I was just thinking of a way to reward users by doing so. "Merit" is the reward already. It's an amazing system: I didn't need any from the beginning, and yet, I want to have more of it. It is not really hard to get a merit because Don't you see the irony of someone without Merit making this claim? In your respective opinion,is it really hard to get a merit? It depends: it's very hard for a spammer, and quite easy for an intelligent real user.
You're not the first to try a thread like this, and you won't be the last either. If only you would have read a few threads, you would have known this already.

Merit was designed to be accumulated at approximately the same rate as activity. What worries me though is that the most merited users have only received 4 times that amount (I'm not counting theymos as a user), and that just 100 users have received enough Merit to keep up with Activity. Those 100 users include users who got their merit through abuse. When I look at half this amount (0.5 Merit per Activity), there are 250 users who have reached this. If I scroll down the list further, I still see many names I recognize (and many unknown names too). I think many of those users shouldn't be restricted by Merit, which implies there isn't enough Merit going around. Maybe there would be a good idea to automatically rank up to Legendary in case you reach 2k merit and not have the required activity. @theymos, what do you say? Bad idea, that can be gamed. The current system of requiring both a long time commitment to the forum as well as quality posts is a good combination. Example: nullius! He posted for a few months only, then disappeared. If he would have stayed one month longer, he would have been Legendary in your proposal. But he lacks the long term commitment. |

If i send some Bitcoins to chipmixer and merge and split the same coin third times in the webif ( frontend) .
Do i get an mixinground from 3 or 1 ? Is this just the same split merge transaction in the backend ? Merging and splitting doesn't happen on the blockchain, so it all happens in the backend so to speak. |

In my humble opinion, "Self-made Legendary" means the user has both the required Merit and Activity. Satoshi can't be one of those, as he hasn't posted in 8 years.

The thing is that in case of small merit abuse transacations as 1 merit ,Negative trust is good enough, it would not allow them to particpate in sign campaigns which would stop their spam. Receiving Merit on a low quality post is not a valid reason to for red trust. That could easily be abused to target a certain user. Congrats on being the first non-founding member to reach 1,000 merited points! Thanks |

Self-moderated threads do not reduce spam on the forum. It only reduces spam in that thread (which I love to do!).
However, the many, many spammers who are just spamming shitposts into Spam Megathreads will just continue doing so in other threads. I've seen many Newbies who create several new threads per day, and they all turn into spamming frenzies with many others using the opportunity to repeat the same things over and over again.

With the obvious exceptions of theymos and satoshi, LoyceV might well be the first "regular" forum user to break 1000 earned merits. Which, for anyone who joined the forum after merit was introduced, is now the threshold to attain Legendary rank. That's quite the achievement. Since I realized that, it feels like it takes forever to get there. I plan to change my personal text to "Self-made Legendary" It's time to celebrate Big thanks to dbshck who pushed me over the 1000 Merit line. It feels amazing to be the first user (I'm not really counting theymos and satoshi for this ) to reach this! Now I can sit back and watch DdmrDdmr overtake me. |

You could extract all funded Bitcoin addresses from the blockchain, and see which addresses match your firstbits. But still, it could be another address having the same first characters, so you can't be sure it's your address (do I understand the principle of firstbits correctly?). If I'm right, that also means you can't find the address that belongs to the unfunded coins. To do this, start reading around here: Re: Get list of all addresses with a balance over x? |

This is not possible with HODLER. The device cannot install third party
applications, thanks to a specially designed operating system. With time, and a Wifi accessible device, surely a bypass could be found? Impossible. The channel used to transfer the backup is point-to-point encrypted. Point to point encryption has been cracked in the past. What future knowledge do you have to know that your encryption is safe from everything, even quantum computing and space aliens? Breaking into a device through the network.

This has been discussed before, and isn't going to happen. The reasoning is something like: it's unfair to the current VIPs and Donators who donated the full amount.

There are several tools to do this, and there are several services. There are also several scammers who will take your funds! Be very careful who you trust, don't send your wallet.dat to anyone (1 million possibilities is very easy to brute-force), and ignore all "offers" you get through PM! You can start by looking for "wallet recovery service" on this forum or any search engine. Here too: there are legit services, and there are scams. |

I don't think that's possible: even if you could pay for this feature, the server only knows who you are after completing the captcha.
If you remove the captcha so you can identify as a paying user first, I think that defeats the purpose of having a captcha as a DDOS protection.
As far as I've tested, you can set your Tor browser to remember cookies, and click "Always stay logged in:". If you do that, you should probably dedicated that browser to Bitcointalk only, as it reduces your privacy. But at least you don't have to solve the captcha again.

At the end of the day, quality posts can be made, and then deleted after. I say automatically removing the merit once its been deleted isn't exactly the best approach. What I would say is, if the post is deleted directly by a moderator or whatever then it should be removed. However, if you made a reply in a thread which was removed it shouldn't. So, only if directly removed should merit be removed too. Self moderated threads shouldn't count. I'll use an example which I've used before: I merited a scam-warning (because it's worth reading), until the OP got nuked and the scam warning got deleted too. That post deserved it at that time, and a Mod removed the entire thread. I don't think that Merit should be removed. However, if I look at my full Merit history, I see about a dozen of deleted posts merited by me, and a few of my merited posts got deleted too. (note: if a post got deleted after I scraped the title, I don't change the label into "deleted" anymore) Considering this is at most 1-2% of all Merit, I'd say it's totally acceptable to remove all Merit from all deleted posts. For legit users, it will just be like the very small change that happens to your Post Count once in a while. For abusers on the other hand, the majority or all their Merit can disappear if it's removed once a post gets deleted! This will be well worth the small inconvenience of legit users losing a small fraction of their Merit. This brings me to the conclusion: I'm in favor of removing Merit once a post gets deleted. This should not be limited to posts deleted by Moderators, since many Merit abusers hide the evidence by deleting their own post. |
