3501  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trying to figure out if my physical bitcoin is loaded with digital bitcoin on: November 29, 2019, 10:16:52 PM
Unless it has a sticker or hologram on it displaying a "public" key or address (with a hidden private key under the sticker/hologram)... Then I doubt very much that your coin is "loaded" with anything... and is basically worth whatever a collector would want to pay for it.

Based on @rhomelmabini 's link... I'd say that would be around $5 Wink
3502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Non-spendable Bitcoins and Imported wallet address on: November 29, 2019, 09:49:39 PM
I am in same situation with cromtontech.org and i believe it to be a scam. They say you were refunded and are just bitter but I believe you mate. I haven't deposited anything because they are talking rubbish and won't fully explain what they are trying to do.
You're right, it is most likely a scam. The site is completely fake... This is the CromtonTech "team":

The "Co-Founder" is a John Doe pic from a website template by the looks of it... check the results from the Google Image search for his profile pic:

Same with the others:

DO NOT send these scammers any money!
3503  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: GreenAddress Login Problem... Does anyone else having issue? on: November 29, 2019, 09:37:44 PM
Sad Now having confirmation delay issue, when I even used "bump fee". It's almost 6 hrs now transaction hasn't confirmed and I can't hope the transaction to confirm maybe for another 6 hrs.  Angry
It's the usual story... you've just hit a bad patch of a LOT of transactions... the network is busy right now:

There are around 30,000 unconfirmed transactions. So, depending on your fee it could take a while to get a confirmation. Undecided

If you hover over the bottom graph "Mempool size in MB) here: https://jochen-hoenicke.de/queue/#0,24h
You can get an idea of where your transaction is effectively sitting in the "queue".
3504  Economy / Reputation / Re: Is morals not needed? on: November 29, 2019, 01:51:16 PM
Sometimes, I observe too many insultive, abusive, foul words as responses of people to many post,
Welcome to the Internet... you must be new around here Roll Eyes

You need to realise that not everyone has the same moral compass as you... and some don't even have moral compasses at all... As I was fond of telling my ex when she would get upset because she couldn't understand why people would say and do stupid or mean things... "Everyone is not you".

Some people are nice, some are asshats... it's no real different than any other facet of life... it's just easier for people to be asshats online because they think they're anonymous and untouchable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
3505  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Game-Protect.com did not refund my money and stopped replying to my emails on: November 29, 2019, 01:42:20 PM
... and not based on brain wash nonsense shit! Cheesy
And yet... that is all you spew in pretty much each and every post you make on this site. "Nonsense shit".

Your silly semantic games and "fingers in ears"-type denial of reality don't make you right... and you know it. But no doubt, you'll wait a few more days... give everyone another round of red trust for being "brain dead", claim you "don't make contracts"... and "only accept donations"... and that you "refunded h4ns" by ever so graciously deducting that 210 euro from the amount you're magically claiming as damages in your made up little defamation fantasy...

Here's some truth for you... that isn't a refund. It isn't even close to be being refund. Since you're so fond of definitions:

Refund
verb (used with object)
- to give back or restore (especially money); repay.
- to make repayment to; reimburse.

You didn't give it back or repay it... therefore... NO REFUND has been made. His claim is good... as is the flag.

So, stop making yourself look like a twat with all your stupid games and arguments and just give him his 210 euros like you promised you would in the email you wrote to him (which by the way... in spite of your protestations otherwise IS classified as a written agreement).

Don't bother repeating all your "nonsense shit" about contracts and donations and refunds... we've all seen it... multiple times... and it's still just as incorrect as the first time you posted it.
3506  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet receiving address changed after update on: November 29, 2019, 01:19:32 PM
After I updated it to latest revision (3.3.8 ) receiving address changed. Why?
Most likely because the latest version is working "correctly" Tongue Wink

The older version *should* have been changing the address as well, but it didn't always work properly... with the newer versions, the wallet will give you the first "unused" receiving address (where tx == 0) that it finds in the list... once it has been "used" (tx >= 1), an address should not automatically show up on the "receive" tab any longer. If it was already on the receive tab and the address receives a transaction, and then you go back to the receive tab, it will be highlighted RED to warn the user that it has already been used. If the wallet is subsequently closed and re-opened, that "used" address will then be skipped and the first unused address in the list will be shown instead.

However, as TryNinja said above... any and ALL of the address(es) shown on the "Addresses" tab will remain valid and can be used at any time.
3507  Economy / Reputation / Re: Please tag! on: November 28, 2019, 11:34:31 PM
It's obviously a malware that steals bitcoins from your LBC accounts
More likely... the Firefox Addon will simply modify the "deposit" address displayed to the user to display an address belonging to the thieves. They don't even need to steal the coins from the users LBC account, because the user will simply end up sending them directly!

It is essentially a slightly more "polished" version of the LBC deposit address changing scam using TamperMonkey/GreaseMonkey script that was doing the rounds recently...
3508  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Generating a paper wallet securely on: November 28, 2019, 11:31:36 PM
This discussion really highlights the need for professional services in protecting the BTC of the non-techie.
That's not how "Be your own bank" works... Asking someone else to "protect your BTC" pretty much goes against the entire ethos of Bitcoin. Roll Eyes

It seems that you're basically suggesting "custodial" wallets as a solution for non-techies!!?!

In my mind, the solution is education, but that generally requires someone who wants to learn. Bitcoin has a steep learning curve... but there have been advances away from the complicated process of generating and using paper wallets securely or attempting to setup an air-gapped machine etc. For instance, a hardware wallet offers most of the benefits without the complicated procedures and are generally easy to use.

Likewise, there are desktop wallets available that offer the ease of use and nice GUIs of web wallets... but ensure you maintain control of your private keys/seed mnemonics and don't require full blockchain downloads.
3509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: help needed in blockchain analysis on: November 28, 2019, 10:46:18 PM
All the information should be on the blockchain, and you should only need the TransactionID from the transaction that moved the coins from Wallet A to Wallet B...

This should show the change address(es) that had the coins left over from the 175 BTC. It should be a simple matter to follow back from that (A to B) transaction to see that those change address(es) are indeed from the 175 BTC transaction.

Not sure why you would need a "pro" to show that? Unless there were a number of transactions inbetween "175->Exchange" and "A to B"? Huh

3514  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How important is it to generate private keys from Ledger wallets? on: November 28, 2019, 10:35:52 AM
Got it! I was thinking that the golden rule "If you don't own the private keys to your coins, you don't own them." applies to all wallets.
It still does... it's just that wallets that use "seed words" derive all their private keys from those seed words... so as long as you (and ONLY you) have the "seed words"... you still control the private keys Wink

Copied Post:
Bitcoin prices recently reached a six-month low, having declined more than 50% from their 2019 high of almost $14,000.

After suffering this pullback, has the digital currency’s price bottomed out?

While many analysts are unsurprisingly bullish in the long-term, many of them are less optimistic in the short-term, emphasizing that the cryptocurrency could easily suffer further losses.

Market observers offered these predictions after bitcoin fell to nearly $6,500 on November 24th, its lowest since May, before recovering, approaching $7,400 the following day, Coin Desk 2local figures reveal.

[Ed note: Investing in cryptocoins or tokens is highly speculative and the market is largely unregulated. Anyone considering it should be prepared to lose their entire investment.

Bitcoin ‘Overbought,’ Says Analyst

“We don’t see $6.5k as the bottom, although it’s the first strong candidate for that title,” said Tim Enneking, managing director of Digital Capital Management.

3516  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [suggestion] Shamir plugin on: November 28, 2019, 05:12:01 AM
One could probably argue that the security of the backup is increased... as without the minimum number of pieces, you can't access the seed mnemonic and restore the wallet. (assuming the pieces are stored separately in safe and secure locations etc)

However, I would agree that the overall security of the wallet is essentially the same if it was all done (wallet creation + shamir split) on an online machine.
3517  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium: Transaction signing failed on: November 28, 2019, 04:59:47 AM
So what I think now is, did Mycelium get stuck in choosing which input address (bc1q1xxx/bc1q2xxx) to sign the transaction and displayed an error? Clearly both address had the required funds to move.
Impossible to know without seeing the logs from the application. The "Transaction signing failed" error is a relatively generic error that doesn't really tell you much other than the app was unable to sign your transaction Undecided

Why it was able to sign the transaction when you spent BOTH UTXOs in one transaction, but could not do so when you were just spending ONE UTXO... I guess we'll never know. Undecided Huh

Given some of the "syncing" issues that Mycelium users have had since the latest update... it's possible the app was simply unable to confirm the UTXOs were "valid" so the creation/signing of the transaction simply failed... and then by the time you decided to try sending everything, it was able to sync OK and confirm the UTXOs were valid, so the process worked fine. It's also possible that Mycelium doesn't work like this at all and will happily sign transactions containing invalid UTXOs Tongue I'm not very familiar with the underlying codebase to be honest.

I imagine attempting to troubleshoot this would be very difficult as it will not doubt prove to be hard to replicate the issue!
3518  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet Backup questions on: November 28, 2019, 04:38:36 AM
so with the seed phrase, that would restore the extended private key which would then restore all my addresses?  but not any addresses i imported (not that i have any), is that right?
seedphrase seems reasonable way to store a backup off-line
Bitcoin Core doesn't have a SEED Phrase.
You can get the master private key from your dumpwallet file if your wallet is "HD", and yes, it will restore all of your address using a client that supports "master keys" if you've selected the correct derivation path.
Or get the keys using tools like iancoleman to get all of your private keys from it to be able to import to Bitcoin Core.

IMO, for Bitcoin Core, it's for the "last resort" in case your wallet.dat got corrupted.

As noted by nc50lc, Bitcoin Core does not use "seed phrases" aka "recovery phrase" aka "seed mnemonics" aka "12/24 words" etc... The closest you can get is the "hdseed" value in the 'dumpwallet' output. Displayed in a WIF format... you could theoretically use this to recreate your wallet using this 'hdseed' WIF key and the "createwallet" and "sethdseed" commands.

Again, this will not be able to restore any imported private keys... it will only be able to restore addresses that were originally generated from the seed... and it also means that you've potentially exposed your unencrypted private keys and hdseed by having to use the 'dumpwallet' command to find the "hdseed" value in the first place.

Keeping (multiple) copies of the encrypted wallet.dat is really the best solution, in my opinion.
3519  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet Backup questions on: November 28, 2019, 03:00:23 AM
1. dumpwallet:  can someone point me somewhere that explains what exactly i am looking at in the text file? i see wallet addresses and i guess private keys. what is meant by reserve and script? and why is an entire block of addresses repeated?
Basically the private keys (and the redeem scripts for your P2SH/segwit addresses)... Basically, this is why you see the block of addresses repeated... one block shows the private key... one block is the redeem script.

reserve = "receiving addresses"
change = "change"
script = the redeem script for the displayed address

Quote
2. backupwallet: is this the same as just copying the wallet.dat file directly to another location?
In short... yes. It is also the same as the "File -> Backup Wallet..." option in the GUI. It basically just copies the wallet.dat to the specified location.

Quote
3. what is the best back up method? should i do all 3? dumpwallet, backupwallet and seed?
In my opinion, the best method is to simply backup your wallet.dat (either manually or using the 'backupwallet' option). It's simple, quick and effective. Your private keys remain encrypted with your wallet passphrase... they are output unencrypted if you use 'dumpwallet'... and if you have an "HD enabled" wallet, you will be able to recover everything by simply restoring the wallet.dat and loading it up in a fully synced Bitcoin Core instance.

Worst comes to worst... you'd be able to load that wallet.dat in an unsynced Bitcoin Core and run 'dumpwallet' anyway.
