Because in the first, we assume already that we gonna win and think that our money will grow. That is why we can say "We can't afford to lose" as we never think that at the very beginning. Of course, we don't think about it but it was overly thought as we are also supposed to be prepared for that scenario knowing that trading is risky and no assurance of making money. If we assume to earn money from trading, we also assume that we lose but this never happens in real life as usually we expect to make a profit rather than lose.

Behind every success there is a story of failure. If there is no failure in any work then it is not possible to achieve complete success in that work. When we do something in the beginning, there are more chances of making mistakes and if we make mistakes, we are more likely to fail. That is if we think failure is a discouraging one, well, we could also think not to try anymore because this will still happen to us. I understand that you were touched by his story and so you offered to lend him money but that was a wrong decision.
