One more thing.  I was at nearly 400 posts and now I got dropped to 56.

What happened?  Why did I lose 75% of my post count?  I'm back to Jr level.  I've had some serious family issues to attend to but just because I don't post for nearly 2 weeks shouldn't mean I lose most of my posts.

303  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin Foundation receives cease and desist order from California on: June 26, 2013, 07:23:44 PM
A headless solution for Bitcoin needs to be found.

Why would you want a solution when there is no problem ?

I see a problem.

Politically curious businessmen merged with Bitcoin developers in one head called TBF. Politically curious businessmen at least theoretically can influence the work of the devs.

Bitcoin is of a threat to the people doing business as governments. People doing business as governments have almost all the guns, all the rockets, all the prisons, etc in the world. It will be easy for them to target one head, if / when they ever decide to kill / slow down Bitcoin development.

Bitcoin development should be headless / leaderless, therefore uneasy to kill / slow down.

Gavin is the only developer on the Bitcoin Foundation Board. He's a great guy and I tend to agree with him almost every time he voices his opinion on something, but if he disappeared, Bitcoin development would continue and it would most likely continue in much the same direction it has so far. Someone else would step up to fill the "core developer" role and that person may or may not hold a position on the board.

I do think it's a good idea for at least one seat to be held by a developer so that there is always someone to give an informed opinion on what the protocol is or isn't capable of doing.

I've always believed the Bitcoin Foundation should be the public face of Bitcoin, sometimes acting like BurtW suggests (drawing fire from overzealous lawmakers and regulators) and sometimes taking on the role of a PR department, all the while doing as much as possible to provide the best possible environment for Bitcoin to flourish. It shouldn't be confused as part of Bitcoin, but rather as a guardian of Bitcoin.
304  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What musical item do you play? on: June 25, 2013, 02:55:49 PM
Percussion but it's been years.

Had a drumset during and after high school. Played in a few garage bands, had a handful of gigs though none of them paid (unless you count free beer). Haven't picked up a pair of sticks since my twenties.  Sad

You're a TBF member, what was said on the TBF forum? Is it just useless chatter like this thread or was there some hopeful news?

I know this wasn't directed at me but I am a member so I thought I'd answer.

Patrick did inform us that the letter was dated May 30th but was only received last week. He also stated that Jon wrote his piece before he could draft an announcement so he just linked to it on the BF forum.

Other than that, the discussion on that forum is basically this thread condensed into one page.
306  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin Foundation receives cease and desist order from California on: June 24, 2013, 08:53:45 PM
Is the foundation going to make any announcement about this matter to its members?
It's all over the news already so it hardly needs announcing, it probably needs an official response not an announcement, and I would assume the response would be after first taking legal advice.

It was discussed on the BF forum.

At this point in time, trying to improve the situation in USA and so many other places is much worse than doing nothing about it.

How so?

Rulers are counting with people taking action of some sort excluding just moving elsewhere. What happens if people move somewhere else or just
do nothing, literary, e.g. civil disobedience?

All you did was answer my question with a (rhetorical) question.

Personally, I would rather try to improve the situation than retreat from it.
310  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Devtome.com writers - your content WILL be used in ways you do no like on: June 24, 2013, 01:48:56 PM
According to unthinking bit devtome itself has plenty of pageviews now.  But it's not monetized because he/she "doesn't like U.S. politics" and apparently no one working with devtome can find a non-U.S. advertiser?

Operation Fabulous ads would take care of that.

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking to get involved with some of the devcoin stuff, the basic ideas behind it sound great. But the community surrounding it is pretty screwed up right now. The more I watch and research the less I want to get involved.

But not because someone might "steal" my work that I got paid to put into the public domain.

I feel much the same way. I've been meaning to investigate devcoin because it sounds very interesting on the surface but some of its more vocal supporters don't exactly inspire confidence in the project.
311  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin Foundation receives cease and desist order from California on: June 24, 2013, 01:06:25 PM
Is Peter Vessenes still the head of TBF?

He's the Executive Director, Chairman of the Board, and Treasurer.

Thanks, I never know how frequently these websites are updated. So, he's the one you want to google for info about what's happening.

He did announce that he will be stepping down but AFAIK he hasn't yet.
312  Other / Meta / Re: When is an Off-Topic thread TOO off-topic? on: June 24, 2013, 12:37:46 PM
From the moderation guidelines:
Quote
- Topics should not be pointless.
- Topic creation should not be annoying. There should not be too many topics about the same thing in a short time period, and individuals should not post too many topics. "Too many" depends on the quality of the topics.

Okay, that has got to be the most subjective set of guidelines I have ever read.  Cheesy
313  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-06-23 Forbes - Bitcoin Foundation Receives Cease And Desist Order From Ca on: June 24, 2013, 12:15:39 PM
This is big. Why is this news only leaking out now  Huh

According to Patrick Murck, the Bitcoin Foundation only received the letter last week.
314  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-06-23 Forbes - Bitcoin Foundation Receives Cease And Desist Order From Ca on: June 24, 2013, 11:34:57 AM
The government is confused, nothing to see here.

After reading the C and D letter, I am actually convinced that it's more of the boilerplate type that orgs like RIAA/MPAA throws at everybody "just in case", no substantial evidence of breaking any law/regulation is provided in the letter, neither any particular activity involving the Foundation that is considered illegal.

I agree. I have a feeling someone saw footage of the Bitcoin ATM at the conference and proceeded to mail these letters to anyone they could find with "Bitcoin" in their name.

How would these changes get implemented? What kind of a consensus would be required?

As far as I know when it comes to the sort of thing they're talking about the only way they would be able to do any of what they say is through blatantly illegal means like hacking or by taking control of the Bitcoin source code, since this is pretty much impossible to do I'm confident they have their heads in the sky and they're talking bullshit. What the Bitcoin foundation is are a bunch of self-appointed leaders who think they can become a Bitcoin central bank and I think I can safely say the majority of the people here don't give a flying fuck about them.

Implementing new features into Bitcoin is not illegal. The code is open source and anyone can add anything they want to.

Getting people to accept and use the code with the new features is a completely different story, however.
316  Other / Meta / Re: How many members are on this forum? on: June 24, 2013, 11:18:12 AM
Thank you guys these have all been great and accurate answers. How many bitcoiners are out there in general?

That's a completely different question. I would imagine that there are many more than post here. I started a friend using Bitcoin and asked him to make an account here. He visited the forum but said he never made an account because he really didn't have anything to say. He still uses Bitcoin and is addicted to the cupcakes you can buy with btc in San Francisco. Oh, and he's addicted to Seals with Clubs too. lol

Yes, that is a difficult question to answer. It often seems like bitcointalk.org is the center of the Bitcoin universe but I'm often surprised by how many bitcoiners I meet that rarely, if ever, visit this forum.

One could attempt to track visitors to all known discussion sites like the subReddit and other forums, but then you'd need a way to determine how much overlap there is.
317  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Introducing the Mt.Gox Trusted Vendor Program on: June 24, 2013, 11:11:51 AM
All the previous (and old) discussion aside, I cannot find a list of currently trusted vendors available on Mt.Gox Website. The way I see it now, anyone can put a logo on their Website and link to https://mtgox.com/press_release_20120705.html

How does this "improve confidence in Bitcoin businesses for consumers"? A consumer cannot easily verify that a business is verified by Mt.Gox as trusted.

Any update on this?  I found this thread because I saw a particular business claiming to be a Mt.Gox trusted vendor and I want to verify it.
btradeaustralia.com

Has MtGox really implemented a 'trusted vendor program' without any easy way to confirm?? Bizarre.

I had just assumed this idea had died on the vine. How odd that a relatively unknown site is chosen as a "trusted" vendor over any that Mt. Gox has a professional relationship with.

The design of the trusted vendor logo at btradeaustralia.com instills very little confidence, however.
318  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 23, 2013, 03:26:36 AM
Thank you
So now you need to be active for:
 - more than a year to be hero
 - more than six months to be senior
 - more than one month to be full member

I really like that

So do you have to have total login time of more than 1 month to be full member or just have been registered for 1 month to be full member? I am stuck at 56 activity and have a total login time of 7 days, 7 hours and 33 minutes and registered on 10 May. Full member requires 60 activity.

I saw a recent post of John K. in which he said he had been logged in for 100+ hours. Shouldn't he have been logged in for more than 8760 hours (365x24) to become a hero member? Or are there different rules for oldtimers? Undecided

The new membergroup limits work like this:
GroupRequirement
Brand New0 posts
Newbie(none)
Jr. Member1 post written over 4 hours ago
Memberactivity: 15
Full Memberactivity: 60
Sr. Memberactivity: 200
Hero Memberactivity: 400

Becoming a Hero Member requires posting an average of one post a day for 28.57 two week periods.
319  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Project "Bitcoin No Noise" on: June 23, 2013, 02:46:30 AM
Also, I know MNW is banned though not sure for how long.  I wouldn't expect him to be responding to stuff here anytime soon.

Sigh. With MNW it's always two steps forward, two steps back.

Matthew, I think it's time to admit you have a problem and enroll in Trollers Anonymous.

Phin, I'm glad you're investigating. I'm afraid I have to agree with you that Harvest Lots doesn't qualify... but not for the reasons you've given. What August does on his personal time shouldn't disqualify any organization he happens to be a part of. I saw no indication that Harvest Lots will be a vehicle to carry out any political agenda he may have.

However, Harvest Lots is not a registered non-profit charitable organization yet.
