181  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BitBar the Hero of Bitcoin and Hammer to The creation of new AlT-coins on: May 05, 2013, 05:18:34 AM
I see BitBar has already hit the coveted "big enough to have a dedicated circlejerk" phase of Altcoin popularity.
182  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Offering to act as ESCROW between BTC, LTC, FTC and CNC on: May 04, 2013, 06:25:54 PM
I'm trying to compile a list of Altcoin escrow agents at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AibiuqEWnCPZdEN2NlBsUm9PQUoyelk2REVhd0hzSUE#gid=0

Want me to add your name to the list?

Nah., i don't think there is a big need at the moment.
But thanks.

Personally, I disagree...I see tons of trade and WTS threads here daily, more scam accusations then we've seen here historically, yet little in the way of new escrow offerings. That's my own 2 Satoshis though.

Feel free to give me a holler if you change your mind.
183  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoin Escrow Master-List on: May 04, 2013, 06:15:01 PM
Bump for visibility, since I see a lot of sale/trade threads on the frontpage.

And what is BitBar? I can't even be bothered to search. Tired..

The latest Flavor-of-the-monthCoin. Or "FotmCoin".
186  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoin Escrow Master-List on: May 04, 2013, 05:48:25 AM
Hi, I would like to escrow.

You can maybe add an online thing.  And maybe the ability to set fees.  People go to the page, sees who's online.  Checks fees.  Look at their past rep.  And hopefully it'll lower the scam rate.  The scam rate is really high.  There are people scamming over 1.25 FTC.

I have 0 btc otc.  That doesn't mean I'm not trustworthy though.

That's a good idea. As this matures, I'll gradually add more features and add more data to the excel sheet. Hopefully it does turn into a proper site one of these days...but I'm going to be pretty busy for the next 2 weeks or so, and have a couple other projects on my plate already  Sad

You're added to the list. Can I get a list of the coins you're willing to provide escrow for?

Updated both your user pages.

Will be out for a little while here. Doing a nice dinner with the lady. However, I'll be back later to make this spreadsheet look much nicer.

Barnacle, thank you for the effort! I think this will serve as a great aid to help people avoid being scammed.

I try sometimes  Smiley

Figured since I don't have the time/energy/cred to support escrow firsthand, I might as well try helping others start it up better.

188  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I've had it with the scammers on here and am starting an escrow service on: May 04, 2013, 02:00:53 AM

Alright. Here's what I'll do then: I'll throw together a Google Doc with NAME in one column, REPUTATION in one, and CURRENCIES SUPPORTED in another. Then throw your name first on the list.

This way we have one master-list of escrow'ers that can easily be updated and referred to.

Please post a link to the doc in this thread when you are done.

Check. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AibiuqEWnCPZdEN2NlBsUm9PQUoyelk2REVhd0hzSUE#gid=0

It's view-only for everyone but me currently. What altcoins would you like to support with escrow?
189  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Idea/Warning: Escrow for Altcoins on: May 04, 2013, 01:44:17 AM
I usually have clients for most chains, but I would tend to want reasonable pay for my time, which would probably make the price too high for trivially tiny trades.

Hopefully soon either it will become trivial to slap up a Ripple gateway or it will be simpler to make Open Transactions smart-contracts that actually access blockchains. Either way, automation seems the economical way to go exceptmaybe for "reasonable sized" transactions. (Ones where paying a lawyer or doctor or accountant or sysadmin or systems-analyst type for an hour to handle a clerical task is a trivial expense compared to the size of the transaction, presumably.)

-MarkM-

Automated escrow would be a dream come true. In lieu of that, would you like me to add your name to the list?

Um... Can you add me? lol

Added. Which altcoins do you plan to provide escrow support for?
190  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I've had it with the scammers on here and am starting an escrow service on: May 04, 2013, 12:22:07 AM
Hivemind. Though our approaches are somewhat different.

I see you have similar thoughts. After getting scammed myself I came to the realization that such a service would be of much value, especially for small trades between two people who have never met and do not trust each other. I am willing to be that trusted third party, but first I have to build up trust which is why I decided to start small - really small. Small enough, in fact, that there won't even be concern for being scammed, but the transactions will definitely show my reliability and hopefully my attitude through the process will show my professionalism.

So there's some disturbing trends I've noticed here.

1) Tons of new altchains. Which, on the whole, is fine (despite my own personal objections to some of them)

2) Tons of new scam accusations as these altchains are released. Which, on the whole, is to be expected with new uncharted territory.

3) As far as I'm aware, there has been little or no increase in the number of people offering escrow services. For most (if not all) of these new altchains.

What I'd personally like to see if we, as a community, are going to rush headlong into TotallyNotAScamCoin that we should at least have a dedicated list of trusted escrow contacts before any trades are made. Like trusted Bitcoin escrow'ers who don't mind grabbing the client for a few of the new coins (since I assume they will all be traded for BTC, given current trends) and offer up their services in some kind of global altcoin escrow list.

I'd offer up my own name for such a service since I threw this idea out here, but have 0 escrow experience and no reputation as a result. So, instead, I'm throwing together a list of people willing to provide these services. If you'd like your name added to the list, post here or throw me a PM. Be sure to include:

  • The currencies you're willing to provide escrow for
  • Your Bitcoin-OTC account link (if you have one)
  • How you would prefer to be contacted. Such as an email address, skype, gchat, etc.
  • The fees you will be charging for escrow. Or lack thereof.
  • Any other additional information you'd like other users to know. Such as preferred chat times, explanations for high/low rep scores, etc.

List at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AibiuqEWnCPZdEN2NlBsUm9PQUoyelk2REVhd0hzSUE&usp=sharing (view-only for everyone but me, currently).

If you want your rep updated, toss me a link to the post where you were rep++'ed. If you have a complaint and want to rep-- an escrow'er, let me know. Hope this helps someone...

And this is why there is a stickied "USE ESCROW!" thread at the top of the Marketplace subforum. Rule #0 of cryptocoins is don't trust anyone...
195  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Secondard Altcoin Investment Advice on: May 03, 2013, 10:54:31 PM
Devcoin. (Disclaimer: I do own some Devcoins and write for devtome)

1) Merge-mined with BTC. So you lose none of your hashing power and only stand to gain from doing this. Plus it has the backing of the BTC network, so it's that much more stable.

2) Ethical. Most of it goes to creators (developers, writers, musicians, etc), so unlike a lot of the coins on this subforum that turn into frantic pump-and-dumps with no real substance, there are real incentives for contributing to the project.

3) Already established and traded on some exchanges, unlike some of the newer currencies.

Only downside is it will probably be less lucrative than some of the other altchains. But you know this one will be safe and it'll be a good cause.
196  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is there still need for more coins, or better, opporutnities for innovation? on: May 03, 2013, 09:10:27 PM
Devilcoin:  Cap of 666million coins, confirms in 666 milliseconds, and the coin logo would have a little picture of a devil on it.

Will your address be the mark of the beast?

No.  All addresses will actually be just the name of a metal band.

Call it "MaidenCoin" and refer to mining as "Upping the Irons". Then you'll have my support  Tongue
197  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How many Bitcoins in a BitBar? on: May 03, 2013, 07:17:18 PM
.000000000000001 BTC to 1 BTB

It's an altchain released about 24 hours ago with 0 dedicated services and no real purpose other than pump-and-dump. The only think keeping it's price up right now is mindless hype and insane speculation. Assuming this thread is a discussion of the "true" value of one BitBar, I say it is effectively worthless given current conditions since you can't actually use it for anything other than speculation yet.

You seem to spend a lot of time in the alt coin section bashing alt coins. Not trying to be rude but why are you here?

Equality basically hits the nail on the head:

most of them are scams and get rich quick schemes. they're not actually trying to do anything good. you have to create a coin for altruistic reasons and be very good at it to be on bitcoins level. which basically means you have to make improvements on bitcoin. improvements designed to make the world a better place. then you have to release it in an honest way with no premining. the reason most people create alt coins is because of greed and to make the creators rich.

It's hard to buy into this whole "changing the world and making it a better place" dialogue when 90% of the altchains that come out are thinly-veiled attempts to make a quick buck a few individuals at others' expense. It really saddens me to see this subforum in such a state where everyone's so excited about *yet another* currency with dubious improvements over Bitcoin bubble'ing to such a high price in such little time without any real support for it.

I like altchains. I really like what Litecoin, Devcoin, and Namecoin have brought to the table. Bytecoin and other branches which have literally added nothing new, on the other hand, I have extremely little respect for. Hence my "bashing" them.

Price is even higher now based on recent auction threads.

Between FTC and now this "BitBar" craze, the hype (and stupidity) on this subforum is approaching critical mass.

If you still need a hand, I'll gladly take a look at it.
