2461  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: PPT/Pirate Pass-Through OPs need our support now, more than ever on: August 30, 2012, 09:41:12 PM
Can someone please tell me why Pirate now needs these details???

A list of marks is a handy thing to have for a scammer. Or when they refuse then he'll say "Oh well I tried...". He never needed this information to run the business, not sure why he needs it to close down the business.

Or maybe he's a Man in Black sent to take down bitcoin, and they want some names to add to their database. [/tinfoil]

For this you will have to post in this topic the last 6 characters of your contest ticket # entry that you will get after you join the contest.

Saw this in a thread the other day, it's just another form of spam, except users are being used to do it. I don't find this acceptable, it was literally 4 pages of bc6759 with 3 or 4 real posts. I warned the OP for this and advised them to remove that portion, they didn't and just put Closed in the topic, so I just locked it.

At what point is this kind of spam acceptable though? TizzyTazzy did kind of the same thing, but it was a "slogan contest" with ultimately no winner. Other businesses are starting to do it too, and getting more bold. This results in constant spam and thread bumping for no reason. I don't think OPs should encourage spamming their threads, if they want to verify users accounts there are better ways to do it (unique codes in one of the unused fields in the profile for example), if they truly want to run a contest it would be a better fit in gambling, with no spam stipulations.

Here's another example from the current Coinabul thread, two of them actually.

Win a Bitcoin! What? A free Bitcoin?!
Here's how:

Respond to this post once every 24hrs with either:

Your favorite gold or silver coin (Style points for pictures!)
A one line slogan for Bitcoin
A one line slogan for Coinabul
Bolding is mine.

Just wanted to get other's opinions on this, it's something that's been bothering me a little bit for a while and seems to be getting more common.

Deleted pms will be deleted, but the receiver would still have a copy which he could share with admin via report to admin.

In the case where both the sender and receiver delete the pm, it is still accessible through the database backups, yes?

Thank you all for the help. I am starting to understand how it works around here.

Like he said, that's the way it works on any forum. Everything is accessible from the database, and yes that would include pms.

It's always safe to assume that nothing you post on a forum (or the internet) can be removed entirely.
2465  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcointalk.org Privacy Question on: August 29, 2012, 02:43:08 PM
Yes, both.
2466  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcointalk.org Privacy Question on: August 29, 2012, 02:23:28 PM
I am not complaining, but I apologise for my impatience. So then it's safe to say that nothing is safe and nothing is private here?

You should assume that nothing is safe, yes.

Deleted posts can still be seen by admins, cannot be seen by moderators nor users. Deleted pms will be deleted, but the receiver would still have a copy which he could share with admin via report to admin.

They could also be accessed via the (encrypted) database backups if nothing else.

It would also be nice to be able to post without subscribing to the thread.
Post + Unwatch.

Oh, thanks  Grin

Edit:
How do you do that? I cant unwatch threads I've posted to.

Two ways. Go to edit watchlist at the top of the actual watchlist, or just go to the thread and click unwatch.

So, you're not a big fan of accountability at it's most primal levels ?

In the end it isn't about me, or any other mod or admin. It's about the forum, and allowing everyone the ability to express themselves freely. The only reason there should be any moderation is to keep the forum categorized properly for easy reading, removal of disruptive posts, and dealing with trolls and spam.
If people need a second account in order to get their ideas across, then that's their decision.

Would you go up to someone in a public park and gag them because of whatever suspicions it is you have? Because that's what you're asking for.

It seems more that you want to attack the person behind the arguments, and not the arguments themselves. Your latest posts seem to support this. Just another form of trolling, and probably contributes to why people use alt accoints in the first place.

Is this in response to me? No, I don't attack the person making the arguments, as I've said before, resorting to ad hominem attacks is the surest sign that you're losing a debate. But if you're not willing to stand by your arguments, you shouldn't make them, rather than making a sock puppet to spout your fallacies for you.

Imagine if a senator yielded his time to one of his aides, so the aide could rant and rave, and the senator's reputation remained unsullied? Would that be considered right and proper, or just plain stupid?

No, I meant Bitlane, sorry. I've never seen anything like that from you.

I do see how it could be frustrating, but I see it kinda like the arguments for DRM in video games. While trying to make it harder for pirates to pirate games, all they're doing is making it more frustrating for legitimate users, since pirates are going to bypass any restrictions anyway.

2471  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM... www.mtgix.com ...SCAM - be careful! on: August 28, 2012, 01:10:00 PM
Maybe mtgox is not a one man army and Alex could ask his teammate to handle the case?

That's a better suggestion than implying he can't have any days off because of random scams, so at least you're thinking more rationally now.
2472  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Poll for Gun Control Advocates on: August 28, 2012, 12:26:03 PM
And yet once I moved to England I learned that even with comparable rates of crime in the country the fatalities from crime were significantly lower.  National gun control works, and we have concrete examples of that.  We don't have examples of peaceful utopias brought about by giving everyone more weapons.
Kennesaw, Georgia. Crime is down 50% since the law requiring everyone to have at least one gun in the house was passed.

Thanks for this, I had no idea about that.

Report threats of violence as you see them, they aren't allowed and I will remove them, and have banned people for it in the past (repeat offenders who went against my advice).
2474  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the best way for a newbie to begin purchaing BTC's? on: August 28, 2012, 12:00:56 PM
I'm going to suggest staying away from exchanges, and using something like Tangible Cryptography's service, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87094

There is also Bitinstant, they've made it pretty easy.
2475  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM... www.mtgix.com ...SCAM - be careful! on: August 28, 2012, 11:49:42 AM
You took some days off while potential customers might lose thousands of dollars on this scam?

So he's not allowed a vacation because of some random phishing website?

Besides anyone who falls for MtGix needs their head checked.
2476  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Kronos.io questions and properties on: August 28, 2012, 11:47:56 AM
Is this dead? Just checked the site and it didnt load  Cry

AFAIK they went into open beta with some serious security holes that may or may not have been put there intentionally by one of the owners(code writers) which led to a 4kBTC hack right off the bat which was too much damage for them to recover from.

That's my recollection as well (not sure about the amount though), here's the thread about it for more info.

In case you missed it Goat.

Goat, you are wiggling too much. Simply answer these simple question honestly if you capable of that.

- have you  managed a proxy for an opaque investment that has exhibited all the classical signs of a ponzi scheme?
- have you profited or expected to profit from prolongation and proliferation of a ponzi scheme?
- have you  owed a duty of care and fiduciary duty to anyone who gave you money?
- have you provided adequate risk disclosures?
- have you implied at any time that pirate is not operating a ponzi scheme?
- have you implied at any time that you know some magical/secret biz model behind pirate operation?
- have you implied at any time that you know true identity of pirate?
- have you promoted investment into and lent credibity (or false credibility) to a ponzi scheme in any way?
- have you tried to silence, spam, mock, attack those who publicly warned about the risks of investing into such schemes?
- ought you to know better?
- what is you your real name and address for service of legal papers?

These are simple questions. Answer them if you dare.

2478  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Pirate accomplices on: August 28, 2012, 08:48:07 AM
Didn't pirate say he's made 30k BTC or $300.000 USD in profits from his scam? I'm sure the IRS would love to know about this.

If it were a scam, he'd have made $5 milllion off of it, and seems the FBI would be more interested than the IRS.
True, but the burden of proof for tax evasion is much lower. Just ask Al Capone.

If it was a ponzi he would have a whole lot less than that. Where else would the 7% a week come from.

You know if you add that up that would be more than $5 million paid out so if he ran a ponzi I bet he is down a few million.

He can wright that off as a business loss correct?

 Cool

Except I'd.guess most reinvested the interest, and didn't actually realize all those paper gains.
2479  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - low risk, dank soul guarantee - 2.0%-3.0% weekly on: August 27, 2012, 05:11:27 PM
Because anybody can be successful at anything, but only if you believe you can be.

All I need is belief and I can do anything?  Okay, I want to be a billionaire and truly believe I can be.

That kind of thinking is closely aligned with 'If you can put your mind to it, you can do anything'.
You can be a billionaire, what's stopping you?  If you put your mind to it, you can do it.  But why would you want to be a billionaire?  That's the question.

That's some deep shit right there. You should add philosopher to your wish list along with be a rock star, start your own label, own movie studio, own a mansion on LOTS of land.
2480  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: centralized post of pirate payouts or other related news to the closing. on: August 27, 2012, 04:29:47 PM
Also, I think it would be instructive for someone with a website to create a Pirate debt clock, with a running tally of the current debt. Starting conditions could be BTC500,000 from last Friday, with 7% interest compounded weekly. Display the current debt, as well the change in the last minute, hour, day and week. Display in both BTC and US$.

That would be awesome. I'd donate if they put a bitcoin address on the page.
