Sadly my wallet had a password

You could continue trying to use pywallet. However it's very old software and difficult to use (as you found out).

What operating system did you install pywallet onto?

I had it working on windows, but I can't remember all the steps I made to install it. This is a screenshot showing the windows command that got it working for me. That command scans a whole drive rather than just one file.

1942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet.dat corrupt on: July 10, 2017, 07:31:45 PM
Did your wallet.dat have a password? If it didn't try opening the wallet.dat in a hex editor and searching for this string of bytes 0201010420. The next the thirty-two bytes after that string might be a private key.

This is a hex editor I use but any other should work.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/wxhexeditor/

In the hex editor's menu click file, then open, then navigate to the folder containing your wallet.dat6 and open it.

Afterwards click "edit", then "find".

This window should open. Paste the hex string into the the text box labelled "search", then click the button labelled "find all" and wait for it to search the wallet.dat file.

Make sure you run all software offline inside a virtualbox or vmware virtual machine. Don't risk viewing private keys on any computer that connects to the internet.

If you get any results from your search the following 32 bytes could be a private key.

Copy them into notepad and remove any spaces. This is an example of a private key copied from a hex editor into notepad with the spaces removed.

That can then be copied into an offline copy of this website, which will convert it into a format that Bitcoin wallets like electrum can import.

https://www.bitaddress.org/

This is the private key copied from notepad into an offline copy of the bitaddress website. Clicking the view details button converts the private key into normal formats.

Did you try right clicking the shortcut and selecting "run as administrator"? It seems Bitcoin core can't rename the wallet.dat. Maybe it's a permissions error.

1944  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Got scammed, any way to get it back? on: July 10, 2017, 06:22:16 PM
I'm new so sorry if I posted this in the wrong thread.

Long story short I accidentally used a scam bitcoin blender (bitcoin-blender.com or http://bitblenduun5mnwp.onion/) and got scammed for 0.1 BTC. Is there any way for me to get them back or am I just fucked? It may not seem like a lot but I spent all my money on it so it is a huge blow.

https://i.imgur.com/6S6jJaU.png

Thanks

I remember seeing their ANN thread somewhere here in bitcointalk. As the search function is limited, cannot find out. Try looking for their ANN thread and contact them. If this does not work, open a scam accusation thread, maybe you will not get back your btc but the others will be alerted.

No, the announcement thread you remember was probably from a legit service. The one the OP used sounds like a phishing clone of it. Another user got scammed, and the clone site even has a link to the legit site's announcement thread, but it's nothing to do with it.

Just looked carefully and i think this one is just a phishing clone of bitblender.io

They have link to ANN thread of bitblender https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=436467 in their homepage however when looked closely this phising site have different tor mirror address bitblenduun5mnwp.onion but original bitblender site have http://bitblendervrfkzr.onion/

This post shows how similar the two site's look to each other.

The OP of bitblender (blender) says the link is https://bitblender.io/index.html
Clearly the one you used is fake.
My advice is do not get deceived by the trusted certificate. You can see in the following screenshots that they really look the same and they both look legit:

Even the fake one looks more legit to me!
1945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet.dat corrupt on: July 10, 2017, 05:37:26 PM
You could try making a backup of your wallet.dat, then starting Bitcoin core with the -salvagewallet option.

To do that right click bitcoin-qt.exe and select "create shortcut" from the menu that appears. Afterwards right click the shortcut and select properties from the menu that appears. A new window should open. Add a space, then the text in the line below to the end of whatever is already in the textbox named target

 -salvagewallet

This is an example of what the textbox should look like afterwards.

Click the apply button, then the OK button to close the window.

Double click the new shortcut to start Bitcoin core with the -salvagewallet option enabled.
1946  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover btc after windows reinstall on: July 10, 2017, 05:21:02 PM
So to summarise, download latest bitcoin core.
delete wallet.dat from it.
Replace with my recovered wallet .dat.
Start bitcoin core.
Cross everything.
Is that correct?. Thanks and sorry for novice questions.

Yes, the wallet.dat should be placed in the folder named Bitcoin that's inside the appdata folder. These instructions explain how to open it if you don't know how to do it.

Click the windows start button, then copy and paste the line of text below into the search box that appears, then press the enter key to open the hidden folder containing your Bitcoin wallet.dat file.

%appdata%\Bitcoin

This is what your search box should look like after you have copied and pasted the line above into it.

1947  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Which one web site is best for checking viruses/malware ? on: July 10, 2017, 10:25:47 AM
Which one web site you are using for check virus/malware? Currently i am using https://www.virustotal.com/ One of my friend suggest me this site. Is it good site for checking Virus/malware?
Of course virustotal is a website you can to trust. Everyone was using this webite for checking files and still it's most popular.
Good website, use it.

Virustotal is now a subsidiary of Google, so if you trust Google you can trust virustotal. A Spanish security company started it, and it became so popular that Google acquired it in September 2012.

1948  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-friendly banks on: July 10, 2017, 10:18:13 AM
Hello!

I want to create an exchange. Are there banks that are "bitcoin-friendly"? (I'm talking about opening a bank account. In my country banks are against it.)

There is a very old thread listing Bitcoin friendly banks here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=264679.0

A newer more up to date follow up to that thread is here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1800889.0

There is a list of free EU bank accounts that can be opened directly online here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1756494.0

Although those banks were listed as Bitcoin friendly for ordinary customers, they might not all be as friendly to a business running an exchange. You could try contacting them and asking if they accept Bitcoin business customers. Some of them probably will.
1949  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover btc after windows reinstall on: July 10, 2017, 10:00:36 AM
That depends on what version of Bitcoin core created the wallet.dat file. You said you think it was installed in 2013. The file format used in wallet.dat files changed in version 0.8, and that version was first available in early 2013.
The latest versions Core will be able to read any previous wallet format. The wallet format is forwards compatible (something created in the past can be read by stuff made later) but not backwards compatible (something created now may not work on previous versions).

Doh!

Thanks for pointing that out. I should have tested it before opening my big mouth. I just tried creating a wallet.dar with version 0.7.0, then opening it with the latest version and it worked.
1950  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover btc after windows reinstall on: July 10, 2017, 12:02:37 AM
Which Bitcoin wallet should I download? to give it a try. thanks.

That depends on what version of Bitcoin core created the wallet.dat file. You said you think it was installed in 2013. The file format used in wallet.dat files changed in version 0.8, and that version was first available in early 2013.

I know that the wallet was installed i think in 2013 so assuming it is core?. Thanks.

If a version after 0.8 created your wallet.dat file then the version of Bitcoin core available at this link should be able to open it.

https://bitcoin.org/en/download

Like HCP says, first check if the latest version from that link can open your wallet.dat file.

If you have to try using very old versions DON'T run them on an internet connected computer. Run them offline inside a virtual machine created by virtual box or vmware.

Bitcoin.org  gives this warning about the very old versions it provides.

https://bitcoin.org/bin/insecure/README.txt

Quote
The releases in this directory contain known security flaws and should not be used.

If you need to try a version from before 0.8 you can find one here. However, the same security precautions apply. Run it offline inside a virtual machine.

1951  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover btc after windows reinstall on: July 09, 2017, 10:13:21 PM
I ran a different recovery program and it found wallet.dat folder 96kb, a chainstate folder and  a blocks folder. When it had found these folders it classed them as in good condition yet the wallet dat folder is only 96kb? can that be right.
If someone else had accessed this file and removed any keys would that reduce it to 96kb. Thanks.

That sounds exactly right. I tested generating a wallet.dat with a very old version of Bitcoin core and it was 96KB. Make some backups of it then test it to find out if it's not corrupted.

Have you tried opening the wallet.dat from inside Bitcoin core yet? You don't need to sync Bitcoin core to find out if the wallet isn't corrupted.

If you were scammed you can start a scam accusation in this board.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=83.0

This is the format to use and information required when making a scam accusation. Even if it doesn't result in a refund it warns other users not to use a particular service, or trade with a particular person.

1953  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 09, 2017, 08:26:30 PM
As the market looks now bitcoin price should continue going sideways until 1st August and moon probably to $3500 then steadily to $5000. It has a triple confirmed support line at ~$2420 so I can hardly see it go below that, but even if it goes that's a great buying opportunity as it will most surely moon after Segwit is implemented.  Wink

I'm hoping it goes up a bit after the weekend. The bank wires start getting processed then, and when they reach exchanges the extra fiat might push the price upwards. However, it has been going sideways a long time so maybe it will just continue sideways.
1954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transaction input scripts on: July 09, 2017, 07:19:34 PM
Yes, the input script can include OP codes.
It's important to note that only input scripts containing pushes are standard.

So what happens if an input script contains other OP codes? Will they be ignored or will the script be invalid?

Most pools will reject it because it's non-standard. One pool that will confirm non-standard transactions is eligius. You can probably still use this link to push a non-standard transaction. However, it's currently migrating its website so I'm not sure how long that link will work for, or if it still works.

http://www.trustnodes.com/2017/07/09/mark-karpeles-former-ceo-bankrupt-bitcoin-exchange-mt-gox-heads-trial

Mark Karpeles off to trial finally. Perhaps we'll actually get some factoids out the eternal mystery that is gox.

When will people finally get some of their money back?

Ask Liquidator San. Perhaps the payouts are dependent on the trial's outcome. I dunno. It is technically solvent now so I'm not sure what's hilding up progress.

I think some company is still trying to sue Gox for $75 million, and I read that Bitcoinica had coins stored on Gox. The whole thing's a mess.

A company called Coinlab wants $75 million from Gox, and Karpeles is offering it $5 million to settle.

https://news.bitcoin.com/mark-karpeles-open-letter-coinlab-settle-lawsuit-5m/

Quote
...because Coinlab is suing Mt Gox for $75 million the defunct trading platform’s customers may not see their money for a very long time.

This is where I found out about the the Bitcoinica coins on Gox. It's from a thread where people are still discussing how to get their coins back from Bitcoinica.

So the 9th liquidators report is interesting.
Claims against Bitcoinica are: 91,300 BTC
$248,000 cash
$276,000 leveraged trading positions (hmm, I wonder if they are ignoring people with negative trading positions?  Maybe not a big deal as they were probably 1/10th of this amount)

But the MtGox trustee values the claims at $6.8 million (USD)!

The bitcoins were only worth around $10 when Bitcoinica went bankrupt, so this claim is equal to all the cash ($524k) and roughly 6.3 million left over for 91k bitcoins - or $690/bitcoin.

If the liquidation ever goes through, it looks like the NZ liquidators will get a sizable amount of money.

This $690/bitcoin is also a major increase from the previously announced value of $483.  So either they changed the Bitcoin valuation or Bitcoinica had a sizable number of bitcoins on the exchange that weren't subject to claims.  Maybe this is best explained by the leveraged trading positions!  As those trading positions should have been backed by purchases of bitcoins.

If you take $6.8 million, subtract the $250k cash.  You have $6.55 million.  Divide by $483 - and you get 135,600 BTC.  So it is possible that the open positions were equal to 44,300 BTC long (and you have to remember that back then they were only worth $10 - so it wasn't as crazy as this would be now).  That makes more sense than the liquidators changing their valuation of BTC. If they changed their valuation all the time based on market conditions, they'd never be able to liquidate.

1956  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Supporting UASF on Electrum on: July 09, 2017, 05:40:26 PM
The question I have about Electrum is will they split my existing bitcoin into Bitcoin before and after BIP148.

All the info is pretty confusing, but this has been mentioned a few times in the discussions I've followed.

If anyone knows how Electrum will handle BTC that is now in the Electrum Wallet come August 1st, let me know.

jg

If you don't move your coins in your Electrum Wallet come August 1st they will be spendable on either chain (if there is a fork). However, Electrum won't split them automatically, you will have to follow the instructions on the page I linked to if you want to split them.

1957  Economy / Exchanges / Re: any exchange that allows leverage to trade on: July 09, 2017, 03:11:15 AM
Hi do you know any exchange that allows leverage for btc trading just like forex leverages of 400:1 800:1?

i think you can try with bitmex.com but i don't have many experience in that site since i am afraid to trading with leverage and i think it will need big budget to trade with leverage. if you want to try in that site, i suggest to be careful and you need to know where the coins will move and only use budget that you want to trade.

BitMEX allows leverage on Bitcoin up to 100x, but no higher than that. I don't know of any exchanges that allow leverages on Bitcoin as high as 400:1 or 800:1. There probably aren't any because Bitcoin's too volatile.
1958  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Unable to recover bb10/android wallet backup on: July 09, 2017, 02:28:45 AM
I resolved this issue by recovering the data from the phone. The backup never ended up working. I guess I'll leave this thread out here because this may be an issue with the wallet software...

Do you know what version of BB Bitcoin Wallet your phone was running? In the app you can find it in "options", then "about"

The dev said there was a bug in version 3.54 related to restoring backups.

https://github.com/bitcoin-wallet/bitcoin-wallet/issues/166

I just uploaded version 3.60 into BlackBerry world. I suspect version 3.54 had a problem restoring from old backups when going the "tap attachment" route. I'm not sure how long the review process will take -- I'll let you know once its through.
1959  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 09, 2017, 01:40:39 AM

This is much more major than anyone seems to be acknowledging so far ... BIG money has most definitely arrived, let's see if they can behave themselves and not go bankrupt and look for taxpayers bailouts like they do with everything else.

Is it just a coincidence that Bitcoin started rising when that was announced? It's up by $100 in the last 24 hours. Maybe the rise is just noise, or maybe that news is already affecting the market.
1960  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: help on bitcoin web wallet on: July 09, 2017, 01:23:38 AM
What is the best bitcoin web wallet & which bitcoin web wallet lets you transfer bitcoins to a bank account?

As far as I know there aren't any web wallets that let you transfer Bitcoins to a bank account because no bank exists that lets you store Bitcoins in a bank account. The only bank I know of that offers anything similar is a Norwegian online-only bank called Skandiabanken that lets you link a Coinbase account to view its holdings, but it doesn't let you buy and sell.

http://www.coindesk.com/banks-offering-cryptocurrency-services-a-new-reality-is-arriving/

Quote
Norway's largest online-only bank, Skandiabanken recently announced it plans to offer clients the ability to link bank accounts to cryptocurrency holdings.

While some might see this move as one of traditional banks embracing bitcoin, really, it heralds a new shift in the evolution of cryptocurrency into the greater fintech space.

Skandiabanken announced its intentions this week to let users connect a bank account with a Coinbase account, allowing users to view their cryptocurrency balances within the banking app.

The app allows users to view their holdings, just as they would other investments, and, for now, the functionality does not include the ability to buy and sell cryptocurrencies. The bank has stressed it does not yet view bitcoin as a currency, but instead another asset class.
