161  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The difference between science and religion on: October 01, 2018, 12:29:35 PM
Science investigates the natural world, while religion deals with the spiritual and supernatural — hence, the two can be complementary. Many religious organizations have issued statements declaring that there need not be any conflict between religious faith and the scientific perspective on evolution.
This is not to suggest that science and religion never come into conflict. Though the two generally deal with different realms (natural vs. spiritual), disagreements do arise about where the boundaries between these realms lie when dealing with questions at their interface. And sometimes, one side crosses a boundary in its claims

If science wants to ignore such things as spirit, soul, supernatural, it isn't really science. Rather, it is a religion of limited investigation.

Cool

There is no data; no science can be done on the subject of spirits, souls, and supernatural.

They do not exist.

The data starts with a person's emotions, his mind, and his drive. These are in great evidence all over the place all the time.

Science has investigated emotions, mind, etc... Science has concluded that these are chemical reactions taking place in the body...

Can you precisely explain how is God is an explanation for any of this?

Another day, another christian convicted of sexually abusing children

Leader of Militant “Aggressive Christianity” Cult Gets 72 Years for Child Sex Abuse
http://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2018/09/29/leader-of-militant-aggressive-christianity-cult-gets-72-years-for-child-sex-abuse/

Quote
When you hear about “militant atheists,” it’s usually in reference to people who argue online about how gods aren’t real. “Militant Christians,” on the other hand, are a different story.

In this case, Deborah Green, the leader of a “paramilitary religious sect” in New Mexico — Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps — was sentenced to 72 years in prison after being convicted in a child sex abuse case. Green dresses like a military officer and is called “the General” by her followers.

The case involved a victim who was reportedly kidnapped from Uganda as a baby, then abused and mistreated for years. The victim gave an emotional testimony at the hearing for Green’s sentencing, asking the judge to give her the maximum sentence.

“Emotionally, she broke me as a child to the point where I still today struggle with my own self-confidence, my self-esteem, my sense of worth,” the victim said.

The victim further spoke about what she described as years of torture by Green that she continues to struggle recovering from physically and emotionally, adding she’s had 11 surgeries to help fix broken bones.

“I’m reminded of how much I have to fight myself every day to not be sunken down into that low place again,” the victim said.

The victim asked District Court Judge James Sanchez to give 71-year-old Green the maximum sentence of 108 years.

Instead, he gave Green 72 years for three counts of child rape, two counts of kidnapping and one count of child abuse.

''nobody has offered real proof that evolution exists.'' You keep saying that but a scientific theory cannot exist without proof, why would those 30-40% of scientists that believe in god accept evolution then?

Why would you bump this thread?

You already know the response you will get from the town fool, right?

The Jehovah’s Witnesses Must Pay $35,000,000 to Abuse Survivor, Says Jury
http://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2018/09/28/the-jehovahs-witnesses-must-pay-35000000-to-abuse-survivor-says-jury/

Quote
Decades ago, at least two girls were allegedly abused by one of their family members. They handled the situation the only way they knew how: They told elders in the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Those elders didn’t alert outside authorities. Instead, they expelled the abuser from the congregation for all of one year before letting him back in. The abuse continued, as anyone would expect.

He never faced any real punishment.

The girls later filed a lawsuit against the religious organization claiming the Witnesses were “negligent and violated a Montana law that requires them to report abuse to outside authorities.”

A jury has now ruled in favor of one of the victims, saying the Witnesses owe her $35 million for what they did:

The jury awarded the 21-year-old woman $4 million for her injuries, plus $30 million in punitive damages against Watchtower and $1 million in punitive damages against the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, another Jehovah’s Witness corporation that communicates with congregations across the U.S.

The monetary award must be reviewed by the trial judge and could be reduced. A Montana law caps punitive damage awards at 3 percent of a company’s net worth or $10 million, whichever is less. A legal challenge to that law is pending before the Montana Supreme Court.

48% of White Evangelicals Would Support Kavanaugh Even If He Assaulted Dr. Ford
http://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2018/09/27/48-of-white-evangelicals-would-support-kavanaugh-even-if-he-assaulted-dr-ford/

Quote
According to a NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll taken last week, 48% of white evangelical Christians say that Kavanaugh should be confirmed to the Supreme Court even if the charge of sexual assault is true.

I repeat: Nearly half of white evangelicals want Kavanaugh on the Court even if they believe he attempted to rape a girl when he was younger. Only 36% of them said it would be a dealbreaker while 16% were unsure. As if his guilt would still present some doubt as to whether he deserves a promotion.

If that doesn’t tell you the depths of their moral depravity, I don’t know what does.

(Incidentally, 54% of Republicans said they would vote to confirm Kavanaugh even if he sexually assaulted her. No other sub-group had numbers as high as Republicans and white evangelicals.)

Sad... quite sad
166  Other / Politics & Society / Re: blacks have lower IQ than whites on: September 28, 2018, 12:05:16 PM
From the studies I've seen, highest IQ among races.

1. whites
2. asian
3. jews
4. latinos
5. indians
6. blacks

I have never seen a single study about IQ which places whites above asians... never

Asians have been shown to have an average IQ of 10+ points higher than whites in every study

For example, this study shows Korea and Japan with an average IQ of 105+, US with 97, and US Catholics at only 90... no surprise that Catholics have a lower IQ than average Americans

Every study I have seen shows asians about 10 points higher than whites, non-religious about 10 points higher than religious, and whites about 10 points higher than blacks... I wouldn't brag if I were you

Also note, US whites are about 10-15 IQ points lower than whites from the Netherlands, an atheist country... coincidence?
167  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I am muslim, is there a problem? on: September 28, 2018, 11:40:38 AM
Also the percentage of Muslims that contribute money to or actively support terrorist groups in certain countries is well above 50%.

I seriously doubt that... do you have a link/source to support such an outrageous claim that "well above 50% of Muslims contribute money to support terrorists"?!?

Since guybrushthreepwood said it so eloquently, I will just copy his reply here

Well the problem is people's ignorance and xenophobia and there's little you can do about that unfortunately. Just know that the root of such Islamophobia (or racism dressed up as a dislike of religion) is misplaced hatred. Deep down they hate themselves and need somebody else to blame for their failings in life so they blame people who are different to them such as foreigners or people with a different viewpoint or religious belief. They're usually too stupid to look in the mirror and realize the only person they should be blaming is themselves, but that's ignorance for you. I hear it's bliss.

Why was the flood necessary?

What flood?

Chinese history goes back more than 5000 years, and makes no mention of a worldwide flood.  If there was a worldwide flood that killed everyone except 9 people (who were clearly not Chinese), China would not have such a history.

Biblical flood myth disproved by science... easy peasy

''Biblical flood myth disproved by science'' That wont work with badecker, we are past scientific evidence. Only thing left is to make him realize how stupid and illogical it is.

It amazes me that someone denies evolution, but believes the flood killed all but 9 people (all from the same family)... and within a couple thousand years we have Chinese, whites, blacks, Indians, and all sorts of variations...

That is literally evolution, except even faster than science proposes it happened... no scientist would claim that all the races on earth evolved in only ~3000 years, but religion claims this happened... yet denies evolution exists at the same time... quite a paradox

Hello;

Please I want to discuss a very important topic, it's about the relation between Islam and extremism.

I Don't know why people are still believing that all muslims are terrorists, or extremists, I know that the majority of Muslim countries suffers from lack of democracy, but people and youth in these countries know crypto, use Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Instagram… etc. listen to music, have boy or girlfriend, etc.

I personally suffer from those haters especially when I travel.

So, Where is the problem? I Don't know?
A lot of us have suffered from Muslim haters, too. So don't play the innocent victim please.

Ain't that the pot calling the kettle black?

You say, "don't play the innocent victim please", but you are pretending you have "suffered from Muslim haters, too"... lmfao... what Muslim has caused you suffering?  I'd love to hear that fucking lie

Hillary Clinton couldn't beat a turd sandwich in an election... people HATE her with a passion... she is the quite literally, the worst presidential candidate in the history of the country... millions of people who voted for a black man refused to vote for her... yes, she is THAT bad

Trump didn't win the election, Hillary lost the election... Hillary would have lost to anyone, literally anyone

Nominating Hillary in 2020 would be a surefire way to get Trump re-elected

Did Brett Kavanaugh give false testimony under oath?

Democratic senators allege that Kavanaugh gave untruthful testimony at his prior confirmation hearings for the appeals court, which were held in 2004 and 2006, and that those untruths disqualify him as a Supreme Court nominee.

They say Kavanaugh misled senators into believing he had no role in the selection and vetting process for three of Bush’s most controversial candidates for the federal courts: Jim Haynes, Charles Pickering and Bill Pryor. Democrats also say Kavanaugh misled the Judiciary Committee in 2006 about his knowledge of a Bush-era warrantless surveillance program run by the NSA to monitor terrorists.

The overarching accusation is that Kavanaugh whitewashed his record, distancing himself from thorny political events instead of owning up to his role. A cache of emails and documents that have been released over the last few weeks proves Kavanaugh did not tell the truth, Democrats say. At his confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court this month, Kavanaugh rejected these allegations, and the White House has denied them.

“Time and again, Kavanaugh appears to have misled the Senate under oath,” Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), a former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed on Sept. 13.

Five Times Brett Kavanaugh Appears to Have Lied to Congress While Under Oath

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has made declarations under oath during his current and past confirmation hearings that are contradicted by documents from his time as a counsel to the president and staff secretary in the George W. Bush White House. Newly released documents have undermined Kavanaugh’s declarations to the Senate Judiciary Committee, contradictions that are drawing close scrutiny from many Democrats. Kavanaugh has denied making any misleading or false statements.

His role in accessing stolen documents: In 2002, a GOP aide on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Manuel Miranda, stole thousands of documents belonging to the committee’s Democratic staff. At the time, Kavanaugh was a White House lawyer working on judicial nominations, which included working alongside Miranda. In 2003, President Bush nominated Kavanaugh to his current position on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals and his confirmation hearing was held in 2004—though he was not confirmed until two years later. During his 2004 hearing, Kavanaugh denied ever receiving any of the documents Miranda stole. Asked if he “ever come across memos from internal files of any Democratic members given to you or provided to you in any way?” he replied, “No.” In 2006, also under oath, he again denied ever receiving stolen documents.

But newly released documents show that Miranda had indeed sent Kavanaugh information from the stolen internal documents. The nominee continues to deny he knew the information was stolen. But he can no longer deny he received it.

Hi, my name is Jb, and I’m a Christian, as you know, the bible teaches about correctable and not correctable people, about saved people and lost boys, about children of the lord and children of the devil, in other words there are immortals and mortals, and both are evil, however immortals can change, I mean we can be less evil, unfortunately mortals can’t, I mean they can’t stop their rebellion...

Wait, what?  The bible says no such thing... where in the bible does it say there are mortal and immortal people/souls?  Where does it say anyone is not savable?

The bible says every soul can be saved... the bible says every soul is immortal (either eternity in heaven, or eternity in hell... there is no non-eternity option)

Even if it did... what makes you so certain you are one of the immortals and not mortal?  Just because you think it sounds like a better choice, doesn't mean you are it

Why do you say, "we" in reference to immortals, and "they" in reference to mortals?  How do you even tell the difference?

Why do I know more about what the bible says than people who believe that rubbish is true?
178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Christianity is Poison on: September 25, 2018, 01:27:04 PM
The religion itself is, quite questionable nowadays. But morals people get from the faith are quite nice.

People who get their morals from the bible are lucky they are not in prison...

The bible teaches people how to own slaves, how to beat your slaves, etc...

The bible says to take your disobedient child to the edge of town and stone him to death...

The bible says a woman who is raped must marry her rapist...

The bible says if your brother dies, you must marry his wife...

The bible says a lot of crazy shit... if you read the bible and aren't completely insane... congrats

Priest Who Thinks Gay People Should Be Put to Death Burns a Rainbow Flag
http://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2018/09/19/priest-who-thinks-gay-people-should-be-put-to-death-burns-a-rainbow-flag/

Quote
A priest who thinks homosexuals should be put to death, like the Bible says, has cut up and burned a rainbow pride flag… ignoring direct orders from the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Rev. Paul Kalchik, a Roman Catholic priest at Resurrection Parish in Chicago, announced earlier in the month that he would burn a rainbow flag that was previously displayed at the church (seen below during the church’s inaugural Mass). He reportedly compared the Church’s “homosexual scandal” to a modern Sodom and Gomorrah.

But the higher-ups at the Church vowed to stop to the ridiculous stunt before he went through with it.

When the Archdiocese of Chicago got wind of Kalchik’s plans to burn the rainbow flag, it told him he could not proceed. “We can confirm that the pastor has agreed not to move forward with these activities,” Anne Maselli, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Chicago, told The Windy City Times.

But despite the archdiocese’s request, Kalchik and some of his parishioners did move forward and burned the flag last Friday.

Kalchik, who has been with the church for 11 years, has been consistently anti-gay and clearly felt threatened by the presence of a rainbow flag. This one in particular had been hanging in Resurrection Parish since 1991 as a sign of respect to the local LGBTQ community. Kalchik’s insecurities drove him to destroy it even though Church leadership threatened to fire him.

“We [burned the flag] in a private way, a quiet way, so as not to bring the ire of the gay community down upon this parish,” Kalchik said in a lengthy interview Monday with NBC News. “It’s our full right to destroy it, and we did so privately because the archdiocese was breathing on our back.”

“We put an end to a depiction of our Lord’s cross that was profane,” he added, noting the flag had a cross and a rainbow intertwined. To use the image of the cross as anything other than a “reminder of our Lord’s passion and death,” he said, “is what we consider a sacrilege.”

Kalchik said that the archdiocese had told him not to burn the flag in front of the church, as planned.

“So in a quiet way we took matters into our own hands and said a prayer of exorcism over this thing,” he said. “It was cut into seven pieces, so it was burned over stages in the same fire pit that we used for the Easter vigil mass.”

So Kalchik’s not just a bigot, but a coward, too.

He justified his hate by saying the rainbow flag was a “profane” way to honor Jesus, but someone whose response to a symbol of outreach is to destroy it has more than just disagreement on his mind. He even admitted that he thinks gay people should be killed.

When asked about his views toward homosexuality, Kalchik was unequivocal, saying he’s “quite literal” when it comes to what the Bible says in Leviticus, Corinthians and Ephesians. Leviticus 20:13, according to the King James Bible, states: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: They shall surely be put to death.”

This person isn’t stable enough to run a mile, let alone a church. He is transparently bigoted, and he targets the most vulnerable people in our society. It’s not burning the flag itself that’s a problem because this isn’t about free speech. This is about the message Kalchik wants to send through his act of protest, which is one of pure hate and bigotry.

Is the Catholic Church in Chicago okay with that?
