1441  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin node connection shuts down: BlueWallet users urged to withdraw funds on: February 24, 2023, 12:52:28 PM
It's bad in the fact that it was a somewhat easy to use LN wallet.

It's good for the fact that falls into the not your keys not your coins so this makes people more responsible for their own funds. And I sure it takes pressure off of the BlueWallet developers for keeping other peoples money safe. And managing channels and everything else.

Would like to see a pop up in the wallet next time I open it about this so we know they are not just posting about it online where people may or may not ever see it.

1442  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2023-02-22] Bitcoin Core Developer Marco Falke Steps Down From Maintainer Role on: February 24, 2023, 12:19:02 PM
Or another way to put it....
Another developer has filled out his CV as best as he can doing this and is now looking to move to a job that is going to pay him mid 6 figures for just showing up to work.
You reach a point in your life when you want the steady 9 to 5 with benefits and everything else. It's tough to keep moving along a path like this knowing that your benefactors ( Okcoin  and Paradigm ) can stop supporting you and there is nothing you can do about it.

-Dave

Wow that is a very realistic and depressive way to put it. But maybe the benefits outweigh the risks depending on the subjective perspective of said developer on how much money he needs to live a good life, even if they throw him out of the boat?

He would have to take a large gamble that he will be kept on for at least a good 5-10 years to get enough money together to live how he wants (but not considerably rich) until old age takes him?

After earning that much money, anything else becomes unnecessary unless you have dreams of becoming a centi-millionaire by age 70.

Taking a bit of a US attitude here, since I can't speak for the rest of the world. it's not just the money. Want to get a mortgage self employed people find it more difficult to get one then people with a regular job. Even if they make more working for themselves. Same with trying to get other forms of finance, even credit cards. Sometimes it's just nice knowing you are working in an environment where you can take a couple of weeks of for something and there are other developers / programmers on task to keep things going. When working on something like BTC although I can't be certain I can see it being more of a constant non stop thing that does burn you out.

I agree with Charles-Tim. Do a multi sig with one in your home, one is with you, one is someplace else and another is in yes another place.
Pick the amount you want to have and the amount you want to need to have to restore to move the coins.

Might not be as convenient but so be it.

1446  Economy / Reputation / Re: 'Bitcointalk forum is going downhill because of dkbit98' - CoinPayCard.net on: February 23, 2023, 11:59:35 AM
Not trying to defend them or anything, but I want to write about my experience with this issue.

I remember in one PM I had with the Coinpaycard forum rep after I experienced this issue (for the 3rd time), he told me that the banking API they use would credit those funds which were loaded, but the website itself has an error and would not show the updated balance.

Each time, this happened when loading the card from the account balance, not when refilling the account balance itself.

One time (and this happened some time around Feb 1st) my balance was showing some really small amount, like $4 or something after I loaded about $60 or $70, but meanwhile my OpenAI payment was successfully processed during this time. I got invoiced, but the card statement was out-of-date.

First two times he actually manually updated my balance to fix the problem. But it is a highly annoying process, and I'm still waiting for him to do it again or to fix the site's API to credit $220 I added a few days ago.

The customer support pages were always unresponsive the whole time - I only got answers via forum PM.

If that is the case then they either need to get a dedicated customer service rep to handle what has to be done or fix the issue. With all the other complaints it's going to becomes a disaster very quickly. If they are doing it properly it should be a quick call to the banks API for balance.

Still not a bunch of people I would want to deal with, due to their attitude and the T&C they have.

1447  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Revisiting Bitcoin ATM Data and Current Growth World Wide on: February 21, 2023, 12:59:57 PM
It's good that you've mentioned the geographic distribution of ATMs and how they are heavily concentrated in North America and particularly in the USA. It's this fact which I find discouraging about ATM adoption: it's happening, and doing so at a pretty good rate, but mainly on a single continent. If this distribution is still the case after 10 years of ATMs spreading, it really shows that they aren't getting significantly more popular in Europe, Eastern countries or in Africa. It's not a big deal, since Bitcoin can be exchanged without ATMs, but it's a big obstacle to viewing the increasing number of ATMs as a sign of global adoption.

Once again, you don't know that. You just know the ones that have been listed on that one very lacking site.

Check out: https://coinatmradar.com/city/92/bitcoin-atm-london-uk/
vs
https://coinatmmap.com/search/51.5072178/-0.1275862/London,%20UK

Shows a different picture between the two.

There are a lot more out there then people talk about here or can find on any one particular site.
This has been discussed here on the forum: https://pouch.ph/bitcoinisland about how BTC is all over the island.
How many BATMs does that site list? Yeah....thought so.

1448  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New HW wallet announced: COLDCARD Q1 on: February 20, 2023, 08:32:54 PM
Drifting with the battery thing for a while. Makes you wonder how low you can go. Would it be possible to design a GOOD hardware wallet with decent screen and everything else.
BUT also have a 'low power' mode. Much like now have a green led for good, a red led for bad and instead of the higher power display use something like an e-ink.

The issue is the security and cpu chips. How low power can you get them. Is it possible to use some funky power setup to even run them off a single AA battery even if you have to throttle them all the way down.
Do you care if it takes 15 seconds to do something if you have to do it and the only power you could get is an old mostly dead battery?

Just pondering out loud here. Did not really think it thought that much.

1449  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: yahoo62278 scammed the forum with his fake donation (part 2) on: February 20, 2023, 07:53:45 PM
What we should do is start a betting pool on how long it is until the troll pops his head up again.
Everyone puts in a fixed amount and the winner is one who picks the time closest to when he comes back.

1/2 goes to Yahoo62278 and 1/2 goes to some charity.

We keep doing it until he stops coming back since we would keep sending Yahoo62278 money it should make the OPs head explode sooner or later.

1450  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Binance's 98% Dominance: Should We Be Worried? on: February 20, 2023, 05:12:04 PM
And there you go assuming they are showing you 'real' numbers. For years exchanges have been been throwing up fake trades / allowing wash trades and all kinds of things to make them look larger then they really are.
So no, I'm not worried. Actually if Binance goes the way of FTX except for a short dump of price as everyone tries to get their funds out it would only help BTC

Not your keys, not your coins.

1451  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: VoIP without KYC? on: February 20, 2023, 03:48:30 PM
It's a bit of a 2 step process BUT

https://silent.link/ so long as you have a device that takes an esim you will get you incoming SMS and calls.

Once you have that you can get a google voice or similar thing to get a phone number for outgoing since they just want to call you / send you a text to verify that you exist.
Not perfect but it does work.

Also, depending where you are a lot of airports these days have 'disposable' local cell phone vending machines. For us diumbasses that forgot to activate international roaming.

1452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Private keys posted on Bitcointalk on: February 20, 2023, 03:37:14 PM
I was curious about that scenario too. That would mean that (eventually) only miners profit from funds sent to addresses with leaked private keys.

After a while it makes you wonder if it could actually work the other way. More and more people stop running the bots since it really does become pointless and they are slowly forgotten about.
Kind of like the way junk fax senders have been disappearing. Just no work / no profit and more and more people pursuing legal action against them. They just left the field.

Yes in theory this is 'free money' just by running a script. But the 1st time they go to consolidate all the dust they have since fees ate the rest do they just walk away.

1st those numbers are wrong and have been proven to be wrong several times.

LibertyX is not and has never been listed as a BATM operator so the count is wrong. https://libertyx.com/a/buy-bitcoin/location-map
Since the site you listed uses 'pay for play' in order to get better listings some other operators will not be listed there too.
Not saying that it's wrong, just very very far from complete.

I can go on, but as soon as you look as those two pieces of info anything else you determine from the site you mentioned becomes wrong.

This next piece of info may be wrong since I have not looked recently, but if you just google BTC ATM Las Vegas you used to get a much larger list then what is listed there.
It's been over a year so I don't know if they have gotten better, but I was was using 2 when traveling and they were never listed on that site.

1454  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Has anyone heard of the crypto paymet processor rocketfuelblockchain.com? on: February 19, 2023, 09:43:27 PM
Spent some time poking around and reading their stock filings and such.
Looks like they are doing more of the back back end kind of thing.

Like one of the links that Husires posted. If you are already using ACI for your credit card and other payments you can now take crpyo payments too since they have the integration with ACI. Same with a few other things I saw with them.

Might not be the worst option for a business if they want to take crypto and get fiat. If you already use one of their partners there does not seem to be much more needed for integration.

...
What did you expect to receive?
...

It's funny I really don't know what I was expecting. The last ones I have been using are similar to the onekey link you posted except they had drill holes in it so can make it look like a bracket. Picked them up a DefCon a few years ago.

I ordered this one for a friend to go with the hardware wallet I made him get and it was more like the ones I posted pictures of. I know they are not as good as the punched titanium ones but since it's the 3rd backup it's good enough. But as I said I really did not expect the logo on it. Don't know why since it's clearly in the picture. As others have said it's common.

<shrug> It's now bolted somewhere in his house logo side in so it just looks like a cheap repair. (which it might be too but that's not the point here....)

1456  Other / Meta / Re: Can we have a true discussion without the sig tail wailing? on: February 19, 2023, 02:32:59 PM
And if you do not want to see them you can set it in your profile under look and layout not to show signatures.

But in the end signatures / tag lines / ads have been on forums forever. Some are more like here where people can pick and choose and apply, others places they are sold through the forum itself.

Not a bit deal IMO.

I never did until this weekend and then I saw them pop up on 2 sites that I use.
They seem to have been around for a while and have some nice features.

Other things seem like they are doing a lot of tracking such as you can see a list of what purchases you made at what merchants and they do allow for subscriptions so a bit more tracking of what you do. Their accepted coins list is long with a standard array of crap coins too.

As I said, up until yesterday never head of them, but since they have been out there for a while I figure someone else has.
Did a quick forum search but did not see them discussed, but I'm on a crap tablet VPNed into my home so thins are REALLY slow.

1458  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Serously You Label Your Metal Seed Storage Plate?? on: February 18, 2023, 07:30:05 PM
It's their way of promoting what they're trying to sell, but I agree with you that the company's logo must be hidden inside instead of being visible.
Why not make a pocket of fabric and thus hide it?

Such tools are not useful because of their moving parts. If the Metal Seed is poured or exposed to high temperatures, they may fail to retain the seeds or some parts of the words may be pivoted. See this photo

- Yamane

Some are good / some are bad: https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/

But the point remains, the one I use looks like nothing more then a metal bracket holding something together. Which technically you can do with these by putting the logo-ed side towards the thing you are bolting it to. But if you are not hiding it, just putting it someplace 'safe' them having a logo is just not a good idea.

1459  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Serously You Label Your Metal Seed Storage Plate?? on: February 18, 2023, 04:42:38 PM
I just noticed that Keystone and a few others actually have their name on the seed plate:

There are others but these were the 1st images I could quickly dig up.

Why don't you just put a layer of bright orange enamel on the outside and print valuable stuff inside on it.

OK, I think it's a bit much to have your logo on something that is supposed to be safe / hidden while holding something valuable.
I just bought one for a friend and saw the logo and was thinking WTF???

Just me or do others agree?

1460  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New HW wallet announced: COLDCARD Q1 on: February 18, 2023, 01:40:41 PM
Imagine using a Gameboy lookalike as your new hardware wallet? And I am not talking about the second generation pocket-sized ones, but the old brick-style consoles. I agree with dkbit98 that removing the cable is a ridiculous move and would force me to look elsewhere if I was looking to buy a hardware wallet. Not because I can't afford to buy a cable somewhere else or don't have spare ones somewhere, but because I expect to get a fully functioning device with everything that goes with it. What's next? You don't get a keyboard, but you can pay extra if you want them to install it for you?

I remember my first purchase in Best Buy in the States some 15 years ago (approx.) Didn't have much money back then, so it was a big thing for me. On top of the price displayed in the store, I also had to pay extra for taxes. Didn't know that's normal in the US back then. On top of that, they added an additional charge of $99. When I asked what that's for, they said their Geek Squad team was kind enough to install the OS on it + drivers for the graphics card, etc. I had a Carol-like fit when I heard that. I said, isn't that standard when you buy a laptop? Were you just going to give it to me with no OS installed, so I can't use if after paying for it? I didn't want to pay for it and asked the salesman to take it back and have their Geek Squad uninstall everything they put on it. After he spoke with his boss, I was told I didn't have to pay the extra $99. Jerk Grin

Sales tax is just the way it is over here. And Best Buy being scummy is just the way best buy is.

As for the cable, I would like them to give you 2 cables. One with the data wires and one without. This way if your batteries are dead you always have a cable around that can power it by plugging it into anything without worry. Minor point but it would be nice.

But, lets face it. All their previous ones did not come with cables either so it's not like anything changed with that. All you got was the unit in a bag.
