421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Hide behind full node. on: February 22, 2024, 11:20:42 AM
I just wonder if my real IP@home can be leaked via DNS or some other detail. That's why I don't dare to start bitcoind at home yet.

I think I'll use a VPN with kill switch to be on the safe side.

Since you concerned about that, bad VPN provider or configuration can lead to either IPv4, IPv6 and DNS leaks.
422  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cyber Criminals abuse Google Cloud Run - targets crypto on: February 22, 2024, 11:11:50 AM
Thanks for sharing the link.

The emails contain hyperlinks to Google Cloud Run, which can be identified due to the use of run[.]app as the top-level domain (TLD).

Since that domain owned by google, i'm curious whether email spam filter simply deemed all subdomain under it as non-malicious website.

No open source wallet was mentioned, and some of these services stopped working, such as LBC and Paxful, so I think that the hackers added cryptocurrencies to their list of targets, while their real target was user data and banking data.

Personally i'd speculate creator of the malware assume people who use open-source wallet have better security awareness.

  1) Ensuring client privacy

...Is only possible when connecting through Tor. Or possible I2P or CDNJS, but I have never tried those two alternative methods, so I cannot comment about them.

--snip--

Which CDJNS you refer? I did quick search, but i only found centralized service offered by Cloudflare,
424  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Resources needed to run Bitcoin core node on: February 22, 2024, 09:28:59 AM
Some people mention pruned mode as solution of storage requirement. While it's true, take note you still need to store at least 550MB of most recent blocks and all UTXO which currently has size about 10GB. Pruned mode generally considered less helpful since it only can share unconfirmed TX and recent blocks.
Another thing that needs to be noted is that running pruned node is less flexible. You can't run Electrum server, much less lightning software supports it, and if you ever want to add another (old) wallet, you'll have to re-sync.

FWIW, EPS and LND let you run their software while connected to pruned node.

Compatible with all Bitcoin Core resource-saving features:
  • Pruning
  • Blocksonly
  • Disabled txindex

Note that since version 0.13 pruned nodes are supported although they cause performance penalty and higher network usage.

But obviously it comes with many limitation and not really practical for many people.
425  Economy / Reputation / Re: AI Spam Report Reference Thread on: February 21, 2024, 12:20:49 PM
Could someone check these users? I found these new account spam on several boards, including technical board with unhelpful/generic response.

hello, if your Bitcoin transaction is stuck on Cash App, start by checking your wallet for the transaction receipt. Use a Blockchain Explorer to monitor the status and consider reaching out to Cash App's support with the transaction details. If the issue persists,

Additionally, you may want to check if Cash App supports transaction acceleration or fee adjustment. If the problem persists, reaching out to Cash App's customer support could be helpful. Best of luck in resolving the issue

This advice isn't helpful since the transaction has been confirmation a week before this reply was created. Checking TX detail on Cash App application or blockchain won't help the transaction confirmed faster, while contacting customer service is very common suggestion.

Why in need of public keys suddenly, the work which public keys can do, private keys does it best and reliable

Private key and public key on Bitcoin do different thing. Private key usually used to sign message/transaction, while public key usually used to verify message/transaction. It also doesn't answer OP question "What are best and secured tools to create public keys ?".

I hope if I can simplify the question raised in respect to the issue of Data integrity in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Well of course, transactions on this platform is the best by virtue of the fact that industrial revolution has since been overtaken by telecommunication revolution in this age. Most persons are willing to migrate to this clime, but are jittery due to much computer based inputs which majority are still illiterate. Therefore, the integrity of the processes are questioned, so the owners of the system should engage the uniformed public on reliability and sustainability of the transaction details that involves people hard earned money. Otherwise, it is the best medium for financial transaction in this recent times.

It doesn't even answer how Bitcoin ecosystem handle data integrity.
426  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Lost 12-word seed, got good hints on: February 21, 2024, 11:47:10 AM
I think it's impossible to recover if you only had the first letter of each word without the public key or BTC address.

--snip--

FYI, btcrecover provide let you attempt recovery without address by providing address DB instead[1]. Although it's not clear whether you can use address DB if you attempt to recover Electrum seed words.

427  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: show amount of the transaction in other currency (than BTC) before sending on: February 21, 2024, 11:36:39 AM
Is the whole idea behind using Tor, not for you to hide your location (IP address and location)

Will the change in the Fiat currency not void that goal? (Your local currency can reveal your country of origin or is that info not transmitted to the Electrum server?)

Looking at Electrum protocol[1], there's no method which send your preferred fiat. So the answer is no. Some people also measure their coin value using USD even though they don't live on US.

428  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Core: unconfirmed transactions containing a specific address on: February 21, 2024, 11:30:14 AM
A watch only Electrum wallet instantly shows unconfirmed transactions. That means the Electrum server keeps the database you are looking for. See if you can use this for your needs.

I also believe this should be appropriate solution. Looking at Electrum protocol, you could just use this API call.

blockchain.scripthash.get_mempool

Return the unconfirmed transactions of a script hash.

Signature

    blockchain.scripthash.get_mempool(scripthash)

    New in version 1.1.

    scripthash

The script hash as a hexadecimal string.

Result

A list of mempool transactions in arbitrary order. Each mempool transaction is a dictionary with the following keys:

--snip--

Script hash refer to ScriptPubKey and you can run your own Electrum server.

Pruned mode generally considered less helpful since it only can share unconfirmed TX and recent blocks.

But my concern is,what is the necessity of one downloading all Bitcoin dataset before processing any of your transactions, which will require more data, money, and the capacity of your computer or device, also matter...

You need to download whole Bitcoin blockchain to verify that all TX/block doesn't violate Bitcoin protocol (e.g. spending Bitcoin without private key or creating Bitcoin out of thin air).
430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Hide behind full node. on: February 21, 2024, 10:31:04 AM
You might as well as configure Bitcoin Core (on your laptop) only using Tor. That way, you can avoid trusting VPN provider you use.

Perhaps a better idea might be to run an electrum server next to bitcoind, and then run electrum on your laptop.

That way, OP also can avoid rescan blockchain if you add address or wallet which already has balance.
431  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [QUESTION] Service for secure anonymous P2P messaging? on: February 21, 2024, 10:15:59 AM
I asked about bitcoin, but I should have said blockchain. I don't have any specific crypto requirement, just wondering if any messaging app service exists that does integrate some form of blockchain for security, signing, encryption, etc.

If none of that is something that blockchain can help with, pardon the poor question.

SimpleX looks nice--is there a python library for API integration?

I expect most decent messaging app wouldn't bother add non essential feature such as blockchain or cryptocurrency support. Usually, you only can find cryptocurrency wallet or app with chat feature. Here's an example, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=one.mixin.messenger. And FWIW, Telegram might fit your criteria if you only use secret chat[1] and use either disposable phone number or buy anonymous phone number which only can be used for Telegram[2].

432  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Wasabi Wallet - Open Source, Noncustodial Coinjoin Software on: February 21, 2024, 09:53:23 AM
--snip--
When was that comment about smartphones originally made, and how have smartphones of today have become more powerful since the original announcement? I believe some smartphone hardware might be starting to reach the capability of what some software requires of it to function like a desktop, no?

Although the smartphone's OS could be limiting, especially Apple's smartphones.

While it's true smartphone hardware become more powerful, it's not the only limitation. Theoretically, Wasabi Wallet need to run in background while connected to the CoinJoin coordinator and doing some stuff (choose input, sign transaction, etc.). And since Wasabi Wallet use Tor by default, Tor also need to run in background. I expect it could drain battery quickly and the OS show warning about it. CMIIW.
433  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt 26.0 keeps crashing on Ubuntu 22.04.3 lts - Help please on: February 21, 2024, 09:37:57 AM
There's no need to clear content of debug.log file. OP just need to copy part of debug.log starting from next time he open Bitcoin Core until it crash.
Sure, the clearing is not obligatory but I just wanted to make stuff to be much easier for him  because of his    acknowledgment of being  "not a coder so don't understand the debug.log". Trying to follow your advice he could  just not find the correct part of "debug.log starting from next time he open Bitcoin Core until it crash".

He just need to pay attention to date and time on each line, which should be easy since he know how to install Ubuntu by himself.

This was the first crash yesterday and the following error message comes up when re-started:

Settings file could not be written.

A fatal error occurred. Check that settings file is writable, or try running with -nosettings.

- Failed renaming settings file /home/hg/snap/bitcoin-core/common/.bitcoin/settings.json.tmp to /home/hg/snap/bitcoin-core/common/.bitcoin/settings.json

--snip debug.log content--

Unfortunately the debug.log doesn't provide any helpful information. But since you install Bitcoin Core using Snap, you might want to uninstall current Bitcoin Core and reinstall it using different method (e.g. using .tar.gz file).
434  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Any alternative outside Public Blockchain on: February 20, 2024, 11:49:02 AM
Am new in this community, the rapid increase in technology and mathematics related to Bitcoin makes me confuse,am also concerned  about the safety of clients data since all transactions are done on a single public network.
I brought up this topic because I want more explanation,if there is any development or means outside of the public Blockchain that also stores client data to ensure more privacy. I also learnt about lightweight wallet that connects to full node before any transaction, why is it so.....

Client data? If you want to store client's arbitrary data (not holding client's Bitcoin), why don't just use traditional server or database?
435  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt 26.0 keeps crashing on Ubuntu 22.04.3 lts - Help please on: February 20, 2024, 11:44:08 AM
Is bitcoin-qt the only application that crash randomly on your device?

Hi Can anyone help me please. I am running it in pruned mode and it keeps crashing. Sometimes it runs for days and sometimes for minutes. I am not a coder so don't understand the debug.log.

Stop bitcoin-qt, clear the content of debug.log file and run bitcoin-qt again. After the crash (if any) place the content of debug.log into your post in this thread. We will examine it and hopefully help.

With our  eyes closed, nothing can be done, unfortunately.

There's no need to clear content of debug.log file. OP just need to copy part of debug.log starting from next time he open Bitcoin Core until it crash.
436  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Choose Your Best Hardware Wallet and Why on: February 20, 2024, 11:18:52 AM
2. Worst Hardware Wallet Ledger, they have breached privacy and security for the use of their wallet.
They are close source, have data breaches but I am not sure that Ledger is a worst hardware wallet.

And known to lying that private key can't be extracted from their device[1]. But i agree it's not the worst when BitFi exist where it got hacked many times even though it claims to be "unhackable"[2].

437  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why High Demand for Bitcoin Testnet Coins? on: February 20, 2024, 11:05:48 AM
For years I was helping members with Bitcoin Testnet coins but in last few weeks I noticed a big increase of newbie members asking me for coins.

There is another member with faucet in forum that was abused and emptied, and I started receiving messages from members asking for coins.

This is very suspicious to me, so I ask if there is some bounty campaign or project that is paying money for testnet coins?
who are you to point with the finger how testcoins should be use it, free will shoud be part of the bitcoiners culture, no one should try to ban, control, etc the use of testcoins, i saw what they are doing is TESTING  with small amounts  of BTC less than 0.01 this year more than a million people is learning how to use bitcoin testnet and that is good for bitcoin, the real problem here  are you people ! trying to tell people how to uses blockchain even test coins. are you serious  ? i have been folowing bitcoin since 2009. let people use bitcoin testnet so they can understand.

i've never see so many people using bitcoin testnet this year and learning and asking everything. let the people learn about bitcoin (that is what Satoshi Nakamoto wish).

if you want to help people teach them how use bitcoin how create wallets etc, create a free course for the new people. DONATE can help people but TEACHING is more valuable.

dont be greede with new people let them learn.

If you've been following Bitcoin since 2009, i would expect you know that
1. Many developer complain it's tricky to obtain tBTC.
2. This isn't first time people abuse tBTC for NFT, token or altcoin airdrop.
3. Testnet has been reset twice since in past people not using tBTC for development or learning purpose.

You're naive if you actually believe those who ask tBTC in order to get airdrop actually want to learn about BTC.
438  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: I want to get very small USDT loan on: February 19, 2024, 10:48:29 AM
Loan Use

1. Forex trading in Exness

Security

1. I am willing to take very small loan and I have no collateral now.  I have a govt job in India ( salary around 435 USDT per month converting my currency ). My salary date - 2nd of each month.  So if I fail in forex trading I will pay you back from my salary. Don't worry. I will not run away with 30 USDT.

2. I want to utilize my 10 days so I am asking this loan.

Please  comment in positive way. I am serious about forex trading. If you help me, I will be pleased on you.

1. Exness provide demo account. Have you tried it to get familiar with Exness and trading in general?
2. Rather than asking for loan, why don't you buy USDT with your salary? That way, you'll save your and others time.
439  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What to know of Nodes and Running a Node on: February 19, 2024, 10:09:05 AM
To allow incoming connections, yes, you must open a port, but this is definitely not an obstacle to run a node. I run a node without even bothered with ports and firewalls.

You can also use Tor and allow incoming connections over it, and you will still avoid all the networking hassle.

In addition, you could just enable UPnP either by adding upnp=1 on bitcoin.conf or tick "Map port using UPnP" on GUI setting. Of course, i assume the router support and enable UPnP.
440  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there any malware that captures your recovery seed when shown or typed? on: February 19, 2024, 10:02:55 AM
Is encrypting mnemonic codes with aes-256-cbc or any sensitive data still safe, using Linux?

Yes. Although in this case, you better ensure your device is secure. If malware exist on your device, your mnemonic would be compromised when you create new wallet or perform encryption over plain text/file.

Why would you want to do that? They are meant to be written on paper. Storing them on a computer, even encrypted, is almost certainly asking for trouble since the mnemonic has to be decided at some point.
Forget the mnemonic. You still have to store the AES-256 private key somewhere in plain text. It's just like the standard method of writing down the phrase but with extra steps.

Or remember password used for AES-256 encryption. And yes, i'm aware the password is hashed into 256-bit data which used as encryption key.
