201  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Using the heat from bitcoin servers... on: July 09, 2014, 05:18:19 AM
Unfortunately tidal power is very unreliable compared to solar and wind.  There are fewer places where tidal changes are reliable enough to generate sustainable power.  Hopefully that will change in the near future.
202  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What about bad pool luck? Or maybe it's something else? on: July 09, 2014, 03:59:23 AM
Thanks for the correction...
But even making 20% less than expected for 2 weeks sucks, or does it not? While I am new to mining, I have 20 years experience with a hedge fund. Will talk to our risk management guys about this. I know this much, that we would go through our trade systems with a fine tooth comb if our performance swayed that much.

Well yes it sucks, but what can you do other mine somewhere else.  You can't get mad you bet on red and the roulette wheel does black 8 times in a row (essentially another pool find more of the 2016 blocks then your pool).

You can't eliminate variability.  The only issue is whether o not something malicious is occurring at the pool either knowingly or unknowingly.  Most pools have gone through this at one point or another.  Back when difficulty was 9 million Ozcoin had a block that took 81 million shares, 9 times difficulty!!!  That was what caused a lot of people to leave Ozcoin, but the pool still survives despite a theft of almost 1000BTC at one point.

Eleuthria has nothing to gain really if his pool has bad luck - he makes more if it has good luck.  I'm sure he would love to see the number go back to neutral or above, but you can't will it.

Some people will jump onto the pool thinking it has had so much bad luck that it is due for a really good luck streak.

"Why are they buying? Only 39% of Chinese buyers said they intended to use their purchases as their main home.
Some may buy condos for their children attending U.S. colleges. They hope that, in addition to saving on dormitory fees, they can make benefit from home price appreciation by the time the students graduate.
Others are becoming landlords, buying cheap homes in distressed economic pockets, like Detroit, and renting them out."

Well if our government's answer to trillion dollar debt is to print more money, their answer is to take more assets and have that asset inflate.

Banned for noticing it.
Banned for having less activity than me.

Banned for having more posts than me.
Banned for stealing my ideas for reasons to ban someone. Browse the thread a little bit why dontcha.

Banned for horrible slang of "why dontcha". Might as well use caveman grunts "Og ban, smash good".
206  Other / Off-topic / Re: iPhone 6 Sapphire Crystal Display! on: July 09, 2014, 02:39:12 AM
Well this is nice for women who keep lots of junk in their bags or for people with kids. If they weatherize the phone it's pretty much idiot proof short of driving a car over it.

Sapphire is a nice material. My Raymond Weil watch has it on the face and I have never scratched it even after hitting it with stucco and a couple of even a chainsaw (don't ask).

At what point is it not worth it to put such nice materials into something that people may replace every year potentially.  The touchscreens in cars don't have sapphire crystal and you keep your car for longer than you keep your phone (although car is usually not as abused - well my kids abuse my car).
207  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets settle this, AMD or intel on: July 09, 2014, 02:23:55 AM
Cyrix FTW!  Whoops, had a flashback to 1996 lol.  Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

I had AMD machines back in the Athlon XP and Duron days, even an Opteron 144.  Been Intel more or less before and after.

Lol Cyrix, thanks for the memories Cheesy It was so long time ago...I feel old Sad

Check this out:

I remember getting a 486-DX2 66 in 1993 because I couldn't afford the extra $500 for the entry Pentium for college.  They used to have those Microsource catalogs around the country and I found some good deals through those.

Intel today has the energy efficiency in their corner, but AMD was better on a per watt basis for a short period of time.
208  Other / Off-topic / Re: The dumbest financial mistake you ever made on: July 09, 2014, 02:15:13 AM
I got into bitcoin in 2010. I even solo mined several blocks. I then got bogged down by trying to finish college, forgot about bitcoin, formatted my computer and lost all the coins. Yeah, that one stings.

You could have bought a slice of pizza with those blocks that you solved in 2010.  Such a waste, a good slice of pepporoni!

Since you stated it would take a long time I skipped the obvious and found it quickly.  Had you not stated it...probably I would waste a minute or 2.
211  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: KH on Scrypt.CC Vs GHs on Cex? on: July 09, 2014, 01:56:49 AM
Hey guys, someone clear this up for me please. a KH = 1,000 hashes per second and GH = 1,000,000 hashes per second... why would I buy from Scrypt.cc for example instead of from Cex.IO when they charge .006 something per GH and its .0002 at Scrypt for a KH there?? Way more expensive at Scrypt.CC correct?

They are mining 2 different types of coins/algorithms.  Scyrpt runs about 1/1000th the speed of BTC SHA-256, so a GPU doing scyrpt mines at 600KH/s as opposed to 600MH/s when mining BTC.
212  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What about bad pool luck? Or maybe it's something else? on: July 09, 2014, 01:54:04 AM
BTC 1 month luck is 80%....really not acceptable in my opinion. Can make the diff between making or losing.

Well I switched that hash power over to slush alone and my payouts are more in line where they should be.

Anybody already come up with the 'optimal' allocation between pools?

Again, you are incorrect.  Please look at the table correctly.  2 week luck is at 80%.  1 month is at 89%.  The pool is now down to 6% of the network.  The pool is run by Eleuthria who actually limited/stopped his growth when he got close to 40% just so as not to scare people with 51%.  Ghash.IO hasn't bothered to inhibit its growth at all.
213  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What about bad pool luck? Or maybe it's something else? on: July 09, 2014, 01:26:10 AM
I have been trading a total of about 3TH on mainly Slush and BTC Guild.
If you look at BTC pool luck chart for the last couple of weeks you will notice that their 'luck' has been underperforming
way more than chance alone would indicate. Do not even care to speculate if there might be funny stuff going on.
Slush often has a couple bad or good days in a row but never extreme ranges for extended periods.

Any long term miners want to weigh in this with their opinions?

The bolded part is not true.  Do the math yourself or check with Organofcorti.  It falls within a normal confidence interval.

That being said yeah it's not pleasing.  If you flip for who pays lunch and you lose 2 out of 3 times do you say the coin is rigged?

There was a known withholding attack that ended a month ago and that messed up the 3 month stats.  It is possible that somebody is repeating the attack but it is almost impossible to detect until after the fact.

What's funny is that when BTCGuild had very good luck last year people were suspecting they were somehow cheating.

If you're not happy you can try Slush or Bitminter.  You luck may or not follow, depending on how superstitious you are.
214  Other / Off-topic / Re: The Probability of Hard Drive Faliure on: July 09, 2014, 01:13:40 AM
I think Dutch was trying to point out utterly stupid it was for them to use the arguement that the hard drive crashed.  That's like saying my dog ate my homework.

Considering the IRS probably has a little more resources than the average citizen and with their servers with redundant RAID the chances of those selective emails be lost is like the chances of bruteforcing a Bitcoin private key.
215  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tutorial help on backing up wallet.dat?? on: July 08, 2014, 09:32:28 PM
If you upload you wallet.dat file to cloud storage like Dropbox, consider renaming it to something more secretive like pictures.dat or even contacts.txt so people are less likely to grab your wallet and try to brute force attack it.
216  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Running two different graphics cards for mining? on: July 08, 2014, 09:28:49 PM
As a total GPU miner newbie; those are my questions. Any help would be much appreciated:

I do have an old Mobo/CPU combo lying dead for years (AM2+ I believe, having Phenom x3 720 as the CPU but cannot check the Mobo and the chipset right now).
The board does support Crossfire/has 2 PCI-e ports.

- Would it matter if the ports are running 16x or 8x? Is 8x PCI-e already fast enough for mining?
- As mining does not use Crossfire, running a 280x with an 7950/290 is completely fine?
- Of course it does vary greatly depending on the fluctuations and coin choice but is 2.5$ /day with a 280x a decent number? (2.5$ as net profit).

Thanks in advance!

Hi.

Generally mining is as demanding as gaming  (actually if you mine 24/7 mining wears down your graphics card a lot more than gaming). I never tested it but I am pretty sure that if your card needs a PCI-e 16x port you will not be able to run it on an 8x port at all no matter wether you use it for gaming or mining. But I guess it would be safe to try. My guess is that windows wouldn't even recognize it correctly.

As far as crossfire goes: You can run multiple crads just fine. for mining you do not even need the crossfire bridges because the cards are accessed independently by the mining software. All that is important is that the drivers are installed and the cards get both recognized by windows.

For the profit I cannot tell exactly since I only mine bitcoin. In my view making any profit at all with GPU mining is decent. Make use of it as long as it lasts because like was said before: When the new scrypt ASICs hit the scene GPU mining will once again be dead.

Both of those bolded statements are wrong.  Until the recent X11/X13 mining protocols, mining is more demanding than gaming.  No game causes you card to reach TDP, while mining scrypt can cause that.

Mining is not bandwidth intensive - you can place 16x card into 1x slots and they mine at full speed.

Holy hell were Cyrix chips ever garbage.

Yeah I know.  I bought one Cyrix chip and board and it couldn't even install Win 95 without blue screening several times.  I swapped the board twice and the CPU once and continued to have problems.  Went to an AMD setup and had the machine running in 2 hours.

Sometimes competition for the sake of competition is not so good  Cheesy

Contact.  The ending left it open to make a sequel which I'm hoping somebody will still be willing to work on.

I'm still into my turn based strategy games like Civ and XCom.  I tried Skyrim and it was fun for a couple days and then I got bored.

WW3 is an economic war and you enlisted if you mined or bought crypto.  Perhaps you are talking about WW4?
