1621  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BITCOIN SAVINGS & TRUST - Just when you thought Bitcoin was instant.... on: August 20, 2012, 04:57:27 PM
I think it's safe to say it's been a bit longer than 3 hours now....and I still haven't gotten my withdrawal request of 114 BTC.

I wonder what the problem could be ?

It's monday in your part of the world?
Its monday afternoon here, but that is unrelated to Pirate's monday

There is actually a pretty simple relation between your Monday and pirate's.

where's he, europe or US?

This time of year, pirate is UTC -5, in winter, UTC -6.  Central Time, US.

are most bitcoiners east coast US?
Central Time isn't east coast US, it's central US, so the East Coast shouldn't make up most bitcoiners. Assuming that most bitcoiners are in the American continent is also probably not correct, because many members of the lead development team are European. However, most bitcoiners are probably behind UTC time.

Hmm.  Those graphs do not appear to be averaged at all, or at best daily rather than 7-day.
The graphs are definitely averaged. Elux's graph above provides an unaveraged version that shows the raw volatility.
1623  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: August 20, 2012, 02:54:21 AM
Matt, I might have missed this but do I actually have to believe pirateat40 is a fraud or can I use this as a hedge? I'm in neither camp belief-wise and don't want to acquire either label.
Interesting. If someone else posts a double-or-nothing bet, but in the opposite direction, taking both bets equally is break-even. If someone posts a bet with better odds than double-or-nothing, arbitrage could be done to take an ensured profit (minus risk of default).

As of posting this, my coins (Final Payout Total) are due in approx 13-14 hours.

This came BEFORE the announcement.......

bitlane,

Your account has been closed.  Your funds will be sent to the withdraw address on file on Monday with the regularly scheduled interest payment.

-pirate
Monday is almost over in some parts of the world (a few hours left).

Well, good on you Matthew for doing this, but I must say I'm SHOCKED that none of biggest blow hards have even popped their heads in here (Vlad aside, and I assume he's not willing to put his money where his big mouth is as I haven't seen that quoted).

In fact, considering all the people posting about how this is definitely a big scam, I'm SHOCKED that so little have actually taken this bet.

(hint:  I'm not shocked).

Congrats,  you're all pointless keyboard warriors with no courage to back up your convictions.   Fancy that.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.  Respect to Matthew.

Though now how he determines which people have paid him to his address (assuming he wins) when multiple people are betting the exact same amount I'm not sure....

+1. Good point. I'll have to PM everyone with a different deposit address. (Why doesn't Bitcoin have a "memo" line yet?  Cry)
It used to, but it was removed because it bloated the blockchain.

You usually quote something when you witness it.

Just sayin.
Witnessed.

Should also sign it too, so the forum admins can't modify it.

And don't forget to take a picture of yourself posting it with a shoe on your head.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/ is a great place to explorer means of non-dictionary words.

Don't even have to go directly into Google anymore.  Just use your URL bar! lol.
FUD is a dictionary word.

There are a couple other red flags here. They don't have any public information, they don't have a TOS, their Facebook page doesn't exist or their Facebook link doesn't work, and the fact that their RSS only has one post. I suggest you do your due diligence before using icbit.se
So now only honest companies can create a page at Facebook ? Cool "red flag" Smiley
I don't see why we should ever register at some third-party completely unrelated social network.
The problem is that they have a Facebook link. Linking to a non-existent social networking page is a red flag.
1630  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Win up to 10000 BTC at btclottery.net - it works I won 0.1 BTC on: August 20, 2012, 12:32:16 AM
A multi-sockpuppet PR campaign:

1. Lottery is founded.
2. Sockpuppet 1 registers and posts about winning 0.1 BTC.
3. Lottery registers to announce "officially".
4. Sockpuppet 2 registers and posts about winning 5 BTC, but with some negativity.
5. Sockpuppets 1 and 2 are discovered.
6. Sockpuppet 2 defends self and begins complaining about non-payments with an intentionally weak argument.
7. The lottery is then made to look serious by elaborately refuting sockpuppet 2, while gathering support from community members due to sockpuppet 2's terrible stance.
8. Free bumps, and newbies visiting see "endorsements" by Hero Members and Staff.

Endorsements?
Telling the guy that a tx ID is needed for a complaint is an endorsement?
I still think the site is a scam. No, I'm not willing to play there to prove it lol
Not endorsements, "endorsements". To a sufficiently newbie newbie, they are endorsements.

Tentatively, I will perceive this event as a bubble. Once the next 8 days of data become available, I will be able to classify this event as either a true bubble or a major correction.

Fat Tay Choon went to the Mining Academy in Brazil, east of Satoshi's yurt, where Gavin was kidnapped by the CIA's goons and forced to pretend faking an anonymous decentralized biscuit—better than all the fish in the Pacific Ocean—but also to defray leeches intelligently with ECDSA fighting qubits for 16.8 dree12, or Phinnaeus must fling toilets towards psy‐ops, without potato smoothies mixed with fried chicken wings from BitMunchies.com, urbanchickennj.com, and Popeye's Bitcoin wallet, which deleted Satoshi's premine ability to very victoriously cheer none like Butterfly Labs better enabled, but also Pirate crashing AIR applications without

I decided to be bold and fix the grammar. Corrected "to (very victorious cheers)" to "to very victoriously cheer". At least the grammar is correct now.

Clarifications
  • Age is measured from date of birth. All categories are inclusive.
  • Please enter your gender at birth if you cannot classify yourself as male or female.
  • If you have more than one account, please vote with only one account.
  • Please vote as soon as you see this thread, so as to avoid bias in people crossing age boundaries.
Thanks for shunting everyone onto the gender binary. Not everyone identifies as 100% male or female.
I did try to avoid this.

Whatever Bitcoin's aftermath will be does not really matter. The point of Bitcoin is to offer a decentralized, fair, and cryptographically secure monetary system. To meet that primary goal, adoption by people from all kinds of cultures, opinions, and political views is necessary. It is not constructive to criticize those that support Bitcoin without supporting a socially liberal society.

It's funny, I thought the title was "Max Keiser - "Libertarians are Intellectually Lazy & Idiots"," not "Max Keiser - "Statists are Intellectually Lazy & Idiots""

You're scolding the wrong people.
I'm not scolding anyone, I'm pointing out that we shouldn't scold anyone supporting Bitcoin. Bitcoin is young, and all of its supporters should remain united in one principle: the support of Bitcoin.
1636  Economy / Speculation / Re: The shakedown on: August 18, 2012, 11:23:57 PM
I never exchanged a Bitcoin for fiat in my life and don't plan to start now.
Then why are you in the speculation forum?

When I was mining for bitcoins at a dollar loss, and said I was saving them for the day when they were worth more, we were told we were speculating on the value of bitcoin. And now we're told holding them long term is not speculation. You haters make up your mind already why dontcha?
There is no reason to mine at a dollar loss unless it is for charity.
apparently it worked out for him
Buying would have worked out better. In this case, he squandered further profit, but in exchange helped to secure the network. To put yourself in a financial loss for a common good is considered charity.

A very visible slowing of growth on this chart.

...and then the price goes up and what? lol

A slowing of growth suggests that a correction is in progress, but will not be too severe. A reversing of growth suggests that a bubble is in progress.
