2042  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bit-Pay introduces "Touch to Pay" for mobile and desktop wallets on: June 22, 2012, 11:58:46 PM
Thanks for giving my site this capability!  Now we just need the default bitcoin.org client to support it.
2043  Economy / Services / Make me a logo for 1313.net 2 BTC on: June 22, 2012, 09:05:26 PM
I am going to put up a forum for gamers/gambling or some other way to monitize.  I am going to pay 2BTC for the winner plus 2% of the price after commissions I receive  if I sell the domain.  That 1% could be almost nothing or it could be more depending on if and when I sell the domain.  This gives you no ownership rights over the domain, just a shot at collecting a little extra for a good job if I have a good payday.

2046  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: F/S 20 Bitforce singles for immediate delivery. $799 in BTC + shipping on: June 19, 2012, 11:08:54 PM
I'll wait for the current gen singles to hit the refurb market for $100 each after the trade-in program gets started.
That makes no sense.  They will be according to BFL worth $599 towards new hardware. No one would keep em when they could trade in.  I doubt BFL will sell them for $100.

2050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Public Plea to Bitcoin Developers and Supporters alike on: June 18, 2012, 09:29:26 PM

Quote
1)    BitForce SC Jalapeno: a USB powered coffee warmer providing 3.5 GH/s, priced at under $149
2)    BitForce SC Single: a standalone unit providing roughly 40 GH/s, priced at $1,299
3)    BitForce SC Mini Rig: a case & rack mount server providing 1 TH/s, priced at $29,899

$150 for 3.5 GH/s ? .......this will surely be the downfall of Bitcoin as we know it.
Love me or hate me,
bitlane.

The only danger is in the beginning and BFL can address that situation.  In the beginning, one entity could buy up 51% for about 600,000.  If BFL does not allow one person to buy that many at once... or even just staggers delivery to known different buyers there is really not a big problem.

This is the free market, and the buyers will be taking a bunch of risks.  One is that they spend $30,000 and the protocol changes in such a way that they can not keep up.  Even buyers of the current FPGA single probably do not fact that problem as it is more programmable.

Video card miners can sell their cards.  People who keep boxes and keep items in good condition could get more then 50% or more of what they paid for their cards.  They are not doing so bad!

Think of it this way, right now bitcoin is subsidizing the power industry, who does not give back to the bitcoin community.  With bitforce SC products the money is going into the community instead of the power industry.
2051  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitCrate - break crates, get free Bitcoins on: June 18, 2012, 03:45:53 PM
I'll probably have to close BitCrate soon. Revenue I've been making with BitCrate has been very unstable and bumpy, and I personally want to move into bigger and more ambitious projects.

BitCrate started as an exercise in web development, so I'm more than pleased with the end result. I may start a new Bitcoin site sometime in the future if a good idea pops up, so don't lose your hope in missing out on some free Bitcoins yet. Tongue

EDIT :
I've closed BitCrate and paid the last batch of prizes. It was a good run and I had fun doing this, even if it didn't pay out in the end. Smiley
Please change title if possible too add something like [closed]

2052  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Wtf is the government thinking on: June 17, 2012, 02:24:04 PM
The government, ironically, is supposed to be a government for the people, in the USA at least.  Yet we have constantly seen that people are being controlled by the government, and our freedoms being taken away slowly, and slowly, and slowly,  yet we have allowed this to happen.

Let me list some things:

1. Tobacco Tax
2. Banning smoking in public places
3. Plastic bag ban
4. Ban on drugs (Looks bad, but there is no reason for marijuana to really even be banned)
5. Closure of coal plants (30 closed across the nation, decreasing our electricity generation capacity)

And more...

Unfortunately for me to make things worse, I live in a liberal city full of liberals that want things only their way.  They're increasing electric rates, banning plastic bags soon and making a big stir...

Electric used to be much cheaper $0.03-0.04 and now it's going up to rates such as $0.15/KWh.  They decided to close down a ton of power plants in the city while demand is rising, and decided that stealing more money from our pockets is a viable solution to lower demand and rolling blackouts.

So why don't people stand up to the government?  Our freedoms are slowly being taken away.  The majority politicians only go into government to control people and have power.  Of course that is human nature but we still can limit that from having such slow and devastating impacts on our freedoms.

Liberals?   The liberals are not trying to take away your pot.

Smoking ban in public places, I am all for it.  You can damage your own lungs in private, but you should not be able to chase me out of public areas with your smoke.  I am not against public smoking in wide open public spaces with no crowding.

Probably the only thing you even have a point on is the power plants.  When we close up a power plant all we are doing is freeing that coal to be burned in a Chinese power plant with less pollution controls.  That is after the coal is hauled 10,000 miles via ocean freighter putting even more pollutant in the air.

You could have brought up more sinister government actions like trying to control soft drinks........
2053  Economy / Goods / Old Playstation I setup 5 games 5 controllers- 5 BTC shipped usa (unit tested) on: June 17, 2012, 02:39:08 AM
Was told it works, I have not played with PS1 stuff before.  I have tested the unit with the star wars game and it appears to work fine. I would not assume that everything works (all of the controllers and other games), but it looks to be in good condition.

I can fit it all into a small flat rate box, will sell shipped in the USA for 6 5 BTC

2054  Economy / Goods / Re: WTS Home Depot Gift Cards on: June 17, 2012, 12:10:30 AM
Follow up to back up frank90.  I purchased a few but left two with partial balances for over three months before I totally used them.  He is not as far as I can see going back on and reselling them.

2055  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Here's the problem - BitCoin users are too cheap and just want to hide it on: June 16, 2012, 06:19:03 PM
I TRIED to buy beefjerky with BTC, but the business owner reneged on the deal.

I TRIED to gamble it all away but couldn't find a fair place to do it that wasn't just some stupid lottery or rigged site.

I TRIED to do lots of things with bitcoins.  The only thing I was able to successfully buy with it was USD.  Not surprisingly I was easily able to buy beefjerky with these magical USD, and my friends sure did enjoy taking them from me in our poker game.

You didn't try to buy any shirts or stickers.   Smiley

I ship product all the time and sell items for as little as .2 btc .

I do admit that people hold on to bitcoins pretty tightly.  That should change some as they are easier to get with bitinstant and others like them now.  I have found the market for services to be more lively then the market for physical items.  Logo design, VPN services and of course gambling.

The fairest place I have seen is Satoshi Dice, as the outcome is predicable and the house margin is low and all of the traffic is visible.

2057  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Miners, You Should Be Earning 7% Fixed Income With Options on: June 14, 2012, 02:39:25 AM
Our site is highly secure. Security experts agree a password at least 6 characters long with a mixture of upper and lowercase letters numbers and symbols is very secure. Our generated passwords meet this criteria, but are at least 8 characters long. Such a password is impossible to guess.

There are two other things that make this secure: 1) The site allows only 7 login attempts before locking the user out so brute force attacks won't work. (otherwise brute forcing would take over 200 years to crack) 2) We use two-factor authentication which means an intruder must not only get the password right, but also your security answer to your security question.

If interested please also check out this informative article on password security:

http://www.baekdal.com/insights/password-security-usability

We don't allow users to set their own password to ensure they don't use a weak one, and also to ensure it's not duplicated from their other Web accounts. You may have heard LinkedIn and Last.fm databases with passwords were recently hacked. This makes all user online accounts vulnerable if they used the same password.

That's was a good laugh.

Look, we all already know that you have no idea what you are talking about. So I have a suggestion for you. Stop arguing. Shut up. And listen.

- Start with abandoning that silly notion that you can lecture people who posted in this thread on infosec matters.
- Ask them what you need to do on infosec.
- Listen and implement the reasonable suggestions.

For starters I have a few quick suggestions (others will add to it, I am sure):
- Let users to chose their own passwords.
- Do not accept ones that are less than 12 symbols and do not contain lowercase, uppercase and digits.
- Use proper salting and bcrypt or some variation of thereof for hashing.
- Move away from any form of cloud computing, some dedicated servers are a good start, but do look into colocation options.
- A good litmus paper here would be ability to have properly encrypted partitions (all of them). If you cannot do it and do not need to enter the password in order to decrypt those during system startup, chances are you are doing it wrong. (BTW most hosting providers you kids are using these days will not give you this functionality).

There is more, but this is a good start.

+1

Also, while good sercurity is always a great idea....

The security of a site does depend on how much you are storing/moving with it.  Storing 50 BTC and you can afford to loose it?  Maybe a basic dedicated server will do.  Storing 10,000 BTC + and know that the BEST OF THE BEST are going to be attacking you.  Anyone working for you hosting/colo company can be working against you.
2058  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS]Late 2011 Macbook Pro 17" on: June 14, 2012, 02:30:54 AM
Apropos to this, I just found a relevant link: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/06/macbook-pro-unfixable/
1 out of 10 repairability score from iFixit.  Roll Eyes

Of all of the parts they complain about how hard they are to fix, the worst by far is the display.  Laptop screens get cracked, and most of them are sold for more then the value of the computer by the manufacturer, but at fair prices by third parties.  A common 15" lcd repair by Apple is $600, but by a third part shop it is half that or less as the shop can buy the LCD for about $100.

The retina display on the pro merges the top glass (custom for the retina pro!) with the raw LCD panel.  So now instead of a part sourced by a few makers (LG, Samsung, AU opt etc), you get a single source only from Apple directly.  So in that case, a non-retina repair would be about $600.

2060  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS]Late 2011 Macbook Pro 17" on: June 14, 2012, 12:44:08 AM
I can hardly wait for the 27" iMac with 5120x2880 retina display.
Shocked Shocked Wait, what?

Are we finally going to get some competitive display tech, above "HD" 1920x1080? That would be great... my old 3840×2400 T221-DG5 is only good for 48hz, which can get annoying sometimes.

Yes.  Apple will be the one pushing the market forward, though they are not the first as IBM did it a decade ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_T220/T221_LCD_monitors

Apple is most probably going to slowly introduce 'retina' tech across their product line.
