I don't understand what "power" has to do with any of this. What am I missing?
162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 28, 2012, 08:21:24 PM
Hey Erik, why the change of heart?

Politicians are regularly smeared for "flip-flopping." Personally, I respect a man who has the integrity to change his mind and  accept the consequences.

That said, It looks like Erik was simply being cautious with his words. Another respectable trait.
163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 28, 2012, 08:11:25 PM
I just hope the pro-hierarchy Bitcoiners

It's not pro-hierarchy. It's realism. We live in a hierarchical world where hierarchies matter, regardless your opinion of them.

Quote
if they start trying to set the Bitcoin price

That's utterly impossible.
164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 28, 2012, 08:05:25 PM
If bitcoin wants to succeed, it cannot be anti-government at this point.

Governments are a force to be reckoned with, and if you don't understand that, or see how it relates to bitcoin, then I have nothing else to say.

For bitcoin to succeed, it can't be some seedy currency for the underbelly of the internet or a tax haven for criminals. For serious companies to seriously consider bitcoin, bitcoin cannot be a legal liability, and it is construed as one right now. This is why the Foundation is a step forward in my opinion.
165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 28, 2012, 07:56:13 PM
bitcoin as a protocol would be useless without decentralization. But bitcoin as an experiment, as a project in development, as a revolution must have some sort of central organization. Otherwise, chaos. Like Erik said, market-based centralization. free market != chaos.
166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: September 28, 2012, 07:51:29 PM
I don't exactly understand the dissent. I'm still neutral here but it seems to me like the dev team totally deserves to ask for funding in this way. It worked for Linux, right? Look at Linux now, it's universal and amazing. And still true to the principles of open source technology.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the Foundation is trying to accomplish, and maybe I don't understand what the Linux Foundation did.

I agree with the sentiment that at this point the bitcoin experiment cannot be inherently anti-government if it is to succeed in the end. I suppose it is anti-fiat money by nature, but I think governments can and will evolve. There is no denying that bitcoin is a better alternative to an endless supply of special paper.

167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Peer 82.130.xx.xx connected to me 3 times, sending constant pings? on: September 28, 2012, 05:31:59 PM
actually, this is really annoying now, since there are 9 of them

206.12.16.155
129.74.74.20
128.6.192.156
129.130.252.140
82.130.102.160 (on about 30 or 40 different ports)
137.99.11.86
130.253.21.123
147.102.3.117
129.130.252.141

whenever one connects, i get flooded with the ping fail

http://bgp.he.net/ip/206.12.16.155     -->BCnet
http://bgp.he.net/ip/129.74.74.20       -->University of Notre Dame

Is this a coordinated effort, since they are all doing the same thing?
168  Economy / Securities / Re: TYGRR.* assets on GLBSE delisted. on: September 28, 2012, 02:29:59 PM
I have never owned TYGRR shares and I don't believe I have any bitcoins on GLBSE, but I'm going to go double check and sell any shares I might own.

I believe I am unbiased here.

I will never use GLBSE again because of this episode, and Nefario will not win my trust back on this issue. This behavior is extremely uncalled for. What's worse is that there was no warning. If Nefario blindsided everyone with this move and still feels ok about it, he will do it again when he feels like it.
169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Torrents and bitcoin schemes on: September 28, 2012, 02:19:57 PM
There is no reason why the first one had to be a pirate. He could be the owner of the content and be happy that all others help seed it and profit a bit from it.

good one

Big Trouble in Little China
Mannequin
Eraserhead

Just kidding - im a blank slate with a lot of the movies on this list.  From the suggestions here, I'm going to check them out.  Hope they're on the Netflix.

If you can find some on netflix, could you post them here? I can't really browse netflix with my TV remote.
171  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: EskimoBob is a scammer, witness reports inside on: September 26, 2012, 06:53:47 PM
This isn't a court of public opinion.

This isn't a court at all. This is a hobbyist internet forum specifically for the purpose of public opinion.

Why are you always lobbying to have people banned? You have been doing that for as long as I can remember. No one ever listens to your unproductive whining, you silly silly goose.

I'm not sure what you deem relevant, but that fact that you post here, and presumably read here, tends to point toward the fact that your comments are indeed relevant.

You're worse than MPORXE or whatever the hell that vampire lady calls herself. You are constantly bullied around on this forum and your posts are nothing but whine. Please sprout a backbone or at least let your business speak for itself. If you're trying to employ people to smear your competitors, then I'm not sure you really have much going for you either way.
172  Economy / Goods / Re: WTB newports on: September 26, 2012, 06:33:38 PM
underground tobacco trafficking has become a really big deal in the states. There's a great documentary about it.
173  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: EskimoBob is a scammer, witness reports inside on: September 26, 2012, 05:53:15 PM
Nobody cares about scammer tags. Give this bob a scammer tag if it makes you feel better. There is nothing going on in this forum right now besides "scammer tag scammer tag theymos maged im angry" and it's getting really, really freaking old.

Boyle's Trainspotting is really great. The ending is excellent. Rewatched 2001 again tonight with a friend who'd never seen it before. He was blown away.
176  Economy / Securities / Re: FeedZeBirds IPO May 24 - Update: Shares all sold on: September 26, 2012, 07:57:14 AM
I still think FZB is a brilliant idea, it just needs a little TLC again. If the owners stay on top of it and establish it's presence even if it doesn't make much money right now, I think it has the potential to be very big as more and more people discover bitcoin.

I would recommend appointing someone who can dedicate more time to the project, and awarding him a nice chunk of  royalty in exchange for managerial duties for as long as said duties are fulfilled in a satisfactory manner.
177  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why did you get into bitcoin? on: September 26, 2012, 07:52:53 AM
Because I like being in charge of my own money. I love open source, and I love distributed/decentralized projects. I love freedom. When I was finally convinced that bitcoin was not some elaborate scam, I fell in love with the concept.

I really don't know how I feel about a fixed supply currency still, but I've been warming to the idea ever since discovering bitcoin.

Bitcoin is a big part of what initially inspired me to study computer science.
178  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Requests Input on: September 26, 2012, 07:46:47 AM
I vote for yochdog, death and taxes, graet, joelkatz, pyramining, or etotheipi. I would also trust reeses to do this but whatever.

Inaba, very cool thread and sorry it turned into a flame thread anyway. If any of these got to inspect the progress and had good things to say, I would seriously consider getting into mining and placing an order with BFL.
179  Economy / Speculation / Re: Pattern recognition and alternating correctioins pics coming on: September 26, 2012, 07:36:45 AM
How does any technical analysis account for, say, the single entity with 500,000 plus bitcoins? How does it predict the whims of one guy conrolling 5% of bitcoins in existence when it can, at best, only marginally produce results on a very broad distribution of value, which is not bitcoin at all?

Cool stuff that you're doing to those charts I guess, it's stuff I don't know how to do.

But I'm finally putting the spec board on ignore. I just don't see the value in it.
