2541  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ravencoin [RVN] PoW GPU Mining | Asset Transfer Blockchain (Updated ANN) on: July 25, 2019, 02:42:14 PM
quick question.

i have raven official wallet 2.1.1.0 with coins in it. i understand the newer raven wallet cant use any already existing blockchain data it has, ie i need to re download the blockchain from scratch.

if so, i just grab the wallet.dat, blow the existing install away (all files are on a separate drive in a folder, so easy), dl the current wallet and install it, copy wallet.dat back to the raven installation. then im good to go?

Power is up.  Have to say the two small generators I had were very good at keeping house working.

look into a transfer switch and genset that can run most o your house.

[...]

Yeah but on the cheap  I got these 2500 watt models for 199 each

http://pulsar-products.com/products/pg3250/?

I have really reliable power. Last blackout was Hurricane Sandy back in 2012.
Maybe 3 short ones well under an hour from Oct 2012 to July 2019.

I got these 2 in 2013 they were left over from a big stockup for Sandy and I grabbed them.

nice price for those thats for sure.

i am looking to get a smaller, pure sine wave, fairly quiet and fairly lightweight generator with something like 1800-2000 watts or so. the kind quiet enough for camping and such. be nice for shorter power outages where i just need coffee and electronics for a few hours.

my 7,000 watt transfer switch with an 8,500 watt genset can power everything but the electric stove (we use an electric hotplate) and electric dryer (go without it).

but the well, hvac, fridge hotwater, lights, electronics (no miners though) all most important COFFEE MACHINE.

just one cable from (keystart) genset to house and flip the xfer switch. did it so the wife could do it if im not here.

So, yeah, I was kind of kicking myself for having to sell 3.5% of my bitcoin, and I ended up making such sale around $4k on average. Over subsequent months and until about April 1 (before the BTC price boom), I was able to repurchase about 25% of those sold coins for at or below the sale price, but I still had kind of kicking myself for taking a gamble that did not really pay off and forced me to sell a portion of my stash at a time that was somewhat inconvenient for me, also based on the dip in BTC price, too.

i always treated btc as a "sold as needed" thing and the price you got at the time was the price you got. no trying to time stuff, the point was to get fiat for some goal.

as im doing now.  for reasons, im selling a not insignificant part of my stack. my financial guy and i met and we decided to activate one plan now, well ahead of schedule.

*achievement unlocked*

so because of the amount im selling, i personally feel i can call 9-10k price as near bottom.

Looks like it's time to Troff Tron

(Wonder how many people will get that without googling)

I learned basic on a TRS-80 and later owned a TRS-80 model II with an 8 inch floppy.  Got it from a local doctor who had upgraded his office computer and was going to throw it out!  Ah the good ol' days.

still have my trs-80 model I with level 2 roms and the expansion interface. and a lnw-80 computer (more or less a trs-80 clone on steroids). between them they have 5x5.25" and 2x8" drives but they havent been run since the 80s. i hope to get them running again as a winter project. maybe.

Can someone tell me what is the price of btc in 2011 in terms of every month?  I cannot find this on coinmarketcap as it doesn't go back that far.

https://en.bitcoinwiki.org/wiki/Bitcoin_history#Bitcoin_in_2011

basically when i started in mid 2011 it was around $10. then ~$30 at some point, then crashed down to $2 in early 2012 iirc. the link will have the real info.

Also where did majority of ppl keep their btc at the time?  Is it bitcoin core wallet where you had to download whole blockchain?  Was it basically that or mount gox?  What about paper wallets?  Or there wasn't those back then?

always used official core wallet (and actually still run it with the same wallet.dat from 2011 even now), with the full blockchain download. and moved coins to paper wallets later on as i got comfortable with them. never trusted any 3rd party wallets then, and especially not cloud based ones.

mtgox was just an on/off ramp for me. i didnt really buy, sell or trade; i mined most of the btc i had.

Google authenticator BLOWS, that thing is a piece of shit and you don't have a recovery seed anymore.

do you not copy the seed code or the qt code tyhat it initially gives you and keep it in a safe place or places?

i like the fact that the ONLY copy of the seed is in your possession alone and your responsibility to keep safe. as in not your seed code copy alone (as in only you have the only copies and not some cloud based crap), not your 2FA.

ive changed phones (breakage, nothing salvageable) and my paper backups of the google auth codes had me back up and running on the new phone in no time. not to mention there are pc versions of google auth you can use in a time critical situation.
2548  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Creating more bitcoin on: July 16, 2019, 10:53:13 AM
its eight decimal places now. that can easily be extended to 16 (or whatever) or more decimal places as needed. so, no need for more than 21 million. just add more decimal places.

8 decial places is the smallest amount you can use in a transaction.  So going to 16 dp would require code changes.  You are just making more satoshis as opposed to more bitcoins.

thats the point. divide btc into smaller pieces as needed. a code change to add decimal places does not violate the 21 million hard cap, that stays immutable. adding more than 21 million btc violates the whole point of btc.. 21 million btc, and thats it. period.

as for a satoshi being the smallest unit right now, thats just a name. call the new smallest unit a microsatoshi (or whatever) or something. theres no real limit as to how small a unit of btc can be made.

If bitcoin goes below $9000, Trump will probably quote retweet his last bitcoin tweet and say something more stupid and childish about bitcoin.

well to be fair, even if it goes up he will retweet that last tweet and say something more stupid and childish about bitcoin.

after all tweeting stupid and childish things seems to be a hobby of his.
2550  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Creating more bitcoin on: July 15, 2019, 10:58:39 AM
I mean, 21 million isn't much.  Smiley
Being limited is always good, and that's what i think of bitcoin. As a limited edition coins.

7.7 billion people in the world and 21 million bitcoin.  You do the maths.  That would be 0.002 btc each not counting whales and lost bitcoins, so probably a lot less than that.  That only gives you a few decimal places to play with.  If you actually want people to use bitcoin, then you need to make sure there is enough to go round

its eight decimal places now. that can easily be extended to 16 (or whatever) or more decimal places as needed. so, no need for more than 21 million. just add more decimal places.

auto return/landing on low battery/signal loss for the win. lands right next to your passed out body.

programmed mine to do autonomous runs around my property via gps, good way to monitor seasonal (or man/animal made) changes. mainly i use it to monitor the beavers who have set up a dam thats flooded several back acres on mine and my neighbors properties.

industrious little buggers , beavers. done a lot of flooding via their dams. natures engineers at work.

Interesting to hear about the beavers on your property as I have a
stream running through my property also and like 3 years ago it turned into a small
lake due to beaver damming. It's since drained back to a stream and the beavers moved out.
I suspected human intervention but as my property is no longer flooded, I didn't complain or ask questions.
Huge fine for breaching a beaver dam around here so I didnt touch it.

between the ones on my property and others upstream and downstream they have set up shop pretty big time. lots of acres flooded. interesting how they respond to heavy rains and floods that mess things up. they can shore up a damaged damn in no time.

pretty sure they are protected here too although never checked as never intended to interfere and i  honestly dont mind nature running its course, its one reasom i bought the property with its acreage. to watch wilderbeats and critters do their stuff with no humans interfering.

i used to take the jeep down to watch them (along with doing some wheeling too of course), now with the drone its even easier.

OMG I go for a nice soak in the bathtub and get out to see we had an $1100 correction/retrace.

We're still over $12k though so I'm still calling a new AYH by the end of July.

industrious little buggers , beavers. done a lot of flooding via their dams. natures engineers at work.

Aren't beaver dams the reason Alfred Nobel invented dynamite? Half a stick does wonders.

possibly.

i must admit initially i wasnt too pleased losing several back acres to swamp/pond.

but nature will take its course, even if one tries to disrupts it. and when all is said and done, all the dead trees etc in the swamp will fall, decompose, and give life to new fertile soil for new growth when the beaver dams are gone.

and it very cool monitoring them. i can fly to and hover around 10-15 feet from the dams and lodges, plus areal views. kinda my new hobby, checking the beavers and their engineering projects out. the drone doesnt seen to bother them at all.

Later wo bros... Gonna go fly my drone now and spy on the neighbors.
....2nd thought, I'd better not.
Drinking and drone flying not a good combo....

auto return/landing on low battery/signal loss for the win. lands right next to your passed out body.

and spying on neighbors? for shame.

of course all my neighbors have given me permission to fly over their property as need on the drones way to its main mission when needed. and of course telling the neighbors the drone is at their disposal for their own property inspection helps too. done some property perimeter runs and roof inspections here and there for them.

is it "halving" or "halvening"?
enquiring minds need to know....

halving-from an old english word (Middle english, possibly the proper way to write/say it)
halvening-sounds cool (like 'quickening')

i use both, but lean towards halvening.. just sounds cooler to me. plus halvening just sounds more like "bitcoiny" kinda term as its mainly used in the crypto context. it seems to denote its special status.. not just a halving, but the halvening, a special event unique to crypto. and thus worthy of a new spelling/definition.

asked the cat a while back. and i think i finally figured out the blink pattern he uses to communicate.. its haiku!

bitcoin price will be
twenty three thousand dollars
Q3 in nineteen

all other blink patterns since have turned out to be some very creative insults.

1.  Was it easy to buy btc?  How did one that in the US?  Was it through the exchanges and which ones?  Mount Gox i believe was most popular one?  You had to connect your us bank account to it right?  Or did ppl buy it through certain sites and pay via paypal or underground sites or things like that?

i mined mine on gpus in 2011 after a tech forum mentioned it.

2.  Where did you store your btc back then?

core wallet.

3.  Was it easy to acquire btc free back then or something?

i remember getting some btc from a faucet, maybe the one gavin set up but not sure. i used the faucet to test how receive worked in the core wallet.

to sell it to dollars i xfered coin to mtgox, them used dwolla to send to my bank. dont recall exactly what the steps were, but mainly i remember dwolla wanted your bank account routing number and what your account on gox was.

I am saying that I have already become richer than expected, I expect to become even richer, but also, I have enough cushion in my investment and even my strategy and even my psychology that I am also o.k. if I neither become rich as fuck, even if I do not maintain the same level of excessive richness that I have already achieved and even if I become more poor.

Of course, my preference is up or even maintaining, but even while I am ready, willing and able to accept going down a bit, in the end, there is also a certain level of going lower that would start to bother me, especially if I am having to go back to being a lot more frugal like I was in my earlier years and what got me to where I am today, but I have also gotten used to a bit of a splurging lifestyle that I prefer to continue and to even increase the amount of splurging that is possible.

watching the price drop off a cliff is much easier when youre playing with house money and are already more or less ok with your traditional financial situation already.

the only time i got really bummed out with the price was when i experienced the 1st correction/crash/dip whatever, which probably happens with most people on their 1st time experiencing that 80+ percent drop.

mine was 2011-2012 when i 1st started mining.

$10 (gentlemen, start your engines) to $35 (yeah baby!) to $2 (well that sucked)

of course i now had kick ass gpus as a consolation prize so i didnt really mind it so much.

to get that really really sucks thing again it would have to go under 2k for a while. and while it wouldnt hurt me like you i would have to adjust my lifestyle a bit. but someone whos upside down on btc will most likely have a far higher figure.
