BitMinter client v1.3.2beta is ready for testing.

Quick update that I think some AMD miners will like.

New since 1.3.1:
  • Fixed to work on recent AMD Catalyst driver versions like 13.3 beta
  • Detect CPU name on Mac OS X instead of calling it "unknown cpu"
  • Recognize more GPUs

Please check it out:

I want to push this out quickly. Please help test and let me know if it runs ok on both new and old catalyst versions.
1842  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [2000 GH/s] BitMinter.com [ASIC support: var diff, Stratum, GBT, rollntime] on: March 22, 2013, 08:34:14 AM
Trying to sign a new worker on.  A mac. What am I doing wrong.  I have a lot of pc's on line I have java loaded.  I click the button and no software comes up.

Could you see if it helps to clear the java cache? http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml

Does it show a window saying that it's downloading/verifying? Or is there nothing at all?

Why am I mining nothing but miscalculations? I got 90 in 10 minutes. I haven't mined for a long time, but my drivers are up to date. I have the 13.3 beta 2's I have two 6950s @ 800Mhz

Lots of people had problems with the recent Catalyst versions. Maybe try reinstalling Catalyst?
1843  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [2000 GH/s] BitMinter.com [ASIC support: var diff, Stratum, GBT, rollntime] on: March 21, 2013, 04:11:55 PM
Instability with the web server today. Apologies for that.

That also means port 80 mining has been unstable.
1844  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BitMinter client (Win/Linux/Mac, NEW: BFL and Icarus FPGAs supported) on: March 21, 2013, 06:20:09 AM
I keep getting BFI failed three times during "run" press in bitminter, any idea? have 3x5870 (stock settings) and installed catalyst 13.3 beta (worked the best for me)
Also even though it says a Mhash rate of 1100 there isnt registered anything in my stats/bitminter worker info...

Probably something is wrong with your OpenCL drivers. I guess you are seeing all bombs/miscalculations. Maybe the client can still work if you switch off BFI_INT but there will be a performance hit. You can click the little green arrows to expand the view of the device then click the wrench to get to the (BFI_INT) settings.

Best is of course to fix the drivers. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers might do it. Since AMD uninstall has never actually worked you may need to manually clean out the drivers. These instructions have been reported to work for that: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=359883

If I get my Avalon miner, what CGminer parameters will I need to use when to start mining in this pool?

Connect it to stratum+tcp://mint.bitminter.com:3333 (Stratum) or http://mint.bitminter.com:8332 (GBT or getwork). As user name put your BitMinter user name, an underscore, then a worker name, e.g. DrHaribo_FastWorker. In case you have firewall issues, port 5050 (Stratum) and 80 (GBT/getwork) are also available.
1846  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: What are the Pro's/Con's of starting a pool? on: March 17, 2013, 03:13:46 PM
But what are the benefits of owning pool? Do you get a cut from the miners or what.

Thanks for the responses btw.
The benefits? Realistically: many sleepless nights, headaches, heartaches, trolling, frustration, loss of money and the very slim chance of making a profit...

Ah i understand now. I was thinking it might be the Pool hopping security thing. i did read something about 10 shifts so i knew i was on the right track just didn't completely understand it.

We don't have a weird anti pool hopping feature that punishes you randomly like some pools. Every proof of work is treated the same. It doesn't matter if your hash rate bounces up and down or if you stop mining for a while. All work is treated fairly and equally.

The PPLNS reward system was analyzed and recommended by Meni Rosenfeld. You can read more about it in his paper here: https://bitcoil.co.il/pool_analysis.pdf

I came up with the shifts as a way to reduce server load and make it easier for users to see what's going on and verify that everything is correct.
1848  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Weekly pool and network statistics on: March 17, 2013, 11:01:09 AM
Well now, that's handy. But if you're worried about decentralisation, the number of miners isn't as important as the number of miners plus as the hashrate distribution of the miners. That's what is hard to get synchronously, and since some pools average the hashrates for 15 minutes and others for 24 hours, it's very hard to compare the pools. That's why it's taking a while.

I have data on how much work each user did in each shift and each block round. I know the duration also so I can use that to calculate each user's average hashrate during a shift or round. It gets a little crazy for 1-second rounds though.

I'm not sure how to massage this into some useful metrics to make available through the API.

Perhaps if you let us know what you need, pools can deliver.
1849  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Weekly pool and network statistics on: March 17, 2013, 10:32:40 AM
Number of active users mining at BitMinter is available at http://bitminter.com/api/pool/users

We went from 900 to 1500 active users over the last two months.
1850  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Weekly pool and network statistics on: March 17, 2013, 09:16:49 AM

Word of the day? I had to look up that one. Cheesy
1851  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Weekly pool and network statistics on: March 17, 2013, 08:56:57 AM
Since mining on p2Pool can net you more coin than mining on other centralised pools, this post is important reading for any geeky miner.

I think you meant to say that since true zero-fee pools like BitMinter, MtRed and P2pool will pay better in the long term, you may want to look into that. And on BitMinter you don't need to be geeky, just click a button.
1852  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BitMinter.com * Optional Custom Miner, PPLNS, Merged mining, Newbie-Friendly! * on: March 17, 2013, 07:31:55 AM
My question is, when those alleged asic stuff comes to play (if they ever do), will it be pointless for us "hobby" miners to even participate in mining?
Im not expection to break even with my investment 0.16usd pr kW electrisity... (its all just for fun really)

I hope hobby miners will still be mining. It's important that the hash rate is spread out on as many hands as possible. Luckily butterflylabs has ASIC products as cheap as $150.

The strange thing is that 13.1 was working before, although I was getting some strange artifacts (which is why I upgraded to 13.2 in the first place). Here is the hs_err_pid file: http://pastebin.com/tyrmpren

Yeah, that looks like the AMD driver crash people have been having with the latest Catalyst mess. Now if I go to amd.com I find 13.1 and 13.3 beta. Wonder what happened with 13.2. Tongue

I would honestly be OK with simply downgrading to an older version of Catalyst. The only reason I upgraded to 13.1 in the first place was to see if that made a difference to the stability of my PC (it didn't). I think those stability issues were caused by some problem with my windows installation because if I boot from my secondary HDD, that issue seems to go away (although I have not tested it enough to be 100% certain). Unfortunately, though, AMD will not let you download older drivers from their site. If anyone knows of somewhere that I can get a nice, clean virus-free copy of 12.x, that would be awesome. Thanks!

AMD uninstall doesn't work properly and never has. You may need to clean up some things manually. This may help: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=359883

AMD does have older Catalyst versions available for download. If you google "previous catalyst drivers" you should find them. For instance, for 64-bit Windows: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

Hey guys i think i know whats happening but not totally sure so i wanted to ask . Today i had to shut down one of my Rigs. The slower one with 2 6970's so i could redo the water cooling loop. (New Tubing etc) Anyway before i shut that one PC down i was getting .13% share. Now with everything back up and running and a couple blocks passed for some reason it says i am at .6% share.

I am only guessing but it says something about 10 shifts. Does this mean i get a penalty every time i reboot or shut a PC down for 10 shifts or blocks?

I am just a little curious what that actually means? It does show both workers on the site at the right speed.

I usually maintain or shut at least 1 build down a day thats why i am asking. Is this killing me?

If you work less then you get paid less. That's not a penalty. When we create a block you get paid for the amount of work you have in the last 10 completed shifts. That will start to drop as shifts are completed without you, after you have shut down. After you start up again it will rise as new shifts are completed with your work in them.

Simple way to see it: every proof of work you deliver is recorded in a shift. After that shift is completed this proof of work will be paid for any block found until 10 more shifts are completed, pushing the proof of work out of the 10 latest ones.

If your computers work 23 hours out of every 24 hours, then they get paid 95.8% of their potential because they have 4.2% downtime.

So I tried uninstalling the 13.2 drivers, running driver sweeper, then installing the 13.1 drivers. Unfortunately, now the bitminter client will not open at all. I saw that you said this was caused by the virtual machine crashing and could be solved by uninstalling drivers, running driver sweeper, and reinstalling, so I tried that again, but I am still having the same problem. any ideas? I can post the hs_err_pid log file if you like. thanks again for the help.

ckolivas posted in the client thread that Catalyst 13.1 is unstable. I haven't tested 13.1 or 13.2 yet, personally.

If you post the hs_err_pid on pastebin or similar, I'll have a look. Or email it to me, operator@bitminter.com

i checked my transactions it seems good.
it is funny i had the mystery unconfirmed today and  now it seems to check out , a few days ago i had a reading that i had an external block and then that changed and fixed itself .  todays problem was block 225830.  the other day it was 225544 to the doctor thanks for a quick reply.

That can happen if you load the blocks page at exactly the right time. Sometimes the payment processor will see the new block on the block chain before the mining server has registered who made it, and it shows as having been made by an external entity. Other times the creator is registered by the mining server, but the payment processor hasn't checked the block chain yet to see if the block is on the chain or stale (orphaned on creation), so it shows as stale by default.

I suppose better defaults would be "unknown" creator and "new" in the confirmations column. That's less confusing, I think?

i have a question i have an unconfirmed amount .  it poped up today.  i see a block  was orphaned but i pay the 2% in fact I give 2.5% for btc and 4% for nmc so why is this  one amount unconfirmed.    TIA

Is the prepay perk turned on? Maybe you turned it off earlier, then raised donations back up but forgot to turn it on again?

Cool. Looks ready for prime time. Smiley

I rather enjoy Mining not for the money aspects only but the whole idea and concept. Being a Miner gives you that feeling of actually being part of bitcoin because if we dont mine there is no security or Bitcoins right?

Definitely. High global hashpower is important for Bitcoin. But I would also argue that having the hashpower spread out is important, rather than have it controlled by a few people. I hope there will be several companies selling ASICs, and I hope they will be on the hands of lots of people.

Would like to note, we uninstalled AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead, it is working well now!

A lot of people had problems running the miner with AVG. Good that you got things working again Smiley

I've upgraded to the Catalyst 13.2 beta and now works fine...

Many had problems with Catalyst 13.2 beta and had to go back to 13.1. Maybe there is a new beta that works, though, I don't know.

I just tested the auto cash out settings with Firefox and it worked fine. Could you try logging out and back in, see if that makes any difference?

Random suggestions: it would be nice if it could start up with the OS. Also, if on right-clicking the taskbar icon you could select pause/start.

Yeah, something like that is on the TODO list (both).

Until then you could try adding this to a startup script: "javaws http://bitminter.com/client/bitminter.jnlp"

I just installed BitMinter and am running it on my desktop's GPU. A couple of problems/questions:
1) In my account on the website I can't adjust the "Auto cash out" settings, adding addresses and thresholds. It just doesn't take. I tried it in Firefox and Chrome.

You click the ok button after making the changes, and what happens?

2) Every time I start the client it seems to want to download something and requires me to check a box allowing it to run. Is this normal?

It's checking if there is a new version. Allowing it to run is a security thing. Depending on the operating system and java version there is usually a checkbox to always trust this program/publisher, so you don't have to click ok every time you start it.

Also, is 179 Mhps a reasonable rate for my ATI Radeon HD 5700? That's in the client, on the website it varies.

That depends on which 5700-series model you have.
