1723  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Russian Central Bank Admits It Can’t Ban Bitcoin on: March 19, 2020, 08:33:13 PM
The Director of the Bank of Russia’s legal department has admitted that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies cannot realistically ever be banned in the country.

Although cryptocurrencies are not exactly legal in Russia, it seems like they won’t ever be banned, either. That’s the latest news from the Russian government. Although Russia has a love hate relationship with crypto and bitcoin, what do you think about this admission? I think personally no bank can control it, but they don't admit it.

What do you think about this?

Hmm surprising pragmatism. Surely a technician, engineer or studied in some field, not your average (clueless) politician...

Well having no position is better than going against it. "Legalization" can be a double edged sword, once the "ignorant" politicians want to tax or restrict it before finding out that with bitcoin its realistically impossible to do (accurately anyway).
1724  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are you ready for the Halving ??? Not that Halving, the PRICE Halving of Bitcoin on: March 19, 2020, 08:25:32 PM
Last week, the price of bitcoin has almost stabilized at the level of 5100-5200 dollars. It started that people have already made their necessary purchases and are ready for quarantine caused by the spread of coronavirus. Today, we are seeing a good increase in the price of bitcoin by 14 percent - up to $ 5929. The price of ethereum also increased - up to $ 129 and the entire cryptocurrency market. Apparently, this is due to good news from the USA and Italy about testing a vaccine against this virus and the absence of new coronavirus cases in China today. As soon as coronavirus spreads, the cryptocurrency market will continue to grow and Bitcoin will again quickly overcome the price of $ 10,000 and go up further.

Say i didn't say so.... Oh wait, i did:

The real question is, Are you ready for the doubling? Because once the economy recovers and the virus becomes a thing of the past, this market is full of cheap things to buy. In fact, China has already announced their crisis to be ending, so they are returning to work and production. And what do they find? Everything has gone dirt cheap in the world (except masks, maybe).

I think the time is nearing for you to buy cheap before the Chinese start doing it...

I think this bear sentiment will quickly move into bull soon. Don't say i didn't warn you.

China is awakening from its slumber, and the market is very cheap, for them to buy because "communist" China has one of the largest population of "billionaires" in the world (ie. Lots of Jihan Wu(s), Changpeng Zhao(s) and the like. I seem to remember reading there is like a million of them, making China the largest market of rich people in the world (yes, the wealth is very uneven there, having the largest population).

And they with all that money lying around finding some opportunity to make more... See the world stock market "in recession". And cheap bitcoin, and even cheap precious metals...

I wouldn't be surprised if it does reach 10k, but even 7.5k+ is fine. If it goes past 15k it should "correct" later. We will see how bitcoin performs on its own.
1725  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin trading increasing in Venezuela on: March 19, 2020, 08:13:38 PM
If it is happening due to Coronavirus, then the same should have been happening in other countries as well. Like France, Italy and Spain etc. But is that happening?

The main reason of this increse is possibly explained as below,

1. Venezuelan dollar is facing hyper inflation that its purchasing power has decreased to the lowest level possible.
2. Due to the recent lockdown, their left over production industries halted production activities which further weakens the economy and its currency.
3. Venezuelan citizens are possibly looking for a highly liquid asset to safe guard their money

It is a joint impact of Coronavirus and weakened economy of Venezuela.

It is hard to fall more when you are already at the bottom...
Venezuela's economy is one of the worst in several aspects.

Halted production? What production? Most production stopped in the past years of price fixation policies, and nationalization of industries left to rust abandoned. The goods that returned in today's Venezuela, are imported and overpriced (before the virus), yes including Toilet Paper

Venezuela's fiat coin is formerly called bolivar, like the historical figure (notice small cap to distinguish from the actual family name). This coin has been "remade" (to slash zeroes) 2 times, once in 2008 to slash three zeroes, and another in 2018 to slash 5 zeroes, so the current "bolivar" has a suffix to denote its current (3rd) version: Soberano (VES), previous version was Fuerte (VEF) and the original without suffix (VEB).

Current wages in Venezuela are too little (about $5 for a monthly wage, $10 if you land a "very good" job) to save anyway, and if you kept bolivars you would not be able to buy tomorrow what you can buy today. So those that survive, are either earning in foreign currency (or crypto) or get foreign currency (or crypto) sent from abroad by family or acquaintances.

This is why i mentioned "whales" in my previous post.

In my opinion, it really isn't happening, not by people living normally here anyway, at least not common people, but a few rich whales.
1726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC + Corona on: March 19, 2020, 08:03:23 PM
In any case, crypto is now feeling much better than some stocks

I did said so, China is awakening from its lumber. Now bitcoin is starting to move away from the global economy trend...
Those who bought the cheapest bitcoins at around 5k now just need to wait and ride that wave back up.

And someone had the nerve of badmouth Snowden when he gave the correct advise to buy those cheap bitcoins...
1727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin trading increasing in Venezuela on: March 19, 2020, 07:48:04 PM
Due to the Coronavirus, lots of countries are lockdown. Venezuela is also on nationwide quarantine. As a result, banks are shutting down, on the other hand, Bitcoin trading activity is increasing in Venezuela.

Its true that we are quarantined but i doubt "trading is increasing" as we rarely use banks for anything anymore anyway....

On the other hand, since you shouldn't go out you can't use much money in the first place.

But traders are making money and most volume belongs to those whales, many which don't even live in the country anymore.

Banks in Venezuela have been reduced to mostly electronic payment processors. You can't do the things you often associate with banks anymore, not for the past few years. No credit (rates are fixed, under hyperinflation which is nonsense, oh and they were forced to go full reserve, which is great if the rest of the Austrian measures (especially economic freedom) were put in place.

In any case before corona, banks in Venezuela were largely useless. Cash? Let me tell you, they can give you a single banknote per day. Currently there are only 3 types: 10k, 20k, and 50k. You don't get to pick which one, it depends if you are lucky you might get the 50k.

So how much is 50k? Before the world economic collapse, you needed 75k to purchase 1 USD. Currently, you need about 70k (go figure, a world economic collapse made a hyperinflation fiat turn around). But that's about it. People avoid cash if at all possible. Most payments are done by debit card (if you got an old one that hasn't broken, since new cards have been unavailable for years) or via SMS or app payment, or wiretransfer (which can take 1~2 days between different banks).

See? bitcoin transfers faster. A mere 1 day wait is luxury Smiley

Since the "legalization" (to own and use foreign currencies) in 2019, most cash you see around lately are USD banknotes, the smallest ones Americans often ignore (ie: 1, 2, 5). It is said many of the small banknotes from Florida are sent here so there is often scarcity of them back in FL...

Currently there are 42 cases confirmed, more expected to come. Both Cuba and China have sent people and supplies and medicines. Borders are closed, commercial travel (air, land, sea) is closed. There are blockades in many places to stop people from moving, and those that go out to buy food or medicine, have to use a mask (yeah i know it should be for the sick only, go tell them). People are not allowed to use gas stations either, only health/gov vehicles.
1728  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Corona virus a hoax for profit? on: March 19, 2020, 07:03:18 PM
The deaths by Corona are actually less than the ones caused by regular flu in the previous years.
So Elon Musk is right. You can just check the flu death stats for the past years and compare them with this year.

But what's the reason for the hoax?
I think it is to harm the local businesses by forcing them to close, so that the big e-commerce sites can profit because the local shops are their competition.

To confirm this theory, just wait for the 1st quarter 2020 revenue reports by Alibaba, Amazon, eBay etc. and compare them with the 1st quarter 2019.
If you see a big increase in the 2020 , you have the evidence

How about you wait for the 1st quarter of 2021 and count the number of deaths by COVID-19 and then compare it to the yearly flu deaths?

Hint: Its only the 3rd month of this year, and there are already 9844 deaths. Italy has surpassed China, so Europe has a very grim outlook. Also, its getting out of hand in the USA (because of people implying "its a hoax", then go partying to get infected etc...).

I saw a video from Spain, and the same Italian drama is repeating over there. Their healthcare system cannot cope with the number of patients, and like Italy they have to prioritize and leave many without any treatment.

Some people here have been mocking the forum's healthcare worker, you have no idea what you have done... The videos are out there, they might have just not been translated into English yet. but that might not be needed as it appears the USA is going down the same path.
1729  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Have my S9 miners been hacked? on: March 19, 2020, 06:36:30 PM
[...]

As far as the chips are concerned, the pool being PPS+ or PPLNS has NO DIFFERENCE.

You may be referring to the downtime when switching, as typically done by Nicehash. This should not be an issue with the #xnsub option enabled.

To OP: The reasoning behind it is that the Antminers get hotter when they disconnect from a pool. But needing to use PPS+ is false. ViaBTC in both modes use the miners identically (and PPS+ is the default anyway). You can do the same test on any pool, such as ckpool and its perfectly valid, if not better simply because the pool operator might help you diagnose things. Kanopool is out of the question, because the operator will ban you.

Yes there is another advantage to testing in ckpool: You don't need an user account to use it, you can just use your bitcoin address.
1730  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Coronavirus lleva a bolsa de Nueva York a operar online on: March 19, 2020, 06:02:35 PM

1731  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Snowden ve oportunidad para comprar Bitcoin. on: March 19, 2020, 05:54:23 PM

1733  Economy / Economics / Re: The Economy around the world will be very bad in April to May 2020!!! on: March 18, 2020, 09:23:26 PM
Both China and Cuba have claimed to have a vaccine and medicine. An Australian team also reported success identifying key elements for immunity.

My main concern would be crowds getting close together, someone coughing in a mosque would spread the virus very quickly.

The fasting has nothing to do with it, since this is a daylight fasting done every year for about a month, they still eat at night.

And Ramadan does not affect the world economy in anyway, the thread title makes no sense.

In my opinion by the time Ramadan comes, the situation will have been controlled worldwide.
1734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 60% Wiped Out - Will Bitcoin Have a Hard Time Finding Investors After This? on: March 18, 2020, 07:33:19 PM
Bitcoin doesn't need investors. A good currency has very little investment. Bitcoin will have succeeded when nobody wants to invest in it anymore.

All i see now is cheap bitcoin waiting to be bought, especially now that the Chinese giant is waking from its slumber...

You say this is a test, the test has not finished. When it gets obvious that it recovers, you won't get a chance to get in, it will be too late.

The global economy might or might not recover as quick as bitcoin, but it doesn't matter, they are not really linked. I'm guessing many people were selling to buy other things, that won't need anymore once the virus is gone.

If you want an answer to the question, then the answer is no. Plenty of people worldwide consider bitcoin too useful to let it pass. And China, the first country that went to sleep, is now the first to wake up...
1735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Theft on: March 18, 2020, 07:21:35 PM
I think it is some how funny how some people fall for some of these scammers. if I have an issue with an exchange they do have customer support, why not contact them, when someone from an exchange contact you asking for your coin, then you should run from that exchange, because something doesn't add up

Its social engineering. They are not asking for your coin, they fish people in social media to impersonate "official support", then they proceed to ask things like Account name (login), and try for example a lost password recovery (rather than asking you for the password), so if you have one of those dreaded "security questions" the impersonator will tell you something to the lines of "to verify your account, you have to answer our security question" (which happens to be the one the system is asking them real time).

They can also keep inventing excuses like that to reach all your important things like email, etc. Or use malware exploits or a combination.

I find more colorful what they did with the stolen money: Buy a luxury car, and gamble the money in Las Vegas... I would say very very stupid of them, its the only reason they got caught in the first place. They failed some money laundering checks (where did the money came from).

Of course, you should also not fall to social engineering tricks.
1736  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin blockchain trilemma, who will solve it on: March 18, 2020, 06:23:13 PM
We know that Lightning network is already there but it hasn't been able to take off yet, not many are using it. Why still bitcoin old network is preferred over LN? Its because we still dont trust this new concept.

Since LN is not really Bitcoin, Bitcoin cannot do much about it. It needs WALLET support, for it to be used. If core puts it in the official wallet, that probably helps, but i think its the light wallets like Electrum that will change the game. When the (true) v4 Electrum release comes out, which is aiming precisely for LN support (please people, stop falling to the obvious v4 Electrum fakes out there, stick the official page and sign check any binaries you download from official sources)

I don't particularly care for LN much, but like it or not, that will offload the transaction traffic at least somewhat, enough for Bitcoin to remain useful without any radical changes.

There is no "trillema" at all, because there is no scalability issue either. If you think Bitcoin is unsuitable to buy coffee, don't use it for coffee.
1737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did this guy just find the founder of Bitcoin? on: March 18, 2020, 06:14:16 PM
Hey, guys just wanted to know if this is legit. Its an admin approved Wikipedia post too. Check out the video this guy has posted below.  Roll Eyes

You cannot find the founder of Bitcoin. Only the founder can find YOU. And that founder also made this forum...

The founder can sign messages for proof, therefore only the founder can find you(we) and not the other way around.

All the others, belong to the long line of impostors that claim it but fail to prove it.
1738  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Does Bitcoin Have Value? on: March 18, 2020, 06:10:21 PM
It is a simple yet not easy question to answer: why does bitcoin have value?

Bitcoin has value because it has both scarcity and utility. It is a limited and useful resource. It is important to note that something must be BOTH in order to command a market value, NOT either.

Bitcoin is limited to the software-imposed hard limit of 21,000,000 bitcoin units ever in circulation. It is useful because it allows payment information to be secured by a decentralized computing network backed by magnitudes of raw hashing power. That raw hashing power is energy (electricity) converted into digital utility. Each transaction must compete (fee market) to be included in the next block of transactions which has a limited [block space] due to the block size limit (2MB) imposed on each ~10 minute block.

We can expect both the value to increase and the number of users to increase exponentially so long as the current technology maintains itself and remains both useful and in a limited abundance.

Bitcoin will always retain market value so long as miner nodes are actively contributing their hashing power to secure the network (proof of work).

No, bitcoin value retains its usability and scarcity as you correctly point, even in the inevitable diminishing of hashrate once mining stops becoming profitable, which is a point we are approaching with every passing day.

This doesn't make the network weak, because there are less miners because it has become too expensive for the benefit, so its still to expensive to attack, even with less miners. There will ALWAYS be miners, just not so many since the for profit ones will be gone. This moment is not too far away, sure the current price is temporary, but letter even with higher bitcoin price, the mining activity won't be able to pay for itself anymore. So the last miners will be those hobbysts, enthusiasts or people that somehow have "free" electricity (ie. renewable sources).

If you were expecting significant profits from transaction fees, LN came to get rid of that. Everyone can just stick to 1 sat/B txs and maybe use LN for anything else. The only reason you sometimes see fees spikes, its because people still blind trust their wallets to pick the "best" transaction fee. This is NOT Bitcoin doing it, its your stupid wallet. So don't let it, set it up manually and don't bother for insta-payments unless you want to do LN or an emergency makes you use a higher fee.
