1601  Economy / Goods / Re: Would you buy mexican food, tamales, homemade tortillas etc w/btc? on: August 23, 2012, 05:56:46 PM
Where are  you located? I live in San Antonio, so your competition is fierce. My wife is Hispanic and an excellent cook, as well, but it's just so cheap and easy for us to pickup home made fresh (as in, made a few minutes ago) tortillas from a number of places.

There are not a lot of places around here that will do that, but we are in Florida.
Does that mean shipping to Canada is not an option (or, prohibitively expensive)? That's too bad then.
1602  Economy / Speculation / Mt. Gox USD Last Week: Recap on: August 23, 2012, 05:55:20 PM
Wow, it's been a volatile week (decade, to be exact). After laughing my head off because of my long position during the 5 US$ to 15 US$ spike, then panicking (but, thankfully, not panic selling) during the ensuing bloodshed, I've still made off with a 100% increase in a matter of months (take that, Pirate investors). So, what happened this week? Well, something certainly did happen, and I'll recap the points that are most important to me below.

Prices: During the rally, the price momentarily rose above that of last year before returning to below that of last year during the correction1.

Volume: Volume in USD for 2012-08-17 was the highest of record for Mt. Gox's USD market. With more exchange decentralization now, this is even more of an accomplishment. 2011-06-08 held the previous record, and retains second for this benchmark. 2012-08-19 achieved 5th place for that benchmark. Volume in BTC was also stunning, with 2012-08-19 winning a 3rd place finish. The January rally still makes up the bulk of those records, however.

2012-02-08237943.12
2012-01-18226680.97

Volatility: Although the event brought volatility, the event was not as volatile as some others. The decade beginning 2012-08-13 brought six days with above average volatility, three days with average volatility, and one day with below average volatility2.

Conclusion: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Although I declared a bubble previously, I now retract that declaration. Luckily, only a correction seems to have occurred. But only time (or the manipulator) will tell.

Footnotes:
1 Based on open prices exactly 365 days apart, i.e. one day less than a year prior
2 Based on three equiprobable categories over two years of data.

Thinking of taking a page from bit pantry and putting the wifey to work, could I get some feedback, would anyone buy homemade tortillas, tamales and other dishes upon request? (Many of them would have to sit overnight to taste right anyway so sending them wont be bad on the food since it holds for a long time. Gimme some feedback on what you think plz.
How are you shipping them? Where are you located?

I'd be a customer if you are in Ontario and have a good shipping plan.
1605  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: August 23, 2012, 02:18:39 AM
Although I am not an investor in BS&T, my position is that there is insufficient evidence to declare a default, and the exit strategy so far is not indicative of a looming default or an elaborate scam set up. There are many reasons why I believe this to be so, but they do not belong in this thread.

As someone who had experience with a similar ponzi, I can tell you that this one is following it perfectly. The guy in charge continuing to communicate, claims that money is tied up in assets, apologies and attempts to get the money back, and very slowly paying people back from sold assets over the course of a few weeks, before finally collapsing. If this wasn't a ponzi, I'd like to know what business you can think of that can consistently pay 7%, or even 3% a week for a year.
I have posted my response here.
1606  Economy / Service Discussion / Why I don't think Pirate will default on: August 23, 2012, 02:17:51 AM
Disclaimer: I hold no financial interest in Pirate@40's endeavors, nor do I condone investing in shady 7% a week schemes.

I have personally retracted this statement.

I have recently been approached about my current position of Bitcoin Savings & Trust. While in the past I have remained fairly negative about BS&T, accusing the fantastical rewards as impossible and the entire business as a scam, with recent proceedings I have been forced to change my position. Although I refuse to accept that investors in BS&T have made a smart business decision, I am now forced to agree that the dice have turned their way and investors in BS&T will be receiving their full investments, plus interest, back.

Below is my rationale, point-by-point for structure.

  • Trusted operator: Pirate@40, although I have previously discounted this fact, is well-trusted in the Bitcoin community. This is both a white and red flag, admittedly, as investors may not have participated if a non-trusted member formed BS&T
  • Known operator: In similar vein, Pirate@40 is supposedly well-known among investors, having disclosed a factual name and picture. Admittedly, well-known Ponzi schemes have done the same; Bernie Madoff and Charles Ponzi not excepting. However, when the choice exists to be anonymous, Ponzi operators are likely to take it.
  • Continued communication: In an environment like Bitcoin's now, and building upon experience from Madoff and Ponzi, a true Ponzi operator would likely choose to fly to an exotic country and cease communication. Pirate@40 has done neither.
  • Payback: While all Ponzi operators have historically attempted payback when the operation is collapsing, the situation involving Pirate@40 is distinct in certain ways. The crucial difference here: Pirate@40 has closed the scheme himself. With the option of simply taking all the money and leaving, paying back a few investors is not constructive to his goals.
  • Financial incentive: At this point, with many PPT bonds in free-fall, Pirate@40 himself has the option of purchasing a large amount and reducing his debt. This gives him a financial incentive to repay his lenders. Additionally, Pirate@40 runs a reportedly successful business in GPUMAX, profits from which would disappear if Pirate@40 chooses to vanish.
1607  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: August 23, 2012, 01:51:49 AM
Someone isn't aware of how MyBitcoin was the largest BTC and USD value denominated hack/scam/theft of all time. If (and I consider this a very implausible situation) Pirate defaults on this, then it will be the greatest BTC and USD denominated scam/default, but still peanuts compared to a possible Mt. Gox disappearance (>1M BTC is in their possession).

Unlikely? many people are willing to bet on it. We will see how that goes.

I deem this case more of a turning point because this for sure would not a hack. This would be a massive breach of trust. I'm not sure many people would learn anything from it though.

Whatever happens this is going to be a turning point for the forums.

Disagree. EPIC FAIL full of lulz is fairly standard course for this forum.

Not this epic usually. This will pick #1 in the FAIL list, relegating Bitcoinica's fiasco to #2 (pending consequences to the people involved). That was a turning point and so will be this.

You forgot MyBitcoin, and MtGox crash and rollback.

That's prehistory in Bitcoin terms. The vast majority of the forum today wasn't around when MtGox crashed. MyBitcoin wasn't all that.

1609  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Membergroups; or: Why do some users get colored coins under their names? on: August 22, 2012, 04:40:07 PM
How does one determine whether a person gets the scammer tag?
They will only get a Scammer tag when when it`s obvious that they scammed.

I think if you are a donator, you can get a Scammer tag by requesting it from theymos.

Lol. Theymos should sell the scammer tag. There should be a "tag store" on the forums.
That isn't fair. Many users got it for free, why do I have to buy it?

1612  Economy / Lending / Re: A list of defaulted loans (list of scammers inside here) on: August 22, 2012, 01:50:58 AM
Pirate40 has defaulted to Bitlane.

Was promised payment yesterday
That default is a late payment, not a lack of payment, as bitlane will eventually get his money back (not at the promised time, but eventually). This thread seems to be for lack of payment.
1613  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Gamma Insured Pirate Pass Through on: August 21, 2012, 05:20:06 PM
There has been a default.  Pirate has defaulted.  That does not mean he will not eventually pay back.

Defaulted how?  Because he's trolling bitlane back?  The fact that he's winding down and is taking all of the week that he announced it would take?
Pirate has defaulted on bitlane, and thus far only bitlane. I don't see how this affects anyone else, so for the purpose of this PPT he has not defaulted.
1614  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Membergroups; or: Why do some users get colored coins under their names? on: August 21, 2012, 01:01:53 PM
There's a subforum that is only visible to donators.
And what is it for?

Whatever they want to use it for, it's theirs.
Thats not an answer.
The board, provided you have the necessary privileges to view it. I believe forum staff also do. Since I can't view it myself, I can't tell you what's in it.
1615  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] PIRATEAT40 and BTCST HAS DEFAULTED! on: August 21, 2012, 02:11:29 AM
Here is the link. Read for yourself. Bitcoins still not recieved per user bitlane:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=102079.0
Monday has yet to finalize in Alaska. Wait a few hours.

Judging by pirate's comments he may be choosing to default because of a huge ego issue he has. Read the thread. Bitlane has posted the PMs with pirateat40.
At this point, he may default. Until Monday has culminated over there in Alaska, a default is not certain.
1616  Other / Off-topic / Re: Has anybody start to locate pirateat40? on: August 21, 2012, 02:08:10 AM
No one ever found Tom Williams either.
Tom Williams is probably Shane Smith and located in Nanaimo.

There are a couple other red flags here. They don't have any public information, they don't have a TOS, their Facebook page doesn't exist or their Facebook link doesn't work, and the fact that their RSS only has one post. I suggest you do your due diligence before using icbit.se
So now only honest companies can create a page at Facebook ? Cool "red flag" Smiley
I don't see why we should ever register at some third-party completely unrelated social network.
The problem is that they have a Facebook link. Linking to a non-existent social networking page is a red flag.
Thanks, the Facebook link is fixed, though as [Tycho] said, it's not that this Facebook page gives any additional credibility. It's supposed to be useful for community and that's it.
As for RSS, I'm not sure what RSS you are referring to, but our Twitter is used on a regular basis to provide various news (you can have a look yourself: http://twitter.com/icbit_se).

Additionally, you can trace origins of ICBIT by searching forum posts here, which show the development process which began more than 1 year ago.

Any other Red Flags? :-)
This RSS that hasn't been updated in ages..

Anyways, I didn't realize that Tycho was working with icbit.se; that lends a lot of credibility to it. This information would probably need to be advertised. Too many of these websites with broken links and stock design turn out to be scams, which is why I doubted icbit.se. See, for example, MtGix, which has poor English, broken links, and a stock design.

Apologies for attacking your website; I should have done more research into the issue before judging the book by its cover.
1619  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Membergroups; or: Why do some users get colored coins under their names? on: August 21, 2012, 01:40:11 AM
Will the requirements for the donator or VIP status ever change?  As it stands right now $50 for donator and $500 for VIP is neccary. Perhaps subcategories of donators could be created to encourage donations? Many people will be hesitant to give 5 BTC but I'm
Sure more people would be willing to give 1 BTC to be called a mini donator Tongue just a thought...

The prices won't be reduced. They may be increased if the BTC price gets really low. Additional lower-price statuses may be created later. I don't want to manually deal with too many payments, though.
What if, hypothetically, a BTC becomes worth 5000 US$?
1620  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: told to kill myself on IRC? on: August 20, 2012, 07:22:12 PM
No one cares, nice or not nice has nothing to do with anything here.
The attitude in here is horrible. BitcoinTalk is itself known for its general rudeness, but the IRC channel has been polite the last time I used it. I can't believe it has degenerated that much.
