decided to split and hide they would remain dark.
Not if the community already knows EXACTLY who you are...

You need time to make travel arrangements...  and move loads of money...

We must NOT give him that time.    The police nabbing him/them fast is the best chance of recovering all that stolen money.
Yes, but I don't see the point of constantly bashing him either. There is no definitive proof that he is lying about anything. As you have already stated on your program, he's been here for a longer time than most of us are, and there is reason to trust him/them. I had thought your live announcement was premature, and I think this ongoing talk about it still is.

By the way, does the community really know EXACTLY who they are? I mean, really... Considering the likely (or remotely likely?) scenario that they have really lost some of the coins, and want to work on saving their reputation, let's not destroy it beforehand. I still have respect for the MyBitcoin name, and will use their services if they recover. Also, otherwise, why would he even want to fix the problem?

For the most part, this is how I feel. Where we differ, however, is in the fact that I will not be using mybitcoin.com anymore - not for security reasons or fear of fraud, but due to the total disregard for customer concerns mybitcoin.com has displayed. If those running the site never visited these forums, then that was another mistake they made. To say their customer service is poorly handled would be an extreme understatement. Having any interest in their customers would necessarily require some interest in the discussions going on here. The statement released just a few hours ago doesn't even include an apology of any sort!

Criminal, incompetent, or victim - mybitcoin.com's days were numbered simply from a customer relations standpoint.
1567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the Best Safest Easiest Most Trustworthy Web-based Wallet for Non-Techie on: August 04, 2011, 05:54:09 PM
Use mtgox.com and a yubikey.

Do you still trust mt. gox after they acted like paypal and reversed all transactions done for a certain amount of time for nothing.

Yes I still trust MtGox, and I would go so far as to say the "reversed all transactions done for a certain amount of time for nothing" was THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

It should be obvious by now that it was the proper course of action. The bitcoins weren't real and not reversing the trades would have just been perpetuating the fraud.

How many btc do you want?  I will buy some for you and let you pay me w\ cash via usps priority.  Or paypal w\ 3 types of identification and a picture of you + id holding a fish.

Now that's not really fair.

He might not feel comfortable sending you a picture of his ID.
1569  Other / Off-topic / Re: I stand behind Matthew. on: August 03, 2011, 10:10:49 PM
Matthew is one of the most passionate and qualified businessmen in this community. I've personally shared life stories with the gentleman and he has a lot on his plate at the moment -- more than one could usually handle -- but I am confident he is going to bring a lot of value to Bitcoin as a whole.

He has my reverence.

Godspeed.

And Bruce endorsed Mybitcoin.com. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with this thread.
1570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Freedom and Responsibility - or: why you FAILED if you lost money in MBC crash on: August 02, 2011, 09:46:09 PM
...remember how hundreds of accounts were cleaned out, all to the same address, and not a single automated red flag regarding fraud was triggered, letting through all the payments? How such an obvious fraudulent transaction went through, and was claimed to have been 'stopped manually', with no real security measures in place?

Can you tell me more about this event?  Was it the one posted by "Todd Bethell"?

I'm curious about this, as well. I don't recall this.
1571  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Possible Escrow Bankruptcy Case on: August 02, 2011, 01:42:22 PM
Does anybody knows any additional way to contact bitlex and smoketoomuch?

What if they don't show up? How long should I wait?

Where's the fire? You only pm'ed them 24-25 hours ago.

Patience is a virtue.
1572  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Possible Escrow Bankruptcy Case on: August 02, 2011, 12:20:03 AM
I am going to ahead with the bankruptcy process.

I think the largest debtor I have is SmokeTooMuch.

That's your prerogative but it hasn't even been 72 hours since the site went offline.

78. you start telling the bill collectors you'll pay them as soon as mybitcoin.com is back online.
1574  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ringworld by Larry Niven on: August 01, 2011, 11:32:33 PM
Yeah, I'm afraid it's downhill after that. (IMO, of course.)
1575  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ringworld by Larry Niven on: August 01, 2011, 09:25:02 PM
AFAIK, the other Known Space books don't involve the same characters or Ringworld at all, they just take place in the same shared universe and might mention something from them in passing but that's it.

I could be wrong, though; I've read all the Ringworld books but not the other ones.
1576  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mybitcoin down or just me? on: August 01, 2011, 01:28:28 AM
And I hope we all move all our money to some place else where they have dedicated staffs and multiple communication lines.

paid by who? afaik mybitcoin did not charge anything, there was no income to support dedicated staff.
if it is a one man show and someone else did his homework and visited him first, he might have been hijacked. attack vector via the site operator, hope he is alive.

otoh after their previous poblems with server performance and not being accessible few weeks ago (mid June, site was up but login did not work) he at least wrote a few lines note about the ongoing upgrade on the first page which worked back then. what is strange is that the June maintenance was about adding servers and it looks like they only use 1 ip address. this should not be a problem to arranche a load balancing device that would mask the whole bunch of servers behind one address, it's just strange that not even the first page shows up. hope it's just a technical problem still and the site operator is on vacation not knowing about the problem.

https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17411.0 the June thread

Pretty please let hope that. And I am going to find a better service.

One man operation, no dedicated support staff is not worth the freebies.

There's no reason to believe this was a one man show or that there was no support staff. Income was generated by text ads.

Granted, they weren't very good at their job...
1577  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mybitcoin down or just me? on: July 31, 2011, 05:36:09 PM
Todd, I believe a new thread would be more appropriate for your post. It was not in reply to anyone else's nor does it address the OP's issue.

He spammed al mybitcoin related topics with the same post.

I see. How trollish.
1578  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoinproducts4sale.com on: July 31, 2011, 05:31:29 PM
Yeah I would really like it to show up on first page of keyword BITCOIN at least, I just have no editing abilities I dont think by using this Plesk Desktop Sitebuilder software, working on META TAGS, HTML editing see if I can get this on google, that is my biggest obstacle right now I think.  I will add that string on the main home page, that might hep for sure, it does show up on google by typing in the website so that string works, but not keywords.

Your competing with a lot of other sites for just "Bitcoin," mine included. You need to narrow your focus and work toward that. What question does your site answer? Imagine someone performing a search and ending up at your site and saying, "That is exactly what I was looking for!" What phrase would that person have typed into their search box?

1580  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin.com, where did it go? on: July 31, 2011, 04:11:10 AM
Fortunately, I don't have much in my account with mybitcoin ATM but I still hate losing any BTC.

That being said, I'm willing to wait until Monday at least before entertaining thoughts of persecution or investigation. Don't get me wrong, the downtime is very inconvenient and their customer response time is atrocious, but some people do still take the weekend off, after all.

You're a curious one, indeed.  You are well aware of the troubles I and others had with mybitcoin weeks ago. You even participated on those threads, and yet you still left money with Pirate Tom.  Did you think we were making it all up?  Didn't it occur to you that your money might be next?

I had money in mybitcoin before anyone posted any problems with them and had not one single satoshi go missing at any point between now and then. The only issue I experienced was some downtime. I even asked a question once through the internal messaging system and got a reply (although it was a week later, hence my "atrocious customer response time" comment). Excuse me if I base my opinions of them on my own experiences instead of others' hearsay.
