I've noticed that the bitmonerod on Windows that I just compiled yesterday wants to start downloading the lmdb blockchain from scratch, even when I already have an up-to-date lmdb blockchain copy, synced using a previously compiled version of bitmonerod from around May 5th. What changes since then are forcing a fresh download of the blockchain?

This pull request probably, see the comments -> https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/pull/364

You should rebuild your DB after that update, but I don't remember seeing anything that makes the code do it by itself. So this still seems like bit of a mystery to me why it is happening.

The commit is this one I think: https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/commit/e5d2680094ee15889934fe28901e4e133cda56f2

Help please:

I would like to run a full Monero node under Windows 7. Unfortunately, I only have 8gb of memory available. Is there any build for Windows 7 that actually uses the new and memory friendly database? I really would love to run that node.

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero if you follow the readme at the bottom you should be able to compile it for yourself... atleast i did it for Win 7. And if any errors occur just join #monero-dev and i think they will be willing to help you out.

Thanks :-)

I will try myself first.

Btw, MSYS2 could not be installed into some subdir. It had to be c:\msys2 ... also, mintty likes to crash here and there.

Ok, it failed.. the documentation of how to use MSYS2 and build Monero under Windows needs an update and makeover :-(

More details would be helpful. It probably just seems obvious to me because I know what commands in that section are relevant.
It's too many little things, like missing packages, not working cmake, etc. The easiest would be to follow the various steps with a fresh msys2 install and see where things go wrong. It's quickly done; took me less than 45min.

Indeed, the repositories are unresponsive half the time. You just have to run the install commands a second (or third) time.

I've done "fresh msys2 install and see where things go wrong" multiple times, so it's not all that clear. Wink

Edit: mingw-w64-x86_64-unbound < that package seems to be missing in the latest msys, but you can build without it.

First of all: Thanks for your support and help!

That repo instability explains a lot. I try again later this week. Likewise, I'd like to cross-build Monero for Windows using a Ubuntu plattform. Is there a how-to for that available?

I think you can make with target "release-static-win64", but I've not tried it myself.

Yup, just hop on IRC, and we can help you compile yourself or point you to some semi-official binaries if you want.

Now computationally in practice I do think it would be harder to crack a Monero brain wallet, should such a thing exist, than it is to crack Bitcoin brain wallets, but they're still a bad idea.

I'd guess between 5 and 8 OOM, depending on how much you can increase efficiency.

It would be a certain waste of time scanning any CN (or stealth address) coin for brainwallets. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to start using one though.

If you designed your own derivation method, then you'd probably be safe, but it's rather dubious (to me) that remembering/storing that method PLUS remembering your passphrase would be preferable to just storing the seeds we have now. But hey, if you want to "grow your own", no one can stop you.

From poloniex, thought it would interest some of you here:

Ethereum ETH is now available for margin trading. http://ow.ly/QJOHG

Regarding speculation: I am wondering if the dump guy is done now (could be several guys, but his blatant market dumping makes him unique I think). I still have a hard time comprehending why one would dump with +5% slippage, whereas he could've set up some asks and patiently wait until they got bought.

Because he is mining with other peoples electricity.

Free money is free.

True. 80% of monero mining power comes from botnets. These people (mostly chinese) don't care about 5% - 15% price difference. I dont think this will change anytime soon Sad

It would be helpful if you could provide conclusive proof of this number, or even any proof at all.

As far as these theorized botnet miners dumping at any price, I completely fail to see how that's a bad thing at all. Their dumping at any price means the people who actually want to own them pay *less*.

miner != investor

can someone check my calculations on the value of BTC mining rewards.

12.5btc   10mins   6/hr   24hrs   365days   $268       = $1,760,760,000
25.0btc   10mins   6/hr   24hrs   365days   $268       = $3,521,520,000

Your decimal is wrong:

12.5 / block = $176,076,000 / year
25 / block = $352,152,000 / year

hey folks. Quick question, I have a few hundred XMR i have in a windows wallet. I can't bring bitmonerod up anymore, it kills my computer, so I need to move it to a linux laptop.

What's the best way to migrate a windows simplewallet.bin file from windows unix? delete the bin, and use the .keys file? I'm sorry, it's been a while, but I can't deal with windows anymore so I want to move it to ubuntu laptop asap. Wink

Thanks for any tips/help! Smiley

How old is the wallet? Does it have a seed?

The new daemon shouldn't kill your pc; you could try that too.

it's old, but it's 0886 on windows, i have the seed, but i'm not really into restoring from that, although I've done it before with no problem doing tests on cold storage.

I don't see any later versions than that, pre-compiled, so that's why I'm going to clone the github and build it. Wink

Yes you can build it on Linux or Windows. The memory requirements are quite small.

Importing the seed is essentially identical to copying the keys file. I think the files might be compatible between OSes, but not really sure.
330  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero Support on: August 11, 2015, 01:02:36 AM

IIRC, the LMDB is already merged to the master branch. Just compile from the latest commit -> https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/commits/master

Unfortunately I am not really tech-savvy, so can't really help you with your question. Also, if I am wrong in my above sentence, someone please correct me!

If so... then would bitmonerod compiled from master branch build and use the block database using lmdb if you sync from scratch, but would not if you bootstrapped for instance?

Thanks for help

I believe by default (with no switches) it'll select LMDB and ignore any current standard chain you have, meaning it'll start syncing from 0. I'm not at acomputer to check for sure though. Note: on a 50 mbps fiber connection today I synced from 0 in 47 minutes.

You'll also want to make sure you freshly compiled from today, as there's a very important fix to the daemon just merged.

...
As far as modifying PoW that is not on any active agenda. We've always open to the possibility and we've looked at cuckoo cycle and some other things but there aren't any current plans to change it.

That cuckoo cycle is interesting reading but from what I can tell it doesn't actually change the cryptography or am I having a comprehension failure? When I read the other thread I'll probably get the answer to that question. Smiley

Well it's "just" a POW, so has nothing to do with EdDSA, etc. It would replace Cryptonight.

Advantages:
1. Easy to verify
2. Huh
3. Cool name

Disadvantages:
1. Change is bad?

Change is inevitable. This hurts my brain. Smiley
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dga/crypto/cuckoo/analysis.pdf

The one thing this coin can never do is lose it's anonymity so being prepared and as future proof as possible should certainly be a focus.

Hmm, I hadn't seen that paper. I didn't read it fully, but it looks like he "broke" it to an extent at least.

The search for the "perfect" POW continues? Tongue

Edit: I *do* like the idea of a quicker to verify POW (while maintaining the other properties of Cryptonight [at least as I understand it in my very limited study]). Perhaps it could be added along with a change to 2 (or 4) minute block targets, which I'm personally in favor of.

Edit2: it looks like it may be worse for GPUs by a bit, so anyone with money invested in GPUs for mining Monero would likely be opposed.
335  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Give me a logical reason why Vanilla coin is not a top ten coin? on: August 10, 2015, 03:09:10 PM
My hypothesis is simple, it sends and confirms under a second, is decentralised and is anonomous. In the end that really what people want, ie send money instantly with no double spend, who wants to wait a few minutes to buy something?
Zero confirmation bitcoin transactions are perfectly safe to accept. Bitpay and coinbase already do this. There's no "waiting" for anything.

The awful name doesn't help either.

Well that's certainly not true. It depends on the use case and the transaction itself.

Bitpay and Coinbase accept the risk of 0-confirm transactions. This does *not* mean they're safe.
336  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Give me a logical reason why Vanilla coin is not a top ten coin? on: August 10, 2015, 02:52:52 PM
People are worn out from there always being yet another new coin claiming to be the next best thing - which they rarely are (not saying this VNL is or isn't). Kind of like crying wolf enough of times and people won't even bother checking them out anymore.

Yeah I get that. But I'm saying with all honesty that I'm simply asking the question. At the moment I see a coin that is respendable in a second and is anonomous, I'm not arguing it's going to become the reserve currency of the world, simply that possibly it deserves to be in the top 10 marketcap of alts?

like I said if people can explain the flaws in my thinking, I'm actually willing to dump what I bought. I can't be more transparent than that honestly. Some of us aren't shrills or FUDers but people simply trying to work out what is the real good stuff and what is the garbage.

Is there actually anything that says how it works yet? Open source?

Oh, and the name...

Thanks. So onward to next potential problem:

sudo apt-get install git gcc-4.9 cmake libunbound2 libevent-2.0-5 libgtest-dev libboost1.55-all-dev libevent-dev

Why boost 1.55 ?

(I am on Ubuntu 14.04 with libboost-all-dev (notice lack of insistence on a particular version) installed.)

I vaguely recall something I was thinking of trying wanted that version, not sure if it was Monero or some other thing. But normally this version of Ubuntu, and all the coins I have built so far (and I have built lots of them) are still back on an earlier version of boost, maybe 1.54 or somesuch.

Whatever it was that I previously ran into that wanted 1.55 I did not bother with, I think maybe I also ran into some warning somewhere not to.

What happens to all my normal builds if I install this new boost? Will they get compiled against it and maybe break?

Its possible one of them even specifically warned me not to go to 1.55, I can't recall quite what it was that led to me not bothering with whatever it was I saw before that was wanting to use boost 1.55.

I can't even recall if there was supposed to be a bug in 1.54 that necessitated using 1.55, or a bug in 1.55 that necessitated not moving forward to that version yet, or both.

Though everythign so far seems to be working normally while I have NOT gone ahead to this newfangled 1.55 thing...

-MarkM-

I'm fairly certain the bug was with 1.54, which happened to be the one in the standard Ubuntu 14.04 repository.

Ok, I did a bit of searching: from the first page of this thread, we find: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.msg6382457#msg6382457 which links here: http://goo.gl/RrCFmA

This was quite some time ago, so I don't know if it's still relevant.

Ok so I've only just found out that smooth is also developing another crytonote coin.

Question, is this more of a test bed for features you think maybe useful to XMR or are you working on it as a competing currency?

Of course you are free to do what you like with your time, just as a member of the core team for XMR it just seems strange.

smooth is a greedy low life, his shitcoin, aeon, is dead.

ROFL, good to have you back.
