3441  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do you think Bitcoinica should switch to TradeHill? [Edited] on: January 22, 2012, 04:50:09 AM
After reading about all the problems people have had at Tradehill depositing and withdrawing funds I think you should stay away from that exchange.

What are you talking about?  I withdrew all my funds today no problem.

You must not be in the US.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56599.0

Maybe not.  Is Illinois in the US?

Edit:  Then again, by funds I meant BTC.

Ok I'll bite.

Have you considered how difficult it would be for you to offer payment services?

You will have to have Dwolla available or I (and probably many others) will not be able to trade.

+1, and TradeHill hit the nail on the head with free personal checks by mail.

Dwolla + personal checks = Win

3447  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Backing up wallet...Simple Question on: January 21, 2012, 10:44:34 PM
Yes. But you have to do this every so often (every 100 addresses).

You mean I have to make a copy every 100 addresses that my client creates?  Not every 100 blocks?

I'm pretty sure I'm a lonnnnnng ways off from generating 100 addresses.

Yes. It will take a while. You could also use a parameter to force pre-generation of any number of addresses - although I wouldn't know how.

Awesome, thanks!

BTW if anyone else can confirm that'd be great.

Sorry for sounding mean or something - but it just seems fishy? i could be wrong of course and if i am i will make a public apology.

of course it sounds fishy!  But using escrow and directing the coins to a reputable member would restore my trust in him.  I have written this loan off as a default, but hope a miracle happens.

oh well Sad

I urge that nobody purchase anything from kujoking7, even with escrow, until he gets on Skype or Google Talk and answers my questions to him.

I'll offer to BE the escrow for a 1.5% charge.

the joint, thanks for your offer Smiley
Anyone else?

No problem Smiley  Let me know if I can help.
3450  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Backing up wallet...Simple Question on: January 21, 2012, 10:35:52 PM
I want to make a simple dual-backup of my wallet.

Can I simply do this?

1.)  Exit client.  Insert USB stick.  Copy wallet.dat to USB stick.   Remove and Store USB stick.
2.)  Email copy of wallet.dat to myself.

In the event that my wallet gets corrupted or lost, I can simply reinsert the wallet.dat back into the roaming/Bitcoin folder and reload the client, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Smiley

After setting up my new rigs, I have some parts I'd like to sell.  All prices will be listed without shipping.  Shipping costs will vary depending on where you are and how many items you want.  I prefer US customers, but international shipping is OK assuming you pay for it.

If you don't like the price, make an offer and I'll see what I can do.  The best way to make an offer is to state the price at which you would like the item(s) shipped.  I prefer payment in BTC or equivalent in Dwolla.  I expect payment up front.

1.)  ASUS 6970 2 GB.   Very solid card.   It has run beautifully without any problems and kicks ass at gaming.  I ran it at 3% reduced voltage at stock speeds.  The card has never seen over 74C and has been running consistently in the mid 60's.  Be advised, one of the fans barely nicks against the heat sinc when you first start up the card.  But, once you let the fan run for about 5 minutes, the fan re-positions itself and no longer nicks the heat sinc.  Asking 40 BTC.  Sold!!!!

2.)  EVGA 1 GB GTX-550ti.   Awesome gaming card for the price.  The thing is practically brand new (only used for 1 week of gaming).  It even still has the protective plastic on it!  Asking 16 BTC

http://tinypic.com/r/2eumwjc/5

3.)  ATI Radeon 5550 1 GB.    Almost never used!  Asking 9 BTC

http://tinypic.com/r/2z4ihdw/5

4.)  Mid-Tower Case that came as part of a Tiger Direct desktop bundle.  Asking 8 BTC

http://tinypic.com/r/n3klcp/5

5.)  400W PSU that came as part of the same Tiger Direct desktop bundle.  Asking 5.5 BTC

http://tinypic.com/r/s1ujw1/5

6.)  MSI 785GTM-E45 motherboard.  I have two one of these.  Asking 9 BTC

3455  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ben's Outlet WTF - Paid for 5870, got 5850 on: January 21, 2012, 07:22:20 PM
The single 5870 I ordered from them arrived in the same cardboard box without any documentation.  Definitely refurbished, but in very nice condition.

Fortunately, the thing runs beautifully.
3456  Economy / Goods / Re: IPad 1 16GB in great condition on: January 21, 2012, 05:34:38 AM
I'm always skeptical about IPads and other electronics sold by people with low post counts.  It seems like 9/10 IPads sold by those with a post count under 50-100 are all scams.

I'm not saying you are a scammer, but I would recommend offering to use an escrow service or finding a trusted forum member to act as an escrow.  This way, a buyer can send BTC to the escrow without worry about losing it all.  Then, you would receive the BTC as soon as the buyer has received the product.

Good luck!

Can't change the rules midway through the game?

Gee, where have I heard this argument before...

Last time I heard that argument it did not apply.  This time it does.  I really can not believe you are reminding people about that low point of your life.

Next time I'll add a smiley face to emphasize the intended tone of my previous post.

A little smiley can go a long way in avoiding conflict.

Where's the Bitcoin porn site again?
3460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitTalk.TV Interview with Zhou Tong of Bitcoinica.com on: January 19, 2012, 09:13:13 PM
With the big drop we just had I think my question is more relevant than ever.

Changing my opinion on Zhou after watching this manipulation...

I will not be using bitcoinica, and I have lost NO money, but I can see how this is hurting us..

+1  It's too early for the market.  Or at least get rid of the high leverage options.

-1

All that happened was a few uberbulls got taught a lesson, and a few shorters got fucked as well on the rebound spike up.  Saw the upspike coming when the * popped up on the sell side down at 5.2.

We now have a higher portion of traders who are capable of not overleveraging themselves.  This is good for bitcoin.

+0   I understand the point and I think it is good that people have the option to use Bitcoinica (after all, it's a free market right?).  I also think people should be able to use drugs if they wish, but that doesn't mean that people using drugs is good for society.  It's good to have the choice, but not necessarily good to exercise that choice to commit to action.

While I don't consider myself a pessimistic person (I actually am one of the greatest optimists you can find), I do not trust the Bitcoin community in general to be careful with a Pandora's Box like Bitcoinica.  By careful, I mean responsible -- I don't trust that the majority of people are aware of the potential impact that their individual actions can have on the entire market.

My main problem is that it aids in pure speculation.  Bitcoin is treated by most as a gambling opportunity first and an evolved social development second.  But, Bitcoin's intended purpose was to be an evolved social development first and a gambling opportunity, well, never (at least it isn't implied in the white paper).

Basically, I'm just saying that the motivation that drives many users into Bitcoin is antithetical to the intended purpose of Bitcoin.  Of course, one could argue this by saying that it's in alignment with Bitcoin's intended purpose simply because Bitcoin is used.  I think at a certain level this is true, but at a systemic level it is not.  All systems require balance to achieve homeostasis, but Bitcoinica really fucks with the balance of systemic input and output.  It's a threat to destabilization.

are you the same "the joint" who was whining about "old engineers" betting scheme and pumping up "phantomcircuits" mistake?

are you kidding me?  well said Man.

Thanks?  Smiley
