261  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why would someone continue to buy bitcoins over market value? on: July 11, 2011, 04:42:48 PM
If he's using paypal, he WILL get his money back if he initiate a dispute. A lot of paypal transactions are later reversed by the buyer, it's like a 100% no risk way of getting free money.

This isn't true. I used to sell software over PayPal, and the buyer doesn't get the money back by default. The PayPal side reviews the case first.
262  Economy / Speculation / Re: Just keep it in mind that there is someone has more than 10k bitcoin on: July 11, 2011, 04:36:54 PM
Keep in mind that there are people out there with more than $100 billion dollars, Warren Buffet for example. He can at any moment, use 0.1% of his money to boost the bitcoin market to $1000+ per coin. So hold on to your coins.  Tongue

He's giving it all away though.
263  Economy / Speculation / Re: Just keep it in mind that there is someone has more than 10k bitcoin on: July 11, 2011, 03:49:53 PM
I think we need a captcha to prevent these stream-of-conciousness threads. Similar subjects exist, have been 'debated' all to hell and back. This isn't bringing anything new to the table. Perhaps a timeout function and search? It could show that what you are about to post has in fact been done before, and give you about 10 minutes to think about it.

I know, who am I kidding - nothing works with the obtuse.

I think we need a downvote function like on Reddit.
264  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Well I've told you not to push the price up on: July 11, 2011, 03:43:03 PM
3 hours ago, someone is even as excited as willing to buy beyond 15$.

Not all the doubters have sold their coins yet. If you push the price up beyond 15, you're only make yourselves in a dangerous situation. I suggest we remain the price at this low level for a while, and let the price crash several times, and make doubters sell all their coins around 10-12$. Then we can move on to the next phase of rally. So don't buy at too high price, and always reserve some money for picking up the cheap coins.

based on the quality and frequency of your posts, i think you're trolling.

i'd like to bet you 100 BTC, to be held in escrow, that the price of BTC in USD will be higher than it is today one year from now.

That's not a fair bet. If you win, you get $1000. If you lose, you lose $10. (example numbers)
265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Well I've told you not to push the price up on: July 11, 2011, 03:35:30 PM
I'll buy when it hits $20 because that means the currency is going somewhere. If it drops to $10, I'll sell everything because it is evidence of a collapse.
266  Economy / Speculation / Re: Just keep it in mind that there is someone has more than 10k bitcoin on: July 11, 2011, 03:32:23 PM
Someone has more than 10k Bitcoin???  Shocked

It must be Satoshi.

Their Wikipedia article is being deleted... thanks to me. Also I had to battle the site owner to remove references to GSB from the main Bitcoin wiki page.
268  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Single address accounts on: July 11, 2011, 03:26:44 PM
Pick up any book on cryptography, open it to any page, stab your finger into any paragraph, and you will find a warning about key re-use.  We don't think that our current systems have any serious weaknesses in this department, but virtually every cryptosystem in history has been weakened and then broken because keys were used multiple times.

Best practice for security: use each key once, and only once.
Not best practice, but still pretty good: allow multiple uses, but discourage.
Worst practice: design a system that keeps using one key over and over and over again.

What if we don't care about secrecy with transactions?
269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Unit Colour Chart on: July 11, 2011, 03:06:24 PM
One tiny problem I foresee though is that some people seriously don't know the difference between:

$0.97
0.97 cents
97 cents

I've often seen people write 0.97 cents when they actually mean 97 cents / 0.97 dollars.

Very funny.
270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: USD *is* a virtual currency on: July 11, 2011, 03:01:20 PM
Im pretty sure banks have whatever amount of currency they got somewhere as "real" currency. Coins etc.

Are you visiting from the 1800s? lol
271  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How much does it cost YOU to produce a bitcoin? on: July 11, 2011, 02:48:05 PM
About 30 minutes at my job. (after tax)
272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need help! Ubuntu 11.04 wireless problems on: July 11, 2011, 02:16:58 PM
Excuse my ignorance, but does "sudo" work from within a script like that?

You run the script in the first place using sudo. That way it doesn't need to enter a password to use it, since it is logged in as root.
273  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who is mining namecoins and why? on: July 11, 2011, 07:12:35 AM
Honestly I was just asking. You don't have to be a jack-wagon.

I don't have to be anything, I just am, I'm a guy with a computer.
274  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Global Standard Bank - the first Bitcoin bank? on: July 11, 2011, 06:35:47 AM
Please change this to scam alert.

Done.
275  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you hate the State? on: July 11, 2011, 06:27:48 AM
Why is there supposed to be something wrong with dying when you get old?

how old are you?

you will discover that the definition of 'old' changes as you age.  no shit.  wait.  you'll see.

me, i just turned 60.  i feel the same as i felt when i was 30.  good genes though - so i can't take much credit.

but you go ahead and die "when you get old".  (or even before - are you a Who fan?)  i'm sure you won't mind at all, and will consider it to be an insignificant planetary occurrence.  or perhaps an honor for the greater good?

as for roads...  those little pathways in towns aren't roads; those are footpaths.  and the difference is clear.  one builds civilizations.  the other makes you feel safe in the night.

Wow, I would've pegged you at 30 - 35.

That's a great script. Thanks for sharing.
277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will never... reach either $5 or $20. Place your bets now! on: July 11, 2011, 05:21:40 AM
People who would bet on it reaching $5 don't even have any Bitcoins to put at stake... you wouldn't find anyone to take this bet.
278  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Global Standard Bank - the first Bitcoin bank? on: July 11, 2011, 05:16:50 AM
They might be able to pull in some people who know nothing about Bitcoins.
279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The New York Times on: July 11, 2011, 05:14:43 AM
I went to school in Amherst for 4 years. Great area.
280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Value At The End Of 2011? on: July 11, 2011, 04:43:58 AM
I really can't wait to see where the price of Bitcoin goes, and the social impact along with it. I think that right now is the calm before the storm, and June was like a gust of wind.
