Ever since June 3 or June 4 it's gotten really bad, all these new people coming in since the Silk Road stories.
483  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How do you edit the source of the forums? on: June 23, 2011, 06:41:05 AM
The forums are open source, so shouldn't there be a way to edit the code? I have git setup to make pull requests.

I want to implement an ignore feature, because the forums have been getting really spammy lately.

The bitcoin forum used to be a place of lively discussion of political and economic theories and practices.  Now it has descended into a junk name-calling forum full of irrelevant and ridiculous topics, each topic full of irrelevant and ridiculous posts.  Can anyone suggest an alternative bitcoin forum for me to join?  Is there any?

there is nothing plausible about this story.

and some sucker is going to end up giving him money.

so its ok to scam here, but if i make fun of the scammers, my post gets deleted?

The forum is open-source. Get over it.

The government put a man on the moon back when computers were fancy typewriters.

or did they!??!

'dun dun dun'

There's a mirror on the moon that you can shine light at and it comes back at you.

This is fake!! Everyone is using my real life experience as a meme now. I can't speak for Allinvain but I know he would not be impressed by this either.

Those boobs aren't healthy.

I think she has vitamin deficiencies or something.
491  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got hacked - any help is welcome! (25,000 BTC stolen) on: June 23, 2011, 03:57:01 AM
Dude, no - I am super serious. I understand the breadth of your loss. Now I know how you feel. If only some generous people could donate to my address below, I would find some peace.

1,000 BTC may not mean much to you, having lost so much more, but I can tell you I do nothing but think about those coins, rattling around some nasty netbook somewhere, scared and alone.

Please, while I know 25k bitcoins is a lot, consider looking deep into your soul and sending something to make up for my measly 1k loss.

I thank you in advance!

Stop trolling. I know for a fact, from my side investigations, that you only lost 600 BTC.
492  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Too many Bitcoin services to keep track off? on: June 23, 2011, 03:29:59 AM
The problem with all these directories is that they don't rank items based on traffic or some other criteria like upvotes/downvotes. So it is hard to tell which are good.
493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What kind of person are you? on: June 23, 2011, 03:28:31 AM
I am intelligent sometimes, and a troll other times.
494  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why I still h ave faith in bitcoin's value on: June 23, 2011, 02:28:50 AM
I find it funny too that the last trade is 15.40 on Tradehill, yet everyone thinks it is going to zero...

Oh, about volume, since it isn't the same volume as Mt.Gox, I guess it would be easier to crush to zero, but jeeze, just doesn't seem to be happening.

It's okay, we'll wait while all the CRASH CRASH CRASH fanatics readjust their theories... comon boys, if it is so easy - why am I not seeing it trade at 1? 0.50? 0.01?

497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Does anyone else regularly check their spam folder now for Bitcoin news? on: June 22, 2011, 09:17:52 PM
I admit that I do this, although I have not received anything too valuable yet. I am referring to the list of emails that was hacked.
498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Idea: The Drug Road, a place to buy silk with bitcoins on: June 22, 2011, 08:56:14 PM
I bet the op has no idea where the "silk road" reference even comes from to trying make a joke by swapping it out.. You are only make yourself look foolish here imo. Just don't post crap anymore and go away altogether.

The silk road was invented by Marco Polo, who sailed around the world to India and beyond.
499  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Are you going to sell your Bitcoins before the difficulty reaches max? on: June 22, 2011, 08:34:46 PM
The maximum difficulty with SHA-256 is 2^224.

If we continue to double every month, as we have been, (which is very unlikely), we would reach it in about 200 months from now or 18 years. At that point the hashing power of the network would be gigantic. The network would use magnitudes more electricity then the entire world uses now.

This is where I got the original information that this could happen in 18 years. Do you think this would be reflected in the price already, or is it a good time to sell before then? A transfer to SHA-512 could cause commotion and a price drop.

500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Difficult and Moore's Law on: June 22, 2011, 07:56:04 PM
The data is at top500.org if you need me to quote it.

Thanks for the link.  So if I'm reading the data correctly, in November 2010 the Chinese Tianhe-1A was the #1 supercomputer at 2.57 petaflop/s.  Roughly six months later the K Computer was over 3 times faster at 8 petaflop/s.

That this jump was so close was coincidental.  There have been periods where the top computer remained as #1 for a few years, and the next wasn't substantially better.

With that type of growth rate, it's still hard for me to wrap my mind around how a technology created now (fluid or not) can account for the ever increasing power of technology.  In the short-term (which we are in) sure.  But out a couple of decades?

People said the same thing a few decades ago. The scaling of nanolithography has never slowed. Intel plans to have 14 nm chips by 2014. Also, scaling transistors vertically is the next break-through paradigm shift and there has been great innovation here. This will further increase computing power per watt and dollar incredibly.

On another note, optimizations in the transistor layout also has not slowed, such as better pipelining, etc. Lastly, there's been improvements in C compilers.

Everything I've mentioned allows for the sustained exponential increase.

Carbon nanotube based technology is another future possibility, but isn't necessary for this trend to continue.
