2041  Bitcoin / Pools / Help/advise needed for proper p2pool configuration on: January 30, 2014, 07:37:37 PM
I've just decided to run my ant miners using p2pool as I like the idea of keeping bitcoin decentralized. I've got a few questions, though. First off, here is my current setup:

Win 7 x64
3930k
16GB RAM
bitcoin and p2pool software on an SSD
175Mbps/175Mbps Fiber optic connection (extremely low latency)
added to bitcoin.conf:
blockmaxsize=1000000
mintxfee=0.00001
minrelaytxfee=0.00001

I've given both bitcoin and run_p2pool.exe realtime priority across all 12 threads. I'm currently using my main wallet, but I've read that this is not a good idea. How dangerous is this? If this setup is not ideal, I could slap a dedicated rig together using the following spare parts:

i3 3220 (2 core / 4 threads) Is this CPU good enough? Or would I be better served with an i5 or i7?
2, 4, or 6GB of ram (suggestion?)
Spare 64GB SSD

If I'm going with a dedicated machine for p2pool, I'd like to run some flavor of Linux on it, but I'm a total noob with Linux. Are there any particularly good guides in regards to installing all required software? Which distro would be best? I'd like a GUI if possible. (ubuntu?)

Thanks in advance! Currently running 2 ants with 3 more coming and 26 USB block errupters.

Does this seem to suggest that I'm properly setup right now?

2042  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 30, 2014, 05:54:09 AM
Hello everyone Smiley
AntMiner S1 and U1 are in stock, orders are accepted from Jan.30, 2014.
The shipping of this batch will be started on Feb 8th, 2014, right after the Chinese New Year.
Those customers who place the order first will receive the miners first.

Good stuff, thanks! Placed my order for 3 more units over 12 hours ago. Smiley

Any chance you might "pre-ship" some of these?  Grin

Happy New Year!
2043  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Server Power Supply Interface Board - for standalone miners and GPU rigs on: January 29, 2014, 10:36:24 PM
I think some info is needed, for the people who do not quite get it yet, plain jane below:

These server Power Supplies:

Originally costs 2000+ dollars were bought as spares in case of failure, they were all Hotswappable (redundant)
Protected the most valuable data at the time.

Close to 100% efficiency with a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of years (400000hrs plus) All 100% UL approved.

Make all but the very best PC supplies look like Junk, toys.... take one apart and look at it, beautiful expensive components inside.

You can arc weld with these supplies, all day.

Scrapped out for pennies on the dollar, during the energy crisis years ago, Bygone era. Never again to be seen.

I had 30-40 big old servers (PPRO PIIIxeon 4 6 8 way) on 300amp commercial main, and the breaker was warm. Two to four of these type power supplys in each box.

Why would you even compare a PC supply to these ? There is none.

The Negative on em is only the powerdraw, if you can live with that, these are perfect for what we use them for.

And now sidehack has made it easy to use for hobbiests who did not come from a blue collar (electrical/mechanical/engineering) background.

Be happy, I am. Cost of PS for your big rigs, has just evaporated Smiley Get ten of these adapters. I must have 100's of these powersupplies, all different kinds.

Thanks for the interesting post. Smiley I disagree with the bolded text, though. I'm holding a 2000w Delta monster right now that's about 91% efficient at full load, so that's a bit better than the 2 Seasonic 1000w units I'll be replacing and a hell of a lot cheaper too! Smiley Had a bit of fun taking it apart earlier. Much higher quality than any consumer power supply, for sure.
2044  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: January 29, 2014, 09:29:23 PM
this is just stupid, now if there was a topic I thought was relevant or a link to share I shouldn't be posting it???

should I PM everyone instead???

EDIT so this and last 10 posts should get deleted also??? WTF?

Are you serious?

If it's related to KNC it absolutely goes here. If it's not related to KNC in any way, it doesn't belong in this thread. Pretty simple.

Good stuff, thanks for the pic! Is that 12AWG wiring?

Any chance I can get another picture of how you're splitting each cable to the ant miners?
2046  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 06:44:48 PM
To all you guys seeking PSU's at a good price, why not just do this:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17466433&postcount=444

They sell for about 20$ on ebay.

I got one up n running perfectly on an antminer. They arent the most effecient, but cant beat the price.
Antminer @ 393mhz does about 425W @ wall @ 120v w/ these PSU's

That's what I'm doing, except I went with a 240v 200w Delta model which will eventually run my 5 ants OCed to 400MHz. Did you solder your 12v and ground wires directly to the power supply's outputs? Do you have a picture, by chance?
2047  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 05:41:34 PM
A cheap Ikea (or similar ) cabinet useful to be filled by antminer s1? ( it could be much better if it is no opened in all its sides for a silent solution )

Thanks

You'd still need the front and back open for proper ventilation, doubt it would make much difference for noise just having the top bottom and sides closed.
2048  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 05:23:04 PM
No problem, pedro.

I wouldn't buy them at full price, but I'm running two S1s on a HEC 850-TS, which is the same PSU as this Cougar one.
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=305
Unlike most cheaper supplies, it uses DC/DC for the minor rails so it's perfectly happy to sit there with no load other than 12V. I think I paid $124 after a $90 MIR for three of them.

Yes, this is a very important aspect. You want to avoid group regulated PSUs at all cost. You need independent DC/DC regulation for machines which draw mostly/only 12v power.

I think at this point only sub $50 junk PSUs will feature undesirable group regulation.
2049  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 05:07:38 PM
380w / 180GH = 2.1111w x 205GH = 432.7w x 2 = 865w

thats my take on running two OC ants from a 860w PSU anyway

Remember that 865w at the wall does not mean the power supply is outputting 865w of DC power. There is an AC to DC conversion loss.

865w x 0.88 (general efficiency on a Platinum PSU running full load) = 761.2w of actual load on the power supply.
2050  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 05:04:32 PM
Hi guys,

could you tell me a cheap and good psu for antminer S1 (with oc) ?

Thanks Smiley

Good and cheap don't usually go together, but if on a budget this is what I would trust:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151076
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151074
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094

Any of those would be fine. Seasonic is always the way to go for quality PSUs, you simply can not purchase a bad unit if it has Seasonic's name on it.

What would be the hash rate of an antminer if you OC ?

2 ants @ 400MHz OC

only with "#" oc mode ?  Have you changed other settings of freq file ?

Yes, only removed/added # to select frequency. Nothing else.

Hm, very strange. Which model PSU? Corsair AX860 or AX860i? Only thing I could see is that maybe the PCI-e connectors had loose connections (even if well clipped) which increased the resistance and heat per pin.

Each connection had its own pci connection. With a load of about 175w per cable.

In all fairness the psu in question was heavily used. I had three 860w fail in the same week, all were RMA and replaced.

It was an 860w platinum not the 860I

2 failed and melted while running 2 x antminer (720 -750 load). the other did the same but with only 3 x KNC boards pulling less than 600w

as i said the PSU were heavily used, but still the one with the 600w load was worrying and i had noticed the cable connections were running pretty hot before it happened.

Either way all PSU were replaced by Corsair.

Can't go wrong with Corsair when it comes to customer support! Glad they took good care of you.

I don't understand why this happened to you though.  Huh When you say heavily used, do you mean the PCI-e connectors were in bad shape?
2054  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 04:26:37 PM
I have 5 ants in total so that's 10 600w PSU's.

Eh what?  I have a single Corsair CX 600 Watt ( ~58/ea ) per AntMiner and overclocked (Edit: @400) they pull ~420 Watts via KillAWatt.  Why would you need 2x 600w per AntMiner?

They probably only have 1 pci-e cable with 2 connectors  Wink

If that's the case, he should cut the end off of the 8 pin CPU connector (4x 12v and 4x ground) and wire them directly to the second blade. Not sure if the CX600 is single or multi rail, but multi rail PSUs will generally have PCI-e on one rail and CPU 8 pin on another rail which would be ideal.
2055  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 open for sale again] The last round before the Chinese New Year on: January 29, 2014, 04:22:26 PM

Nice looking setup, here is a question that has been bothering me for a while, Why pay £239 for a 1350W Psu when you can buy a budget 600w PSU for under £20 Delivered ?

I run all my ants blades with there own PSU. I take it I must be mad or something, fair enough it takes a bit of room but will it not be cheaper as the PSU will only be pulling what it needs ?

I have 5 ants in total so that's 10 600w PSU's.

Going to get a multi meter to measure what it is pulling all my miners are running between 205 and 210 Gh/s

Cheers

You don't want to skimp on the PSUs! Cheap PSUs will have very poor voltage regulation and ripple suppression, and will not be able to put out the power they say they can without either blowing and taking everything connected out, or if you're lucky just powering down.

Please spend 30 minutes reading the following for your own safety (potential fir hazards) and for your equipments health.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=123

so you have 10 600w PSU's
so that lot will be pulling 6000w Max

i have 1 1500w running 4 Ant miners
hmmm i would who is going to win in the long run lol

That is not how switching power supplies function. Devices will only draw what they need. Using a 600w power supply with a 100w device does not mean you're pulling 600w at the wall. You'd be pulling around 125w at the wall with this example.

That should not be possible if you plugged them in correctly. Each blade will draw approximately 185w DC when overclocked to 400MHz. You should have each blade on it's own wire.

My configuration:

AX860i

1x Dual 8 pin PCI-e connector (only one pin used on one blade, other 8 pin unplugged)
1x Dual 8 pin PCI-e connector (only one pin used on one blade, other 8 pin unplugged)
1x Single 8 pin PCI-e connector (powering one blade)
1x Single 8 pin PCI-e connector (powering one blade)

If you're powering two blades on one single dual 8 pin PCI-e connector then the result will surely be a melted plug at the PSU end.

I melted the pci connections running two ants on an 860 platinum and that was without OC. Load of 720 -750watt.

Running them on OC will kill your psu

Well, I'm now a happy Bitmain customer.  Grin

I placed my order on the 23rd, so shipping took 5 days to Canada. The units were very clean compared to some that have been posted here. A bit of excess TIM here and there, but nothing major. There was a tiny amount of dust, which I'd compare to either 2 weeks of running in a pretty clean environment, or a day or 2 running in a dirty environment.

I bolted a second 130CFM 12CM on each unit (push/pull obviously) and fired them up. I messed up configuring the static IP on the first machine, and had to reset it to factory to regain access. Once that was done, both units were up and hashing within 10 minutes with static IPs.

Next step was overclocking, which took a grand total of 5 minutes per unit. Both are now running at 400MHz.

Power requirements for overclocking seem to be pretty exaggerated from what I've read while waiting for the miners to arrive. For initial setup (before transferring to my 240v server PSU powered "farm") I'm powering both units on a single Corsair AX860i running on 120v (PSU is 91% efficient @120v) with a killawatt meter. Running stock (350MHz) both miners consumed a total of 730w at the wall, or 332w DC each accounting for PSU inefficiency. Consumption @ 400MHz = 825w at the wall, or 375w DC each.

I forgot to take notes for stock settings, but one unit runs a little cooler than the other. The warmer unit has a higher HW error rate than the other by a pretty decent margin, but I don't think temps are the reason. Overclocked unit 1 runs at 41c/41c 2400RPM, while unit 2 runs at 41c/43c 2600RPM.

Ambient temperature where the miners are right now is 26c. They'll soon be happy in my cold Canadian garage.  Grin

So far I only have one regret... Only ordering 2.
