I have been mining just fine here for months but now it is getting worse all the time.  I have 3 bad shifts in the last 10 now.  I think I am going to mine elsewhere for a while.

Try organofcorti's suggestion. See if it's switching to backup pool or failing completely.

Did the difficultly increase by 4 or 5 times in the last couple of days? I have seen my payouts go from 8 a day up until the 30th of December to 7 on the 31st, and only 3 today, it's 7:30PM EST where I am.

683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The SEC Shows Why Bitcoin is Doomed. on: January 02, 2014, 12:29:02 AM
I just read this Timothy Lavin Bloomberg story and wondered if it's been discussed yet. I can't seem to find anything on it. If it has please direct me to the thread. The comments at the bottom are as interesting as the article. He raises some interesting points considering all the recent action from government agencies lately (like Mike Caldwell's recent letter forcing him to close up shop). Will governments simply regulate Bitcoin to death like so many good ideas of the past? Will business competition cease to make Bitcoin a worthwhile alternative? Is this just another naysayer that is missing the "point" of Bitcoin? Is the "point" to provide an outlet for crime or does Bitcoin have a place alongside other payment systems and is simply waiting to claim its market share?

Wow a news article from August 8, of 2013 last year. I think you need to find something more up-to-date to entertain everyone. It's clear that in October/November of last year the price of bitcoin going up by more than 40% puts an end to the August 8th speculation story!

Google just released a new version of Google Authenticator for the iPhone.  DO NOT UPGRADE, all your keys will be lost, and you will be locked out of all your exchanges etc.

Moderators: Please cross-post this to Important Announcements, it will hit a lot of Bitcoin users!

EDIT: See also http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1lp17r/i_just_updated_the_iphone_google_authenticator/

EDIT 2:  A newer version has been released by Google, solving the problem.  It turns out the keys were not lost, just hidden, so the new version actually restores them!

Why do you know an iPhone? The latest news from the NSA is that they control the data on all iPhones. So no matter how secure you feel the NSA has their hand in your back pocket at all times. Smiley

Granted we are now in the Q1 of 2014 I think it's premature to make a fuss about Knc and the Nepture. Lets just wait until the end of Q1 and see if any do start to ship before fussing. I find that when people start fussing too soon it ends up being over nothing, and they have wasted their time an energy for what? It's better to put your time and energy to something better than fussing over the future.

Well, if HashLast doesn't make KNC sell another batch, I suppose Cointerra will

http://cointerra.com/engineering-update-goldstrike-packaged-chips-system-board-assembly/

Their April 2TH/s machine will only be a 28nm chip, how does that start to compare with the 20nm chip Knc has?
Also 2 x 1100 watt power supplies suggests the 28nm 2TH/s machine will consume ALOT of power, so I hope you don't pay for your power where you live or you'll be paying a lot more for it! Smiley

that meant something when bitcoins were worth under $100

I guess if you found away for your hydro electric provider to accept bitcoins! Smiley

No information to make decisions may be the point.  A group sales figure here on bitcointalk has gear to sell.  It's not KnC gear, it's not too efficient, price isn't great, but the stuff is available and he was an early provider of ASICs to us in this country at the home user level.  He personally put ASICs in miners homes  here while BFL was blowing smoke our way.  If KnC were to say 'We've been working full work weeks producing Jupiters for release in January.' sales of comrade ASIC miners might be damaged.  KnC knows it has the Lexus of Bitcoin Miners at present.  KnC can sell at will all it offers.
They can't. As I've been saying, if they flood the market with new Jupiters, it'll massively impact neptune sales/refunds. Anyone with money would buy a dozen jupiters for delivery in Jan/Feb and cancel all neptune orders. Because 3TH now is worth XXTH in June/July. They can't risk a mass refund on neptunes, as they will have no business. Also, if they flood the market with Jupiters, it'll increase the network hashrate dramatically and that'll make the neptune look less and less attractive. Could even kill it.

So, they are in a delightfully difficult situation  Cheesy KNC can

1. Sell loads of Jupiters and forget neptune. Lot's of money, but the end of their business.
2. Sell limited number of Jupiters and hope it doesn't damage neptune sales or lead to mass neptune refunds (most likely scenario).
3. Sell loads of Jupiters, but make sure people with neptune orders cannot get a refund. In the process, make themselves the most hated asic company in the world.
4. Don't sell any new Jupiters and rely on neptune. But this bet relies on their competition screwing up and not being able to take the lead for the X months it takes knc to squeeze out the neptune. If competion surges ahead, knc are left behind. Any major delays in neptune - knc are dead.

How many more options do they have?

As you said in #4 they don't sell new Jupiters and rely on the Neptune, but as they continue to do the R&D before they ship the first batch the competition surges again allowing Knc to leap frog the competition with the Neptune. Remember they said it will do a minimum of 3TH/s and that they have the right to increase the hashing rate before its shipped.

Realistically it would have been more wise to buy the 2nd and or 3rd batch of the Neptune's as they are more likely to do more hashing than the first batch whatever its at, be that 3TH/s or more.

It's great to see they decided to focus all their resources (for all we know) on the Neptune and not be spread out thin trying to release a newer Jupiter while working on the Neptune as smaller companies who have spread themselves out too thin end up in bankruptcy pretty quickly.

Smoothrunnings,

What I am talking about is that after new PSU plugin, it no worky.  The Series2, 55nm units are shipping and they have 2 blades in them.  You can see what they look like by taking  a look around Ebay.  The problem was that the GreatWall PSU is a POS and, as you might expect, could not supply enough wattage to hit the 200 – 220 Ghash mark without the machine continually restarting (I’e not enough electrons to do the job at hand).  This, in turn, predicated the PSU replacement and VIOLA, burnt silicon smell (ie.. the magic smoke might have been released ...... I hope note).  I've verified that both PSUs are operationally fine by bridging the green wire to a black ground wire and BOTH PSUs kicked on just fine.  Thus, not a PSU problem.  I’m trying to diagnose, and better yet learn from those who came before me, if that burnt silicone smell is as bad as I imagine it and *IF* I need to order myself a shiny new controller board.  So, what you think?

H@shKraker

Avalon doesn't make them. It's some 3rd party manufacture that is making them and saying they use the Avalon chipset. You have to understand that the Chinese like to compare other products to the original one. At this point in time Avalon-asic.com doesn't make a version 2 Avalon with the 55nm chips, so what your friend bought was a knock off with the 55nm chips. I looked on ebay, nothing says "made by Avalon-Asic" in the auctions. They do say they use the 2nd gen Avalon chips. I hope your friend didn't pay $5,000 for a 150 ~ 200GH/s machine, Neptune machines which are on pre-order are selling for $10k and promise a minimum of 3TH/s. Smiley (the chips will supposedly be 20nm ones too.)

If the unit doesn't power on with the PSU and it's burnt inside likely you have likely toasted one of the controller boards it.

693  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: December 31, 2013, 04:51:24 PM
Hola brethren and Ladies,

A buddy of mine received his series 2, 55nm Avalon unit and noticed that no matter what he tried under no circumstances could the "Great Wall of China" PSU that shipped with the unit reach 200Ghash stably ( in a room cooled to 20F by ambient air .... it's winter).  I mentioned to him that LOTS of folks regularly upgrade the PSU to an OCZ1250 and that even though these are REALLY hard to find these days due to OCZ's bankruptcy any 1250watt to 1300watt PSU from a reputable supplier should do the trick.  I've had GREAT luck powering cubes with Rosewill 1300w units so I recommended he get himself one of those I can get 4 cubes on a single 1300w at high clock).  He did just that and it arrived yesterday.  We dutifully removed the top cover and disconnected the GreatWall PSU and plugged in the Rosewill.  However, when we tried to power up the Rosewill nothing happened.  My buddy unplugged the ATX plug and shorted the green wire to the black wire and everything sprang to life.  We were then able to access the web interface BUT cgminer was not hashing AT ALL.  This is when the real fun began.  We started to smell that all too uncomfortable “burnt chip” smell.  We unplugged everything VERY QUICKLY and took a coffee break to let things rest.  When we came back we reattached the GreatWall PSU to see if everything would power up again.  Again, here comes that burnt chip smell AND when I touched the Avalon controller board it was HELLA Hot.  In particular the voltage regulator on the controller board has WAY TOO HOT tom comfortably touch.  My experience in electronics tells me that means bad things are happening so … here are my questions ->

1)    Is there any reason plugging upgraded PSU into the Avalon PDU board would kill the controller board
2)   Is it possible that Avalon controller board is fried-N-dead?

Many thanks for your reply.

H@shKraker

Not sure what you are talking about, I don't recall there being an Avalon serious 2 rig being built by our friend Yifu. As for not reaching 200GH/s with the PSU in it, it would have been a good idea to check what PSU shipped with the unit. You can find 1300W PSU from Antec which are platinum standard. Corsair makes a 1250w PSU.

If you need a board you need to order it from Avalon-Asic or from whoever manufactured it. Also the Avalon's I have seen B1, B2, and B3's all have a place for the power plug that normally plugs into the motherboard on a PC.

Does bfgminer for Windows have a fail over feature where by if one pool fails the miner will fail over to the second, and if the and when the first pool come back up the miner will flip back to the first like it does on hardware miners?

If so how do I configure this on the command line?

Thanks

Back this summer when I bought my 4th module for my Avy B1 I noticed that there was a lot of silicon on one of the boards, it looks like someones fingers were covered in silicon paste and got it all over the chips. Could this stop the board from operating?

Yifu said it wouldn't affect the board...

Thanks,

I think they used non conductive thermal paste so I don't think that would be the problem.
Do you have an entire module that is not working or just one of the 10 chip PCB's not working?

I believe it's just one of the 10 chips, when I look at my logs it says miner 29 = 0 all the rest show as working.

The Neptunes won't even break ROI even if you have it up and running on the first day of april.

http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/5789931a97

Yes, so don't buy one  Wink

I've decided not to due to the estimate difficulty of when the Neptunes will finally arrive to the public, it would not be worth it for me to mine BTC with them. If it won't break ROI or barely go above ROI then it is not worth to buy 3 of them since I would just be increasing my loss.

Exactly. 845 billion difficulty in March 2015 is going to be a bitch Wink
That's 1.2 million 5TH/s miners. Amazing times ahead of us.

If the price of bitcoin is still low in 2015 you might as well just buy them and store them rather than mine them. Sooner or later it won't be worth mining them anymore unless some newer technology replaces ASIC's.

My system just popped up a "Bad Credentials" warning

Are you using F-Secure antivirus? It likes to block access to the mining server and causes that to happen. You'll need to whitelist the app/pool with F-Secure for it to work reliably.

Your pool is down again, my Avy's just switched over to my backup pool, and my USB ASIC's have stopped mining all together.

Please investigate, thanks.

It's the end of the year, and people may want to buy or sell their Avalons now.  I have posted a blockchain flea-market thread.  You can offer an avalon for sale, or make a bid on an avalon.

The question is what is a good price to get on Avalon 4 module rigs? Is 20$ GH/s too low?

Yes, that is a good question.  We all would like to have an answer.  This number depends on why you mine, what your heat, internet, security, and electricity cost, and whether you are paying interest on credit card or other debt.

To estimate this number, I used this calculator to estimate the total BTC earnings at my electric rate.

Code:
0.4576 (total BTC during mining lifetime) / 27.333 (GH/s) * 735 $/BTC  ---> $12.30 / GH/s  (based on btc-e, overclocked to about 360 MHz, approximate historical data from eligius)

Offer it at my auction for 3 module units.  I will pay 1/4 of the successful amount for your 4th module.  My destination zip is 56267, to discuss shipping of the 4th module.
Is this a batch #1 or #2; or a batch #3 style module?  I am interested in any of them.

I have the following, batch1, batch2, and mini. Smiley But I would like to get rid of the batch1 first, it has 4 modules and an ax860i PSU.

Someone locally offered my $20 GH/s or $2200 for the rig, I am not sure if it's worth selling it for that price or if I should try to get more for it?
