That's odd, seems counterintuitive considering the usage of that board, unless it's a side effect of some other restriction.
1862  Other / Meta / Re: When is an Off-Topic thread TOO off-topic? on: June 22, 2013, 10:35:22 PM
That was my original take, but then I thought, shouldn't the description read "Any topic other than Bitcoin" instead of "Other topics that might be of interest to bitcoiners" if that was the case?

You do have a point there, description implies there is a limit to how off topic it can get. I do remove referral spam for whatever site of the month people are pushing, but other than that I see no need to moderate it heavily.
1863  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 22, 2013, 06:08:26 PM
Demoted.. this shit sucks I have been involved with btc for a year now. I have done hundreds for transactions for paypal to newbies with no feedback history... I am actively working and growing the market everyday. I have personally signed up at least a 100 new users and I get demoted from a hero member to a full member!

This system is so shitty Mathew wright is a hero and I am not, fing tradefortress is a hero..
For a year?
Registered on 01/29/2013

It was a very short year.

Ya because my life begins on the day that I registered to this site
You're complaining about your status on this forum... So yeah, your bitcointalk life begins when you registered to this site... Roll Eyes
Do you want the forum to know since when you're involved in bitcoin before you registered?
Grow a brain

By the way why do you even care what is your status?

Grow a brain... I like that one. It has dick head written all over it... were you born an asshole or did you work up to it?

Do I even care about my status... ordinarily no and if I hadn't recieved hero status in the first place it wouldn't be a problem, but now I have told people that I am a hero member of the bitcointalk community.  If they are to look at my profile now they will see that I am not a hero member of the bitcoin talk community!!

So the admins have made a fucking liar out of me. That is bullshit, I dont like it.  Shocked

You could only be considered a liar by people who don't understand the concept of linear time.
1864  Other / Meta / Re: "Delete" topic handling on: June 22, 2013, 02:26:10 PM
Stuff like that, I usually don't delete, I move to archival.
1865  Other / Meta / Re: ... Company specific Child board in /Custom hardware/ on: June 22, 2013, 01:52:51 PM
Yeah, I don't like the idea of giving some companies their own sub forum.
1866  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoins threads in newbie jail on: June 21, 2013, 11:12:03 AM
You're right, we were talking about it in the staff forum a few weeks ago. Some of the names are kind of misleading as well.

The root cause of the problem is the newbie restrictions, because of those we can't move the threads where they go and turn it back into a true newbie section, instead it's the "spam your giveaways from your crap coin" forum.

Obvious and easiest solution would be to lift the newbie restrictions on alt currencies and just move them, along with service discussion and some others so newbies don't feel obligated to post in alt currencies. Theymos wants to wait for some improvement to moderation tools before he does that though.

Hi All,

I have written an entire blog post on the (2,000+ words) and try as I might I dont seem to be able to format it here so it makes sense so you can read it here;-

http://mineforeman.com/2013/06/21/more-info-on-the-mtgox-temporary-hiatus-on-u-s-dollar-withdrawals/

Have a read, I had a lot of fun writing it (perversely).

Neil

I did read your post, looks like service discussion to me. With all the phishers and malicious links posted, I'm not going to click on every random blog post. Did you ever consider, that since there seems to be so much confusion over where it goes, maybe a title rename to more accurately reflect the content of the article would be in order?

Consensus seems to be it belongs there so I'll leave it where it is, but I won't complain if another mod with more time wants to double check it and move it if they feel so inclined.

@john, I deleted no posts.
1868  Other / Meta / Re: Forbidding useless posts when user has a paid signature on: June 21, 2013, 03:51:15 AM
By useless I mean: '+1', 'yeah', 'good idea', etc
I don't condone useless posts but I think a tiny proportion of such posts can be tolerated
Except if you are displaying ads in your sig IMO, so the idea is to make this strictly forbidden: deletion of posts, then PM warning, then ban even if they are not spamming

I completely agree. What makes this worse is when people are posting things completely off-topic. For example, one thread I saw the other day was talking about an issue with a mining program and some spammer came there and replied with a message along the lines of "yes its best," which had nothing at all to do with the topic or any of the discussion going on. This is seen far too often here.

There are also the people that have tons of posts that are nothing but their BTC address as they go from thread to thread just posting it either as spam or in the hopes that people pay random BTC addresses.

Report those spam posts and they'll be deleted!

There's too many to follow, lol. Also, I've had bad luck in the past with reporting people that are extorting/harassing people. Hell, I reported one person that was going from thread to thread calling everything a scam. Many others reported him as well and nothing was done about it, so I lost faith in the system after that.

If you're talking about the guy I think you are, you should check when his last post was, and consider why he might have stopped posting  Wink.
1869  Other / Meta / Re: brazilian moderador is using his power to sell more bitcoins and delete posts on: June 20, 2013, 06:29:45 AM
This topic https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=237276.0 here before I post in the forum English, Portuguese was removed from the forum. Even being on topic. Not explained the reason for the exclusion. It just was not in the interest of the moderator who did.

There may be valid complaints in this thread, but this isn't one of them. Only reason I hadn't removed that one you linked to was because I didn't see it. It's just more referral spam, I've removed several threads similar to that one as well.
1870  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 19, 2013, 09:07:06 AM
If I post 1 message per fortnight for the next year, I'll get hero. That incentive to contribute.

If your only reason for posting is for a title, then you're probably part of the problem.
1871  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 19, 2013, 06:49:34 AM
but one Point isn't mentioned,

lot of People wouldn^t care to Answer all the Questions in this Forum
so it's also an incentive to more Quality not just spamming, because you don't wan't to get banned that would be a decrease in Income

So why the hassle, some Hero Member are posting way more useless Stuff, than that few Guys wo allegedly Spam

A few? That's cute.
1872  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 19, 2013, 06:18:48 AM
I like it, the old way provided incentive for people to spam, and spammers can be difficult to moderate, and time consuming.

Why is this so hard to understand... it doesn't prevent spammers at all. Now all you do is create 10 accounts, log in to each one once a week, reply to 14 topics. Wait a while, oh look boom 10 hero accounts which are much harder to identify as fakes, without the need to spam.

Problem?

It isn't about preventing spammers, it's about removing the incentive for people to spam in the first place. Now there's less reason for people to make new accounts and spam their way to a thousand posts in a week or two. Also results in less need for moderation, which is a good thing for everyone.

We can't stop people from making fake accounts in order to scam, but we can stop them from spamming hundrends/thousands of posts for status.

1874  Other / Meta / Re: Custom Hardware Organization? on: June 18, 2013, 05:28:10 PM
I'll just create a Group Buys section for now.

That works, will at least make it readable so we can evaluate it better. I moved most of them, left some redirects so people will notice.
1875  Other / Meta / Re: Custom Hardware Organization? on: June 18, 2013, 06:31:24 AM
Sections need to be vendor-neutral. What do you think of:

Mining
    Hardware
        [directly in Hardware: ASIC, etc.]
        Low-performance hardware (CPU, GPU, etc.)
        Group buys

I'll move everything currently in Hardware directly to Low-performance and everything in Custom Hardware to Hardware.

Are more sections than this needed?

Sounds good, I'm still thinking about whether we need a mining marketplace forum to separate that stuff out. I'd rather see actual discussion about hardware, and not companies advertising, like the difference between services and service discussion.  Using the current marketplace works, but that stuff is very specific and probably isn't interesting to the rest of the forum. Computer hardware is already flooded with asic/FPGA stuff.

I dunno, I usually trim em out. Guess I'm used to it, I do see a lot of people mess it up though.
1878  Other / Meta / Re: Spamming to get the Hero status and get trust on: June 17, 2013, 08:38:38 PM
Reports I most often mark as bad are people reporting scammers, that's what scammer accusations is for.  Next most common bad report would be reporting others for bad language or being insulting.

It would be convenient if there was a way for the reporting person to see which exact reports where marked as 'bad' or 'correct' because sometimes it's not as clear as it may look.

For example:

- I learned from John that old threads are not moved for historical reasons (when I asked why the NMC thread wasn't moved to the alt-coin board)
- as for the bad language or being insulting - I think I only reported one such post, don't know if the report was marked as 'good' or 'bad' but I've done because it conveyed no other message apart from the insult, it was deleted after I complained somewhere that it wasn't being deleted Tongue
Could someone comment whether this post is still valid/relevant?

I'm not particularly in favor of that because I don't feel like defending every single thing I mark as a bad report, but I'll keep that in mind and try to pm people more about it.

1. Free speech - you can say anything as long as it is relevant and presented in a calm and polite manner. Swearing, SHOUTING etc. make your post more likely to be removed.

Many users posts' are not ''calm and polite''* and are not deleted, could that post be edited to reflect the current moderating policies?

Are posts to be reported and deleted if they are in any way insulting and add no value to the topic (either the rest of the post is off-topic or it consists of the insult only)?
Are posts to be reported and deleted if they are excessively* insulting and add no value to the topic (either the rest of the post is off-topic or it consists of the insult only)?
Are posts to be reported and deleted if they are in any way insulting but at least in some way are on-topic?
Are posts to be reported and deleted if they are excessively insulting but at least in some way are on-topic?

*I know these terms are not absolute etc.

No, I don't consider that post to be representative of how I feel, and I'll leave it at that.

Posts absolutely should be removed if they only contain insults though, it leads to nothing productive. Insults along with discussion is fine, I'm not going to demand people be nice.
1879  Other / Meta / Re: Spamming to get the Hero status and get trust on: June 17, 2013, 07:34:02 PM
I wouldn't worry about report spamming. If it can't get handled we just need more mods, and logic follows that a person who has many accurate reports would be the most efficient choice (less reports, more moderation  Grin). I'm sure there's dishonest people who would game it though.

Looking at my email we only get around..60? a day for the entire forum.

Reports I most often mark as bad are people reporting scammers, that's what scammer accusations is for.  Next most common bad report would be reporting others for bad language or being insulting.
1880  Other / Meta / Re: Trolls on: June 17, 2013, 04:14:14 PM
I never said it wasn't allowed. I said it was rude and pretty shitty. not to mention insulting. However the moderator who posted here said it was "off topic" so I guess it's not allowed.

I said it wasn't allowed, I'm the moderator who posted here earlier as well. I was responding to gweedo's assertion that it's hindering the free market when we don't allow people to spam others business threads, when if you actually follow that train of thought to the end, it would actually be the result of a free market.

I think you've been smoking too much of that free market chronic  Wink.
