4121  Other / Meta / Re: Just wondering why my thread was deleted on: August 16, 2020, 03:22:10 PM
I wonder why it doesn't appear on the modlog section because I saw there that removed topic are public but this one has been removed yet it doesn't shown on there. Any reason why? I mean it should have been there, right?
It's likely the thread was moved to trashcan and not manually deleted.
Topics which are deleted show up in modlog, however when a thread is moved to trashcan (only accessible to staffs, global mods and admins) the action does not show up in modlog as the threads can be easily restored by global mods and admins.

Reply from a staff;
That topic has been moved to the "Trashcan" board (restorable), and not completely removed, that's why it's not showing in the modlog.
4122  Other / Meta / Re: Is there anything like a ban notice on: August 16, 2020, 05:48:52 AM
Bitcoin transactions are transparent, so as said above, if he had included a repayment address the loan can be refunded by the borrower and there would not be any need for a confirmation from him/her as the txid can be checked and verified by other users. Complications may arise if the loan is defaulted, especially if it is a collateralized one and the user would have to receive something of equal value which would have previously been escrowed. This can however be arranged between the escrower and the user off the forum. (Through one-way PMs on the forum)
There's also the case of the borrower defaulting a no-collateral loan and the lender not being active to draw attention to it or create a scam accusation thread against the said user.

In this case I think the mods would allow a reply in the appeal thread (if one was created) in which the banned user can request the community looks into it.
4123  Economy / Economics / Re: Fixed amount vs. infinite coins on: August 15, 2020, 07:56:10 PM
You are talking shit about gold - it is used as wealth storage against inflation because there is limited amount of gold available.

Same is with bitcoin or any other limited supply coins - they will be used only for speculation or storage.
Technically, there is a finite supply of gold, but all we have are estimates on when it would be exhausted, gold mining has been on for centuries. It's quite different from Bitcoin which is barely over a decade. They are also very different in functionality and usage. Being limited in supply is not the singular quality that attracts people to Bitcoin, it is immutable, divisible, trustless, pseudo anonymous and decentralized.
You're right about Bitcoin being used for speculation or storage, but that's not its only use case. It's already being used a means of making payments. Try using gold to wager on a gambling site.

Bitcoin will never be used for payments so it could not be used for real economy.

Economy needs working fiat / assets / currency used for payment and you need to control it by emitting new coins or burning useless one.

As soon as there not enough bitcoins and last one would be mined, there will no possibility to make transactions using bitcoins.
• Bitcoin is already accepted by a number of merchants and can be used to pay for services.
• The economy does not need massive printing out of thin air which devalues the money in circulation.
• I would assume you are referring to miners' reward for each confirmed block... the last mined bitcoins is still a long way away and it would be difficult to predict now how the network would adjust to that. There are however transaction fees which are paid on every transaction and which goes to the miner, so there would always be a financial reward for block confirmation.
4124  Economy / Economics / Re: COVID19 VACCINE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH? on: August 15, 2020, 07:32:28 PM
With all the excitement about various vaccines being worked on, I fear one of them may be approved too soon. Vaccine preparation usually goes through many stages to ensure its effectiveness as well as the absence of side effects, this process occurs over several phases which would take months or years.

The novel coronavirus has been around for over 9 months, this has given researchers and laboratory scientists some time to understand the virus and come up with a viable protection, there was however little historic data as regards this virus as it's fairly new, potentially increasing the time it would take to have a vaccine created and approved.
We should also note that if a vaccine passes preclinical and clinical trials, there still needs to be a period for monitoring of the volunteers who showed positive improvements, this time however they would be watching for side effects.

Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it. The political pressure to restart and revive the economy while bringing life back to normal shouldn't be a reason to endanger the lives of people.
4125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is SegWit and LN adoption still low today? on: August 15, 2020, 04:05:25 PM
yeah, i have the same conclusion specially since these days i have been searching for a decentralized exchange and i feel like they too suffer from the same chicken and egg problem. people want higher liquidity and better features in DEX so they don't use them but they can only improve if people use these DEXes!
DEXes has seen a surge in adoption over the past few months, although this may be partially due to the hype around the DeFi system. Adoption however needs a spark and this might be the one to increase usage in decentralized exchanges.
In the case of LN, it would definitely be a gradual process, making payments is meant to be basic and easy, on both the part of the buyer and seller, the intricacies of LN may be confusing to most people now, but with time and a more streamlined access, it would surely get more adoption.

Tryninja has included a notification button in his telegram bot which would notify you when boards you posted in are deleted so you can keep track of it - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5248878.msg54441882#msg54441882

Back in 2012 Bitcoin was not quite popular, so the basis of adding a custom icon is that, this is the custom forum for BTC and is primarily for discussions about the bitcoin network. An altcoins section is in place to make it more inclusive, but integrating more specific altcoins into the forum is not necessary as most of them are quite dissimilar from Bitcoin.

If popularity was given such precedence we would be having shills about DeFi projects run on the forum.
4129  Other / Meta / Re: Free Advertising, YES or NO on: August 15, 2020, 08:36:16 AM
That's a rule that many managers state in their requirements, but do not always enforce, maybe due to the fact that the users applying for their campaign may be currently wearing some other signature of some other campaign, and taking that off would mean they would lose their current spot without any guarantee of getting into the new one they are applying for.
Some may use it as a means to check for bugs in the sig codes when launching a campaign. While some actually try to exploit the participants.

Whether or not the rules are fair when enforced, the employer (and managers) reserves the right to make them and the applicants can aswell reject them by not applying.

I think this thread should be in service discussion board, not Meta.
4130  Other / Meta / Re: Battling against scammers?? on: August 14, 2020, 10:10:33 PM
But, I know what to do. Reporting it can do good to the forum. Is there any distinguishing way that the thread has been reported already?
If you're asking if there's a way to know if a thread has already been reported by someone else, there isn't.
You can of course report threads you suspect to be scam and add your reasons in the comment. It would usually get deleted if confirmed by the mods and the user nuked if their activity is low enough. Cases of malwares would get the user banned.

You should also check out the trust flag and feedback system, it is useful in warning users of potential and confirmed scams.
4131  Other / Meta / Re: Battling against scammers?? on: August 14, 2020, 02:33:56 PM
So we as users should be aware and keep always eyes open against them. Is anyone here trying to organize a taskforce to battle against scammers? I do believe it can help theymos a lot by just sharing info regarding on scammer and hackers activity in a thread.
As mentioned, there are a couple of unofficial means of fighting scams on the forum, as well as default systems to protect users (such as the newbie/guest warning in some sensitive boards).
An official list of scams would not be possible as it cannot be comprehensive. There are always new innovative ways to scam and keeping up with them is a lot of work and not 100% possible.
Such a list could also be counter productive as users would assume any offer not officially listed cannot be a scam and hence fall victim to newer methods used by scammers.

As a rule;
• Verify, do not trust, and
• Treat any offer as a scam until proven otherwise.
4132  Other / Meta / Re: Lots of my posts are being deleted on: August 14, 2020, 09:07:34 AM
If they're mostly old posts it shouldn't affect you much. I personally do not like the idea of reporting old posts especially when there's no active discussions in the thread it was made in, better for mods to focus on more pertinent issues.

Users rarely get banned for spamming even when done repeatedly, although there is a rule regarding that. In very serious cases there would be a warning or a temporary ban, if the user persists the temp ban period would be increased, till a parma is issued.
Whether or not the post were worthy of being deleted is objective, you and the mods could have different conclusions regarding that.
4133  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal/Venmo are going to become bitcoin vendors? on: August 14, 2020, 05:01:23 AM
Many believe this to be a great news for bitcoin owing the high number of users on PayPal and Venmo, but PayPal has been used as an indirect method for transacting in bitcoins on Paxful and coinbase. Bitccoin has also become quite popular globally and potentially majority of users on both platforms would have heard about it or are using it, this means it will not be opening the network to a new market.

Another perceived advantage is that it makes it easier for one to handle bitcoins (buying, selling and holding) this would however come with side effects;
• Centralization issues - it's unclear how they would go about it or if they would at all. But, NOT your private keys, NOT your BTC. If they could restrict transactions at will, that will be a problem.
• Cost of transactions
• Personal information privacy - a hack on someones profile could break their pseudo anonymity and personal identity could be linked to addresses they own.
4134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lost large number of bitcoins ----> 10 year anniversary on: August 13, 2020, 04:41:32 PM
I've been hearing about this dust attack. I wonder if it is possible to recover any lost bitcoin just like the one op mentioned.
No, a dust attack cannot be used to get bitcoins which are stuck in a wallet, only the seed phrase and private keys can sign transactions.

Dust represents very small amounts of bitcoins (satoshis) and they are used to attempt to break the pseudo anonymity of a wallet owner.
A Bitcoin user who owns a HD wallet can have intputs divided among different addresses. This prevents a link being made between all the addresses they own. When a user receivs a dust input and includes that UTXO in a transaction, the sender (scammer) can link up different addresses to an identity.
• Consider a case where a forum user posts a public address on their profile, if I sent dusts to them I could link all their addresses to their forum profile should they use the dust utxo in transactions. It can also be used to link to exchange addresses.
4135  Other / Meta / Re: Is your Bitcointalk password strong enough? on: August 13, 2020, 12:46:31 PM
But even doing all this, if bitcointalk forum gets somehow compromised or hacked again (happened before) someone can steal even our hardest passwords.
Can we expect to see some solutions for this issue in new forum software?
Maybe using 2FA, OTP or something else?
The previous hack on accounts was due to an SMF vulnerability exploited through the security question option, it has been disabled since then to prevent a repeat.
2FA has been suggested many times on the forum, but there has been no action taken regarding that, for now you could use it on accounts linked to your profile, such as your email address to prevent a breach. Also keep your email address private and do not share important links, such as your captcha bypass link.
4136  Economy / Economics / Re: Will African countries be developed? on: August 13, 2020, 10:54:08 AM
Regardless of the number of resources available, if not managed properly, the region would remain underdeveloped. Corruption and mismanagement are the major barriers in Africa.
Using Nigeria as a microcosm of the continent, the nation discovered crude oil almost a century ago, becoming the major natural resource. This discovery was expected to bring major growth and industralisation which was not the case;
• The region which was the major source of oil still remained developed and even suffered from regular oil spills, depleting the environment and harming the people, this led to conflicts further slowing development.
• Agriculture was the major source of revenue before oil, but was neglected after leading to a depletion of the sector. With the over dependency on oil there was no support for the economy as the oil sector failed.

I am just thinking if all these can change, I wish many Africa countries to be developed. What can possibly lead to Africa countries getting advanced so the quality of living in the continent will improve? Smiley
The system has to be changed. Africans countries like Rwanda with a credible government has been developing. Long periods of credible leadership in various sensitive sectors would be necessary for the development of the economy.
4137  Economy / Economics / Re: Universal Basic Income: Ideas on how to make it work? on: August 13, 2020, 06:57:11 AM
- How much to pay? Since they're paying millions of people, they need to ensure they have enough money set aside for that, or UBI payments will deplete the government's money.
This would be dependent on the nation's economy. Emerging markets and developing economies may not be able to carry out this sustainably as their economies are not as robust and they usually have a rapidly growing population.

- What time interval to pay in - If this is not controlled we get the same consequence as paying too much at a time.
This would still be dependent on the above factor as well as the living wages in a particular country.

- Should people be filtered out based on financial status (EDIT: and employment status as well)? Presumably finance ministries of governments have records of every citizen's earnings (as in profit not balance), and a UBI proposal needs to be crafted meticulously to be very precise in the criteria for organizing everyone into (only a few) financial wellness categories, a vague set of requirements can be challenged by parliaments and get the proposal blocked.
If people were filtered out then it will no longer be universal, but rather a selective palliative giving you those who are most in need.

- Corruption: Some of the budget can be stolen and laundered by people in charge of safekeeping it.
This is an issue that should be addressed with or without such a program. Corruption especially at a large scale when left unchecked has limited the growth of many rich economies with enough resources and work force to become a developed nation.
4138  Other / Meta / Re: Will I be banned if I deleted too many posts at once? on: August 13, 2020, 06:06:56 AM
But I wouldn't delete it, it's just a waste of time and it can be useful for various things to not delete submitted posts. It's part of the history of your account, so why delete it?
I would agree with regular posts made in general sections of the forum, deleting such (on a large scale) may skew a thread as the posts may have been quoted by other members involved in the discussion. Bounty reports however are not discussions and are unecessay imo, as the managers could use an external service like Google forms and check manually rather than walls of quotes and re-quotes, but they go for the easy way.

Deleting them wouldn't affect much and would help unclog threads, also there's the privacy issue as some of these users enter social media campaigns on the forum using their actual profiles, this could lead to their offline identity being linked on the forum later on.
4139  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SportsBet.io doesn't pay out my profits!! on: August 13, 2020, 05:54:56 AM
Now in a serious note, I think new users should not be allowed to post scam accusations in this forum until they become a high ranked member or have some other type of protection so newbies won't be able to do what they did in the past few weeks.
A couple of the newbies may actually be high ranked members using their alts to incite discussions, such a restriction may force them to use their original accounts, which they wouldn't want to do, but it's unnecessary and would have negative effects on real newbies who were actually scammed by websites.
The best solution would be to ignore the users once you notice that pattern of posting, you could also leave a neutral feedback on the accounts used for trolling.
4140  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: August 12, 2020, 09:56:56 PM
< >
Very aptly put. The versatility of Bitcoin is one of the factors that gives it value as it appeals to several classes of people. This coupled with its other advantages may actually limit its use in the long term as a means of making daily payments. Why spend my $100 worth of bitcoin on a bicycle when those bitcoins could be worth $121 by the next day? People still ask if the 10,000BTC for 2 pizzas guy still regrets it, well spending 0.002BTC for 2 pizzas would likely be ridiculous a decade from now.
Merchants may eventually switch from payment processors when they recognize this huge value potential as you said, but would more people be willing to give away bitcoins.
