I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Pencils ready!

It prevents a bottleneck from happening as the number of transactions increases.
2363  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has the NSA already broken bitcoin? on: May 06, 2015, 04:53:47 AM
If bitcoin is broken, why does it still work?

The NSA has back doors in every encryption since some time in the late 1980s/early 1990s.  PGP 8.0 was the last piece of software that did not contain any institutional back doors (I still have my discs).

point = moot

"Broken" means cracked. If sha  has some sort of NSA devised weakness, in your opinion, and I do think it is likely, then why is the point moot?

The way I see it, if everything is back doored already, why worry about it?  These things don't get exploited willy-nilly, they're last case option sorts of things, otherwise it would be too much in the forefront.

Believe me, if there were a revolution in USA right now and people were organizing and communicating via SHA256 encoded text, suddenly SHA256 would "get cracked".
2364  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Question Re: Block Size and Time on: May 06, 2015, 04:51:37 AM
We keep having discussions about increasing the maximum block size to speed up transactions when we have a congested network. Why don't we just:

Leave block size the same
Decrease block rate to 5m
Decrease block finder reward by half to 12.5

Would this not help solve the same problem, while at the same time speeding up transactions as a whole?

There must be something I'm missing. I know block time affects security but can't we assume the network is secure with the current hash rate?

If you want to do that, make another coin and set it up that way.

What you're missing is this is how Satoshi designed the system to function.  If you want faster tx, try an alt coin.

By increasing the block size, they are attempting to make transactions faster (by not having transactions that should be in the first block have to wait 2-3-4 blocks to be added).

No, that is not what increasing the block size is going to do, you misunderstand the issue.
2365  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo mining lottery on: May 06, 2015, 04:46:28 AM

obviously those figures are useless as the last block is due to be mined at 2040 (ish?)

2140, off by 100 years.

2367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bigger blocks coming in release 0.11 on: May 06, 2015, 04:36:57 AM
Some day in the future, you will need a data center to hold the whole blockchain, but that's still manageable, since by then each bitcoiner will own a data center  Grin

Yup, and this is what a 250 megabyte hard drive looked like in 1979.

30 years later you can fit 250x250 megabytes on something the size of your finger nail.  When the blockchain needs a data center to hold it, a data center will fit on your desktop.
2368  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Change thermal paste with Artic MX-4 for Antminer S5 on: May 05, 2015, 11:55:57 PM

Remember aluminium or copper is way better than thermal paste to transmit heat.

Yes, but how are you going to get aluminum/copper into the microscopic surface divots on a microchip?  That's thermal paste's job.  If people understood the function of thermal paste they wouldn't heap gobs of it onto everything like they're making paper mache.

Exactly. I was telling the OP that this amount of paste goes beyond "microscopic surface divots on a microchip" :
Yup, just one of those dabs is probably enough for the whole board.

What do you use for paste removal?

Thanks

Use 99% rubbing alcohol.

Use coffee filters for cheap lint-free cloth.

Well thanks for sharing, then!  Wink

You don't need great math skills to see swapping old gear for new gear and maintaining your hashrate works.

And, in the long run, makes Bitcoin more environmentally friendly, especially since a huge majority of the electricity poured into the network comes from burning coal.

My pick: -1.76% to -2.00%

If you look at the 9 month display you can see that difficulty is definitely plateauing off as this year progresses.  I wonder if we'll ever see a downward trend for network diff?  These next two years will be interesting, both with the halving coming up and with improvements in hardware efficiency (I think we've see all the significant speed increases we will see for ASICs).

More trends and extensive descriptions can be found in chapter 1.

Single digit numbers should be written out.

Example:

Quote
More trends and extensive descriptions can be found in chapter one.

Only if you are referring to a quantity or value.  Internal document references such as tables, graphs, chapters, appendicies, etc. the number itself is allowable/preferable.  For example, you would not write "chapters nine and 10".

A very good question.  to me this page is what counts.

my stats page is below

Yes, I use the same page (with my address, obviously) for my personal stats, those are very useful, but I haven't found a use for know what the total pool hash rate is, for example.

Fixed some grammar, punctuation, and spelling (US English) without changing the overall structure of your sentences.

This looks like a summary of your entire thesis, correct?  In which case we call this an "Executive Summary".

Avoid contractions and abbreviations in professional writing.

Management Summary

This thesis is the work of the student as part of his study. This thesis is the final assignment and should be viewed as a culmination of the student’s studies, written in order to accomplish his goal of graduating.

The visitors to the Sand Sculpture Festival in Oss were interviewed from April through October, 2014 in order to answer the following question:

In which way can Global Pow Wow make use of online marketing effectively to accomplish the goal of increasing the turnover by selling tickets online?

In order to get a detailed answer to this question, several sub-questions needed to be answered first:
•   What elements does online marketing consists of?
•   What is the target group of the Sand Sculpture Festival?
•   How is the organization currently utilizing online and offline marketing?
•   What does a favorable marketing communication mix for the Sand Sculpture Festival look like?
•   What are the recent trends and developments in the event industry?
•   What kind of marketing methods can be utilized effectively to stimulate the selling of online tickets?

Research Methods

Various methods, including desk research, interviews, observation and polls, were employed in order to find appropriate answers to the sub-questions. This thesis mainly involves desk research, as online marketing is particularly a theoretical subject. Field research was conducted to find a way to apply a well balanced strategy to the correct target group.

Several marketing models were also applied. Firstly, the researcher used the SDP-model to obtain a clear image of the optimal target group as well as determining how to reach it. A second model helped the researcher to shape an effective online vision for the organization where the model is designed to define clear points of action to fulfill the vision. Lastly, the marketing communication mix helped the researcher to define communication activities which can help the organization increase turnover. Detailed results and discussion can be found in chapter 5.

Results

The research gives the reader a clear definition of what online marketing is and how to apply it effectively. Online marketing is a collective term for the management process that aims to anticipate and fulfill the needs and wishes of people by conducting online marketing activities such as operating a good website and making effective use of social media and mobile marketing.

Research shows that the Sand Sculpture Festival has a very versatile target group with different motivations for visiting the event. Potential visitors are prepared to travel great distances to attend the event which should motivate the organization to have a broader perspective on marketing activities.

The researcher also investigated the current marketing activities of the organization. The company has a strong offline marketing presence, but lacks a comparable online communication plan.  The organization has a satisfactory website and utilizes social media, but there additional underutilized avenues to pursue, such as mobile marketing applications and other social media platforms.

The event industry is adapting quickly to new trends and developments. In the opinion of the researcher, it is important not to get left behind. It is suggested that the following online marketing activities be considered: Mobile applications for events; crowd source funding for projects; and mobile marketing. In order to provided experiences that the target audience will find the most satisfying, the organization should make greater use of social media by expanding to multiple platforms. More trends and supporting narrative can be found in chapter 1.

Recommendations

The organization has a website and utilizes social media, but it should also broaden its perspective on making use of these tools. Online marketing should be made up from different elements such as mobile marketing, online advertising, brand awareness, and brand positioning; increasing the turnover should not be the only focus. It is recommended to look at the trends and developments in the event industry and chose appropriate marketing solutions accordingly.
2380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did you mine it or buy it? on: May 05, 2015, 06:32:39 PM
I'd like to ask the users here about how you got started in bitcoins and how you acquire bitcoins.

So the two questions are:

1. When you started, did you MINE or did you BUY bitcons?

2. If you are a regular user of bitcoins currently, do you MINE or do you BUY bitcoins?

I started with mining just a few months ago.  I keep everything I mine, when I need to buy something with BTC I buy that BTC and then spend it right away.  Hopefully all that I mine will be worth something significant some day.
