1601  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 2FA HW security keys, Yubikey&such. on: October 23, 2020, 12:12:51 PM
Yubikey is great - I bought my first Yubikey back in 2016, but the problem is that I didn't fasten it to my keychain and ended up losing it after a couple of months. Since then, I regularly use my Trezor as a second factor. If someone is not in the know, then I remind you that any Trezor, in addition to the function of a wallet for cryptocurrencies, can be used as a second factor for authentication. Very convenient indeed.

yes, trezor is a good backup to a yubikey.

of course i like having several yubikeys for just such a situation.. lost or broken although it seems awful tough to break.

also a yubikey doesnt scream "crypto" if you use it in public for 2fa.

another advantage a yubikey has over a trezor -- no bad usb infection possible. which i believe (not entirely sure) a trezor is susceptible to.

i use both btw

You ever blow into one of those pulmonary test jigs? Not fun at all..
"Beep- ""Blow blow blow blow blow blow"" hhhheeee ""blow blow blow blow"" Beep" ... Like damn man, I've been flat chested for 10 seconds and I'm supposed to keep blowing? Humans can do that?

you can buy home versions of spirometers (i think thats the term). just get a baseline and keep seeing if you can match it.

not a diagnostic tool per se but it can help you notice a gradual decline. log your readings

a pulse oximiter is useful too. just keep in touch with your MD, these are not meant to be substitutes for true medical care.
1603  Economy / Speculation / Re: My 'vast' BTC hodl on PayPal on: October 23, 2020, 10:21:24 AM
Look do I think anyone should have 25%-100% of their BTC on PayPal alone .

But a few bucks worth? yes.

Based on my past rebates earned on retailmenot.com. I will end up  buying 400 to 500 usd worth of btc from Oct 2020 to Dec 2021.

Should be fun to watch this.

yeah i may park a small bit there too. maybe robinhood too. mainly to support it on their platform, hopefully it takes off to a point.

yes its "paper" bitcoin that cant leave either platform. but its a start. people see it and hopefully wiull see its upsides (and of course downsides for that matter).

this may be peoples 1st real exposure to bitcoin. cant hurt imo. and seriously until people get the idea of real wallet security, seeds etc this may be their safest exposure for now.

What's Coming To The Bitcoin Core Wallet in 0.21

https://achow101.com/2020/10/0.21-wallets

Not keen on the bit titled Compatibility down the bottom -

Unfortunately, to make progress, sometimes compatibility needs to be broken. Sometimes the past needs to be left behind. As the Bitcoin Core wallet moves to making Descriptor Wallets the default, and later, only, wallet type, a future release of Bitcoin Core will no longer be able to open Legacy Wallets.

https://achow101.com/2020/10/0.21-wallets

(It does go on to say it will be 2023 when the final change is made)

errrr

nope nope nope nope nope

She still like, writes personal checks for all her bills, and balances her checkbook against her statements..
I ask her "What are you doing? Checking the banks math?".. Granny, "Yes"..

I keep trying to get her to just put the bills to her CC and then pay that once a month, or get auto withdrawal set up, but nope, I guess she loves writing all those checks, actually mailing them, and balancing her checkbook still..

i still run my stuff through a printing calculator. old habits and such. nothing like a real paper trail.

for those ancient peeps with their intel 486s cruising through ebay all day.. all have paypal and now bitcoin is just another buy. just click.

go grandma.
1608  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 22, 2020, 01:17:43 PM
The whole "not your keys not your Bitcoin" has always been a bit too absolutist for me. It implies that you will lose your Bitcoin every time if you don't have full control of your keys at all times.

If you want to use a metaphorical valet temporarily you aren't failing some Bitcoin purity test.

You give your keys to the valet for convenience in hopes that he will bring your car back. You run a tiny risk of not getting it back, but some people like to valet their car.

That's fine as long as it's only a portion of your bag. If you have the keys to the majority of your coins, and some amount on exchanges/web wallets for reasons, fine. The saying "not your keys not your coins" is for the millions of people that ONLY have BTC on such or such website as IOUs.

for 1st exposure to btc for a crypto noob, paypal and robinhood are a start. sure, theyre not coins you have the key to, and you can only buy/trade in the platform and you cannot move it from their platform. but its dead easy for noobs to buy and watch the price with (sorta) skin in the game now. and no seeds, no private keys, no files to backup etc of course those are the very things that make bitcoin bitcoin but that can come later for those noobs once they get it.

sure its probably fractional reserve too (or will be) but exposure of any kind is good. those who get it will sell the fake crap, buy real bitcoin and move it to their own wallets when they learn the ropes.

Crack smoking and prostitutes aren’t really all that offputting to most leftists now is it?

Seeing whom predominantly non-leftists put in the White House 4 years ago I don't think that's what's going in here. It's either "5 generations of my family voted [blue|red] so I can't possibly change now even if the candidate fucks a goat" or "this person promised something that I really like so who cares about the goat", or a combination thereof.

well that kinda debends on who the goat is doesnt it?
1611  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] Drugs on: October 19, 2020, 10:59:22 AM
Anyone who uses the word "drugs" to describe naturally occuring psilocybin clearly has absolutely no idea what they are talking about, and probably categorizes marijuana and heroin as equally "bad" because the TV told them so.

reefer madness from 1936 - the one the usa government made. grab a fattie and enjoy.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028346/

plus the SNL skit on the pot police (dont know what the skit was called). Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi i believe.

great stuff

... hope is not a plan.

correct. faith, however, is. and i dont mean "faith" as in it will protect you from standing on the tracks when a train comes at you; thats just stupidity.. and it seems far to many seem to think their "faith" will protect them in such manners.

however this thread isnt the place for any real discussion on this.

to each there own. i dont force my faith on others, and dont expect others to force theirs on me. let and let live works for me.

i will say this though. give a good read on the texts on the various flavors of faith (not saying you havent btw, this is for others reading this post who may not of). dont blindly accept anything on others words alone. look at their actions, then decide if its worth a look.
1613  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "10 Reasons Bitcoin Is A Terrible Investment" - A pathetic attack against BTC? on: October 18, 2020, 10:45:52 AM
Only a few hours ago, The Motley Fool has posted an article in an attempt to gather as many arguments against Bitcoin as possible - without even realizing how pathetic most of them really sound. This further proves that, besides the "money laundering" already tiring and annoying attack against BTC, there isn't really much negative stuff one could say about the King of crypto.

9. The tax situation is a nightmare
If you think preparing your federal income taxes stinks now, try preparing them after investing in and/or using bitcoin in any transaction. The Internal Revenue Service expects you to report capital gains and losses tied to investment activity, as well as gains and losses associated with purchasing goods and services.

For example, if you bought a single bitcoin token at $11,000, then used a fraction of your bitcoin to buy a new smartphone for $1,000, you'd have to calculate the value of your bitcoin used at the time of the transaction and recognize capital gains or losses relative to your cost basis. It's a gigantic headache.
While this is one point I agree with, I strongly believe this has been done intentionally so that more people stay away from Bitcoin. If we had easy tax reports for cryptocurrencies, people would have been more attracted towards them. But when you know using BTC means a tax reporting nightmare, you may as well stay away from it.

Again, this is something that could change. It's not a non-changeable situation. It's just that not enough people complain. Smiley

?

for the most part taxes on bitcoin have been pretty easy. yes you have to keep track of buys/trades/cashouts but with decent record keeping (largely automatic on most exchanges, just import your history) and the various crypto tax related services that have been available for years now i have had no issues. it sorts and matches it all up, calculates the capitol gains or regular income (say from mining) prints it all out, i give it to my account and and its done. purchases to merchants do need to be entered manually but there arent a lot of those in my case (say pm purchases and such for example).

admittedly you could do tons and tons of merchant payouts but still, record keeping isnt THAT hard to enter manually into a crypto tax service. just need the date and amount, the crypto tax service calculates the price on that day and matches it with the rest of your history automatically so i dont see any real show stopper issues or even that much extra work tbh.

1615  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The problem of cemeteries and until where the cemeteries will be sustained? on: October 17, 2020, 10:45:02 AM
cemeteries they exist now take up space. seems eventually that space will be reclaimed and sold for housing or whatever.

i prefer cremation. an urn takes up very little space. as a bonus no alien species thousands of years from now will be able to grab some dna from my corpse and clone me into a food source or slave or whatever.

For the history buffs, it is thought that Justinian plaque (most likely caused by plaque bacteria- Yersinia pestis) finished the Roman empire.

i thought the lead they used to line aqueducts and containers and such had some influence too. long term lead poisoning.
