2661  Economy / Economics / Re: What does a Free Market mean to you? on: August 08, 2011, 09:09:14 PM
"Free market" means no person or group has the right to force any other person or group to make any economic decision.  This leaves room for government involvement in a very narrow field - namely contract enforcement and theft and violence prevention/prosecution.

In practice, this would have a few key features:
- No minimum wage
- No taxation of trade or income
- No import/export restrictions
- No central control of monetary systems, no central bank
- No FDIC
- No "consumer safety regulations"
- No building codes
- No FDA
- No prohibition of substances
- No prohibition of voluntary action (incl. gambling and prostitution, etc.)

The United States of America is not even close to a "free market." It is a socialist/corporatist nation, not a capitalist nation (the fact that it's not as socialist as other places doesn't make it capitalist).

2663  Economy / Economics / Re: [Forbes] The Bitcoin Crash on: August 08, 2011, 03:01:37 AM
The fact that there are 300 million Americans who use dollars for their day-to-day transactions creates a floor for the value of dollars.

soon we learn where that floor really is

2664  Economy / Speculation / Re: What's wrong with this picture? on: August 08, 2011, 01:15:13 AM
US dollar is a mess, euro is a mess, the whole fiat world is a mess.
And yet bitcoin is in a continuous downward spiral?  Give me a break...

It's completely unrelated; Bitcoin is still way too small, untested, and "unsafe" for normal people to use.  It's like asking why WOW gold isn't reacting to the recent financial crises.

+1  This is it exactly. Bitcoin is too niche and "wierd" for it to have much connection with the international market movements (yet).
2665  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoins sent to a dead wallet address on: August 08, 2011, 01:04:42 AM
Don't worry bud, at least you learned the lesson with only a few coins. Be at all times extremely careful with this new system as it develops.
2666  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Network Hashrate down to 13.60. Any thoughts? on: August 07, 2011, 08:52:55 PM
Of course the least profitable miners will drop as price falls. More miners will join when price rises. Everyone should understand and expect that relationship- there's nothing wrong or concerning about it.
2667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EvE online should be a prerequisite to having BTC on: August 07, 2011, 08:31:16 PM
I think there's a lot of overlap between the anarcho-capitalist EVE online and the Bitcoin currency. Certainly, anyone with experience in EVE understands that they are first and foremost responsible for their own success and protection.

When Bitcoin wallets are as secure as EVE wallets, that's when we'll really see wide adoption.

That's interesting, and definitely a good sign.

2673  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin has failed. Could something similar possibly work? on: August 07, 2011, 06:23:14 PM
At this point, we can write off Bitcoin as a failed experiment.

Speak for yourself. I am not part of that "we."

Despite an onslaught of terrible incidents, hackings, frauds, bad news, etc., the Bitcoin protocol itself still hasn't shown a single flaw. The market price is higher than it was just a couple months ago, there are serious professional businesses blooming around Bitcoin, such as Ruxum and Bitpay, and even people who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoins (such as Bruce Wagner), have not abandoned this project at all.

Bitcoin is more valuable today than it was a month ago, or a month prior to that. It is getting stronger. Poor systems and frauds are being exposed and inoculated against. Every single payment I've made or received using Bitcoin has gone smoothly.

These are signs of a failed experiment?
2674  Economy / Economics / Re: What a great lesson for the FREE MARKET. on: August 07, 2011, 06:11:47 PM
Is the "great lesson" that people will tend not to use a service after it defrauds them?  Seems the free market works after all, no?

The problem is that we are so used to being scammed from our institutions on legal growns but with controlled trade that we dont know how to behave in a unrefulated market. We are dumbed down and are learning the hard way how to behave in a real market.

That's actually an excellent point.
2675  Economy / Economics / Re: Monday 8/8/2011 Judgement day for world stock market on: August 07, 2011, 05:49:38 PM
Yeah I think most people understood academically that there was a "looming threat of downgrade sometime in the future." But that is very different than it actually happening!! I don't think many were expecting that, even though it was long overdue.
2676  Economy / Economics / Re: APMEX not selling until the markets open. on: August 07, 2011, 05:47:24 PM
Yeah why in the world would metal prices fall after this debt downgrade??

And how exactly does the Fed keep metal prices down in any meaningful way?

2679  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here we go again ...now its Instawallet.org ? on: August 06, 2011, 04:35:49 AM
Never had any problems with Instawallet. Sometimes it shows more deposited than is real, but that gets corrected fairly quickly.
2680  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin expert/enthusiast needed for Agora I/O in late Sept. on: August 05, 2011, 05:52:50 PM
Dear Bitcoin Community -

I'm looking to find a Bitcoin expert/enthusiast to speak at the Agora I/O event in late September. Note that this entire event is held ONLINE and thus you can do it from anywhere in the world.

Personally, I think Bitcoin is to Agorism what gills are to a fish. It makes it possible. Indeed, Agorists everywhere should rejoice at this new phenomenon, and this event is a cornerstone of the community.

Message from the organizer:

Please come speak to the liberty community at the second Agora I/O free, online liberty unconference Sep 23-25, 2011. Do it right from the comfort of your own home over the internet.

Agora I/O is a twice-yearly un-conference where you'll find the greatest people, ideas and tools for advancing the cause of liberty. Our first one, in March, was a huge success with 70 speakers and 2,200 participants from around the world. Check out the mp3 and YouTube archives here:

http://agora.io/etienne/archives

Talks start on the hour from 9AM to 7PM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Sep 23rd, 24th and 25th and run for up to 55 minutes each. You can pick your own time slot(s)! Give a conventional talk, host a forum discussion, teach something, give a tour of your enterprise, play music - the time slot is yours to do with as you like.

This is easier than skyping! To participate, let me know what time slot(s) work for you and what the topic(s) of your talk(s) will be. We'll take it from there.

You can find more information on our website at http://Agora.IO

Please comment here on this thread or PM me if you're interested in presenting, or if you have recommendations. There is no excuse for Agorists to ever use fiat state currencies again  Wink
