1581  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core gets wrong bitcoin.conf file on: January 25, 2023, 02:14:46 PM
And make sure the datadir and wallet dir and all the files have 0777 (full user-group-other) permissions.
This is bad advice: it's good practice to give files as few permissions as necessary. Giving all users on a multi user system full access to your wallet is a terrible idea. Also, non-executable files shouldn't have an executable flag.

Beyond that, if you have to do it to make things work something else is terribly wrong with either the application or system configuration.
This is in general, not just related to core.

I have had sysadmins over the years do things like that to get things to work instead of figuring out why they were having issues in the 1st place.

Why should I burn money for you guys? tell me that. Will you refund me the cost after? (I cant even see my userID here lol, please tell me where is it)
Nonetheless, it ain't about me needing to prove anything, it is about people making false accusations that they need to provide proof.
It disturbs me how all of you guys blame the victim (me).

You don't need to burn anything. Send a specific amount to yourself.
This is the URL to your forum account https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3363504 So, u=3363504 is your user ID and it can be accepted if you can send 3504 satoshis to your own address. so there is no harm to you.

You heard about gas fees? (might be that they do not apply, although for it to be confirmed on the chain it requires gas afaik)
But Ill give in.
Only need to know, this is the address right? bc1q8vyk2v9mremunlt0yjrj2pzmv40zlqjqmfrcwz
I mean the one that received 10 BTC, so then you are happy if I send 3504 sat to that?

FROM that address, not TO that address. Anyone can send money to an address only the owner can send FROM it.
The mempool is fairly empty at the moment so it would cost you about $0.10 to send something to that address at 1sat / vb and another $0.10 to send it back out.

And it's called the fee not 'gas' gas is for Ethereum not BTC.

1583  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Another Exchange that could Bite the Dust, crypto.com on: January 25, 2023, 03:40:58 AM
They are one of the few that I would not worry about.
Not saying then they are any better as a place to park money then any other exchange, but they are owned by Foris DAX Asia, who is Singapore based.

And to be blunt Singapore does not mess around with criminals, if they mess this up they are going to more then likely not like the outcome vs. a lot of other people who are running around free after posting bail.

Just my opinion, not financial advice.

What is advice....not your keys, not your coins.

1584  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Looks like a scam - gekkoscience.org on: January 25, 2023, 03:25:45 AM
Charles-Tim, it's not likely a scam it's guaranteed to be a scam. I run GekkoScience, have since we started in 2013, and I have no idea who's running the linked site. It is 100% a scam.

Reach out to namecheap:

https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9196/5/how-and-where-can-i-file-abuse-complaints/
Registrar Abuse Contact Email: abuse@namecheap.com
Registrar Abuse Contact Phone: +1.6613102107

They probably won't do anything since most crypto scams exist forever on their platform, but you never know at times they do take down sites but it's rare.

You can also report the domain to https://thenew.org/report-abuse/ since you I assume have some form of trademark / copyright on gekkoscience

So they can dump it all and crash the market and get about 1BTC out.
Without knowing the magic numbers of how much they really have and how much they owe it really does not matter since people can't withdraw anyway......

Would anyone want to invest in Dave's itchy left testicle coin? Oh, wait I scratched the itch guess the coin is worthless now.
That is what all these shitcoins and tokens are. But you can't get people to see it.

1586  Economy / Economics / Re: Is renting an inevitable waste of money? on: January 24, 2023, 06:07:56 PM
It's a big it depends. Are you handy enough to fix things at a place you own or is every little thing going to require you calling in a repair person?
How secure is the area in terms of home prices. In *general* home prices will keep going up. But you can ALWAYS point to areas some large some small that were hit hard for one reason or another in a real estate downturn that DECADES later are still below value.

What about selling it if you have to change jobs and so on.

The standard reaction is yes, get a house don't rent.
Then you see people who are just walking away form a home for various reasons destroying their credit and finances for years, when renting would have obviously been the better option from the beginning.

So as I stared with, it's a big it depends.

1587  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [List] Gift cards providers on: January 24, 2023, 05:55:34 PM
Found these two new services in Binance pay merchants directory: https://pay.binance.com/en/merchant-stores

- Egycards (based in Egypt).
- and topup-balance.com
Looks like there are a few more gift card providers in the above directory:
Note: My post shouldn't be taken as a vouch!

Addn.io seems to be done for, their trustpilot page is full of complaints.
The same can also be said for "Gyft" and "CardCash [except for the very last review]".

Gyft is and always has been 100% owned by First Data https://www.gyft.com/about-us/
Not a company that is going to scam. They do have a fair amount of people who don't like them. Usually seedy merchants that they kicked off their platform.
They then go out and badmouth First Data and all their companies. Seen it with my own eyes.

OTOH, since we are all are pro BTC, do we really want to be dealing with a credit card processor to get our gift cards.

I'll leave that discussion up for others to take up.

Now, onto the subject that I came here for. Be aware that bitrefill is a bit broken. They are charging a bit more for some cards then face value. i.e. $20 dunkin' card is $20.25
Keep your eyes open if you order something just to make sure it's not more then a few cents.

1588  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Are hardware wallets really safe? And so is Bip39? Opinions about Ledger? on: January 24, 2023, 05:37:11 PM
I'm not sure you need a hardware wallet in this situation, especially if you are planning to destroy it after you have generated the seed phrasease.

And how exactly can you securely destroy a hardware wallet? That is what I have always wondered. It's not like there are screws you can just take off and then extract the NAND flash memory/storage from the device...

A determined hacker could take a damaged HW to a forensics service so a sledgehammer will not help here.

Will it blend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rofgMueCOqo

But seriously, a few minutes with a pair of pliers will do enough damage to it to render it useless and impossible to recover.
Which does bring up the interesting point of all the new HW wallets that are coming out in metal cases. Need the big self destruct button just in case.

As we keep discussing they are all vulnerable to the $5 wrench attack so keeping knowledge of your finances secure is always important.
EVEN TO PEOPLE YOU THINK YOU TRUST. Would you really want someone like Yogg to know where you live and that you had funds?

1589  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I have gotten used to using bitcoin for payment but. .. on: January 24, 2023, 04:55:24 PM
The word is inertia. I remember back in the day when food stores did not take credit cards, just cash and check.
I also remember when a lot of businesses did not take CC in general.
Over time the number grew and then over a couple of years it snowballed into everyone taking credit cards.

But remember, we are talking DECADES of time. At the current time that BTC has been in existence considering the fight banks & governments are putting up against it, I think the acceptance level is fairly good.

1590  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} on: January 24, 2023, 02:15:13 PM
That's true. But Coinomi doesn't mention their wallet perform SPV and Coinomi isn't designed with privacy in mind, while Unstoppable wallet does.

On the flip side you can easily, for BTC, have Coinomi use your own electrumx server instead of theirs.
Everything is a bit of give and take.

I will still, keep saying this although others might disagree. ANY wallet on your phone is neither secure or private. Unless you are using a custom Android build that shuts down all the phone home stuff.
Since you can't do that at all with an iPhone, it's pointless to even think that anything you do on one cannot be monitored.

1591  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Perdida de Th/s en el Pool on: January 24, 2023, 01:16:51 PM
And how much up and down 1%? 10%? 50%?

There is going to be a fair amount of variation because there is an amount of luck involved. So long as over a long period (couple of days) the average is about where it should be you are fine. If you are checking minute to minute there can be some big swings.

Most (All?) pools give you that number.

Also, what miner are you using?

1592  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hits 500 GB size hard disk data on: January 23, 2023, 12:59:06 PM
I know microSD is just example of storage with big capacity, but average microSD have poor I/O speed which hardly suitable to store/manage Blockchain data and other file (e.g. UTXO index).
I haven't tested it, but I expect that exchanging my HDD for a high-end micro SD card wouldn't make it any slower.

If we're talking about high-end microSD, it's random read/write speed could surpass HDD sometimes. But i was talking about average microSD which has quite lower price per GB.

It will depend on the setup though: I currenly only have my blocks directory on the HDD, not chainstate.

Setup which consist SSD and HDD is fairly common, but combination of SSD and microSD is very unusual (outside Raspberry Pi).

I can see it happening more and more on budget setups. There are a lot of laptops and PCs out there on the used market with smaller SSDs. Remember 6 years ago the 6th gen Intel processors were new and a lot of machines were coming with 256gb SSDs. Small by today's standards but faster then spinning drives and more then enough for an office PC. Around here they are all over the used market for under $200 with a warranty from a store and under $100 on the Craigslist / Facebook marketplace from people.

The SSD is not going to be big enough for the blockchain. BUT, just about all of them have SD slots. So any 1TB microSD with an adapter to regular size and you are done.
Yes it's close to $100 to get a 1TB card vs. $50 to replace the drive but not everyone is comfortable taking apart a PC. Sliding an SD card into a slot it easy....

Don't know if there are going to be a lot of people doing it. But once again for ~$250 a full node with room to grow. And it's a useful PC when you want to upgrade to something else.

1593  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} on: January 23, 2023, 02:42:45 AM
I was just guessing that could be the reason. Since you still have it installed on your phone, can you try with Tron or USDT over Tron? I tested that a few moths ago when I downloaded the wallet, but I don't remember if there was an error message like on your end or if I just couldn't find those assets listed.

Same error as doge, can't add with 12 word wallet.

AtomicDEX.io might be one more alternative you can use for dogecoin, it also supports Bitcoin and other shitcoins, and you can even exchange coins if there is enough volume.
I don't like that for Bitcoin they are still using old style addresses starting with 1, and wallet is still in beta phase, but it works fine.
Probably best option for multicoin wallet is combination with some hardware wallets, but I saw other wallet called Stack also supports doge.

There are a couple of options for multicoin wallets, each have their own good and bad things. Although I don't like them in general, for a few dollars of coins they
work well enough. As I said, storing real amounts in a hot wallet is just asking for trouble. I tried atomicDEX.io it did work with no issues, didn't do something I needed, don't remember what. But no problems with it not working.

Other than being closed source, I don't know last time Coinomi developers updated their desktop wallet, not sure if similar situation is with their mobile app.

March of 2022.

1594  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New CV1835 Control Board on Antminer S19 XP on: January 22, 2023, 10:24:37 PM
I'm going with cost. Every dollar they save in making the boards is another dollar in their pocket. And, odds are they are not making them. The put out a RFQ for a board with whatever specifications they are looking for and then go with the cheapest bid. Would not be surprised if the cost of tweaking their code to work with the new board is included in the quote.

No different then me having 3 of the exact same model Dell monitors in my office that were made by different companies and Dell just put their logo on it.
Dell don't care since the specs are all the same, or at least supposed to be the same you can see a difference but according to the website it's the same.

Home routers are also the same a lot of the time. Rev A Rev B Rev D and so on. Take them apart and they look nothing alike. But they are all the same model number and look the same on the outside.

1595  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the core dev team plan to fight Quantum computers? on: January 22, 2023, 02:43:31 PM
I am starting to feel like a "Quantum resistant gems (aka new shitcoins)" will be the new narrative in the upcoming years.
I am sure I have already seen such claims already and there are already shitcoins promising to be impenetrable by (nonexistent) quantum computers.

Makes you wonder how many of the countless times newbie accounts come and ask the same QC question they are really just trying to get their foot in the door so to speak to shill their QC resistant shitcoin.

Guess all we can do is just slap them down again and again as they pop up. Would be nice if the mods put a sticky that had some basic QC points and every new user that asked about them got nuked. But that's just me.

Humor, there has been a webcomic called questionablecontent.net that has been around for 20 years or so now and all the discussions about it talk about it as QC. Better entertainment then the same points that keep coming up here about quantum computing.....

I was trying to replace my current multicoin wallet with it a while ago and kept running into issues.
Which multicoin wallet are you currently using? Just for the record.

Maybe Dogecoin isn't even supported yet.
Someone asked if DOGE was supported by Unstoppable two years ago, and according to reddit it wasn't at the time. And looking at your picture, I don't see a enable/disable switch next to DOGE. The same type of switch that is visible for DOLA, DORA, and the other alts there.

I am using Coinomi [yes I know all the issues with it but at the moment even with the increase in crypto prices over the last week it has a whopping $202 in it] the time and effort and everything else to either use separate wallets for all the coins is just not worth it for the amounts involved in a hot insecure wallet. Because ANY wallet on a phone is hot and not at all secure.

As for it not being supported, if that is the case then don't display the option to add it. I can see that being an issue as people try different things to see if they can get it to work before they give up and search for help so now they have created a bunch of wallets with a bunch of seeds for no reason.

OgNasty's not gonna scam anyone.

Agree he is going nowhere. But I would still want to keep it as 2 of 3 multisig as discussed earlier in the thread.

Even if everyone 100% trusts everyone else involved it still makes it a bit more secure and shows people it can be done so they can do the same things for the security of their funds.

all i want is for the whole thing to be settled by yogg!

I really don't think that is ever going to happen. Seems to be the kind of person that even if he DID win the lottery and had all the money to pay people back would still just walk away.

I was trying to replace my current multicoin wallet with it a while ago and kept running into issues.
1) Some issues with adding alts:

But it does not say what to use. Just that this one does not work.

2) If there is a way, I could not find it to have more then 1 account per coin. Might just be a Dave thing but I have BTC1 and BTC 2 and BTC 3 along with LTC 1 and LTC 2 and so on all on my phone. All small amounts since it's a hot wallet but it helps with the disaster I call accounting. (mining goes here, raffles go there, other sales go someplace else and so on)

3) As others have mentioned it can be slow.

Not a bad wallet if it works for you, but since it did not work for me I passed. But in the little time I had it that is what I noticed. I just tried again when I saw this post and the screen shots for the can't add just came from now so it's still an issue.

1599  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hits 500 GB size hard disk data on: January 22, 2023, 02:48:44 AM
~snip~
In my calculations, between Q2 and Q3 this year, the size of the block will reach 500 GB of data on my hard disk. what yours tought?.

Some people have more than that in just their Google Photos account.

It's really incredible to think that the entire history of all Bitcoin transactions from 2009 to today can fit in half a terabyte.

This is a really well done job by the Bitcoin devs. Really good job.

And the processing speed of the nodes has been constantly going up, it's way faster than what it used to be.

And new 1TB 1TB SSD NVMe PCIe are at $50 or less so there is not even an appreciable cost to putting your OS and your node on one.
Just bought a used 7th gen Dell laptop from Craigslist for $65, had a 4GB stick of RAM sitting around to bring it to 8GB and bought one of those drives.
So for under $125 another full node with lightning and a block explorer and a few other things is made.

1600  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: The Collectibles Issue on: January 21, 2023, 10:14:21 PM
What a lot of people are trying to come up with is a way that still allows for resale / trade.

Having me put the private key & hologram on the coin is no better then having the maker do it. You are just trusting a different person. And as they change hands over the years getting back to the person who made it, if it was not the original coin maker is going to be just about impossible.

NFC / RFID with a bit of 'intelligence' is an option that has been kicked around, but that can drive the cost way up.

Still a bit of a work in progress.
