Electricity consumption is an hard matter
Access to ASICs is restricted and not for the mass of peopl.
If we want to have real consumers to produce coins with their GPUs and CPUs, the road is not this one.

ASICs producer produce devices for their pockets, not convenient at all to  the general public.

Cheap electricity leads to geographical areas that have big probles of "regulations" and i do not know how serious they are.
The market and the goal of the white paper is too huge to leave it to under developed geographical regions of the world just for economic convenience.

Another problem is the centralization of power in the hands of few companies. Many companies from various nations, mining in China or Syberia is not a real problem. The core problem is a single company mining all over the world.

Implementation of new ideas is highly recommended.
I see equihash algo is generating new coins that are mineable from home GPUs and CPUs, creating real communities of real people.

The problem is, if it can be mined with GPU's, it will sooner or later end up in specialized hardware for the task, no matter what algorithm you use, at the end of the day, it's just chips in a GPU, and they can be built upon an specialized machine that will be more efficient. GPU's are using resources for things unrelated to mining, so that power can be allocated to 100% mining in hardware.

Needless to say corporations could in any case stake massive amounts of GPU's rendering the average personal computer miner out of the game again.

I have been waiting to join for a while, since I've seen on the spreadsheet some guys didn't post enough, but looks like the manager no longer looks at the thread. Does he only look at the discord?
368  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why does Bitcoin keep using SHA256 in its POW? on: April 20, 2018, 03:40:25 PM
Changing SHA256 on live Bitcoin Network is extremely complicated but not at all impossible. The above posters already described the process in details more then enough to satisfy one's curiosity. I would only like to add that necessity of any improvement should be always taken into consideration. In case of deeply rooted into Bitcoin's architecture hashing algorithm it would be very unwise to change or even plan changes unless there is absolutely critical to do so. It's like upgrading perfectly good foundation of a skyscraper - it can be done, may even improve future performance, but hardly worth the effort.

Theoretically, it's not impossible as you can think about game theoretical scenarios in which doubts about SHA256 would arise, such as the NSA-NIST conspiracy of a backdoor being somehow true, or somehow the curve gets simply cracked by quantum computing (how else could you crack it anyway?)

Both scenarios are sci-fi, if you think about it.

Therefore the ultimate fate of Bitcoin is being stuck with SHA256, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as we keep seeing improvements in competition in the mining game. DragonMint is a new hope in mining competition, for instance. Other than that, thinking there's going to be achievable consensus to change SHA256, is in my opinion a waste of time.

Quote
The obvious advantage of switching to ASIC resistant algorithms would be promoting decentralization as more people would be able to enter the mining process with "normal" hardware.
Again, what is the real sense of your meaning of decentralization? If you are talking about [more or less] fair coin distribution - just use (a kind of) random distribution. Otherwise, if there is any feasible way to increase one's part of [coin-]cake - one will always do so.
Wouldn't it be good for the stability of Bitcoin's network to have numerous small miners scattered throughout the world rather than a couple of big miners centralized in those parts of the world where electricity is cheap? Wasn't that the original idea back then in 2009? I believe so. But I also get the reality of this mining business and I know that what I'm asking is probably unrealistic. People with big money will always find a way to game the system.

Looks like satoshi didn't predict mining pools, which are the cause of centralization, not the actual specialized hardware.

Showing my interest to join in here, since I almost made it last week. Im still wearing the signature and avatar :p

I have extended the cutoff time for posts from 00.00 CEST to 06.00 CEST Friday morning. This is to give everyone a chance to have the cutoff after midnight in their timezone. This means that the cutoff is aprox. 8 hours and 10 minutes from now.

I also have to stress that I want every participant to join discord for the simple reason of information like this not having to get posted here and for you all to read etc. Join and take a glance at it every now and then and we are all good!

First payment is being sent out tomorrow. Hope you all will have a good weekend!

I think you should keep this thread updated too with relevant info. Some hardcore Bitcoin users hate flash/javascript stuff and prefer simple websites like this, because of the big surface attack on websites that require javascript.

Sweet

I'm glad I can remain in this sweet campaign Smiley

I to surprised that your in this campaign.

It looks like some of you guys are acts of the selector and that's why he has taken you.

Look at your post quality - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=337097;sa=showPosts

I checked the first couple of pages and didn't find any quality posts. I think selector need to explain on this member selection.

Yeah, I would like to know why I wasn't accepted, considering I think some of the accepted posters are worse than me (no disrespect tho, just saying, but some can't seem to speak proper english).

In any case, im interested to take any spots may someone leave/get kicked from the campaign.

373  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ethreum or Bitcoin? on: March 27, 2018, 04:41:10 PM
The only use case for Ethereum thus far is the issue of Initial Coin Offerings, other than that I have not seen anyone running smart contracts on the regular through the Ethereum platform or smart contracts period. So far there aren't many use cases for it, and I believe Bitcoin will eventually overtake Ethereum with sidechains.

At some point most altcoins will be irrelevant, which is why Bitcoin is still the one and only long term hold in crypto, everything else is a gamble.
374  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will never reach $5,000 again. on: March 27, 2018, 04:37:36 PM
Im here waiting for lower prices ready to buy cheap coins, but I think we may not go below the long term resistance line that comes from $1800 throw high $2000's until the $5890 ish bottom, so we are doing fine.

If I had the gamble I would NOT short, it would be an insanely unnecessary risk, just get some fiat ready for some potential discount in bitcoin prices. Sooner or later everyone will FOMO back in again. We are going much, much higher in the next decade. This and 2019 are the last years to try to accumulate as much BTC as possible, after 2020 it will be near impossible to make even 1 BTC a year anymore for most people.
375  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin in a bubble or just getting to it’s true value? on: March 26, 2018, 05:55:06 PM
Bitcoin is an adventure of constant price discovery, if we get to a certain value, some people start considering if that is a viable value or not, then we get some people panicking which is what creates these waves.

Of course nobody can't deny the market's invisible hand. There is a big war happening for the control of the Bitcoin supply and TPTB are constantly plotting to shake the market out and then once it goes to the ground a new rally will begin. It is a mixture of both phenomena. Half of the market is controlled by big players, the other half will or not follow the market marker signals. But what is clear is, Bitcoin will never die, so after admitting this fact, there's only one thing to do: control the supply, in other words, shake out all the noobs and own as much BTC as possible.
376  Other / Meta / Re: Wakawaka account hacked on: March 26, 2018, 05:35:52 PM
Can I do the same with btc?
Lol...Dude, this is not a bounty campaign. ROFLMAO.

A what?
I guess he is asking to submit application for a bounty campaign...Lol.

I think he is asking if he could sign a message with a bitcoin signature instead of ethereum?... that's what makes sense in this context.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S88ciN9DsRk

You can search a result for your respective wallet. If your wallet doesn't allow you to do this then it's a shitty wallet and you must use one that does.
377  Other / Meta / Re: What is pgp security? on: March 26, 2018, 05:25:45 PM
Many people find easier to use bitcoin addresses to identify themselves because their first experience with cryptography as a whole was bitcoin itself.

Why should someone bother with learning PGP if you already got your own bitcoin node to use addresses to identify yourself? Is there any advantages or disadvantages?

Doesn't PGP depend on some servers hosting the keys or something? Honestly I never used it, im doing fine with BTC signatures.
378  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin preparing for a bull run?? on: March 26, 2018, 05:13:57 PM
Zoom out and watch. The price is consolidating, we will retest the long term resistance line and we'll start a the new bull run for the summer.

We have TONS of idiots that got in during the big $20k bubble which we need to get rid off. Once only true believers are left we'll stabilize, then everyone else that is stupid enough to not own bitcoin yet will (once again) FOMO back in into the market for X reasons, most likely trade wars, QE and other shenanigans which will make BTC the obvious place to be. Also lightning network is coming and in 1 to 2 years you'll be able to use Bitcoin to buy anything you want instantly and free. Anyone not holding at least 1 BTC by now has brain for bricks.
379  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: G20 Sets July Deadline for Crypto Regulation Talk on: March 25, 2018, 11:52:07 PM
I guess we will have yet another round of FUD by July 26. I predict we will be seeing good prices in June, and they will come up with some retarded FUD regulations to feed the panic sellers with, they will set shorts, they will make a lot of money, and they will steal panic selling idiot's BTC once again from their shaking hands. Basic procedure.
380  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Double Citizenship. What to do when joining ICO Illegible is 1 of the countries on: March 25, 2018, 11:30:27 PM
Im not sure about this, ask the ICO team hosting it, but you must also check for any existing laws in both jurisdictions.

If I had to guess I think the relevant citizenship will be the fiscal one (namely, the one in which you are paying taxes at, and if you are paying in both countries, the one where you have the highest taxes paid, higher real estate networth... etc). But again I dont know how that works specifically.
