MSI RX 480 8GB (OEM AMD w/o backplate) burnt itself to death all of a sudden.
42  Economy / Speculation / Re: Old hands, what is your current engagement level? on: August 11, 2017, 10:19:47 PM
Not sure if I fit in the category of old hands (bought my first coins between $20-$25 back in early 2013), but I am mainly focusing on trading my coin count up, as I have always been doing - nothing changed in that regard. Bitcoin is the only asset I have in my crypto portfolio, and that's more than enough. What do I need shitcoins for, when I have the Gold on top of the Gold already. Smiley I swallowed a large loss due to the BTC-E shutdown, but I am destined to gain everything back with trading in the coming years. For now, that's my only priority.
can you suggest a simple trading formula to increase BTC count?

It's called shaking of the tree, to remove weaklings.

Bitcoin passes $1,000 but only number that matters is zero
Cryptocurrency trading not even a rounding error in the world of modern finance

YESTERDAY by: Dan McCrum
In case bitcoin crept into your consciousness during a quiet first week of the year, because the price of the so-called cryptocurrency has passed a notable round number in dollars — $1,000 — most questions about the technological curiosity can be answered with another easy to remember figure: zero.

For instance, the Bank for International Settlements estimates the amount traded daily for the world’s 180 or so recognised currencies. Last year this ranged from $4.4tn in dollars, down to $1bn for the 37th most actively traded, the Bulgarian lev. In this context, the sum of bitcoin transactions rounds to zero.

Another measure might be the collective value of bitcoins, which stood at $16bn on Tuesday according to Bitcoin Info. Currencies aren’t normally discussed in terms of their overall worth, as they are supposed to be mediums of exchange rather than some absolute store of value. Still, for context, the Central Intelligence Agency put the planet’s stock of broad money — notes, coins, and various forms of bank account — at $82tn as of the end of 2014.

On the CIA figures, the value of bitcoins hashed into existence is similar to the broad money total for Uzbekistani soms. With apologies to Tashkent, the value of soms and bitcoins, and the number of people for whom they are relevant pieces of information in the world of modern finance, both round to zero.

Treat bitcoins as an investment and even if they could all be sold today for $1,000 apiece, they would only be worth as much as the Cerner Corporation, a US company of moderate size and limited profile involved in the management of digital healthcare records.

Except treating bitcoin as an investment means it can’t be a currency, and vice versa. The problem is that a medium of exchange prone to collapsing or quadrupling in price is useless as a practical currency, whatever the cryptographic elegance of its creation.

As a phenomenon bitcoin has all the attributes of a pyramid scheme, requiring a constant influx of converts to push up the price, based on the promise of its use by future converts. So the ultimate value for bitcoin will be the same as all pyramid schemes: zero.

45  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: December 14, 2016, 07:50:28 PM
Well, I hope the R4 I found is legit. Just bought one, so I guess I'll see if they actually have it IN HAND in the USA & will ship it within 10 days...

Antminer R4, 8TH/s Designed for home use.NOTE: We ship the miner after 10 days
http://www.ebay.com/itm/162307697540

The seller has sold Antminers in the past, both used and a new one with positive feedback, so hopefully I'll have a new R4 to start mining with in about 2 weeks. Had to pay a premium price, but if it will be months b4 the next batch comes out, I'd rather have one now & hashing so it can pay for itself sooner rather than later when the difficulty increases.

People are paying $2000 USD for a batch 1 so you didn't pay too much.

Good to know. Thanks dogjunior.  Sure hope I actually get it.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread since others here are expecting theirs to come in this week.
Hope the R4 Batch 2's can be overclocked to 650 like the Batch 1's. We will see.

Well dogjunior, things are looking up. Looks like they actually shipped my new Antminer R4 today! Coming from Michigan to Florida.
Scheduled FedEx delivery date is Fri 12/16/2016. Hopefully this Batch 2 unit is a good one that runs cooler & not like some that run over 100.
Guess it's time to pick out a Digital Wallet, and a Pool. I've read that it's a good idea to shy away from AntPool since they are approaching a monopoly, so I'll try to find a good one that doesn't charge a fee & has a decent web console to see stats, etc. I'd like to belong to a pool that is able to send e-mail or text alerts if my miner goes down, or is not hashing normally. Any ideas?
Hope to be mining soon. Thanks all for your help & information. Cheers!

My R4 arrived today. It's up & hashing in kano.is pool @ slightly over over 8TH/S.
Looks like I got lucky and have a cool running unit on both boards.

Has anyone flashed the stock shipping firmware on the R4 Batch 2 to the firmware provided for download on the bitmain site?
Firmware on website as of 7:55 PM 12/13/2016

If so, have you noticed any differences? Better or worse?
Thanks all.
Yup flashed my R4 with the new firmware from Bitmain's support site. Did not notice any substantial changes in hashing speed.

Is there somewhere else to signify that they are out on stock of the R4's, because it doesn't indicate out of stock on the BUY Now link..

Thanks all!

47  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: December 06, 2016, 12:15:16 AM
Just thought I'd update here on my repair process with my Batch 23 Antminer S9.
It arrived last week and this week 2 boards stopped operating. I contacted bitmain and was told to return the unit to Hong Kong as per usual. After I complained about the shipping cost being too high bitmain offered to cover the return shipping. So far I must say the service is excellent and did not expect this from bitmain due to the high complaints about warranty. I was pretty shocked when they said they would pay for all round shipping. Great service so far and really gives me hope that they still care about customers.
I hope other people dealing with repairs get the same treatment as this

That is stunning  I have never read this from anyone but you.

I'd assume people would usually want to keep it on the down low but I felt the community should know. If you would like proof I'd be happy to provide it to you in a PM Philip. The reason I won't provide it here as it has sensitive information but will be happy to show it to a trusted member.

Edit: I've purchased 18 Antminer S9's in the past 2 months so maybe that has something to do with it ? I don't know just an idea
Did you receive your repaired S9 back from Bitmain? How long did the repairs take?

I know most folks don't really take stuff apart, but can someone confirm whether or not the new-batch S9 boards have the U2 digital potentiometer populated? The ones I've looked at from older batches don't, and I haven't seen any adjustments in voltage during startup so I wonder if these aren't made for a fixed core voltage. The new ones look to be adjusting voltage on the fly, like S7 boards should have been capable of, so either they're doing something unexpected or that dpot should be on there.

Can you send a pic of the board and the part, so that it's easy to locate U2. Thanks
52  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: s9 batch 17 (and 16?) changes on: October 17, 2016, 09:18:15 PM
I wonder how much it would freak out if you used an external PWM fan driver and piped through the tach line so it would still see the fan spinning?
Yup, I am thinking of something like that. Right now I have noticed that the tuning process can complete with only one fan online, while the other is unplugged. But bmminer stops immediately after tuning completes, and puts out an error message, when it detects a single fan.

Can someone please post their Config.ini  It's in /etc/config directory of the miner.
You can ssh in to the miner user:root password:admin
TIA

55  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: s9 batch 17 (and 16?) changes on: October 17, 2016, 05:28:55 PM
I received my Antminer S9 Batch 17 today. It takes almost 30 minutes to start mining. Meanwhile the fans are running loud and produce a weird harmonic, which is irritating at best.

I was snooping around a bit by sshing into the miner.

Looks like at bootup, the miner writes fresh config files and then runs a process called
Code:
single-board-test

single-board-test then runs scores of test possibly to characterise the ASIC chips; which was the output being seen in the Kernel log.

Finally bmminer is instantiated to start mining.

Code:
/usr/bin/bmminer  --version-file /usr/bin/compile_time --api-listen --default-config /config/bmminer.conf

bmminer, first sets fan PWM to 100 then reduces it to 30. It's still plenty loud at 30. It would be good to be able to manually control the fan speed.

Dhl seems to have more custom issues then ups or fedex.

Hmm, interesting, DHL has good service here in Europe. Is this delay a regular feature while using DHL? I might try UPS next time then.
