Ventilation in an underground bunker is always necessary, and nuclear fallout would still be survivable, even bringing in outside air. The radiation is mostly contained within the particles which are in the air, not the air itself.

Quote
Almost all of the danger from fallout is caused by radiation from visible fallout particles of heavy, sand- like or flaky material. The air does not become radioactive due to the radiation continuously given off by fallout particles.

The visible fallout particles rapidly "fall out" of slow moving air. The air that a KAP pumps through a shelter moves at a low speed and could carry into the shelter only a very small fraction of the fallout particles that cause the radiation hazard outside. This fraction, usually not dangerous, can be further reduced if occupants take the simple precautions described in these instructions.

Nuclear War Survival Skills
http://www.oism.org/nwss/s73p937.htm

KAP it's talking about is the Kearny Air Pump, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kearny_Air_Pump

Also, a bit more about the exact purpose of the underground bunker.

Quote
Fallout protection is almost exclusively concerned with protection from radiation. Radiation from fallout is encountered in the forms of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, and as ordinary clothing affords protection from alpha and beta radiation,[13] most fallout protection measures deal with reducing exposure to gamma radiation.[14] For the purposes of radiation shielding, many materials have a characteristic halving thickness: the thickness of a layer of a material sufficient to reduce gamma radiation exposure by 50%. Halving thicknesses of common materials include: 1 cm (0.4 inch) of lead, 6 cm (2.4 inches) of concrete, 9 cm (3.6 inches) of packed earth or 150 m (500 ft) of air. When multiple thicknesses are built, the shielding multiplies. A practical fallout shield is ten halving-thicknesses of a given material, such as 90 cm (36 inches) of packed earth, which reduces gamma ray exposure by approximately 1024 times (210).[15][16] A shelter built with these materials for the purposes of fallout protection is known as a fallout shelter.

The danger of radiation from fallout also decreases with time, as radioactivity decays exponentially with time, such that for each factor of seven increase in time, the radiation is reduced by a factor of ten. For example, after 7 hours, the average dose rate is reduced by a factor of ten; after 49 hours, it is reduced by a further factor of ten (to 1/100th); after two weeks the radiation from the fallout will have reduced by a factor of 1000 compared the initial level; and after 14 weeks the average dose rate will have reduced to 1/10,000th of the initial level.[16]

I heard through the grapevine that the DDoS signature was different than those that betcoin.tm has been serving out to other BTC sites.
I heard it was martians. They must be trying to fork the chain.
1728  Other / Meta / Re: Merging threads on: September 26, 2013, 01:34:20 AM
Topics can be merged, but theymos doesn't want it done, so he disabled it. It's still enabled in the newbie forum for some reason, I've merged a few topics there in the past.
1729  Other / Meta / Re: Mods now deleting WTS bumps? on: September 25, 2013, 08:56:30 AM
I'd say to the above comments that I actually decreased the price. Rather than spamming with "OMGOGNMOGN PRICE DECREASE NOW THIS PRICE GET IT NOW", I simply said bump (18 hours?) after the OP.

Maybe the message deleted messages should actually give some context/be selectable between a few presets. In this case, it was because it had been ~18 hours between bumps and not 24, rather than being bumped itself.

Doesn't.matter, if we start giving exceptions for that, people WILL abuse it and use price drops of a satoshi to bump their threads. People will abuse any rule they can.
1730  Other / Meta / Re: Mods now deleting WTS bumps? on: September 24, 2013, 09:04:10 PM
24 hours between bumps, or between initial post and bump has always been the rule, it's nothing new.
1731  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Welcome to the new Bitcoin forum! on: September 20, 2013, 03:58:20 PM
Staff forum. They are just test threads, and configuration type stuff.

I inserted topic subject into the quotes as the first line.

First thread is
Welcome to SMF!
Welcome to Simple Machines Forum!

We hope you enjoy using your forum.  If you have any problems, please feel free to ask us for assistance.

Thanks!
Simple Machines

Second
Testing the new site platform
Drupal & Simple Machines Forum

Third is inaccessible so it must have been deleted, though it may still exist in the earlier backups which several of us have. If I had to guess it was a just a test thread made to be deleted so that could be tested and logs verified.

Fourth is
SMF Config Notes
I left the admin account set to the original SMF theme so if I somehow completely wedge the custom theme I can still get in to fix it.

I've got a neat little 12x12 coin image to replace those pip stars with.  Should look nice.  Also some nice button images to try.

The registration page has "hide your e-mail address" unchecked by default.  I must fix that in php before we can open up.

The Announcements forum is currently moderator access only.

Most of the replies are test replies, with some discussion about preventing spam at registration.

Looks like a bear to me, but I'm biased.
1733  Other / Meta / Re: BlackBear is badly abusing his moderating privileges on: September 19, 2013, 04:22:58 PM
I'll just post my pm to the op here, I won't post his but it doesn't really need context.

I didn't reply because I was using my phone at the time. Removed that thread as well, search my post history for referral spam, you'll see many redirects for referral spam, it has nothing to do with you. Referral codes are paid advertising, people take it too far, before I started removing them there was way too much of it here. You can complain about that general policy if you like, but pretending I have some agenda against you isn't going to help you.

Also, don't complain about other referral type threads if you aren't reporting them, yours was reported, I act on those fairly quickly if I see them. I can't read every child board thoroughly.

Like I said if you want to discuss that particular policy that's fine, maybe theymos will change his mind if there are enough good arguments for it. If you just want to attention whore and pretend like you're important enough for me to have a vendetta against you, well knock yourself out.

I'm also not sure why this is in off topic, moving it to meta. I'm also now considering a name change to BatBear.
1734  Other / Off-topic / Re: Connecting up an electric generator to an eletric device that has a plug on: September 19, 2013, 09:03:51 AM
A windmill or watermill would be your best bet then. Probably look better than mine, my wife said it's the most white trash thing she ever saw. She obviously hasn't seen my plans for the sequel lol.
1735  Other / Off-topic / Re: Connecting up an electric generator to an eletric device that has a plug on: September 19, 2013, 06:52:59 AM
Not sure what kind of generator you're building, but it likely won't be able to power much directly. Most of the guys I know using home built generators usually use them to charge batteries then run off those, not connect directly to the generator.

I made one using an old mower engine which drives a car alternator, which charges a bank of deep cycle batteries. It's very useful and the batteries are much more versatile than just a generator with a receptacle on it. A dc>ac converter would add a couple receptacles. Old mower engines are common, reliable, easy to work on, can be used for many useful things, and it would probably be a better place for you to start than whatever it is you're trying to do now I think.  In your op you mention powering an electric heater, then later mention wanting to build a generator powered by fire? Sounds like you don't really know what you want to do, cause that's a lot of unnecessary and wasteful steps to generate heat.

1736  Other / Meta / Re: X BTC stolen on: September 19, 2013, 06:05:37 AM
At least a couple of them are scammers attempting to garner sympathy. Most of them probably need to be moved to tech support or scam accusations at least, not really bitcoin discussion.
1737  Other / Off-topic / Re: Johniewalker is closing comments on his threads to scam people on: September 17, 2013, 12:42:46 PM
I don't think he's an outright scammer, but...well just read this post about the silver he sold someone here and form your own opinion. The rest of that page is also a good read if you really want to know more.

1738  Other / Off-topic / Re: SCAM ALERT: Johnniewalker's Bags of Cash on: September 17, 2013, 12:33:14 PM
From dictionary.com:
1. assay:   to subject (a substance, such as silver or gold) to chemical analysis, as in the determination of the amount of impurity

Running an assay on a picture? Is that a joke? If not, can you do an assay of one of the animal parts available in the Marketplace for me?
Who are you and who is your friend?
So I can call bullshit on any thread and have it moved to "scam accusations"?
Good to know.
Losing respect for these forums day by day, SMH.

How dare you question the assaying abilities of my guy, scammer.  I showed you the assay, just fess up to your scam already.
Uh, I can't tell if this is a joke.  You have provided no real proof that this "assay" has even been performed.

He posted a picture on the internet man, I don't know what else you could want.
1739  Other / Meta / Re: Per-user signature class on: September 16, 2013, 09:41:58 PM
Hm, I usually don't use adblock on sites I visit daily and like... isn't there a way to block signatures? Like an additional ignore function

You can turn them off and on in the profile, but that's all or none. This is per user.
