Vircurex was hacked and lost 1454 BTC in May 2013.

(they also lost 23400 LTC and 225263 TRC)

They also lost some on AurumXChange, and are currently short of about 1200 BTC:

Found a pretty funny ipo from one of garrs shill accounts:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134825.msg1435767#msg1435767

Seems legit

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=123654.0;all

I don't know how feasible it would be for Garr, but maybe he could pay his investors the equivalent they would have earned in a hypothetical situation with no fuckups on Garr's part.
2605  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoin section is out of control, expect even more bullshits on: March 20, 2014, 11:43:52 PM
Since i assume they are not getting paid, they have to at least get some gratification and fun.

Even better - the payouts are based on our activity, so the more topics we move, the more we get paid.

Fuck off also goes to moderator who moved this thread to Meta from Bitcoin Discussion. Let's hide from Bitcoiners info about potential threat, right?

Bitcoin Discussion board is not a "you can post and spam whatever the fuck you want because it's at the top of the page" board, but a board for "General discussion about the Bitcoin ecosystem that doesn't fit better elsewhere." Meta is for "Bitching Discussion about the Bitcoin Forum" (as the description says), so it was right to have this topic moved here.
2606  Other / New forum software / Re: Kick-off Discussion: Existing Forum Temperature Check + Criticism on: March 20, 2014, 11:21:12 PM
1.
- sometimes it's slow
- Handling/managing/searching through hundreds of PMs is cumbersome
- no 2FA/3FA/x-FA
- the default forum search (not the Google one) without selecting some options to narrow the search results yields in strange results (I think it's only a problem for new members). But it's still limited, for example I'm unable to search for "+1 posts" by searching for <+1> or <"+1">. Yeah, I know it's the same with google, but duckduckgo works OK with special characters (if one puts the query between quotation marks) and so does symbolhound.

2.
- Stats, though I wouldn't mind them being much more detailed
- Ignore button, ignoring PMs

3.
- Wouldn't mind the forum responding a bit faster to posting, handling reports, nuking users, etc.
- 2FA/3FA/x-FA
edit: also, the Trust system, as much as the concept of DefaultTrust is very far from being ideal, it's somewhat of a protection for newbies

4.
reddit - I don't like the layout and the voting/downvoting/karmawhoring, all which do not contribute or encourage meaningful discussions, but I like the idea of subreddits.
facebook - there's a joke of a chat... and that's it, not sure if it's something needed on this forum

Those are just a few that popped into my mind now, by no means a comprehensive list. Smiley
2607  Other / Meta / Re: I have lost my bitcointalk account on: March 20, 2014, 10:25:57 PM
If you want me to recover a hacked/lost account, you need to prove that you own it. Typically, the only acceptable method of proving ownership is by signing a message (including current date and desired new email address) using a Bitcoin address or PGP key associated with the account. A Bitcoin address or PGP key is associated with the account only if the account posted the key/address, sent it in a PM, or if it is still listed in the account's profile.

I very rarely recover accounts if you can't prove ownership as described above. There are alternative ways of proving ownership, but they take too much time. If I point you to this thread, you can't prove ownership properly, and then I ignore your future PMs, this means that I'm not going to recover your account. Create a new one.

Authenticating using an email wasn't mentioned so I'm not sure if it will suffice, but if you are unable to do it as described above, you can still try and see if Raize's method is enough.

Also, if I'm reading these posts correctly, you live in the NY area so your present IP should be from that area, presumably. I imagine a mod can get you fixed up.

Barring social engineering, mods can't see users' IP addresses. If you need/want to recover an account, contact theymos.

I report in a "Should be in "Insert subforum here" ". Is that fine or do I have to do it in another way? Also, at OP, if you really hate altcoins, just keep reporting them if they get out of the designated subforums.

It's fine because if one us visits the reported topic and sees it's in the right section (maybe moved by OP, maybe by another mod), we can mark the report as "Handled", otherwise we might mark it as a "Bad report" if the report comment says "wrong section" or something like that, and it was already moved to the right section (we may think the reporter erroneously reported the post).

Blockchain.info is very well connected so you could add some of the nodes they are connected to: https://blockchain.info/ip-log
Not at the moment Sad (but good tip, thanks Wink)

other pages also seem to be cached, though I only checked the first three.

What's a good way to connect to a large number of nodes? Is there some way I can get a list of nodes, preferably distributed all over the world?

Add addnode=<ip> entries in bitcoin.conf, or use the addnode=<ip> argument in command-line, if you want to connect to more than 125 nodes (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/src/net.cpp#L64), then I think you will need to change -maxconnections=<x> to something higher.

Usually it's hard to do with altcoin threads going around in the Beginners subforum. Are they even allowed there?

No.
2615  Other / Meta / Re: New rules and restrictions on: March 17, 2014, 08:06:20 PM
Thank you for considering this.
But as I said, it is not only about me or about you or about people with at least a little experience. It's about newbies.
We can treat people idiots because of their lack of experience. Myself and a lot of other peoples got ''scammed'' and lost money and time because of the shitty altcoins.
I managed to get some reticent people into cryptocurrency, but after all this bubble of altcoins, especially after the beginning of 2014, they are saying :
" This is all bullshit... this will never succeed... There's nothing serious... Too many coins here and there... Losing hours to investigate and mining worthless coins.........."
In conclusion, this is causing more harm than good. Stop thinking about only you, think about the future ! We can't base a good future with bad reputation, this is as simple as this.
For the implementation, making people pay to announce may be a good idea, but generally, some coins are backed by rich people that will pump it, so 0.2BTC is nothing for them.
But that's still a good idea that will filter a lot of lazy devs and reduce by at least 50% the problem

Tell your friends to ignore the altcoins altogether, and to concentrate on Bitcoin only.

Perhaps the allowed signature styling should change with activity score / membergroup. Like:
- Newbie: No styling (including links) allowed. Max 40 characters.
- Jr. Member: Links allowed. Max 100 characters.
- Member: Unlimited length.
- Full: Color allowed.
- Sr. Member: Size allowed
- Hero: Background color allowed

This is done, except that Newbies can use 50 characters and Jr. Members can use 150 characters. The style limitations are applied immediately, but the size limitations only apply when a signature is updated. Tell me if there are problems.

Hello all,

Lately, this part of the forum became a collection of crap and garbage, 5 altcoins coming out everyday, a lot of people being scammed, losing time and money, and it just continues like that without nobody reacting.
To create a new coin and posting it in the announcement forum, the developper/promoter must respect some standards :
- He must prove why he created it and what is the difference between this and other coins.
- He must prove that he will do something ( projects and all the blabla ) and not just waiting for dumping.
- He must prove a lot of other things (I'm not a professional in this domain, but I'm sure we can set a lot of other standards to respect).

Otherwise : DELETE the thread and BAN the dev.
They are the cancer of this community and all the idea of cryptocurrency, if we let them grow, they will just kill this.

It would be too much work for the mods if they had to check every single altcoin that pops up.
It would be better if people were charged 0.2 BTC to start new threads in the altcoin announcements board, but why should theymos bother working on to automate this (I'm not even sure if it's feasible under this forum software) if it would only benefit the altcoin community? Start your own forum or move to a different forum dedicated to altcoins or to your specific altcoin.

It would be even better if others simply ignored the scammers to disincentive them from creating new altcoins.
