Is it safe to assume that is when an invalid occurs?

What does it mean when it occasionally flashes red?

Yeah the paper clip trick worked.

Hello,

I can't get my miners to power on.

Do I have to do the paper clip trick? If so, is there a diy with images somewhere?

for the 20th november batch, I've received a mail telling me that there will be something like two weeks of delay.

Sylvain

I got the same email. Very disappointing. I feel like the the KNC neptune fiasco is replaying itself. smh

Knowing how to write C++ (main codebase) and Python (test framework) is almost a requirement to contribute to Bitcoin Core. At the very least you need to be able to read C++. Even if you can't write C++, if you can read it, you can still contribute by writing documentation.

A good place to start is to first understand how Bitcoin work's conceptually. Then go through the open issues list: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues and find things that you think you would be able to do and that you think are interesting. Some of the things that we consider to be easier are labeled as "good first issue".

thanks for your thoughtful response. Smiley
207  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Let's say that if on: October 28, 2017, 04:43:41 PM
Let's say that I wanted to contribute to the development of bitcoin.  What would be your suggestion in regards to the route to take, as in what parts to start with?

I've always found it confusing and difficult to contribute to an open source project. In fact, I've never successfully done it. I've always wanted to, but I guess I didn't want to bad enough. Every time I'd want to contribute, I'd hit a wall I couldn't scale of one kind or another. I suppose those failures are a result of my own shortcomings. I've since, finally, aimed a spotlight on my blind spot of computer technology. I had achieved a level of comfort in the areas of support, networking and routing protocols, sys admin... But the big blind spot had always been programming and the methodologies of software development. Trying to teach it to myself was an absolute overflow of information, so I did a bachelor program online and went with a structured program. I'm really glad I did, because I really like the structure of knowledge. I've since been developing in Android Studio in my spare time, still working in IT support. I want to achieve bigger things in my career, and contribute where I can. I first found bitcoin in 2013 when a friend of mine and I were playing around with the idea of digitally stored value. The correct google search syntax resulted in my first exposure to the project 'bitcoin'. I saw the potential to disrupt fiat currency markets for a more positive result for humanity.  I got a bad taste in my mouth a couple years ago when I was set up to mine on a KNC neptune, which obviously never happened. I took some time off. I'm here, again, curious if there's anything I can contribute, besides hashing power. Question to those who DO actually contribute on to the core project: Should I contribute?
208  Economy / Service Discussion / Blockchain.info Bitcoin Gold on: October 26, 2017, 06:01:17 PM
blockchain.info hasn't made an official statement on the Bitcoin Gold fork, have they? I assume they're going to do the same thing they did with Bitcoin Cash, but who knows.

Looks like Bitcoin Gold continues to tank, so maybe they'll not bother with it?
209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: can bitcoin wallet be hacked by hackers? on: October 26, 2017, 05:59:33 PM
can they hack into our wallet. There are many professional hackers out there. What are the chances? Also what is the safest way to safeguard ourself?

Anything is hackable. If its created by a human, it is imperfect and can be broken by a human. We are but mere mortals.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

I have a small shop that's 8x10 I will be running them in, but I haven't installed a circuit breaker panel on it yet. I currently just have a 50' extension cord running out there. Its unfortunate but really my only option right now. Its plugged into a wall outlet that I believe is a 15 amp breaker... Without doing anything drastic, my only other option is to run two 50' extension cords.

 Embarrassed

Just better be sure you got the right wire size on that extension cords. There are extension cords with thick cables but that is just insulation, and it has small wire size. the wire size should be GA12.

10-4. Thanks for your thoughtful response.

You can in a way.

I don't know all the ways to make this work, but you will need a 30 amp breaker on the circuit you plan to use, unless you have 2 controllers 1 for each Avalon and plan to set them up on different circuits.

This 30 amp line can then be run to a single 30 amp receptacle. here's the type of receptacle

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-30-Amp-125-Volt-3-Wire-Locking-Single-Outlet-Black-R50-02610-0CS/300861633

Then you would get a PDU like this one

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Compaq-24-Amp-Power-Distribution-Unit-PDU-Low-Voltage-PDUC30a-295364-001/263255393782?hash=item3d4b3e85f6:g:jLMAAOSwFYxZ2~Xp

So it goes 30 amp breaker- I think 12 gauge wire 12/2 should suffice (again not an electrician), 30 amp receptacle, PDU. Then you can plug your Power supply units into the PDU and run them in the same location.

Odds are you do not have a single pole 30 amp breaker in your panel, so you probably need an electrician to wire this in for you.

If you can not make the above happen, then you would need two outlets that are on a different circuit. ( this means a different electrical line coming out of your home panel). If you have the panel space, you can run 2 15 amp circuits out of your panel to your mining location and put 1 receptacle on each circuit, this would allow you to run with what you have on hand.

What are your options where you plan to set up your miners as far as different locations with different electrical circuits??

Hope this helps
212  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Avalon 741, power source on: October 25, 2017, 10:06:02 PM
Hi theer not 100% sure of what you need to know. Do you already have the PSU's have you considered buying 1 PSU to power each Avalon, or like i did a large enough PSU on 220v to power 2 Avalon 741's.

If you have and are set on using 2 PSU's per miner, you just have to make sure your circuit is sized appropriately. the Avalons take 1150W so at 110 Volt you need approximately 10.45 amps per miner.

So you would need 2 15 amp 110V circuits to run your 2 Avalons, as you currently have planned.

If you run off a 220V circuit you can run 1 circuit I would say a 30 amp circuit with a 30 amp receptacle; in case you double your miner load in the near future. Pick up a PSU to power both Miners; I use Amitylabs from Ebay, but there are quite a few Miner specific Power Supply providers mentioned in the threads. This way if you upgrade in the future you can buy a PDU and pick up another PSU, without any additional wiring.

For electrical calculations W=V * A, or ask an electrician friend lol, they are good to have.

What I'm trying to determine is if I can run both of these off one power source, or if I need two power outlets.

I have purchased 2 650w PS for each, so 4 total.

I just don't want to risk a fire or overloading the power strip surge protector.

I am not an electrician.
213  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Minerwarez official Canaan Distributor on: October 25, 2017, 02:27:45 PM
I noticed today that they are no longer taking orders for Avalon 741s for November 20th. The new batch is for December 5th.

In that case, I'm glad I ordered mine when I did.

We are just whipping up a frenzy for speculation the attention has been positive and negative in many ways by attracting new users and repelling some factions that will now use the alt versions leaving the main chain unified. Forks do happen but it does bring about some short term confusion hopefully we will now see long term stability.

Yes, obviously. Do we need to post a disclaimer?

DISCLAIMER: EVERYTHING IN THIS THREAD IS PURE, FICTIONAL SPECULATION AND NOT MEANT TO THOUGHT OF IN A SERIOUS WAY. THIS IS A SANDBOX OF THOUGHT. PLEASE ENJOY YOURSELVES RESPONSIBLY.

215  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's your biggest regret about bitcoin on: October 25, 2017, 01:25:49 AM
Probably much like other people's - in arriving late to the scene. That's a big regret - but the biggest is all the countless hours I've spent in the last 7 years in front of a computer ignoring BTC... I feel like my entire gaming career has finally bitten me in the a** - dammit!!!!!! When I could have been playing in the BTC community omg it hurts!!!
Peace out yall - but honestly regret won't get us anywhere - gotta look forward not back Smiley Good luck all!

What's funny is everyone is complaining about being late to the party, yet we're all considered first adopters. Things are still very, very early in this technology.
216  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info Bitcoin Gold, hard fork, and BTC on: October 25, 2017, 01:24:27 AM
so are we getting bitcoin gold from blockchain.info or not? i guess we wont know until they let us know. Also my btc is in blockchain.info wallet right now, if i switch the over to electrum wallet will i still get the bitcoin gold from blockchain.info ?

Pretty sure they'll do it just like they did it with Bitcoin Cash, which is they'll automatically make it available to you.
217  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Gold Fork just costs Bitcoin $5B! on: October 25, 2017, 01:02:50 AM
Bitcoin Gold forked Bitcoin today.  The current price of Bitcoin is $5700.  Dropped from $6200 couple days ago.

Bitcoin Gold is endangering Bitcoin in at least 2 ways - 1. It does not have a replay protection and 2. It causes confusion to new potential Bitcoin investors.

It costs the whole Bitcoin community $5B.  Angry

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-24/bitcoin-retreats-as-another-offshoot-of-cryptocurrency-appears
 - Bitcoin Gold’s arrival pushes spot price down as much as 5.9%

This is a very dramatic way to frame things. Many technical analysts thought that BTCUSD was due for a price correction, and the local top in the $6200s provided the perfect structure for a long term double top. I agree that the Bitcoin Gold snapshot occurring persuaded some to sell (they were holding to get the airdrop).

However, many altcoiners were also holding BTC rather than altcoins to get the airdrop, too. Those people flocked back into altcoins and the price rallied accordingly. So I think it's incorrect to suggest that this loss in market cap is due to Bitcoin Gold. It's possible that the drop was coming anyway. And it's possible that much of trading activity occurred in altcoins rather than Bitcoin.

My opinion is the dip is more a result of the people's alarm and focus being on the segwit2x as well as the rallying of altcoin enthusiasts and shitcoin pirates trying to hijack the blockchain. Once it reaches an accepting bottom price to reinvest in BTC, they'll buy in droves and the price will increase accordingly. A great deal of uncertainty is perceived by most people, so for Bitcoin to remain Bitcoin will ensure that once the storm passes, it will be back to business as usual. There is only one Bitcoin and that is BTC Bitcoin, not 2x/segwit2x, or bitcoin cash, or bitcoin gold or whatever other forks and aliases someone decides to create. I think the functional utility of cryptocurrencies won't be realized for a while. I think it's totally great that people want to fork or take a snapshot, or make modifications and start their own blockchain. The issue I see is when people who don't have ASICs want to hijack Bitcoin.
218  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Gold Fork just costs Bitcoin $5B! on: October 24, 2017, 10:01:14 PM
We all know that why most people bought bitcoin which directly leads to the appreciation in the price of bitcoin was to get BTG equivalent. I really know that the price of bitcoin will drop immediately after the fork but bitcoin price will still go up later.

A well thought out response.
219  Bitcoin / Mining support / Avalon 741, power source on: October 24, 2017, 09:12:51 PM
I am curious what requires there are for power at the wall.

My two 741's which I have coming require 2x650W each, so 4 total.

How would I go about crunching the numbers to determine how I should be connecting this to power at the wall?

I appreciate your input...
220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info Bitcoin Gold, hard fork, and BTC on: October 24, 2017, 08:01:22 PM
I really can't believe blockchain.info are going to bother expending time and staff on a bullshit fork that probably isn't going to happen anyway.

Users have a seed. If there is a btg wallet then all they have to do is import it.

The more I understand about this SegWit2X hostile takeover attempt, the more I agree with your sentiment.
