1601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core gets wrong bitcoin.conf file on: January 21, 2023, 02:44:46 PM
In addition to what @LoyceV said I would check permissions. Since you said you copied it from another machine to another can this one read & write to those files & folders.

Also, what does the debug.log file say? Any can't read or writes to anyplace?

And, I know it's stupid but I have done it did you verify the <external_hdd> is the same mount name in both. Spent way too much time diagnosing that one once.

1602  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: An honest answer on mining with solar on: January 21, 2023, 02:14:11 PM
Solar or not, forget about mining.

The only situation where it makes sense to mine crypto if you have free or near free electricity. If you can't have this, then go buy bitcoin with the money you are going to spend on hardware. It will be a much better investment.

Doing maintenance of the hw, keeping the track of electricity prices, replacing the broken miners, updating the software... You are going to spend your time on this crap and you will probably make less money than who only bought and held coins.

Is your time really that worthless?

You can also then get rid of working on classic cars. Hunting down cool collectables (be it crypto or other) and lots of other things that really have probability to loose you more in time and money they they will ever generate. But, if you enjoy doing it, want to learn how to do it and understand the process then there is no reason not to do it.

The OP asked a question, will it be profitable. The answer is really probably not. The question was not if they should do it or not.

Back in the early 2000s over a few years a neighbor of my parents rebuilt a 1980s Ferrari 308. For the cost of parts and the 1000s of hours of labor he really could have gotten a part time job stocking shelves at minim wage at the local supermarket and BOUGHT a fully restored one AND had more money and free time. But he would not have had nearly as much fun. He sold it at a loss based on money and time invested and went out and started doing another one......

1603  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Genesis allegedlly prepares for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on: January 20, 2023, 09:28:39 PM
The whole cycle of leverage in the crypto market with the participation of Genesis:

It is noteworthy that the FUD around Genesis does not subside, and Bitcoin does not react at all to this, on the contrary, demonstrating abnormal growth.

Hope you don't mind I replaced the image you had with a slightly different one. Still gives the same information.

This kind of crap is what brought BTC into existence. People moving money that did not exist and loaning money that did not exist so people could invest in things that should not have been invested in.
Then the economy imploded.
<sigh>

I guess in the end people will keep doing what they have been doing. Be it with fiat / crypto or whatever.

Peaches (Yes I know it's a strippers name and to make it worse it's a male cat) approves your post

Are they converting to fiat / what are they doing with the donations to convert them to things they need?

Who has / controls the private keys do they understand the security implications or are you now executive VP in charge of Crypto handling. Been there, done that on my end and finally had to show someone else the ropes so to speak.

1605  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [FUN]Heatbit Is the First Space Heater That Mines Bitcoin on: January 20, 2023, 02:41:38 PM
It is nonsense.

The ant miner L3+. can indirectly mine BTC at nicehash.

cost is about $250 on ebay.

it earns 1.50  a day

it burns 750 watts.

that is 18 kwatts a day.

it can be made quiet.

I do that and IIRC so do you and a bunch of others. But they are ugly, have wires everywhere and so on.

Thinking you are going to make a profit mining with a device like this is beyond ridiculous.
Thinking that you are going to pay a bit less to run a space heater is an acceptable answer.

If you are a gadget geek, spending a bunch of money on something like this is not out of the realm of what you do.

With all due respect to voltagegoat.com, who has products I love. Does anyone really need a $500 nixie tube bitcoin price ticker? A $20 used amazon echo 5 will do more, use less power and so on.
It's just not as cool. Same with this, it's a stupid expensive, probably difficult to configure space heater. But it mines crypto, so there is a market for it.

I was personally impacted by all 4 of the issues agrawas mentioned but I would never accept a single sat from cygan, however I would give him 100% of my merit, if I had to give, for his generosity in this case. And to be clear I fully understand the reasoning behind why cygan is offering his own personal crypto to those affected, what I don't understand is why members would accept it.

Because they might need it? If part of your needed income was buying / selling / trading collectables and all of a sudden a lot of it's value was wiped out it might be causing a bit of difficulty.
It's not just the amount of the BTC on the card, it is also the amount that was paid as a premium because it was a collectable. They are not getting the extra back, so getting something back could make a difference.
AND, with FTX along with all the other things that happened in the last few months even people who would not normally need it, may need it now.

And so on.

Or, and this is a respectable answer too, because he offered. Some people may not have gone out and asked for the BTC, but since he offered they will take it.
Fine line, but I can see some people thinking that way.

Just to be open, I took a hit but I have been doing this long enough and knew the risks of getting funded things from people so in my mind it is what it is. Not asking for anything back and just taking my lumps and moving on. But, as I said I can see other people acting differently.

Crypto Conglomerate DCG Suspends Dividends Amid Distress at Genesis Unit
"In response to the current market environment, DCG has been focused on strengthening our balance sheet by reducing operating expenses and preserving liquidity," it told shareholders in a letter Tuesday.

Ok, now that rings alarm bells in my head. There's no good reason for any company to stop paying dividends, unless they are running out of cash (or they're just asshats in the case of Amazon) which seems like what the entire DCG is going through right now.

I'm just waiting for the ironic article to be written on CoinDesk: "DCG declares bankruptcy".

Yes and no. They might be worried about another major downturn and want to have cash on hand to ride it out.
NOT saying that this is what is happening here, but more and more you see businesses hoarding more and more cash *just in case*.

There were a lot of viable business out there that could not survive the 2008 market crash and others that went out during Covid. There were profitable and doing well, but needed that cash to keep flowing. Without that they just did not have the liquidity to keep it going. So now they hoard. There are a bunch of downsides to doing that too.

Once again, not saying that is what is happening here, just that it does happen.

1608  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: NERF antminer s9 hashboard to run 1-5 asic chips ULTRA low power on: January 20, 2023, 01:09:56 PM
My goal is to somehow nerf a antminer s9 harshboard to only use 1-5 asic chips using the standard control board. Anyone know how this could be done?

Firmware ? Any ideas welcome. The goal is to run it off low 5v power supply “solar setup” plug it to ck pool and let it ride . Geckoscience sticks have what 2 asic chips? Do not have the money to buy the gecko. I do have 1 s9 miner with three hashboards and 63 asic chips per board.

Any ideas to help make this happen with what I have please.

You are still going to have to get 12V to the hash boards and the control board not 5V. They are hard wired to convert the 12V from a PCIe plug to the voltage they need.
After that you can pull 2 of the boards, like a lot of us do for converting them into silent space heaters.
Then grab one of the custom firmwares that are out there to shut down most of the chips on the board.

You would also need to figure out fan control, and a few other things, probably not worth the time and effort.

I can't belive it mannnn, how tf they manage to do such sht things, still they have thousends of accusations and yet introduced another website, seems profitable business.

You did see that this thread has been dead for almost 3 years until you decided to post.

And lets review you your 1st post on this forum was about you loosing a phone with $78000 of crypto on it.
Then you went to blame duckdice because you lost your phone and did not have a way of recovering your account.

Perhaps you should stick to traditional banks and casinos, this way you don't have to worry about protecting your money or your accounts. Since it really looks like you can't do it yourself.

1611  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Today is Lightning Network's 7th Birthday on: January 19, 2023, 08:58:19 PM
Huh, I didn't know about that, and it's a fine date for celebrating birthdays. It's been a long enough time to look for some achievements, right?
I remember a time when Bitcoin transactions were very expensive during several periods, so the Lightning Network was a very worthy, even if not user-friendly, consideration. But what about now, when Bitcoin transactions aren't always cheap but are usually not high enough to make a fuss out of it? Did the Lightning Network reach enough people, and is it still relevant, especially considering the trade-off of it being off-chain transactions?
Is it possible to understand how many people use it? I see estimates that vary really wildly, from 100,000 to 80 million people, but all comes from websites I don't know and don't really trust. How big of a thing is it, and is it used primarily for Bitcoin nowadays?

https://1ml.com/ tends to be accepted as a generally accurate view of nodes and amounts on it and such.
As for the use question, it's hard to say since more or less due to the way it operates transactions are more or less anonymous.
So you can't tell if I sent 100 transactions or 100 people sent 1 transaction.

Not to mention the custodial wallets that people may be using so you loose more data there since payments could be from several people all coming from 1 channel.

And yes, the date of the 1st paper with a date works as the birthday.

How the **** did I not see this earlier?

I have not bought any collectibles, but this strikes me as the greatest scam in modern (>2018) Bitcointalk history. You'd have to be a special kind of traitor to self-destruct with +20 green trust.

Because we all walk around with blinders on see the parts of the forum we want to see and reading and responding to posts that are interesting to us.
I even posted in the hardware wallets board to see if a people more interested in that side of BTC so to speak would have any ideas and I got 1 entire reply to the post.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5434824.0

I see this / have seen it in other parts of the board. Years ago, mining hardware maker scams were barely mentioned, if mentioned at all outside the the mining hardware boards.

Unless you have the time and effort to follow every big thing, even big things now and then are going to be missed.

And, lets face it, compared to the exchange implosions and everything else over the last few months this is a rounding error in terms of money.

1614  Economy / Collectibles / Re: FUNDED COLLECTIBLES on: January 19, 2023, 07:27:50 PM
Surprised at the number of people who are still going to collect without changes.
Everybody has their own level of risk tolerance, I thought after getting burned more people would be risk adverse.

Guess we will have to see how everything plays out in the future.

I am going to keep collecting and selling and trading, but I always knew in the back of my mind that this could happen, so I did things with that in mind.

I have spent the last 24 hours searching for the right algorithm and I finally managed to make a 'minimum viable product'. Surprisingly, the hardest part was to figure out how to prepare a message to calculate correct hash for base64 encoding.

Cool. Are you going to open source it or keep it closed?

Would be good if it was setup like the Bitcoin Discussion > Press section.
This way it could be looked at quickly so people could see if things are going to matter to them.

[2023-01-12] Cisco Warns of Critical Vulnerability in EoL Small Business Routers

And the 1st few lines should have a brief description and links to the appropriate information.

This MIGHT get people to at least scan it to see if there is something about a product that they use.
Otherwise it really does stand a good chance of getting buried on page 7 never to be seen.

-Dave

The entire board or just cybersecurity/privacy news kind of threads? I think a sub-board within the Cybersecurity and Privacy board for news, just like the press board within Bitcoin Discussion would be great!

I would actually go the other way that the main board was with things that people could quickly glance at to see if it matters to them and below that a more open discussion. There would probably be some topic that would stay more or less at the top, and I would worry that others that are important / relevant to some people would gut buried unless they were forced into the date / subject order.

Using what I posted above, a discussion about firewall security could go on for pages and pages with people discussing brands and settings and whatever. A big obvious your old Cisco router is now vulnerable may get a few more eyeballs on it.

Just my view. I also think that if people can give a quick glance for 'Cisco' or 'Asus' or whatever it might help.

But also lets be serious, as a group we still can't get not your keys not your coins pounded thought some peoples heads.

Genesis is laying the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing as soon as this week. The company is working toward a restructuring plan and had swapped proposals with its creditors, some of whom had suggested receiving a mix of cash and equity from DCG.

Might not be the worst outcome. Given enough time and effort they might be able to make enough money to cover the losses and pay everyone back.
Also, might be able to work on better negotiations with the people they owe. i.e. we give you 75% now and you walk or we can try to pay you back but we can't guaranty how much of it or any particular time frame.
Enough people might take the buyout that it gives them even more time and money to get things done.

I have see things like this work in other financial things and see it implode impressively. Lets see how this one turns out.

1618  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Total amount of hashes on: January 19, 2023, 12:54:14 AM
Probability and statistics are your friend.

What we can NEVER know, is how many miners spent how much time hashing away never finding a hash that solved a block. Can't even reasonably guess ...

We can't know the actual number but we can come up with a reasonable estimate. The chainwork value is a good estimate and a standard deviation value tells us how good that estimate is.

... I could have 1PH sitting here mining to a private solo pool for a year and never found a bock so nobody outside of me would know it existed. And if it DID find a block you would never know if I had a massive farm or 1 USB stick and just got really really lucky.

The chainwork estimate and standard deviation values account for those possibilities.

The next step would have to be what a 'reasonable estimate' is for the hashpower that is out there that we don't know about.
I really think it's a lot more then people think OR can be proven. But, I [wait for it] can't prove it.

We know about the big pools, we know about the small pools, we know about the occasional unknown block that pops up.

Most people think that the number of people solo mining to pools they setup themselves is small as in dozens at most. I think it's way higher then that. But we never see them because the "paranoid tinfoil hat brigade" that does not trust mining pools and thinks they can do better themselves because all the pools are out to get you are a lot more common then we see here.

But, we will never see them get a block or even know they exist because their crap setups could never find a block even with all the hash in the world. But they are doing it themselves because they know better. You see these people pop up in the hardware and pool board now and then.

In terms of BTC itself they really do not matter, but and I guess we will have to disagree here, saying that you can use stats to find them is not a realistic thing because they are hashing to find a block but they never will and cannot and there is no way to even know they exist.

I can take you to a data center in NY where someone is paying probably close to $1k a month to run a bunch of S19 that mine to his super special custom coded pool that is going to get a block real soon now.......

I remember seeing the post from that user and I did have some reservations about it at the time as it was from a newbie.

I found it odd especially as the number of forum members jumped on to participate without asking any questions. In the end we have to wait to see what happens on or around 24th January when he claims he will pay the money.

One of his alts that we don't know about will win. What else did you think was going to happen. Trying to build trust and / or merit.

That do it a few times and people see him paying out gets some trust and / or merit then the scamming begins.

Or is that to cynical?
