1421  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [LIST] Bitcoin Seed Backup Tools on: February 28, 2023, 05:56:23 PM
Side comment, but lets leave it as Dave knows for some reason....

With the seed plates that use a punch tool, be very carful as to the strength & quality of the tool and the force you are hitting it with as you are holding it.
And perhaps a bit of eye protection in case the punch tool shatters into about 73 billion pieces.

Just saying I'm an out of shape computer nerd so someone a bit stronger may have some experience with this too....

1422  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BTCPayServer adds CoinJoin plugin, but there's a catch on: February 28, 2023, 04:11:49 PM
From the docs it looks like a simple switch to a different coordinator.

From my PoV the other thing is that even though the Wasabi coordinator has gone full monitoring, they do have support.

In theory, it's a it's works or it does not thing.

In reality, we know that there can be dozens of little things that may not work that need to be dealt with now and then deepening on the way someone tweaked their BTCPay server or some other changes they made. Having a 'default' implementation can help troubleshooting.

Beyond that, use a different coordinator.

1423  Economy / Reputation / Re: 'Bitcointalk forum is going downhill because of dkbit98' - CoinPayCard.net SCAM on: February 28, 2023, 01:29:55 PM
@NotATether would you mind (and anyone else who got a card from them too) giving out the 1st 6 digits of the card.

Although *far* from definitive as to where they are, having the BIN / IIN will at least let us know what bank they were using to issue the cards. Might give a bit on insight as to where they were operating from. Not to mention a call to the bank security office might at least slow them down on the next scam. Probably not, but it can't hurt.

Side thought, makes you wonder if there is a good profit center in doing this:

Setup a business. Get a credit card from a company that allows unlimited employee cards that you can set limits on. Charge people for the card (profit), give a crappy exchange rate for the BTC -> fiat load (more profit), then set the limit of the card to that. And take the rewards / cashback that the card offers (even more profit).
Obviously all the KYC would go back the the business, but does that really matter?

1424  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: How do the biggest businesses contribute to open source software (Bitcoin)? on: February 28, 2023, 12:44:20 PM
From a 10 second google search:

https://bitpay.github.io/
https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2021/06/09/ibm-donates-code-improvements-to-open-source-hyperledger/
https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2021/04/07/square-cryptos-new-grant-funds-popular-bitcoin-blockchain-explorer/
https://twitter.com/Ryan_Singer/status/1618989456069099520
https://www.coinbase.com/blog/introducing-coinbase-open-source-fund

Not to mention as others and myself have said a lot of times it's 100% unmentioned donations. For some reason you seem to think large companies should be telling people what they do with their money. I'm sure with a cup of coffee and some time there are 1000s more that are out there but not discussed.

Case in point; BitPay, years ago they were using a library (they did not write it, just a common open source app) that was hacked with the potential to steal users crypto:
https://cyware.com/news/a-bug-in-the-copay-and-bitpay-apps-enables-a-hacker-to-steal-bitcoins-cdf92aba
Do you think businesses want to deal with that kind of thing.
It was a big deal because it WAS BitPay who released it, if if was the DaveF app, it would have been a footnote about it. But because it was a major company who released it, a shit-storm occurred.

1425  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo mining .vs Pool (S19j Pro @ home) on: February 28, 2023, 12:11:39 PM
Early morning math so it might be a bit off. With the current difficulty on AVERAGE with 100 TH you should find a block in about 58 years as you said.
But difficulty keeps going up so that  number keeps going up.
It is however luck based. So you may find one tomorrow or you may never find one.

1426  Other / Archival / Re: Bitcointalk, we have a new member of the forum administration on: February 27, 2023, 03:29:05 PM
...and we can clearly see negative feedback received in his profile...

But, there are still large parts of this forum that don't display the trust info. If not a full on ban then at least a signature ban should be given.
The other side is as I have said, it's an internet forum not your mom, if you trust without checking you are going to get burned sooner or later.

1427  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [FLAG] Against CoinPayCard.net (u=3521103) on: February 27, 2023, 12:59:16 PM
This outcome isn't surprising for me. Good thing i wasn't tempted with their service since they didn't bother offer virtual credit card. Anyway flag is supported and i also left negative trust to their account.

P.S. I wonder whether any online account which connected to their debit card could get ban/suspend since now we know CoinPayCard.net is very probable exit scam.

If they do, I'll probably be the first one... that is if they even have the time to even attend to their website  Cheesy

I just found that Ezzocard is selling "Violet" worldwide VISA prepaid cards, so these are a good alternative for people who got screwed by this site. Never had a problem with them.

Flag supported. Sorry about you loosing the money.

If it's just prepaid that you want there are other places selling them too.

Also, and everyone keep this in mind. Even though there is no KYC they are not 'anonymous' do you really think a place doing this is going to not reveal their records to the authorities if they show up with a warrant? They know where you shopped and from there it's just another breadcrumb on the trail to you.

1428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: nft censorship and what power the programmer has on the network! on: February 27, 2023, 12:20:42 PM
IIRC Luke was also the one who had his node set not to accept transactions from some gambling sites (could have been somebody else) this is no different.
Your node, your choice. Miners have always also had the ability to ignore whatever transactions they wanted to and make blocks the way they want.

This is no different.

FYI we are also talking about this guy: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5432665.0

So at a guess he is trying to get back some of his credibility by making changes his way.

Makes you wonder how much of this is out there. Not the miner or 2 running in an office. But a more than a dozen or so that are shown in the picture.

Operations like this are, realistically, probably far and few between. It takes a significant amount of funds to acquire dozens of miners and a significant amount of trust to leave them somewhere where they can be discovered and a) stolen or b)traced back to you, causing you to lose your job. Miners are like gold - thieves will break into buildings just to steal them. I can't imagine leaving a dozen miners somewhere that is relatively open to anyone to discover and take.

Guess it really depends on where you are and what you do and how much power the facility uses.
There are a lot of places out there that have been remodeled and reworked and reconfigured so many times that the amount of dead space is staggering.
That is actually the easy part. If they are not already pulling a ton of power it's more difficult to hide the bump in usage.
Then you have to acquire the miners and the internet.

I can think of at least 2 locations that we do IT support for that the maintenance people could probably get away with it, but they would have to come up with the money for the miners.

Here is where you have to wonder if there are people who go after them and just pay them off. If you have the miners and the major cost is power, if you could setup the miners and generate $2000 a month with the free power and then give the workers $1000 a month to keep them 'off the radar' of the owners / management the math would work. EXCEPT for the criminal nature of what you are doing. Just taking that off the table and doing this purely from a financial perspective.

1430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: have found my wallet from 2014 on: February 25, 2023, 10:03:34 PM
Obligatory comment. There are scammers everywhere so be very careful of what you do and what advice you take. Don't send your wallet file out to others.

Also, make a backup before you do anything. Just in case, it's an older drive that already gave you issues you don't want it to stop working again and take the wallet (And your pictures) with it.

Attempting to jog your memory: Did you have any alt coins back then? 2014 was during their boom, could you have used the same password between coins? Could you have messed up and used your alt coin password to secure your BTC wallet?

From what I can see and remember it looks like a corrupted database.

Did it crash and reboot that you know of?
And do you have a backup?

Reach out to the Umbrel telegram group there might be a way to rebuild but I usually just wipe and restart.
Don't know if you have any funds in there so that may change the way you deal with this.

1432  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Blockchain reorganization attack on: February 25, 2023, 04:40:03 PM
The explanation listed here as reorganization attack does not require 51%? I don't understand.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Irreversible_Transactions#Blockchain_reorganization_attack

In *theory* the same way in theory I can go out to the local 7-11 buy 3 lottery tickets and hit the jackpot on all of them.

ANYONE can get insanely lucky and find a block with not a lot of hashpower. IF you have ignored the previous block you can then broadcast your own in it's place. BUT all the other nodes have already SEEN the block you ignored so they will not accept yours. You then have to get insanely lucky a 2nd time to find a 2nd block that you would build on top of the other one you found and broadcast that. And do all of that BEFORE some other mining pool found a block on top of the proper chain.

You might be able to do it with less then the accepted amount of hashpower needed. You would be better off buying lottery tickets.

somehow i can't connect to my lightning node since a few days. when i click on the ln icon in the umbrel webif a new tab window opens as usual but the ln node can't be opened or loaded.
the website tries to build up but nothing happens...

Basic diagnostics that I know you know but....

Did you reboot the Umbrel node?
Try a different browser?

Other then that how is the node behaving?

Remember, Umbrel puts everything into docker containers more or less. One of them could just be having an issue.

1434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gary Gensler's SEC sues Crypto Influncers and posts on his Twitter as propaganda on: February 25, 2023, 12:25:23 PM
This is nothing new. Years ago there were celebrities promoting pump and dump stock scams who got slapped down bey the SEC hard. Then you have the people promoting gold & precious metals who got slapped down hard. The standards and laws and wording of what you have to tell people about in terms of risks and holdings have been settled law for decades. Just because it's new people with a new medium of communication about a new thing does not make it any different.

If you take advice from somebody who just posts videos on youtube or posts on other social media places you are an idiot.
If you are promoting these things without putting in a basic disclaimer about certain things you are an idiot.

1435  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: No debits from the ledger possible. Who can help? on: February 25, 2023, 12:15:05 AM
What are the system specs? RAM? CPU? and so on. Are you running anything else that could be grabbing system resources?

Probably not the problem but any 1 thing that is limiting can bring some other things to a crawl.

Figure it's worth verifying that before we all go down the rabbit hole of figuring out what else it may be

Makes you wonder how much of this is out there.

Far too many think that they can mine with free electricity. Just the electricity is actually not for free. Most of them are probably at work. Some also in their rented places.
I remember there were even nuclear scientists caught mining bitcoin at work, many years ago. I thought that by now people got smarter, but no, I see they're just greedier.

I know I mentioned it the other day but with rented places I see it happening more and more because landlords are getting greedier and tenants are getting more snarky about power.
At least around here a lot of rental spaces had a separate meter for each office / tenant. You paid you bill and that was that. But more places are now seeing electric as a profit center and charging people if you use it or don't. So they use it. No it's not free but if your bill went from between $75 to $90 paying direct and now it's $180 fixed then yeah you are going to say f--k it and use more power. *The $75 to $90 was power use, not the full cost of the account & other charges. Same now, the billing is different but its close to 2x the power charge + the "admin fee" and so on....

Plenty of older buildings out there with power and ducting going who knows were as things were moved and reconstituted and changed over years and years of needing to have different things configured in different spaces.

1438  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Montana Senate unanimously approves the 'Right to Mine' Bitcoin bill. on: February 24, 2023, 08:14:31 PM
Which would matter if they had decent electric rates.

They are good but not great. Plenty of better places to mine, UNLESS they get subsidized from the government or power company.

That really is the catch in the end. No matter if the laws help you or not, businesses have to follow the money and an average industrial rate of $0.075 per KWH is middle of the road at best.

There is a fair amount of BTC in their node. But considering the number of users that they have it's probably not that much per.
Add in a few people with a lot in there and it drops even more.

Lets see how it winds down over the next few weeks.
And how they handle the people who screwed up and left funds there after the official shutdown.

Wow, thanks for clarifying, I could have never imagined something like this was possible and actually happened. I didn't know RSA algo was banned or under export restrictions in the 1990ies in the US.  Shocked

Lots of things like that in terms of encryption were and still are banned for export. From what I have seen it's really not something they go after you for, but if you are being charged with a bunch of other crimes that goes with it too.

When they started to craft the law things looked a lot different from the internet / tech world standpoint then when it passed, and the way the world is today it's totally pointless.
