Can too much cooling affect the cores on the Neptune miner?

It's winter here in Canada now, its about -20 outside. I have my basement window open in the room where my Neptune is running, a few of my cores have stopped working since it got colder.

Here is my miner status RIGHT now.

Here is what Advanced core info shows Right now.

I agree KNC should have stuck to making the hardware and not double dipping and they MIGHT still be in business today.

Not sure what these Exchanges are doing if they can't install and maintain proper securities on their own systems. Its like the big banks allowing anyone into their system without applying as much redundant security systems that they do. I guess some of these Exchange's don't take crypto currencies serious enough.

I was able to get the board working again, however I noticed the 2nd batch of Neptune's are garbage. The 4 run without any issues but when the get hot the dies stop working. With my original cubes I don't have this problem and wonder if its a couple of things. 1. the fan isn't working well since someone mentioned the 2nd batch of Titan fans were garbage and weren't the same KNC fans that came with the first batch, and 2. I should go the same route Titan owners have by replacing the part that attaches the heat sink with smaller part so I can put heat sinks on all the VRMs? (this is more of a question).

Not sure what I need to check on the cube that won't work, would be nice to know if there is any thing I can check, I have a meter, maybe I need to bake the board a bit? IDK.

Then again cubes are cheap. I could buy one from Ebay but I don't or won't know if its a a batch 1 or something else.

Thanks
25  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking on: December 10, 2017, 12:57:17 PM
Hello,

has anyone had issues with their Neptune cubes not hashing? basically being completely dead? long story short, I recently got some busted up Neptunes off ebay that listed that they may or may not work. well the only thing that works is the controller board, but all 5 Neptunes are dead. They are detected by the board though, but do not start hashing at all. additionally, the 'advanced' page shows some VRMS with 0 current output, but it seems the temp sensors are working, however the wattage never jumps up past 10 watts or so on any board. I loaded 1.06s and I was hoping to just dust them off, and have them start up, but no luck. I will take any and all troubleshooting advice at this time. thank you!

I'm not too familiar with them, but they look like dead cores or dead VRMs to me.
Some users here may be able to explain how you can tell the difference between dead core and dead VRM.
Some of my cubes have only 6 or 7 of the VRMs actually showing a normal voltage and amp value.
Some are either very low voltage or very low amps, but I don't care that much since I paid them knowing they weren't perfect.

If by chance you're in EU, I may be interested to buy the full unit (cubes+controller) depending on what you are asking.
One day, I'll find some time to play with the dead units I've collected.

thank you for your reply. I am still playing with them, and hoping for the best still. However, i have been messing with their commands in SSH mode, in particular what 'waas' tells me...here is what i get at this point...

img hosting

i have 4 modules plugged into ports 1-4 on the controller and it seems it is having problems updating the modules' frequencies. I will post more details later today when i get home.

I am having this problem with my 2nd batch neptune's and suspect it might be the fans not being the same as the first batch. I would love to find someone as well who is still making the kits so i can put fins on all my VRM's but that doesn't look its going to happen unless I get really crafty which I am not good at doing. Sad

Any new news with the neptunes?

I just turned on my 2nd gen miners for fun to notice they aren't stable. Some of the dies lose A and W once they start to heat up. Sad

My old 1st gen boxes are still going strong.

Let me know,
Thanks,
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: December 08, 2017, 05:32:30 PM
Hi guys.

Two questions.

1. my beaglebone board died a horrible death. Can I just buy another board from the beagleboard.org website and use the RC6 firmware to flash it? I haven't seen anything on YT about doing this.
- I think KNC might have given a hosed second miner (first time I turned it on...I know I know) it came with OS 1.0.2 on it when i tried to update to 1.0.6 its been nothing but problems to the point were it's completely useless now. Not sure if there is anyway to resolve booting issue? I tired the microSD card with RC6 to only find out it made it worse.

2. My miners, the ribbon cables does it matter how they go on? I put them on the easy first, 3 of the 2 miners were working but now none of them appear to be working, even on my good controller which I have from my first Neptune. I haven't tried with my old ribbon cables yet.

Thanks,

28  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / KNC Neptune issues on: December 08, 2017, 02:54:00 PM
I never got a chance to power up my 2nd miner which I from KNC until last night. After taking everything out and plugging it into my old PSUs which powered my initial miner I thought something was missing from the controller board, but didn't think anything of it. The initial power on showed 3 of the 5 miners were working in the controller and two were off yet their fans were spinning. I realized then the LCD display was missing on the controller and I had use the first port as port 1 instead of the last port. After changing the one miner around and checking all the power and controller cables when I powered it backup and all the miners show as off.

I found this site, http://4thamd.com/KnC/ not sure if they have the actual roms or not? I tried the 105 rom on my controller, nothing changed. About the only thing I haven't tired is taking my old controllers LCD putting on this one or moving one of the miners to port 6.

Any thoughts would be appreciate.

Thanks,

29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin not so anonymous? on: December 05, 2017, 08:53:12 PM
The IRS has stated that recently they can track down people who are making a profit of Bitcoin without claiming it on their tax return. I wonder if the Core Engineers will start to look at ways to keep Bitcoin anonymous from prying eyes of the IRS and other Governments?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
30  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: UPS recommendations for 2x APW3+ 1600w on: May 29, 2017, 07:41:54 PM
Hi All - I have an Avalon A741, T9, and 2x APW3+ 1600w on the way. i'm looking for ~5 min of failover support (enough time to rush over and turn them off normally) and some decent current filtration, even though the brownouts are infrequent and slight, i'm going for longevity. Is it better to have 1x UPS for each or OK to have one big UPS for both? I think i'd rather go with something like APC instead of the cheaper appearing brands?

Thanks!

You should a 30kV UPS and connect it to a gas generator, this way you have endless power. Smiley
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 29, 2017, 07:37:26 PM
I don't know how many characters your password was, mine is each of the three never generated twice 63 character passwords from https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm combined together. At the time Steve Gibson wrote this and offered it to everyone he said it would take one super computer 255 times infinity to crack any one of these three generated passwords. Not sure this is the case now.
32  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / How long does it take now to generate a bitcoin? on: November 10, 2016, 06:00:27 PM
Hi,

I have been out of the scene for a while but still have my two Neptune's. Can someone tell me how much time it would take at 3.4TH/s to mine a bitcoin?

Thanks,
Andrew

Someone needs to ban this guy from this forum. He's creating too much bad karma here.
34  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: May 17, 2015, 12:37:46 PM
I guess that the best way is if we find a solution with KnC before a trial. For an example, I don't think 3 btc is a fair amount instead of a Titan batch 2. If we find an other solution where they pay some more, I/we might agree with that. In that case, we don't need to go to trial. But if I know KnC enough I don't think they will pay a satoshi more then 3 btc.
If my bound is $8000 and if I'll get $4000 it's still better then nothing. But as you said it's no guarantee that we get the amount we request.

If they put them self into bankrupt, may so be. Then you loose the bound of $1000. If you don't have thoose money or if that amount is too big for you. Perhaps this isn't for you.
And ofc there are other things that could happen. But sometime you need to do some things that isn't what you calculated with. That's life I guess! Smiley Even if I only get $100 back, I will tell you for sure that it was worth it! Because I now that I at least did what I could.

Dude. There's no point wasting your time explaining things over and over to the same people in this thread. They just will not listen. Its like the Alpha-T thread all over again. Some people will always have an excuse to bend over and take it, others will fight no matter what. That's just the way the world is.  Notlist3d keeps going on about the same shit over and over despite being told it is illegal in Sweden to take no win no fee cases. Its also been explained that the court decides what reasonable costs of litigation are so KNC will be liable for the extra cost if they hire 50 lawyers at 50k each.

Instead of doing actual research, or listening to people that have, the same people keep coming here posting the same nonsense over and over. Leave them to it. If they are happy to have KNC shit on them and do nothing about it, it's really not up to you or anyone else to convince them otherwise.

I'm going back to lurking, I wasted far too much time on the Alpha thread and this thread seems to be going the same way.

No one would know if KNC would file for bankruptcy during the court case so your claim to "it's illegal in Sweden to take no win cases" is FALSE!

Did anyone take back 3 btc

I didn't for sure! But I know that I saw someone in this thread that wrote that he did it.

No the only way to get some more back is trough the group action against KnC. 2 lawyers from Sweden and 1 from USA.
http://kncclassaction.com/

You realize if KNC goes bankrupt in the process you will lose your retainer ($1,500.00 ish USD) with these lawyers. You'd be better playing poker at a casino! Smiley

Lets play this as a poker game. The pot is $12000.
Your call to win this pott is $1800 (retainer of 15%, might even be lower).
You should always take this call if your chance to win the pot is 1/6 or better. And do you think that the chance to win against KnC is lower then 1/6??
In my opinion the chance to win is mutch better! I havn't any experience from lawyers and the court. But of course there are some risks. Of course there are a risk to loose the case.
But I dont think that KnC wins this 5 times of 6 (5/6), I do rather belive that we win this is 5 times  of 6!

And bankrupt? I will celebrate if they goes bankrupt! But I don't think they will do that.
Some weeks ago this news came: http://www.bloomberg.com/research/markets/news/article.asp?docKey=600-201504290300HUGIN___EUPRX____HUG1916185-1
The name of that cerificate is XBT Provider AB, it's a part of KnC Group (where KnC Miner is included).
And some month ago they got a huge amount from investors.

And if you lose case you lose that + other's legal fee's it sounded like.  And a security bond.   So if you lose.... wow world of hurt.

And since the lawyers choose to get paid up front in retainer and not out of winnings, they win no matter what.

"So if you lose.... wow world of hurt"
Wow very dramatic sentence! But ofc it's true that if we loose the case WE in the group action will need to pay some "fees" and trial costs.
But that amount isn't compared with a "world of hurt".
I have some mail conversation with Joakim Strignert. I asked him specifically about this question. What he estimate and if we count high (everything goes wrong)/your world of hurt is:
We win in the district court. KnC appeal to the next instance, and they wins. In that case we need to pay all of it.
If we count that 50 people joins the group action and the cost are $50K. Each of us will need to pay $1000 in trial cost.

Ofc everyone that consider to join the group action needs to take this in his or hers equation.
A bad scenario will be something like this: Retainer $1000 + trial cost $1000 = $2000
$2000 to win $12000 = 1/6. And as I said before. I don't think that we win this case 1 of 6 times. If it isn't 6/6 I think it is at least 5/6.

For me it's good odds even when we count high!
But I can feel bad for those that however they do they can't take a risk. Even if we got the odds on our side, and even very good odds.

There is no guarantee that you will win $12,000. The courts could still say the max pay out below the requested amount, or better yet KNC could position themselves to go into bankruptcy if any verdict is handed down, in that case the company they owe money to such as their chip builder would get access to the money first then those who sued them would get whatever was left which might work out $350 per person. Is it really worth it?

There is so much more that can happen in the court of law that you end up holding the short end of the stick. This whole idea that if you give someone $1800 that you'll get $12,000 has been done before and has always turned out be a scam. You know what they say about things that are too good to be true right? This is one of those things.

Good luck!

37  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Nano - Stick Mining Fun! on: May 14, 2015, 10:31:21 AM
Price works out to 0.08BTC for 3.6GH/S.. Wow.

I think the days of USB miners even possibly pulling ROI is completely out of the picture.
I think these are neat little devices.. don't get me wrong. The design is neat and the speed is ok though.
Maybe for a collector of mining hardware or people first getting into BTC it would be ok.. But it will never mine .08BTC.

Using anything to get ROI from mining bitcoin is impossible today. There is someone mining at Bitminter who has a 500TH setup, do you think he/she will ever hit ROI?

At this stage Bitcoin mining is a hobby for some and a long-term investment for others. No one expected the price to climb to $1200 when it did. It will do it again the question is when. Since the writing is on the wall that the US economy (and it's empire) will crash there is no reason not be mining bitcoin. Smiley

I don't like to delete comments so I won't.  But if we could please keep thread based on the Nano's vs ROI in general.

As ROI in general is a completely different topic unless your talking about Nano ROI.

Nano ROI? - ROI means Return On Investment. Regardless how big or little (Nano) the investment is still ROI, so I am not sure what the big deal is?

any voltage settings for 200mhz or somewhere around this number?

is it normal for some asics to drop off, to come back, or to be at half wattage? Embarrassed

thx!

Default should be at 450mhz per miner on the Neptune. If you see them falling off it either because there is a problem with the PSU, or the cube(s) them self.

Am I reading this right?
People are still buying Neptunes when KNC are at the brink of launching the 16 nanometer cloud and have stopped any & all support of previous products?
Amazing how people will buy machines BEFORE doing any research.
Your only hope is a BTC price hike to thousands of dollars before the diff jumps again. .... Good luck with that.
Worrying about a few Gigahashes is so futile... It's shear insanity!
Do the math... a Neptune purchased now will likely never ROI... ever. Not even with free electric.

To a lot of people bitcoin is a a hobby, so they know they will never get ROI with and or without free power. Instead is a long-term investment. Bitcoin has survived this long even with the governments showing their disinterest in it and the media's attempt to distant everyone who doesn't know enough about Bitcoin from it. It's still here today and it will still be here once the US economy tanks. No one not even you for saw it rise to $1200 before it happened, so there is a very good chance it will happen again.

If you dislike Bitcoin that much sell me yours for $0.05 a coin so i can collect them! Smiley
