2201  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is anyone working in a "pruned download"? on: October 18, 2022, 02:21:54 PM
Spinning 1TB drives are under $40.00 as are 512GB SSD it's no longer that big a deal.
But it's sometimes unnecessary. A person who firstly acquires bitcoin, and only wants to be able to spend it privately and securely, doesn't have to hold ~750,000 blocks. Even if it costs him little money. It's storage waste.

I guess I look at it as most people who are just getting BTC to use are more likely to just run a SPV client. Keep in mind that if your PC is not on 24/7 and you do not always keep the wallet open when it is on then you will probably have to wait a while after opening up your wallet at that point to be able to spend your coins.

I don't know if I can agree, but yeah, the more actual archive nodes out there, the better for IDB for those new users. Especially for a decentralized network, the Bitcoin Blockchain must be made as redundant as possible. BUT pruned nodes also help Bitcoin to decentralize further by giving those computers with low available disk space to join the network. Sometimes office/home/school computers can also double as a  Bitcoin node, no?

Home yes, school possibly, office only if you own the company. Putting non work software on your work PC is a good way to get fired. Also, unless you are remote work and connecting to an office PC, more and more offices are shutting down PCs and everything else at night. It's a bit more secure and saves power.

2202  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Net Bitcoin ATMs growth drops globally for the first time ever on: October 18, 2022, 02:04:25 PM
Was talking to someone removing a BATM at a local place that had been there for years near JFK. Although he did not give a number, he more or less said that the owner of the shop wanted close to 3x what they had been paying for floor space so he is pulling it. Apparently the other people renting space there including a regular ATM and a bill pay kiosk either have not had the increase hit yet or the profit margins are so large on their businesses it's not a big deal.

2203  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Get your Bitcoin off any exchange supporting "BSV" (due to insolvency risk) on: October 18, 2022, 12:23:07 PM
Since it's still trading at close to $50 a coin I took a look at CoinEx which is the only exchange I have an account in that trades it they have a 10 block confirm for trading and 30 blocks to withdraw. Either they know something we don't or have a lot more confidence that there will not be a massive reorg. Does anyone else with an account at an exchange that still trades see anything different?

I don't see the point in taking the risk at the moment, but I guess you can say that about any coin that has low to mid hashrate with an abundance of ASICs out there.

2204  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Celsius Exchange Data Dump Is a Gift to Crypto Sleuths—and Thieves on: October 18, 2022, 01:10:12 AM
And yikes, this whole thing has been a complete shit show from the beginning.  I wasn't even aware of Celsius until it imploded, and I was definitely surprised to learn that so many people had money invested with them.

<cough> Bernie Madoff <cough>

Tell people they will earn 5% they won't believe you. Tell them you can get 40% though your secret method they won't ask, they will just throw cash at you. Or you have not read this board: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=207.0 If you think it started with crypto you are several thousand years to late. Greed will blind people to the obvious, and there will always be people to take advantage of that.

2205  Economy / Reputation / Re: How many red tags is the scammer Royse777 going to get? on: October 17, 2022, 06:25:51 PM
...Bottom line, do we think Royse is a scammer in the sense he/she would steal your money? I honestly want to say no, but all this hiding and trying to collect money for casino critique while hiding whom you actually are makes me want to rethink that. Why not be honest? I'm not gonna tag them, but I do not fully trust them and haven't since the whole drama started. I think I was justified to add them to my ~list.

The only thing that I will say to that is that *I* have done it (not here). For a while I had a friend in Poland who worked in a salvage yard who had access to some automotive parts that people here in the US wanted.

I wanted to help and make some money so I started an new account, on the Audi / VW forum. I was well known there as me and even helped run some events so I probably could have mode more $$$ had I let people know who the other account was.

But I wanted NOBODY to know who I was with the other account. Didn't need or want the hassle, didn't need the cross over crap (You said these ABS modules are junk why are you selling them?Huh) and so on. DaveF was DaveF and PartMover2000 had nothing to do with him. Could see the same thing here even before the BitLucy, i.e. you said this casino was good and now I have having "X" problem with it, why don't you fix it?

Full disclosure, Royse777 did contact me to do some work, and I was gong to do it, just never had the time. Money was never discussed.

2206  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Suspected Tornado Cash (Ethereum mixer) developer arrested on: October 17, 2022, 03:27:32 PM
To use the car analogy that bbc.reporter used.
No, you can't go after the person who BUILT that car. Unless they KNEW it was going to used in the commission of a crime.
The getaway driver is frequently charged.

Writing the software is not a crime. Running may or may not be depending on what transactions went through. DELIBERATELY helping people who have sanctions against them is a crime. And here is where it gets murky, receiving funds from somebody with sanctions against them is also a crime. EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW IT. It's the ignorance is no excuse. Sucks, but that has been up and down the court system for years.

2207  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BTCapsule is now FREE and logs year from Bitcoin Core’s mediantime on: October 17, 2022, 12:11:28 PM
It's going in a good direction and it's a work in progress so he can keep updating it as we give more suggestions.
EVERYTHING is going to have some sort of vulnerabilities so long as they are being addressed as they are discussed.

The point of doing it this way seems to be the fact that you can download core, disconnect from the net and have a bit more security.
Not 100% perfect, but getting better. It boils down to what I said and you commented on about TCP/IP and services.

But, it also gets back to having a hardware wallet and PIN is vulnerable to the $5 wrench. ($6 wrench with inflation)

2208  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Celsius Exchange Data Dump Is a Gift to Crypto Sleuths—and Thieves on: October 17, 2022, 10:46:28 AM
I know we discussed it on another thread here someplace but, it come back to the fact that if you are trading or doing anything really, on a centralized exchange or service like this you are always going to run the risk of something like this happening. Change the facts a bit and it can still happen for a "semi legitimate" reason if the exchange had to go to court for some reason and had to give the information to the court / other side of the lawsuit.

Once it's out there you never know what may be made public.

2209  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet not syncing to blockchain on: October 16, 2022, 02:47:50 PM
Some questions, just to give us more information:

Did it ever work?
If it did, when was the last time and has anything else changed on your system since then?
Are you on 4.3.2?
What OS / hardware?

As others have pointed out it's rare, but also as they said following the instructions and then rebooting the machine can't hurt.

2210  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can i post satoshi posts in other forums here? on: October 16, 2022, 02:31:04 PM
I would just ignore them and not feed the trolls by posting their junk here. The other thing you could do is just link to where they are posting and let anyone here who is motivated go over there and show the users there why that person is a scammer / troll.

Either way, it's probably a waste of time, some people will believe what they want to believe no matter what proof you show them otherwise. Since you said it's a conspiracy forum you probably can't get through their tinfoil hats anyway.....

2211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Get your Bitcoin off any exchange supporting "BSV" (due to insolvency risk) on: October 16, 2022, 01:25:04 PM
And now they are showing no blocks for 16 hours, last one as of this post was Oct 15, 2022, 8:26 PM UTC.
Since it was mentioned earlier in the thread that only 9 nodes at the tip, it could be that a bunch of places were all puling data from the same place that shit the bed.

Or it could be someone trying to force a re-org and others fighting it and due to the massive chain bloat severs are just spinning themselves into oblivion, or it could be bad coding caused an issue. Fun to speculate but until the people running the public block explorers tell us, it's just conjecture.

Either way, it's interesting to watch.

2212  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Get your Bitcoin off any exchange supporting "BSV" (due to insolvency risk) on: October 14, 2022, 11:46:29 AM
The question is how long until we see posts like this about BSV:

...
Dear STEX Trader,

The developers changed the code (fork) of the SUM project. According to the new SUM coin code, all transactions do not exist in the block explorer. The STEX does not support the transition to the new code leading to the loss of blocks. Therefore, in case the SUM coin developers team provide us with the old node that supports all lost blocks then withdrawals on STEX will be enabled. Currently, the communication between us and SUM coin developers team does not bring a positive outcome.

Please note that these actions characterize SUM as an exit scam project. In order to protect our users, we’ve decided to start the delisting procedure and stop any support of SUM coin on STEX.

Project info: www.sumcoin.org

Medium: medium.com/@sumcoinindex

STEX Team

I can see exchanges keeping it on so long as there is trade volume and they are making money. I have said it before and will say it again, that is what exchanges try to do, make money.  As soon as they see a coin as a real threat to that it is tossed.

Even if it was known to be a scam at the beginning they will still list something if they think they can make money on the trading fees.

But, there is a tipping point, if they think they can be really hurt by it, it's tossed like yesterdays trash. After all, once you list a coin the hard work is done, you just have to sit there and take the fees, shutting it off is just about no work at all.

2213  Other / Meta / Re: Top reporters on: October 14, 2022, 11:35:45 AM
Could be wrong but I think in general it's not gotten better, but the spammers have moved to places that a lot of us don't see because we don't frequent those sections.

I also think the reporting 'bots' that Mitchell and others are getting better. As they add more terms to them a lot of the things that may have been up for a longer that would have gotten reported and taken down are now removed before many people even see them.

Add in the fact that many of the older accounts that were popping back up to spam have been nuked / banned it is a bit better here.

2214  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Stratum v2: After 10 Years, The Most Used Bitcoin Mining Software Gets Facelift on: October 13, 2022, 02:44:46 PM
Lets see if it gets any traction in the real world outside of big corporate miners.

I can see it slowly taking over as the manufactures start using it by default, but until you hit that critical mass point I see most people still using V1, I know a lot of people never even update the firmware on their miners unless thy wind up having an issue with something. For the small miners, there really is no advantage to all the additional overhead that it needs. And as with anything, the more features you add to something the more issues you will probably wind up with.

2215  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GrapheneOS BTC donations for Pixel7 on: October 12, 2022, 11:48:46 PM
2 1/2 hours later it's a T-Mobile issue. I figured it was since I could make calls so the OS could talk to the esim. Turns out that if you don't use it for a while you miss updates to the programming and you have to have them refresh it. Important tip for the $10 / month spare phone in a draw thing. And Side Of Burritos drives a Honda Accord, was watching the video you linked to and I see that dashboard every day.

Side note if you are thinking of getting a 7 there are a few discounts / rebates going on depending on where you are located:

There are others you just have to hunt around a bit

2216  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GrapheneOS BTC donations for Pixel7 on: October 12, 2022, 08:07:24 PM
Nope, it's a OnePlus Nord running LineageOS. You could not pay me to use an iPhone.
Oh that's nice, and I didn't know that phone was supproted, but is LineageOS actually doing regular updates or not?
I heard DivestOS os better and it's also based on LineageOS with some improvements.

With that being said I put Graphene on the 4A late yesterday and it seems to be working. Had to jump through a few more hoops then listed here: https://grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-google-play-esim to get my esim working. Once that was good I went to bed, will do more testing later or tomorrow. At 1st use it seems slower then what was there stock, but it's been a while since I used that phone so I may be relating it more to what I have been using now. Threw them a donation since it's the right thing to do.
I am glad you managed to install everything and you got GrapheneOS working.
Make sure to check out their website Usage and FAQ pages for any help, or check out Side Of Burritos on youtube for some tips and tricks, he talked about esim also.
One thing I like about this OS is the fact they are updating everything very fast, much faster than CalyxOS or other alternatives.
For donations, I think they are going to accept Lightning Network soon with their node, but until then mainnet Bitcoin is accepted.

LineageOS has a fairly large amount of supported devices: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ and their nightly builds are always updated: https://download.lineageos.org/dre/changes/

As for GrapheneOS I lied about the esim working, can't get calls in, I can only make outgoing. A physical sim works fine. I think it's a carrier issue, on hold with T-Mobile now. If you never hear from me again you know I died waiting for them to pick up. Watching some Side Of Burritos videos now.

2217  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-06-17] Bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable as BTC price falls on: October 12, 2022, 07:17:56 PM
What loss? If they bought the ASICs / GPUs long enough ago they are paid for many times over. Even if you bought only a year before the merge if you had cheap enough power you were under 300 days for RoI on most ASICs and about the same for GPUs.

If! And for a lot, it's not the case.
So, if we go to Reddit for example you will see that hundreds have bought gear at scalper prices during the spring and those guys will never ever achieve ROI, and there are hundreds and thousands of them, one year ago the hash rate was 700TH/s it peaked at 1Peta, with one 3090 doing around 120Mh/s you still have 2 and a half million that for sure haven't reached the break-even point.
Add to the price the risers, the power supplies, extra fans, a frame, that and that, downtime, cleaning, it adds and adds Tongue

If you bought when cards were at their highest with less then 6 months left on mining then you got what you deserved. Sorry, but you can't fix stupid.

Last spring (2021), I bought a couple of 2080Ti, mined with them for a YEAR and sold them this spring (2022) for close to 2x what I paid. There is no way the person who bought them could ever come close to making money.

I just about broke even mining in the year I had them and had I kept them would have been a few hundred dollars ahead when mining ended. So, it was definitely possible.

2218  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is anyone working in a "pruned download"? on: October 12, 2022, 07:01:11 PM
Rant.....
I would really like to see the entire concept of the pruned node removed. Either run a node or don't. There seem to be more and more people who want to have a node running on drives that don't have enough space that wind up going the pruned node route and then wonder why they can't import a private key or are having some other issue that comes back to the fact that you can't go back to a full node without re-downloading everything. Spinning 1TB drives are under $40.00 as are 512GB SSD it's no longer that big a deal.
...end rant

2219  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GrapheneOS BTC donations for Pixel7 on: October 12, 2022, 02:32:27 PM
Don't want to derail this thread, but for me QC is the issue. Took me 2 returns before I got a 4a that didn't have screen issues and the 6 came new in a box with a battery showing a problem. There is NO way they did any checking on them before shipment. Not saying other brands don't have issues, but lets just say the phone I have now is not a Pixel.....
It's true that Pixel 6 had issues with battery and stupid slow charger, but they fixed most of this things with software update in Android13, and from early reports Pixel 7 battery is much much better.
You probably use iPhone now like most of the people and maybe it works better for you with better battery, but it's total privacy nightmare and it's closed source, so no thank you.  Tongue

Nope, it's a OnePlus Nord running LineageOS. You could not pay me to use an iPhone. OK, well if you give me enough I might use one, but I would still carry an Android device :-)
The battery was not fixable in software, 100% just a bad battery, it would heat up to the point of the phone shutting down even with a 2 amp charger. Was just a bad battery out of the box, it happens, but there was no way they tested it before shipping.

With that being said I put Graphene on the 4A late yesterday and it seems to be working. 2220  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-06-17] Bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable as BTC price falls on: October 12, 2022, 12:24:05 PM
@DaveF. However, will those miners of Ethereum shutdown easily and accept the loss? They can continue to mine other coins like Ethereum Classic and the Ethereum proof of work chain which is also presently being supported by exchanges. Binance has funded a new mining pool for ETHW to continue support for the miners.

What loss? If they bought the ASICs / GPUs long enough ago they are paid for many times over. Even if you bought only a year before the merge if you had cheap enough power you were under 300 days for RoI on most ASICs and about the same for GPUs.
GPUs can and are still being sold off,  and as of now it looks to be more profitable running current or 1 gen out SHA ASICs then GPUs.

As for the other coins that can be mined with the ETH ASICs, it's a tough call. If you RoI already on them whatever you sell them off for is profit. Or, you can keep mining at a loss at the moment and hope those coins go up enough.

Businesses for the most part, if they know they can make money mining BTC but *may* make money mining something else but *will* make money selling the ASICs are going to sell the ASICs and mine BTC. That's just good business.
