2581  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator [v0.17] on: January 06, 2012, 03:12:51 PM
Because ALL bitcoin addresses always start with 1. No such thing as a 3 address.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Address :
Quote
A Bitcoin address, or simply address, is an identifier of approximately 34 alphanumeric characters, beginning with the number
1 or 3
An example of a Bitcoin address is 37muSN5ZrukVTvyVh3mT5Zc5ew9L9CBare

I'm not sure why they say that there. AFAIK the 1 comes from a version field indicating Bitcoin (vs. Namecoin etc) by convention. I've never seen a 3... address in use or displayed. I don't think it's because they "ran out" since addresses are generated randomly. I could be wrong though as I don't know all the innards and history.

You can actuallly run oclvanitygen at the same time as mining. I did it and it worked and dropped some % of mining speed. It did seem to be a bit unstable or maybe that was just pushing my OC a bit hard. I had better results when disabling the GPU from mining.

3 addresses are newer versions which use BIP0013. As these addresses are not hashes of pubkeys or privkeys, but rather scripts, generating vanity addresses is rather useless.

Proposal for a new expression: "bitcoined" = screwed by bitcoins, i.e.

USD's are bitcoined on bitcoinica at the moment :-)

I propose we add this to the dictionary.
Code:
 Bitcoin
1. n, proper. An example of a non-inflationary distributed decentralized unregulated and unregulatable online currency with a peer-to-peer structure founded by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. An instance of cryptocurrency. e.g. "Bitcoin has attracted investors from Argentina to Zimbabwae."
2. adj, proper. Of or pertaining to Bitcoin. e.g. "The Bitcoin network has survived another attack."

 bitcoin
1. n, countable. A cryptocurrency with little deviation from Bitcoin. e.g. "IxCoin is just a bitcoin with higher inflation." pl. bitcoins
2. n, countable. A unit comprising 100 000 000 of the individual units of currency used in Bitcoin. e.g. "That will be 50 bitcoins." pl. bitcoins, bitcoin (rare, semi-informal)
3. v.t. (informal) To screw or make something look bad via usage of bitcoins. Coinage. e.g. "The USD is being bitcoined again." 3rd sin. i. bitcoins s.p./past.p. bitcoined p.p bitcoining
2583  Economy / Speculation / Re: And the freaking gamblers are at it again ... on: January 06, 2012, 01:17:13 AM
I believe this is a bubble. I have believed this is a bubble. I have always believed there will be another bubble. But just because its value is a bubble does not mean it is not useful. Many internet stocks crashed big-time back then in the 2000-2003 bubble-popping crisis. Some of these drive the backend of your everyday applications today.

Stability is not as important as you make it seem. Nobody would argue gold is stable, for example. That does not mean gold traders are damn fools.

There will no longer be allowed math problems on this thread.

Unless you can solve this:

When does 14 + 23 = 19 + 45
This can be solved with a simple substitution cipher. The key is below:
1 => 4
2 => 3
3 => 5
4 => 2
5 => 9
9 => 8
2585  Economy / Speculation / Re: $/BTC Time Series (Probability) Analysis on: January 05, 2012, 02:45:37 PM
The last charts have a resistance overlapping the support. Is this by design or an error?
2586  Economy / Speculation / Re: WTF on: January 04, 2012, 08:40:49 PM

,=. outside USA
In fact, "." is used primarily in three continents: North America, Asia, and Austrailia. "," is used primarily in only 2: Europe and South America. This wikipedia section details this in more detail.
2587  Economy / Speculation / Re: $5.5 today!? on: January 04, 2012, 05:50:42 PM
$5.6 now, we're skyrocketing aren't we?
2588  Economy / Speculation / Re: $5.5 today!? on: January 04, 2012, 05:49:31 PM
told you.
Still $5.479...
Edit: Now $5.502. So we did reach $5.5 again, how long till $6?
2589  Other / Off-topic / Re: Totally Off-Topic! on: January 04, 2012, 05:09:56 PM
Let's see how smart you all are:

When does 4 X 5 = 32 ?

If it helps any, 4 + 5 = 13.
Didn't need the hint, since I even prefer base 6. The multiplication table is rather snazzy:
12345
112345
24101214
3132023
42432
541

Trivia: All prime numbers bigger than or equal to 116 (=710) end in 1 or 5.

Since senbonzakura didn't give an acronym, I will use his name.

Since Matthew didn't give an acronym, I will use his name.

2591  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Bubble 2012 on: January 04, 2012, 04:31:38 PM
Therefore, if you know it's going down, sell and buy 2x, 3x, etc. more BTC at the lower price for holding.
The only thing you should really know for sure, is that you don't know.

You don't *KNOW* shit. Neither do I.
In the long term, we have a deflationary, uncounterfeitable "commodency", so ultimately it can only go up.
I love debunking this fallacy.

Remember IxCoin? In the long term, it is a deflationary, uncountrerfeitable "commodency". But in what direction is it going to go?
2592  Other / Off-topic / Re: Looking for 5 writers to publish articles on my blog on: January 03, 2012, 05:27:04 PM
The above post and the target of the link are typographically broken, mostly by basic mistakes, such as missing spaces after punctuation and not using the forum's hyperlink feature. Likewise, spelling mistakes such as "have a nce day", which the browser displays on typing.

Not a good start to get quality bloggers on board.
Missing spaces after punctuation is not a typographical error. In fact, in countries like Mexico it is customary to not include spaces after them. Also, realize that the forum's hyperlink feature is not mandatory.

I don't have any experience with blogging at all, but I think that the completely different writing styles which would be published will confuse possible readers. How will you preserve the high standards if there are no standards at all?
2593  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anarchic p2p Litecoin Market Portal on: January 02, 2012, 11:03:03 PM
(Sorry if this seems like pointless marketing.)

The established Bitcoin P2P Osiris portal also has a Litecoin subforum where one can discuss about Litecoin in general. If you are getting the software to post in portals anyways, you may as well check it out.
2594  Economy / Speculation / Re: $5.5 today!? on: January 02, 2012, 10:53:44 PM
Chinese does it too.

I'm fully in favor of most-significant-time-unit-first, and propose we start right now on 2012-01-02.

I like this way, because is sorting friendly.  Grin

I can handle that. Just bear with some of us stupid Americans. Old habits are hard to break. ;p  Generally if I am communicating to someone about an important matter I make sure the date is unmistakable.
I.e., The 2012th year of our Lord, in the holy month of Janurary, on the 2nd day of his blessings. I kid, I kid
I.e., 2nd of Jan. of 2012    would be a proper date format on letter heads here in the U.S.  I do like having a more reconized standard when abbreviated though..

cheers
Hey, at least you Americans use a consistent system. Here, we have both YYYY-MM-DD and DD/MM/YYYY systems in common use: that's big endian and little endian. Then, there is "lazy format" when you use two-digit years. Here's a question for you: guess the date this represents:
Code:
05/12/11
2595  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: January 02, 2012, 10:41:03 PM
Does 5 posts mean 5 new threads, or just 5 replies within any thread?

Either.
To clarify, it means that the combined amount of new threads and replies to threads is 5 or more.
2596  Economy / Speculation / Date formats are annoying on: January 02, 2012, 05:51:16 PM
Also, the M/D/YYYY date representation makes me cry.  OP, please consider switching to the international standard for date representation.
It's even more annoying here where the common person uses DD/MM/YYYY format! I look at the date and automatically assume "tommorow".

I'm guessing the bubble will still be inflating in 2 months, so my guess is $22.00.
2597  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: January 02, 2012, 05:10:40 PM
i still don't understand why i still cannot post,reply any topic or pm to anyone else !

i have been here for almost ! 3 months !
You need to have at least 5 posts in the Newbie forum to post or PM. Currently (2012-01-02) you have 2 posts.

2599  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Islamic Bank of Bitcoin{}بنك بتكوين الاسلامي on: January 02, 2012, 02:18:19 AM
Senbonzakura, could you state the amount of BTC the bank holds right now, without including ones in assets like loans or stocks?
2600  Economy / Speculation / Re: Warning: bubble #2 might be forming on: January 01, 2012, 04:51:14 PM
I've already "acted upon it" by purchasing some more bitcoins. We now have further information that this is going to be a bubble, because the "correction" has now outpaced the previous bubble pop. The threads which have called for a major correction to the rally have all proven false. This is further assertion that when this rally pops, it will "pop all the way" (Nagle terminology).

No sign of an impending top yet... At this rate, we might be in double digits before the pop. Of course, the bubble will be avoided if a correction occurs immediately, but thus far there is no sign of that happening Smiley.
