1641  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Modifying a USB hub for extra power and "I did it!" showoff thread on: September 16, 2015, 08:54:01 PM
So can I assume that any one I see running a compac stick at more than ~8GH (source) is using a hub they modified?  Or could they be using a "beefy" usb 2.0 hub that just happens to be able to handle more current?

Since usb 3.0 can provide 0.9A at each port can I assume a usb 3.0 hub would be able to run the compac sticks at a higher frequency than a 2.0 hub?

Just not all hubs are equal.  Best example is from old day's: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=253749.0

Look at that thread it shows some hubs and power that they have from ac.  They very GREATLY.
I'm not understanding the "Power from AC" column - 12V @ 5A for example, does that mean the entire hub is rated for that draw?  Each port?  What am I reading?  Cry
1642  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Modifying a USB hub for extra power and "I did it!" showoff thread on: September 16, 2015, 08:26:32 PM
In terms of easy over clock :

freq 250   uses 1.1 amps  does 13.7gh   uses about .33-34 watts a gh likes a fan but can be run without the fan.  you can use this link

<snip>

freq 425  uses 2.6 amps does 23.3 gh   uses about .58 watts a gh  and must have a fan

<snip>

should let you go to 1 amp maybe 1.2 amps,  still waiting for these  to test them.

<snip>

I would think that with the y adapter this  hub can do 4 sticks at freq 250   giving you  4.4amps at 5 volts    about 22 watts for about 66gh .  comes with a 3 amp 12 volt brick which has 36 watt max  and you are pulling 22 watts.   may not be able to do this once again I have these on hand and will test once the y-adapters come.

If a usb 2.0 port only provides 0.5A how are you guys seeing 1.1 amps or 2.6 amps supplied to a single stick?  Are these all done on modified hubs?

I'm trying to wrap my limited electrical engineering neurons around what I'm going to be able to do with my 4 compacs when they show up, e.g., how far can I push them safely on an unmodified usb 2.0 hub?  So far I've gotten as far as 0.5A @ 5V = 2.5watts (theoretical) max power available to a normal usb port.  I want to run 4 sticks on one hub and know what frequency I can push them to without smoking my hub.

I'm having as much difficulty formulating my question(s) as I am in trying to understand what it is I'm questioning, ha!

Take a look at AJRGale's hub modification thread over in the Hardware forum. That's a lot better place for this discussion.

I will do that because I don't think my question is coming through here, the answers/examples ya'll are giving me are nothing I don't already know so the failing must be in my asking.

Back to the topic at hand, maybe my last question above can be answered: What is the max. frequency that the compac will run on @ 2.5 watts?  I.e. Assuming a maxed out "standard" usb 2.0 port 5V @ 0.5A, what is the max. frequency the compac will run?
1644  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: September 16, 2015, 08:15:40 PM
Okay. I grabbed zadig now for when i will need it. I will probably try to use the gekko cgminer version and set it up when i receive my stick. I'm guessing soon. Smiley
Was just thinking the link should be in OP, since a ctrl+f of zadig doesn't find anything there.

I asked the same question a page or two back, and for the same reason.  The directions should note that zadig is required as part of using cgminer.

Do steps 1 & 2 only then enrol by posting here (this is temporary)

1. Go to your profile and add the appropriate signature!
2. Add your BIT-X address (with a 3) in the 'Other Contact Info' field here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=forumProfile
3. Get your UID by clicking your profile name in a post in any thread where you will be led to bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=xxxxxx. xxxxxx is your UID.
4. Enter your UID here: http://bitsig.website/beta/
5. You're in once the bot confirms (check your PMs)

So yes it's on the OP and yes you should use your Bit-x.com adress then wi thraw from your Bit-x.com adress to your normal adress if you feel like it Smiley
Do you have to use a BIT-X address for this campaign, or can I use one from my local wallet?

Please read the first post in this thread.

I did, several times before posting my question.  No where in the post does it stipulate you must use a BIT-X address, nor does it specifically state you cannot use a locally generated address.  So I pose my question again to you, do you have to use a BIT-X address for this campaign, or can I use one from my local wallet?

It's a yes or no question, the answer would have been much simpler than referring me back to a post that didn't answer the question.

The answer is yes.

Thank you.  As you can see, the first post does not stipulate that you can ONLY use a BIT-X account; it reads to me like a suggestion.  Consider rewording it in an unambiguous manner, thank you for your time.

So if USB standard is standard, then all 2.0 ports are created equal and I fail to see how one product/hub can supply "more power" than another.  Shouldn't any usb hub should be just as good as the next one since they all supply the same power per port?  Whether you have a 4 port hub or a 40 port hub, the power per port is the same.  I'm missing something here, someone please hit me over the head with it.

I'm also curious how one gets 1.5 amps or more out of a single usb port, was the port modified to supply additional amperage?

What is the max. frequency/voltage that the compac will run on @ 2.5 watts?

Electricity is so confusing.

Well I still have 2 of them, if anyone is looking to buy 1 I'd part with it.  I'll keep 1 just to torture myself with.

Can you send it to me?

Sure, if you send me some bitcoin first.  PM if interested.
1649  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo Mining on an S3 with 51.1 Difficulty - here we go! UPDATE: Block Found!! on: September 16, 2015, 06:01:39 PM
4 GHS and still going strong, best share so far is 744425, which isnt too bad on 2 usb miners. hoping to get my hands on a u3 sometimes soon

I have an extra U3 I don't need, PM me if you want to buy it.  I can sign a message with a link to a screen shot of it hashing or something if need be.

Right now I only have 6 usb sticks going for a whopping 12GH/s solo lottery mining.  This will increase when my gekkoscience compac sticks show up.

Hopefully it will cool down here eventually and I can fire up some of the "big guns" again.  Grin

As you can see, at least one radiator is broken off during transport.

It looks like two heat sinks broke off before it got to you.  Were they loose inside when you opened it up, or did they forget to put them on?

If you're asking USB power, you're looking at 0.5A off 5V so 2.5W

My hub takes power right from 12v, why would I only see 5v at each port?

Electrical stuff always baffles me.  Only had to take 1 EE class back in college, thank god.

What kind of power do those hubs put out on the ports? Looked at those before, but never could find the power output, so forgot about them.

I've sent them an inquiry, will share when I hear back.

So they replied back to me and said "Maximum is 500ma" which I already knew is the max rating for USB 2.0, but I don't think it answers our question.

0.5 amps off my 12v computer psu = 6 watts per port, right?  Am I missing something?

I think we're going to keep seeing 5%+ as all the new gen hardware comes online and the northern hemisphere cools down for fall.  The network may keep growing like this all the way to the halving.

also my calculations are different from yours because my cost for electricity is different, the r9 makes very good per day

Let's see your calculations.

You could work a minimum wage job for 1 hour a week in the USA and earn way, way, way more per month than your miner is pulling in.
