261  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: {BFL} WHAT THE!! ButterflyLads WONT deliver the Monarch Till...ONLY GOD KNOWs?:( on: August 09, 2014, 01:41:53 AM
Approaching the middle of August and still not even a hint of shipping.  So when Josh was talking about hoping to ship out the Monarchs by the end of January, did he accidentally do a Quantum Leap and jump back to 2014 from the year 2016?
262  Economy / Digital goods / [WTB] Bitmain Antminer S3 coupon on: August 09, 2014, 01:09:13 AM
I'm looking to buy a couple of S3s and I would like to buy a S3 coupon.  PM me with an offer.
263  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: question on best pooling slush or btcguild on: August 09, 2014, 12:53:28 AM
I think slush is better than btcguild, there's been some shenanigans over at btcguild earlier this year. I moved my farm away from them and never looked back.

I can't fault a pool OP for some malfeasance one of the users was doing.  Similarly Eligius was the target of "shenanigans" but again the pool should not be blamed for bad users.

I started mining on Slush back in 2011 and then moved to BTC Guild.  I tried slush again for a 2 week period in 2013 and had a bad result.  Slush was not responding to user queries for over 1 month and I lost over 2BTC due to errors in the scoring system - he never bothered to respond to my PMs - something that you would never see with some other pool OPs like Graet of Ozcoin or Eluthria of BTC Guild.
264  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Considering a mining operation - need opinions on: August 09, 2014, 12:04:14 AM
You would need to have a PSU laying around to power it, but I assume you have one.

The biggest issue would be the heat and the noise.  It would put out around 300-400W of heat and is known to be on the noisy side, so you can't just hide it in some corner out of mind.

$120 is probably a bit overpriced, $90-$100 would be more reasonable since you probably won't make back $120 for at least 6 months.
265  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining bitcoin still rentable? on: August 08, 2014, 06:04:35 PM
And then there are problems importing anything into Argentina, aren't there?

Yes.  He said above he can't have miners shipped directly so he would have to "walk" them in  Wink
266  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Buying asic? on: August 08, 2014, 06:03:44 PM
I don't think you can determine how many miners there are out there.  All you can guess is the hashrate.  That hashrate is increasingly coming from large private mining pools that are owned by the ASIC manufacturers.  Go ahead and mine versus them - see who "wins".

I guarantee I can mine at a loss longer than they can  Cheesy

That's probably true.  Believers in Bitcoin mined even when they were at a loss just to support the network.  Most businesses have no desire to support the network and are only out to make a profit (at least the manufacturers judging from their lack of ethics towards the community).
267  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New to mining. Trying to get block eruptors to work on: August 08, 2014, 07:21:10 AM
It is being detected, but the last column shows Hardware errors under HW - it's 100% which means currently it's not functioning correctly.

The 2nd one is either dead or not getting enough power (cheap USB hub).  Try plugging it directly into one of the USB ports on the back or front your machine and see if it will work.
268  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: question on best pooling slash or btcguild on: August 08, 2014, 05:22:43 AM
Well if the NY State regulations do go into effect then BTC Guild will cease to exist, so if you mine there make sure you have auto payments set and don't use the pool as a bank.  Eleuthria is the pool op and has the community's trust, but should the gov decide to shut the pool down on a whim your coins may not fare well.

I believe he's stated that he would give ample notice if he were to close the pool... 30 or 45 days, something like that.

Personally if I were the owner of BTCGuild, I'd just move to a less restrictive country. You know he has to have some serious cash/bitcoin.  Wink

Eleuthria would give 30 or 45 days notice.  I doubt law enforcement agencies give you a heads up ahead of time so things could easily go sour quickly if a Senator happens to be moody that day  Cheesy
269  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What is up with the hashrate? on: August 08, 2014, 05:19:49 AM
Not to be too simplistic but the short answer is variance.

Just because the hashrate appears to be jumping around doesn't mean that it really is. Overall bad luck on the network can make it appear that the hashrate has dropped. And the inverse is true for good luck.

Further, network hashrate is just an estimate based on how quickly blocks are found. If a block isn't found every ten minutes, then the hashrate may appear to be dropping. And if blocks are found quickly, then the hashrate will appear to be rising.

I'm sure someone has a more eloquent and accurate explanation. I'm certainly no expert on the technical aspects of BTC.

You did a great job of explaining it.  Obviously there is new equipment added and old equipment removed, which has an effect on the total network hashing rate, but the swings of 40PH/s aren't caused by this.  Nobody, contrary to what the conspiracy theorists would have you believe, decides to turn on a bunch of hardware to then just turn it back off.

There is a very key statement that needs to be understood: the bitcoin protocol has no idea whatsoever the hash rate of the network.  It calculates an approximate hash rate based upon target difficulty and solved block time.  The formula is:
Code:
Difficulty * 2**32 / hashes per second = time in seconds to solve a block
Since we know the difficulty and the time, we can solve for the hashes per second.  As you can see, as time goes up and down, hash rate must also go up and down since the difficulty remains constant, at least until the adjustment at the 2016th block when the difficulty adjusts itself to make time equal to 600 seconds.

jonnybravo, so if I understand correctly (pardon me, I am not a math wizz), the quoted hash rates are basically reflecting the network "luck" to solve a block?  Would that be correct?

The quoted hashrates are based on calculations of how quickly blocks are solved.  The only person who knows how fast each miner is actually going is the miner who can view the actual MH/GH/TH/PH on their end.  The pools guess your hashrate based on how many shares are submitted.  The network guesses the hashrate based on the difficulty and how often blocks are solved.

If I told you I flipped a dime a number of times and got 5 heads, you would guess I tossed the coin 10 times most likely - similarly the calculations are done "backwards"
270  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Beginner miner, College, build vs buy? on: August 08, 2014, 04:57:45 AM
You could also check on eBay for used S1s.
Since electricity cost is not an issue, overclocked S1s will run at 200GH/s.
You can probably pick up 3 S1s and a PSU for ~$500.

Since my son is getting ready to go back to school, I'm sending along 6 S1s that he is going to run for me. We are splitting the BTC those miners earn 50/50.

Electricity is not an issue in the sense that he does not have to pay for it.  He can't suck down 15KW with the dorm infrastructure.  The S1s will put out about 800W of heat which is a lot more than S3s.  He can't just wish for the heat to leave the room, he would have to run the AC and hope the roommate doesn't get mad.

An S3 would be a better option in a small dorm.  In a large warehouse or garage an S1 would be reasonable.
271  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is a Bitcoin Whale? - The answer is here for the new people on: August 07, 2014, 08:13:01 PM
Total amount of coin dumped during that 102 drop was about 1300 BTC - the graph only shows the total volume traded on the candlestick and the color will be net result in price.  If he dumped 1300BTC there was also 1300BTC in buys - and some auto bot buying and selling which totals out to 4K.

It could have been a fat finger mistake or somebody trying to rock the boat.  A year earlier 4000 BTC would move the price $5 from $95 to $100  Cheesy
272  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: mining with smartphone on: August 07, 2014, 08:05:35 PM
I think it's impossible. I wonder how hot my phone if it possible to mining with smartphone. And sure the hash power is quite low if it possible using smartphone for mining.

With 2 Nexus 7, you can get ~4.7 GHs with easy miner. I heard that notion ink adam works with easy miner.
Kindly,
       MZ

Perhaps you meant 4.7MH/s.  A Core i7-4770K overclocked won't even give more than 1GH/s and I doubt the Tegra could beat a I7 even in compute.

BTW 4.7GH/s a day makes about 1 penny - totally not worth it to mine other than to know you can.
273  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is My Rig good for Mining? on: August 07, 2014, 08:02:09 PM
I was exaggerating when I said $30.  The CPU is worth about $75 used.  The RAM might fetch about $50.

Anyways the point is all that extra "useless" hardware can't really result in any coin production.  You could have a 5x5TB RAID array and a 30" 4k display and it still won't make any more coin than the base video card.

If the goal is to acquire crypto, downgrade the CPU and the RAM (sell them locally) and buy Bitcoin with it.
274  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Hi i am mert1337 on: August 07, 2014, 07:56:56 PM
Hi to everyone i am mert1337.New to this forum.
I knew the bitcoin existence when 2009.i tried to mine some bitcoins but when i try that my computer closes it self because i got a bad graphic card. That time i wasn't know things about computer and searching for easy money Cheesy This is the story of my first meet with bitcoin Smiley

Welcome to bitcointalk.

2009? I thought GPU mining wasn't there until mid 2010.
You could easily be a millionaire now if you started mining back then. Tongue

arkadasim merhaba. sirf seninle baglanti kurmak icin bu foruma kayit oldum. lutfen cevap yaz, email adresin, skype, facebook.. bana pm gönder lütfen. ben sana gönderemiyorum! dikkate alirsan sevinirim.

Don't really know what you are saying here. You may try the local forums https://bitcointalk.org/index.php#5.

GPU mining didn't really start for the masses until early 2011.  A few people were GPU mining before everybody else like ArtForz.  The runup in 2011 happened as GPU miners piled on.  Until 2011 it was pretty much CPUs.  Not sure what the OP was thinking.
275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is good? on: August 07, 2014, 07:54:34 PM
It seems mining altcoins (Scrypt) and Bitcoin is not profitable anymore.
You have to buy some Hardware to get some real profit.

If you buy dedicated hardware the manufacturer makes the profit and sells you a device that may not even break even but it's not their problem.
276  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Sanction against Russia for West-choreographed conflict in Ukraine on: August 07, 2014, 07:51:41 PM
The reason russia was importing food from europe was because it was cheaper the hike will be reflected in the people wallets.
Along with the 3% new sale tax that will be added next year.
And with the 6% yearly inflation.

Mainly because the damned WTO membership and various international agreements were ensuring destruction of domestic production.

The country is at war now, and economic one, but still a war. Russians are notoriously resilient when threat comes from outside (once again).

Because they never really leave a state of war.  When was the last time people in Russia didn't feel as if they're struggling?  Sure the rich middle class made out well in the last 20 years, but not many others.  It's hard to know sadness when you have never had the chance to experience happiness.
277  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Real Life in Texas 70 miles north of the Border... on: August 07, 2014, 07:47:20 PM
Notice how "our" president has tiptoed around this shooting of Vega.  Had the events been flipped 180 and 2 US felons ran south of the border and killed a Mexican national agent you can bet their embassy would be screaming at us night and day.

Why are none of the illegal immigration promoters defending these 2 Mexican nationals?  They are the victims! Roll Eyes
278  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Breaking: Obama considering airstrikes in Iraq on: August 07, 2014, 07:39:45 PM
But but I thought the Iraq war was over  Cheesy

This is turning into Afghanistan 2.0
279  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Would One Corsair CX750 be enough to power to Antiminer S3's? on: August 07, 2014, 07:37:21 PM
It can easily power 1 S3.  If you went for a little more powerful unit like a 850W unit you could run 2 S3s.  A high quality 450W Platinum PSU could run an S3.
280  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How much bandwith is my Antminer S3 using? on: August 07, 2014, 07:35:30 PM
Don't worry about the bandwidth throttling as even 20 miners still won't saturate even a 3G connection.  The issue would be latency.  If you're getting more than 1% stales then either try another pool to see if the issue resolves or you might consider getting a dedicated land connection if it's cheap.
