381  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyway to "Cold Storage" USDT ? on: April 23, 2017, 06:05:09 AM
I haven't really used this feature in the past but I noticed that with Poloniex you are able to withdraw the USDT. Since the price is very high at the moment, was wondering if its possible to withdraw this, keep it in cold storage somewhere? Since I don't want to keep large amounts in exchanges where I don't have the private key.

Searching and Googling doesn't really provide much info, and the technology seems pretty new still.

Wondering if someone can give some input.

A normal bitcoin paper wallet generated in all the normal secure ways will work fine. Send the coins to that wallet address.

When you want to spend them then download and sync up the Blockchain with the Omni Layer full node and import the private key.

Yep, you can send any Omni/Counterparty asset to regular Bitcoin cold wallet and later retrieve it by restoring the private key. I have done it before and can confirm it works. Smiley
382  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Critics Against Steemit on: April 23, 2017, 03:35:52 AM
Because of the critics , steemit should crawl with low prices.

I don't think it is the critics that are at fault here. Steem set themselves up for the well deserved criticism.

Whether it be the sketchy instamine-like month long PoW launch in which several insiders gained a huge percentage of the tokens, or the flawed economics that make up the Steem ecosystem. Both are valid criticisms.
383  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: About the USDT on: April 23, 2017, 01:26:08 AM
Why is the price below 1 USD?

Who knows...

It looks like this is the furthest away from parity it's ever been ($0.937359). We shouldn't jump to conclusions, but hopefully the Tether company is not having economic difficulties.

It is interesting because according to the internet sleuths it supposedly has some ties to Bitfinex. I guess we'll find out just how closely they are related if Bitfinex goes bankrupt, because Tether is sure to implode as well if Bitfinex is the main operator of it. If they are the main operators of Tether, then it could explain why it has come away from the $1 peg. Bitfinex's present business issues are well documented in recent news articles.

Even more interesting... take a look at the Tether all time graph on Coin Market Cap. You will see it has only strayed away from $1 once before- it dropped down to $0.96 for a short period of time. The date is the interesting part though, because it happened on or around August 12th. Guess when Bitfinex was hacked last year for a loss of 744,408 BTC? August 2nd... just 10 days before Tether came away from $1 for the first time. This can't be a coincidence... can it?

I hope for the people who own Tether's coins' sake that that is not the case.
384  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin SegWit will be activated in TBD on: April 22, 2017, 12:26:06 PM
It is puzzling to me that Segwit support is still under 75% even after the super secret China/LTC developer summit where they supposedly all agreed to support Segwit, Jihan included.

Furthermore, it kind of irked me that Charlie+ other LTC developers seemed to promise Jihan that they would increase the block size when it is half full. He does have enough power and sway within the LTC community to make sure it happens, but it is practically declaring Litecoin is an oligarchy with Charlie and the Chinese cartel pulling the strings. I understand he was just doing what needed to be done (compromising) to get Segwit activated on Litecoin, but it still doesn't sit quite right with me. Bitcoin is better in these regards, as there is not one single person with that much sway within the communtiy since Satoshi dropped off the face of the planet.
385  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: About the USDT on: April 21, 2017, 07:15:34 AM
Is it like a OpenAssets protocol? What are the differences between OpenAssets and OmniLayer?

Hmm, I have never heard of the OpenAssets protocol, but after a quick Google search it looks like it is a colored coin implementation.

That is exactly how the Omni Layer works too. It is a colored coins implementation. The Omni Layer was formerly known as Mastercoin, and it started here on the forums: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=265488.0

Quote
There is no contractual right or other right or legal claim against us to redeem or exchange your Tethers for money. We do not guarantee any right of redemption or exchange of Tethers by us for money. There is no guarantee against losses when you buy, trade, sell, or redeem Tethers.

That is very perplexing.

Indeed. That is pretty crazy. Effectively they could walk away with everyone's USD and stop enforcing the peg at anytime. The language in the ToS may or may not hold up in court, but it would be hard to get any money out of them... a long legal battle would drag on.

I don't see how they can enforce a ToS when no one has technically accepted it. You know, when register for a web site and have to manually check the box to accept the terms of service? I'm not sure if the ToS holds any weight since no one technically accepts it when they buy or sell it on an exchange.
387  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: About the USDT on: April 21, 2017, 05:33:07 AM
can i run an usdt full node? how?  Huh
is USDT based on a smart contract?

You can transfer USDT to your Omni Layer wallet. USDT is an Omni asset, and there are not smart contracts. The peg staying at $1 is dependent on the Tether company buying it and selling it for such.

There are a few wallets... hosted ones where you own your private key, and also Omni Core that you can download. With the latter, you have to download the entire blockchain and it takes a long time. I'd recommend the former.

Well there is NXT that does tokens as well.

KMD Dex will use atomic swaps and not IOUs  Wink

It is hard for me to take Komodo seriously, or more specifically jl7777.

He has started about 100 crypto projects, all of which he asked for and received funding, and he never seems to finish any of them.

https://nxtforum.org/nxtventures/

Is like a graveyard of failed projects...

Bitcoindark
Supernet
InstantDEX
NxtCoinsco
Pangea
NxtPrivacy
PrivateBet
ATOMIC
Skynet
NeoDice
Omnigames

I am probably missing a few too... Were any of these actually completed as advertised? Some were completed to the point of being barely functional, but I wouldn't really count that as truly following through and protecting his investor's best interests. If history tells us anything, then Komodo will be much of the same.

389  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Zeth - Discussion on: April 21, 2017, 04:12:44 AM
That's too bad. How much BTC did they raise?

I saw this project when I was looking for a signature campaign to join. I almost joined the Zeth campaign because it paid decent, but then I looked into the project. I found it odd that they were running a signature campaign during the ICO phase of their project. I thought it was almost as if they were more interested in collecting money in the ICO more than getting their name out there. It rubbed me the wrong way and I decided not to participate in their signature campaign. I guess my gut reaction was correct. Sorry to people who lost money... ICO scammers are the worst.
390  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Next big thing? on: April 20, 2017, 08:19:16 PM
An investor-centric alt coin that:

1. Is deflationary. Pretty much all cryptocurrencies are either inflationary or have neutral inflation. Deflation will help the value grow as long as demand stays steady. See: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1858954
2. Has utility via useful smart contracts which helps create and maintain demand. Gambling-focused smart contracts would IMO prove the most lucrative.
3. Has a DEX.
4. Has on chain methods to hedge against volatility of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Think.. Bitshares-like smartcoins that track the value of the USD, Gold, Silver, S&P Index, Blue Chip Stocks, etc. There is also a way to setup these smartcoins where they earn interest from trading fees, which will create more incentive for people to buy them. Also ways to create liquidity that have been unexplored yet proposed in the Bitshares community. They have chosen to let liquidity grow naturally, but there are ways to jump start liquidity.
5. Connects other blockchains together
391  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares vs Waves Platform on: April 20, 2017, 12:38:43 PM
Both Waves and Bitshares use IOU tokens

Actually, you made me realize that my description of Bitshares is selling it short.

Yes, both Waves and Bitshares use IOUs. But Bitshares has both IOUs in the form of Open Ledger tokens and derivatives in the form of Smartcoins. The latter is much less like an IOU than the former, because its value autonomously secured by smart contracts on the blockchain, and IOUs are secured by gateways using multisig addresses. There's a big difference there.

I agree Blocknet is probably the most decentralized, but it is still a ways out. Initially you will need to download the full blockchain of the coins you trade until support for SPV wallets is integrated. That could take a while. Then, it will still struggle for volume once it becomes a reality. It takes DEXs a long time to ramp up volume. Bitshares' current volume took 3 years to build. https://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/bitshares-asset-exchange/

I can't find any market data on Waves' exchange...

They all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Only time will tell what option will win out, or if a new one will emerge that crushes all three of them. Smiley
392  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares vs Waves Platform on: April 20, 2017, 05:05:24 AM
On the Waves DEX you trade IOUs setup and stored by a gatekeeper which utilizes multisignature addresses, and you can deposit/withdraw actual BTC, etc., but the trading is done in IOUs. Since you are trading IOUs, there is the chance of default. It has a nice easy you use and pretty wallet, and decent volume for just being released earlier this month.

On the Bitshares DEX you trade autonomous derivatives that use free market dynamics combined with price feeds to track the value of their real-life counterparts. There is some systematic risks involved with Smartcoins and you need to (at least temporarily) go through gatekeepers to get on and off the exchange. It does have decent volume though, and can handle more transactions per second than almost any other coin.

On the Blocknet DEX you trade the actual assets with no intermediaries (BTC, LTC, etc), but you will have to download the full blockchain of each coin you trade on the DEX and have each wallet running simultaneously. It is still in alpha, available on the test net only, and will probably not have any significant volume for some time.

Pick your poison.  Cheesy
393  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NobleCoin[NOBL] - 8% PoS | 1Yr+ | MARKETPLACE | PAY | GIFT | CHARITIES/MERCHANTS on: April 20, 2017, 04:38:53 AM
Yeah, this sucks...

Hopefully NOBL gets picked up by another exchange. I think that it will, because it had volume these past years. Maybe not a ton of volume, but there is probably some profit available if you put it on your ALT coin exchange. Polo is too big... they can't afford to keep low volume coins going when there are others that would probably more profitable (more volume). I just wish I would have been around for the announcement. It got dumped fast... I also held NSR, and it is the same story with those too.  Cry
394  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTR] vTorrent - Share with freedom | 2FA | HD | @Bittrex on: April 20, 2017, 03:47:33 AM
There is not enough volume to go to Polo. There are a lot of coins that aren't on Polo, yet have higher volumes and market caps than vTorrent.

The dev needs to produce a working wallet, until then... I agree that the efforts to get this coin on Polo are futile and unnecessary.

makes me wish i bought more

Me too! I guess hindsight is 20/20 though. Crazy pump going on now. It will be interesting to see if it can be sustained or not.

Now that I have a little bit more understanding of how the DEX works, I am not really that bullish on this project anymore. The way I understand it, it requires everyone to download the full blockchain of each coin they want to trade. How inconvenient... If that stays a requirement, then I'm not sure how big this can get (as far as volume/liquidity on the exchange).

The hardest part about DEXs is getting volume and liquidity on them. Up-thread there is mention of not wanting to go the multisig route with oracles hosting the wallets, because it is not fully decentralized. Although I agree it is not fully decentralized, I think for a DEX to work you need to compromise as far as decentralization and ease of use. I still think this project has some room for growth, but I don't know about its near term viability. It could be a decade before any decent volume is being transacted.

Bitshares, InstaDEX, Supernet, etc. have all struggled to gain decent liquidity/volume after garnering a huge amount of hype and a large market cap (all of those were as high as #2or #3 on market cap list at one point... well maybe not Supernet, but it was pretty high up there too). I kind of feel like this project is headed down the same path.

I will keep my Blocknet coins, because I want a DEX to succeed, but I hope the convenience of trading is addressed.
396  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Poloniex delisting 17 Altcoins on: April 19, 2017, 01:28:11 PM
Dangggg. Woke up to huge losses on NOBL and NSR...

I was thinking about selling my NOBL and buying back in a few days after it was done being pumped the past couple days. I didn't pull the trigger though, because it still has a low market cap and could pump even higher. Should have pulled the trigger.

Oh well. They are a very small % of my portfolio.  Smiley
They're delisting coins from their exchange. Not from your wallets right ? If your coins are saved on their wallet, they'd still allow you to take it out before locking the wallets ? You can anyway trade them at other exchanges. No ?

You should pull the trigger now!

You are right. You can withdraw them if you like, and trade them on other exchanges. I opted to sell them, as they will go down further as others find out the news. Maybe I will buy back in for cheaper, but really a delisting from Polo is kind of like the death sentence for a coin. So, I decided to sell them. Smiley

398  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's about time to turn off PoW mining on: April 17, 2017, 01:19:14 AM
so within a couple months the game would be back in the hands of the big players.
so forget changing PoW based purely on distribting the rewards, because that will never happen
I think eventually, once the technology evolves enough, using biometrics to create cryptographic fingerprints could be leveraged to prevent centralization and to make the system more fair. That is probably a decade or two away from being a realistic possibility though.
399  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's about time to turn off PoW mining on: April 16, 2017, 11:45:39 PM
Anyone still think full PoW mining is great?

Yes, its the best we have at the moment(Bitshares and DPOS was a massive failure) ... perhaps it is normal for the economic majority to occasionally need to revolt against the tyranny of a mining cartel with a new PoW algo.... perhaps Jihan is merely bluffing and the fear of the nuclear option will prevent him from attacking... we will see in time

I am interested why you think dPoS was a massive failure? It has worked fine for about 3 years, and many new alts have forked it as well.

What would be the difference in blocknets cross chain p2p tech compared to the lightning network?

For that question, I will defer to the experts. 😂
