221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think Satoshi will ever spend his bitcoins? on: August 13, 2014, 06:31:02 AM
When that Dorian guy was accused of being Satoshi, apparently the reral satoshi logged on to a website via his old handle and said it wasn't Dorian. Was that ever confirmed as real or was it fake, or could nobody be sure?
It was defiantly an account that was controlled by satoshi prior to bitcointalk.org coming into existence. In theory it could have been hacked but I would find it very unlikely that the account gets hacked the day newsweek goes with their story. Even more unlikely that it would be hacked and not used until then.

I think it would have been pretty cool to see Satoshi donate some of his bitcoin to the fund that was going to newsweek's satoshi.
It would be nice to see Satoshi donate his bitcoins to a charity that accepts them.
Or some other foundation. But it's all up to Satoshi. I think he'll spend them on himself when he really needs it.
But then we can all track down where it goes because of the wallet? o-o
I think that he will almost certainly spend his coins in small amounts if he does spend them on his own expenses. It would also be likely that he use mixing services so that his identity will be kept private.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to keep your bitcoins secure if you suddenly disappear (jail or prison) on: August 13, 2014, 06:29:46 AM
Encrypted paper wallet or you take some time to remember the private key using some tactics.
This is why a paper wallet would not work for this situation. The paper wallet could simply be taken from you and destroyed so you would have no way of spending the coins on it (unless you had memorized the private key)
223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto in Academia on: August 13, 2014, 06:28:07 AM
Just curious. Globally, any colleges or universities creating formal courses in cryptocurrency? It seems like a logical extension of Economic theory or computer sciences.
Several universities are incorporating bitcoin into both their economics and computer/IT related classes. To a less extent some universities have courses that teach bitcoin specifically.

I have also seen many posts about people writing graduate level papers about bitcoin and writing their desertion (to get their PhD) on bitcoin.
224  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What should I do with over $4-5 worth in BTC? on: August 13, 2014, 06:24:24 AM
I can buy them off you with paypal, and you can buy anything you want Smiley.

Risky, because you can dispute the transaction later on and reverse it.  Wink
For such small amounts the risk is not as big. It is true that it has been said that people have been known to scam for even less then .01BTC however I personally don't think it would be worth it to try to scam for such a small amount.

Agree. Might not be worth it to try and scam at current rates. But if bitcoin appreciates, then it is a different ball game. Cheesy
You should never assume that the price will appreciate when making a business decision with bitcoin. If you think the price will go up then you should buy on an exchange or via LBC. You should not accept a discounted payment just because you think the price will increase in the future.
225  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Mining Contracts on: August 13, 2014, 06:22:55 AM
Have you checked pbmining?

They have a 5 year contract, etc.

A 5 year contract man? That's an eternity in the Bitcoin world! Bitcoin is only just around for 5 years now, man! That's crazy. I wouldn't pay for 5 years of mining service, nah....
A 5 year contract is really too long as however much mining capacity you buy now will generate very little in 5 years. With PBmining's contracts you are essentially prepaying for 5 years worth of electricity. Since after some amount of time (less then 5 years) the amount of bitcoin your contract will earn will be less then what they spend on electricity you will be essentially forced to continue mining after doing so is unprofitable, but it is that you pay for the electricity in advance.
226  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I Earn 0.00002970 Bitcoin For One Hour on: August 13, 2014, 06:19:42 AM
This is probably one of the "fastest" faucets out there. As you can see from your OP this is a very small amount to earn and is not worth your time.
227  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help - "Insufficient funds" error yet there IS money in the account on: August 13, 2014, 06:18:33 AM
What client are you using? Have you potentially imported your keys into a second wallet and spend some of your coins with the 2nd wallet but are not attempting to spend them in the 1st one?
228  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about Confirmations on: August 13, 2014, 06:17:11 AM
Stay away from POS coins. They are much more vulnerable to an attack against the blockchain and generally will hold much less value then bitcoin.
229  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I'm Broke! Plese help me:( on: August 13, 2014, 06:16:14 AM
Maybe if you invested all that money directly in bitcoins instead of in mining equipment you would have earned some money,
don't do the same error in the future...
At one point miners were a good investment. Unfortunately this time has more or less passed as the cost to buy a miner per the amount a miner will mine is too high.
230  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is the West gearing up to invade Russia once again? on: August 13, 2014, 06:14:41 AM
There is only one issue, this so-called anti-missile shield symply won't work because at the current level of technology it's impossible to intercept even old soviet ICBM. Soviet missiles were made taking into account the possibility of such a system installation by suggested enemy, russian missiles have some additional technologies to make it even more difficult.

I remember reading a NATO explanation that the missile shield is intended to intercept any future ballistic missile attacks by rogue states such as Iran. The NATO chief himself has said that the shield is useless against the Russian ICBMs.
I don't think they would be useless, but they would likely be less effective as Russia likely has more advanced missiles then rogue states would likely have. These shields are also largely untested in real world situations making it hard to know how effective they are in any situation.
231  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 17000 sign up to lawsuit against Facebook for supporting NSA spying on: August 13, 2014, 06:13:03 AM
Sadly the law suit won't have much ground to stand on and will just be brushed aside.
I doubt it will be brushed aside, but I don't think the plaintiffs will win. This looks like a way for class-action trial lawyers attempting to bully their way to get a settlement from facebook so they can get paid.

This was said above, but it should be said again that the best way to stop the spying is at the polls.

we must keep the independence and freedom of the digital world, i do not agreed to allow FB to track my digital wen i signed up
Facebook is always going to track you to some extent. This is just how FB is setup. Even if they were not to do it for advertising purposes, they would do it to be able to do it via whatever you post on your wall, status, other people's wall, ect.

'Targeted' advertising is the USP of internet companies like facebook and google. But sharing of information, especially of users all over the world, with the US government? I am not sure whether that is acceptable.
This is not acceptable but it is not an issue with facebook, it is an issue with the government. This was something that facebook has been forced to do. A much better solution would be to elect politicians that would put an end to this kind of requests for information.
232  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What good things has Obama had since he is elected ? on: August 13, 2014, 06:11:15 AM
OK President Obama is probably not the best US president in history but at least he is better than Pres. Bush.
He didn't rush in the new wars, tried to start peace talk in Israel and Palestine. tried to make friends with partners in Europe...
He didn't make some big success until now but still at least he tried to make some positive changes and this, in my opinion, makes him better than some other president in the near future.

Only a few short years after Bush left office several democracies have popped up in the middle east that were likely influenced by the war in Iraq (and Afghanistan to a less degree). As a result of the wars that Bush started the world is a much safer place.
233  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is it a bad decision to payoff mortgage early on: August 13, 2014, 06:09:07 AM
I was always under the thought the faster you pay it the more weight is off your shoulders so I don't quite understand why others are disagreeing.

because people think that investing the money instead of paying it back will yield a higer return than the 4.4%.

But those guys don't think about taxes and risk.

You only pay tax on gain. As for risk, you can always buy investment grade bond which offer higher than 4.4% yield.

Yah but you can't deduct the 4.4% you pay from your gains.... So if you only get 4.4% on your investment you will lose about ~25% (of the 4.4%) depending on where you live.
It is always better to have/make more money. Even if this means that you pay more in taxes, the net effect is that your bank account is larger, or you can spend more money on things you like.
234  Other / Politics & Society / Re: New Orleans "Street Scams" on: August 13, 2014, 06:07:40 AM
You never know what you are going to see on Bourbon Street, especially late at night. There is no place else like it in this country. If you can't have fun walking down Bourbon, you can't have fun.

Can you give an example? isn't the Bourbon street in the french neighbourhood or something? excuse my ignorance Smiley I'm not familliar with the US and especially with New Orleans
Bourbon street in the french quarter,New Orleans
Most anyone who comes to New Orleans wants to experience Bourbon Street. Many sights and sounds you won't experience anywhere else. You can walk around with a cocktail and take in the sights. There are many clubs/bars with live music by mainly NO musicians. A must-do for any first time tourist. Note: It can be a bit crowded at times so don't go if you don't like crowds.
I think a lot of the "fun" that can be had in New Orleans has to do with drinking and getting drunk. If this is not your "cup of tea" then New Orleans and burbon street is likely not for you.
235  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Washington Post: Obama vacations as the world burns on: August 13, 2014, 06:06:11 AM
As illegal immigrants pour through the southern border, Obama is on another golf-a-thon. He reaches the 9th hole and hops on his cell phone to drop a few bombs then hits the back 9. In other news, I just realized he's left handed.
Oh the irony.

I think he is wanting to allow illegal immigrants into our country as this makes him look good in the eyes of legal immigrants, giving them more reasons to vote for his party in the midterms and the next presidential election.
236  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Exclusive: Obama Told Lawmakers' Criticism of His Syria Policy is 'Horsesh*t' on: August 13, 2014, 06:03:59 AM

...
Just before the congressional recess, President Obama invited over a dozen Senate and House leaders from both parties to the White House to talk about foreign policy. According to two lawmakers inside the meeting, Obama became visibly agitated when confronted by bipartisan criticism of the White House’s policy of slow-rolling moderate Syrian rebels’ repeated requests for arms to fight the Assad regime and ISIS.

According to one of the lawmakers, Sen. Bob Corker asked the president a long question that included sharp criticisms of President Obama’s handling of a number of foreign policy issues—including Syria, ISIS, Russia, and Ukraine. Obama answered Corker at length. Then, the president defended his administration’s actions on Syria, saying that the notion that many have put forth regarding arming the rebels earlier would have led to better outcomes in Syria was “horseshit.”

On one hand, the critics are saying slowing arm shipments to these so-called rebels made ISIS and co better off. Obama say horseshit. But, a year or so ago we all knew these rebels were terrorists that were taking on Assad and now they've mutated or shapeshifted to the point that they're now most likely ISIS or closely related. In reality, this is a phony dichotomy as both policies here have benefited these terrorist rebels that are now having carte blanche in this region all the while being propped up originally by the CIA. When times are slow (peace) the black ops get busy to shuffle up the deck and pull out the aces to get the MIC rolling again in profits or at minimum, strike up domestic sentiments when they've tired of intervention. Just like the immigration crises, buff up the humanitarian situation making it an easier pill to swallow. Then once digested, focus can be turned away from domestic issues by the daily news circuit.
I think this reflects Obama'a arrogance as he tends to do whatever he so chooses. I think he is too against using our military for any purpose that he is letting things get way out of hand throughout the world. By intervening early in conflicts, other conflicts would likely not pop up as they have recently as counties/groups would know that the US would step in.
237  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russia is getting ready to bomb the USA :( on: August 13, 2014, 06:00:24 AM
As for China, they have no problem producing either, and they already have a good stock of Hydrogen bombs (Fission-fusion) and A-bombs (Fission)

Yes. They are hiding their nukes in underground tunnels. More than 3,000 nukes are similarly hidden in China.

China 'hiding up to 3,000 nuclear warheads in secret tunnels'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8927580/China-hiding-up-to-3000-nuclear-warheads-in-secret-tunnels.html

But their missiles are not as good as the Russian / American ones and they don't have advanced submarines which are capable of launching SLBMs.
I would not be surprised if most countries that have nuclear weapons have many more nukes then they publicly admit and what they agreed to. I don't think this is something unique to china.
238  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin Feeding The Homeless on: August 13, 2014, 05:58:45 AM
Sounds like a poor idea to me. We already have food stamps, but frankly cash is the best solution for the small shopping a homeless can afford. The blockchain wasn't created to record all the sodas, sandwiches and beer sales on the planet. I would never use BTC to pay for any of those items. Cash is just easier.
A lot of homeless people do not receive food stamps for any number of reasons. Likely mainly because of ignorance of the food stamp program, but also because they are not eligible because of prior convictions, or they quit their job.
239  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Top Obama Aide: Rand Paul Is ‘Most Intriguing’ Republican on: August 13, 2014, 05:57:17 AM
He certainly has a way with words. He's also a bit of a douche though and seems willing to compromise good policy formulation for the sake of political posturing. But I guess that is everyone on the hill.
I'm not so sure I would agree with this, but I can't see how he could possibly win a republican primary, so I doubt it matters.
I agree. I don't think he would appeal enough to most of the conservative base to be able to win the primaries.
240  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Banning gay men from giving blood is stupid on: August 13, 2014, 05:56:07 AM
HIV is a retro-virus. Retro-viruses are harmless, everyone is full of them.
HIV will eventually turn into AIDS which will kill you (it actually makes it easier for sickness to kill you, but the point is still there). If you have HIV it will eventually turn into AIDS.
