I'm imagining the last bitcoin mined as a worldwide celebratory event, kind of like when Deep Thought answered the question to what is the meaning of life the universe and everything in The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And probably with a similar aftermath of letdown.

4-10% isn't bad but still not sure that's worth the risk, and if you have to lock up the coins for a term that's even less attractive. Still, if you've got your stash might be a good way to park it for the future.

While some chains may allow users to “un-stake” their coins instantaneously — but forfeit any unclaimed rewards — others may entail a mandatory lockup period that renders funds illiquid and could lead to missed active investment opportunities.

It's an ongoing race between the btc algorithm's built in austerity and miners' efforts to squeeze profit from it. ASICs are still improving, energy costs are widely variable around the world, regulations can hurt or help depending on the country, etc. I think miners will be just fine for the next few halvings at least.

So that's what Satoshi Nakamoto looks like??

that's the avatar some beartard used in telegram, under the nickname CPA, months ago.

Anyone noticed that we have breached 17,800,000 BTC already? Which means that 85% of all BTC have been mined. And in the next 10+ years we can all assumed that 'almost' all bitcoin is mined already. Have you accumulated at least 1 BTC in your wallet?

Current bitcoin mined:  17,851,062 BTC

The last Bitcoin is predicted to be mined in 2140. It sounds crazy but it seems to be real. I wonder what will happen after the last Bitcoin is mined. For example, what will Bitcoin miners do then ?

Thinking about 2140 is like people in 1900 thinking about today, imagining all the inventions that are really just improvements on what they know instead of what they can't even comprehend like GPS and gene therapy. Think of all the unexpected inventions and change over the last 120 years and project that into the next 120. The world will be a very different place. I expect even the term 'bitcoin miner' will seem antiquated.

i can see why the "blockchain-not-bitcoin" idiots went wrong. there is only one blockchain that has a valid use case and that is an invention: bitcoin.

to see an entire high-tech nation, and not a marginal one, to fall for this stupidity is hard to believe. the only explanation i have ( and i am no expert in this field) is that TRUST is such a big issue for china, since there is this culture of cheating and now they hope that "blockchain" will somehow make it easier for them to trust companies (for example).

i dont see "blockchain" working. it is out for a decade now, where are the applications? other than money/bitcoin?

if they really go all-in to "blockchain" with their entire economy it will end as a catastrophic failure like the Great Leap Forward.

That's because if they abruptly approve of bitcoin, other idiotic nations will call China, the funding nation for criminals. I think it's good they have reversed their earlier stance and have recognised blockchain. Once everyone gets involved into blockchain, it's only a matter of time they recognise Bitcoin.

I don't necessarily follow your assumptions there. China doesn't have to recognize BTC ever (though I think they eventually will). They can establish their own mandatory digital currency with a state centralized blockchain and any Chinese citizen who uses something else they'll charge with "provoking trouble".

The activist, Huang Xueqin, was detained last week in the southern city of Guangzhou, according to friends who asked not to be identified by name. The authorities accused Ms. Huang, 31, of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a vague accusation that the government often uses to silence activists who challenge the status quo.

Say what you will, the young autist has already accomplished more with her life than any of us ever will.

True, but nothing is quite as exhilarating as reading posts from adult middle aged men disparaging teenage girls.

Nice to read some bullish sentiment from an analyst...

The Fed feels threatened about losing control over the world's monetary system and is afraid of the dollar being replaced as the world's reserve currency. Furthermore, the dollar, digital or not, is still just a dollar that can be manipulated, inflated, and devalued by the Federal Reserve System, as it has been for over 100 years now.

The same cannot be said for true mineable digital currencies like Bitcoin and other analogous coins as they are immune to inflation due to a set amount that can ever exist in circulation. Therefore, despite the noise, and the temporary setback in price, Bitcoin and other systemically important coins are very likely headed much higher long term.

For those in need :

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

What is the reason behind the ETH has gone 8%down today and other coins also downside why Crypto market suddenly crashed happen is there any reason behind this. So this is the best time to buy ETH or I have to wait for some more time to buy.

Some are thinking that the BTC futures contracts that are due on Friday are the cause. Others the testimony Zuckerberg is giving to the USA Congress right now about Libra. Whatever the reason, it's industry wide not just Eth. Nothing has changed with Eth to my knowledge.

I kind of hate how Facebook has coopted the conversation about crypto, when Libra isn't really even crypto. Baby and bathwater, etc.

One of the least depressing aspects of all this is that most of the politicos clearly have a strong grasp of the difference between Mark's creepy baby and real crypto.

In the previous bunch of hearings Libra got the living shit kicked out of it and Bitcoin came out of it looking like the smug kid who keeps its head down.

That's a good point. Though I suspect behind the scenes where the real practical regulatory discussions are taking place by analysts that bitcoin is still front and center.
494  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 23, 2019, 03:25:37 PM
The anti-crypto types are out for blood at the hearing on Libra. In that Bitcoin/Altcoins are the 'bastard stepchildren' under the Libra project...this is getting ugly indeed.

I had to walk away....so little facts...so much posturing. Also, beating up Zuckenberg for not inforcing 'truth' like Anti-Vaccine posts by individuals. All practicality is gone

from the hearings, just a frigging free for all of misinformation/lies/and pushback at Facebook. Shit. if I was Facebook, I'd go, don't like Libra, gonna go fully decentralized

with Bitcoin. Man, they would really howl then. What a clusterf*ck of a hearing.

Brad

That would be great if they'd peg Libra to BTC, that would make more sense. Libra could be the daily currency, and BTC remains the store of value. At least we have McHenry in the House as a crypto-booster. I expect in the next 2 or 3 congressional elections we'll get some new blood that isn't so against the concept. I'm guessing Maxine Waters still uses a rotary dial phone and writes paper checks.

Will Ethereum be able to hold its own in a rapidly changing and competitive market that is innovating all the time?

Isn't that the design goal of Ethereum? Ethereum has the largest team, and philosophically they seem to be primarily concerned with making it cutting edge technology, not worrying about price. The goals of most of us investors are probably not very well aligned with the hardcore Ethereum developers goals.

If we go to below $5,000 I’ll either sell every single asset I own & buy more BTC or I’ll hang myself.
Both options are as likely as each other.

Don't go out like David Carradine.

Buy the di... oh ffs not again. Even with regular DCA this is getting tiring. Well, sticking to my plan, either go down with the ship or be happy in a few years. Time to step away from the ticker for awhile. Though to be honest these kinds of price shenanigans are what I sort of expect once OTC investors start playing their games. Unlike the disaster that is the penny stock market though BTC at least has an immutable supply.

Correct.
Of course all due and usual disclaimers apply.
Not financial advice, DYOR....etc.

Sure, no worries, not planning buys or sells based on this, just trying to understand the model assumptions and bounds.

So. Um. TL;DR = 2023 $100k, 2028 $1m ? And some numbers in between. More or less.

An image is worth a thousand words.

Every halving multiplies BTCUSD by a factor of 8.

fillippone, I've been looking everywhere on the posts of PlanB - his tweets, his Medium posts. There was a prediction that sometime before or after the halving in May next year, he predicted the BTC price will be $50,000. Could you explain in layman's terms how he arrived with that number?

He noted that there is a correlation, a very high correlation, between the Stock to flow ratio and price. Stock is the total of Bitcoin ever mined, flow is the Bitcoin production via flow. This relationship holds since 2009-2012(even before first halving, and still valid today), and never overshoot price of more than 100% (price was neve below 50% of model value) and never underestimated more than 300% (price was never 3 time bigger than model price). So it was a little bit conservative.
If you put model parameters into the SF at halving in May 2020 you get a price of 50,000 BTCUSD. As simple as that.

So if I understand that correctly then we can bound the table s.t. next halving could see price as low as $25,000 and not quite as high as $150,000?
