Bullish pennant there?

(i dunno, i just thought i'd add some wall observing)
I don't see a wall

But the fork, was that the purpose of the attack or accidental? Was he relying on the fact that it would be a while before anyone noticed?

Sounds to me as though mayhem was the intention.

The fork was the intention and the net-effect. They would have had to mine two of those blocks in parallel and dump them both on the network. It's such a bizarre, unknown, unidentified edge-case that I can't imagine someone stumbling across this AND figuring out how to exploit it (and to what end??). There's no monetary gain to the attacker,

No monetary gain for the attacker?
What if they consider monero to be a potential bitcoin killer and they have vast interest in the succes of bitcoin?

and with the hike in fees to mitigate the previous attack I can only imagine that this would've cost them a pretty penny.

Same as the above

Just made my first ever XMR purchase - 5 minutes of XMR dev time for attack mitigation and security.

Thanks, devs!!

This kind of post is such good news.  Today made the coin, and community, incalculably stronger :-)

Well, I also just made my first purchase, but they are locked on BTER because I can't withdraw.
Very good first impression!

(1) Don't buy XMR on BTER, and
Too late, I just deposit some satoshis, did a market buy monero and went for withdrawal, basically a hit and run.

Can someone advise me on a place where I can do a hit and run which actually works? I don't want to have them locked up somewhere online.

Poloniex. I never hold funds on exchanges.

I cannot create an account.
The website is stuck at:
https://poloniex.com/signup_validate.php

Am I under personal attack or something? Smiley

how come it doesnt work? i think bter make you pay a 1% fee on withdrawal so that may be the reason why you cant withdraw? maybe you're withdrawing too much? otherwise, whats the error msg?

XMR deposit is disabled 因技术维护,虚拟币充值暂停,感谢您谅解和支持。

translated:
XMR deposit is disabled due to technical maintenance, the virtual currency recharge pause, thank you for your understanding and support.

I'm trying to withdraw 2 digits of XMR.

edit: never did a personal transaction through this forum but I think I might want to try this as well, or shouldn't I?

The impression came when everything else already happened.

Why can't I withdraw monero from BTER? Anyone else got this problem?

One thing is not really clear to me and excuse me that I don't want to read all the pages of this thread.
I could not find it on the website as well.

How do I recover my private key? I got a bunch of words which is representing my private key, I wrote them down and stored them, but is there any other way to look into a file on my computer to find these words again?

edit: nevermind, I restarted the client with ./simplewallet and was asked about wallet.bin

1590  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 04, 2014, 08:32:38 PM
Code:
bash: ./simplewallet: No such file or directory
Type
Code:
cd ~/bitmonero/build/release/src && ls -l
And look if you have a simplewallet file. If you don't, it probably means the compilation went wrong. Thus start compiling again and post the errors (or pastebin the whole text).
If you do have a simplewallet file, something is very wrong here.
Well, today I tried to follow instructions at monero.cc again, and now everything worked!
I guess the source code was bugged earlier because I did exactly the same this time:
Code:
cd ~ && rm -f install_monero.sh && wget http://monero.cc/downloads/install_monero.sh && bash install_monero.sh

Thanks for the help anyway

Finally, to any hacker out there... good luck stealing my Bitcoins hahahaha Grin

Yes, please hack the shit out of bitcoin. Kill it. Please do, don't wait 30 years. I'm serious.
This shit should be totally indestructible and it pretty much looks like it actually is.

 Embarrassed

1593  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 04, 2014, 04:11:30 PM
Why would you want to use flawed money?
There can't be enough hackers trying to exploit bitcoin and attack it.
I want it to be attacked to the max.
If it still exists after that, it has proven itself.

The problem is not hackers breaking the bitcoin protocol, it is hackers stealing your bitcoins.

Bitcoin is worse than other forms of payment in ths regard because the theft is instantaneous, can be fully automated, has no limitations of place, time, or amount, cannot be reversed, and the thief does not have to expose himself.   Furthermore, it may be impossible even to convince the police that the coins were yours and that they were indeed stolen; and the police will probably be unable to do anything about it.
It's a feature, not a bug.
Now we not know all the features yet because bitcoin is in it's infancy.
You should not invest more than you are willing to lose completely if everything fails.

Quote
In contrast, cash theft requires the thief to physically handle the money.  Bank or credit card fraud requires sending the stolen data to the thief and the thief exposing himself in order to actually complete the theft; there is then a window of several hours, at least, during which the fraudulent transfer can be blocked or reversed.
We're talking about bitcoin, I don't care about stolen candy bars either.

Quote
If even expert bitcoiners can have their coins stolen by hackers, imagine having millions of non-tech-savy users, each with thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin in their wallets on windows machines.  Hardware wallets like Trezor can help, but there are dozens of ways of getting around them.

Well maybe it sounds stupid for a lot of people, but I don't really feel sorry for people who keep thousands of dollar worth of bitcoin in a hot wallet.
In my opinion you should only keep some pocket change in a hot wallet.
There are ways to store bitcoins extremely secure into cold wallets.

Bitcoin is speculative, we don't know and certainly we did not get used to all the features of bitcoin yet to call it safe under all circumstances we currently use for exchanging value to one another.

Does somebody know if the poll was about this week or next?
1596  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 04, 2014, 02:59:33 PM
It has probably already been discussed, but is theft really bad? I mean, most of the times it's immoral, but evolution doesn't have anything to do with morality.
In a certain way you can see it as survival of the fittest. If hackers are smart enough to steal bitcoin it sucks if it happens to you, but bitcoin also gives the opportunity to store them extremely safe, unable to hack.

If a hacker was able to crack the complete bitcoin code, he should be awarded because honest money should be more or less indestructible.

Well, if hackers actually deserve to be rewarded for stealing all our money, why should we bother about governments and banks stealing only 30% of it?  If they managed to get hold of the biggest guns, they are the fittest, right?  Tongue

Now we still use this inferior toilet paper shit which has proven to be flawed thousands of times.

I know that you are very skeptical of bitcoin's longterm success. If you have the time, you may want to watch the video by Ted Nelson. He coined the term "hypertext" and "hypermedia" in 1963. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Nelson
Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CMucDjJQ4E

I watched the video yesterday.  Yes, it is a very nice presentation.

It's good that he avoids the exaggerated sales hype of most bitcoin enthusiasts.  However it seems he has been listening from one ear only, as he barely mentions some of the problems, or omits them altogether.  Like the impossibility of correcting mistakes or thefts.
