Anything you mention in the same context as hedging IS gambling, that is without doubt.

I am not sure what you think hedge means.  Use this for a defination:
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/h/hedge.asp

It reduces risk, makes things less of a gamble.  Anyways, I was just trying to point the OP in the right direction, not focus on the defination of words.  I am not sure if this is getting off top.

Trying to keep things on topic, I would say if your power costs are low, go with the sp20.  The S5 is a good machine, but I question the long term reliability of it.  Each new piece from BitMain has been worse than the last, however I think the S5 is an exception.  Unless your power costs are really high, go with the sp20.  Actually, even if your power costs are high go with the sp20.
There .... you said it yourself ..... makes things less of a gamble.

^^^^^^^
Mining for btc is a form of GAMBLING. Even if you are not solo mining, you are still assuming a number of risks, not the least of which is btc price.

If you hedge your equipment/expected mining value with BTC shorts, you can have minimal risk to the volatility of BTC.

Having a naked position in mining is gambling.  I would say 99% of people are in this category.  So yes, for 99% of people it is gambling.  Personally, it just isn't for me and I don't think it is for any serious operation.

It is just like any other large investment.  You need to get rid of risk.

would like to report strange behavior.

i have a set up with cold air being taken from outside and vented back out.

seems the miners cant handle being TOO COLD??

i had several s3 and s5 stop working because they were TOO COLD!

the s5 one board reports 0 degrees and does not hash.  restarting it or warming it up fixes the no hashing.  the s3's report a temp of 251 degrees and stop hashing all together until removed from the enclosure and warmed back up.

please advise.

thank you.
If you are keeping the PSU's in the same enclosure (and hopefully giving them a decent load), make sure they just circulate the air rather than vent it, that may sort your problem. I think your PSU's fail before the the rigs shutdown.

yea right dogie you still did not explain how to do it because you really don't know.
He heard a rumour ..... and unless he heard it before you, then it'll void your warranty. BE VERY SCARED! Shocked
585  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), In Stock $0.25/GH & 0.51W/GH on: February 02, 2015, 02:20:29 AM
Now is too late. I'm going to sleep. Maybe tomorrow...

p.s. can it brick my S5?
No, it can't brick it but you have to watch the temps (must be < 70C).
When you reboot, the modification will be gone, it is not persistent as it is not in the firmware.

As its a custom firmware, there is always a chance it can brick and then you'll have to send your controller in to be reflashed. You should also be vigilent and check nothing has been mixed in or changed by going through the source yourself.

And as a reminder, modifying the designed cooling system (by replacing fans or custom firmware) WILL invalidate your warranty. You should consider this a mod that you undertake at entirely your own risk.

As far as I am aware, bitmain's own firmware is the ONLY one documented (in these very threads!) as having bricked their own hardware. More to the point though, there are adequate warnings with the mods (hardware & software) to not warrant sensationalizing by dogie.

And NO, that mod can NOT brick your S5 as it will not even survive a reboot (I am working on a firmware mod that will persist on reboot though).

^^^ You are mixing up numbers, the amperage quoted is at 12v DC (twelve volts direct current) but neither 120v AC nor 240v AC.

Thanks Doh
over-complicate things for myself I did.

Thank you pekatete. You have given me a heaping of great information in your threads.

Dogie, I appreciate you coming in to confirm my mishap. I can still claim n00bness though eh' Smiley
Special thanks on search too, that is a huge boon!

You are more than welcome .... I try to answer as concisely as I can, whenever I can (without waffling).

S5 firmware fan speed mods .....

I stumbled accross this topic https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=940250 where they had a mod for the S4, and thought about making a firmware mod for the S5, in the process, the person who made the original mod to the module controlling the S4 fan has come up with a mod for the S5. Here's the link to the message: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=940250.msg10327889#msg10327889

I have not tested the firmware as I received my S5 with the stock fan DOA (got in touch with bitmain and they want me to take videos of it and / or buy something from them before  ... blah blah ... for another day that one!). If anyone is willing to give the modded firmware, please give it a go and provide feedback. there are links on the messaage, but I'll reproduce them below too:

1. fan_6 - slower than stock - https://mega.co.nz/#!MVtHXBKC!VEymK0FxLpuXTl5ZpxnNxlQNKOsp15V0vRy18Vb7dPI
2. fan_3 - slower than fan_6 - https://mega.co.nz/#!JFNnQALR!3x501jLm1GyzUlDMZ4USWGmDHYCyZKSSiNp4UWRWUnM
3. stock firmware (also on bitmain site) - https://mega.co.nz/#!1ENCRYIb!pbSf4wXt4nwX_0IYTH1LRh0mZ9_Gw3KgbCel8zyhOjo

If you try the firmware, please provide feedback either here or on the thread linked above to lanfeusst. This mod can also be the pilot for a permanent mod for updating cgminer et al!

12-19 and 10-24 should be identical performance wise, but 12-19 includes the extremely important reset button fix.

Identical is no where near accurate .... have you any guidance as to what versions of cgminer ship with either?

What's the recomended /acceptable rate to hit your API? Can I hit it like every 5 mins .... 24/7 ... 365?
Also, got any documentation on the API, or is it just the two links /queries available?
591  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread 0.24$/G Free Ocean Shipping on: January 31, 2015, 07:30:56 PM
Then if that is true the S1 is FAR better then the S3 anyday as far as solo or p2pool mining would go where best share is what gets you paid. Now regular pool mining that's different and goes by submitted number of shares
You can draw your own conclusions from your observations of best share found, but the fact will remain that it is pure luck that the S1 finds a higher size share than the S3 in your "tests".
592  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread 0.24$/G Free Ocean Shipping on: January 31, 2015, 07:12:27 PM
Maybe someone here can explain these strange issues I am having between an antminer S1 (works like it should) and antminer S3 (doesn't work right to me)...

This is my problem tried all firmware versions and have found the same issues and I recognize it as a problem because my S3 is not working as it should. Let me explain as you can see from the images below the S1 has a best share of 5.5 million, but the S3 is still sitting around the 1k?Huh WTF???

So does this mean that the S1 is truly better then the S3 even though the S3 have 4-5 times the hashrate or is there actually something wrong with the firmware yet again. IDK if anyone has this same problem but me myself I think that S3 should be around 20-30 million by now after 12 hours of runtime. I don't believe this is "luck" as it is on a pool and yes have tried others with the same results.

I have posted this issue before on a different thread and someone told me it was a "luck" issue and if so then that means the S1 is FAR better then the S3 anyday and I don't believe that believe this is a firmware or maybe CGminer software related issue. Because I still don't think the S1 should have such a high best share reported and the S3 be so low and no the miner does not act strange in anyway. It runs fine and is on a EVGA 750 B2 PSU (brand new) also have tried it on the CX 500 PSU the S1 is on and same problem.

Also ran both of them for 3 days on p2pool and the S1 had a BS of 14 million + but the S3 didn't even hit 8 million so therefore the S1 was finding all the shares and the S3 didn't do a thing.

The guy who told you it was simply luck that your S1 had a better best share than your S3, I am afraid to say, is right.

My PSU is running Nicely!

I modded it a bit Smiley took me about 60 Minutes...

I will make an tutorial when i get the time to do it.

BTW, i do not care if the power supply dies or not (it will probably not, a power supply should stand more than it is rated for...) it just cost 30$....

edit, it's a cooler master, it was cheap because it was on 75% off sale......... x)
Told you it'd work! But I have to say, that was NOT a small mod ..... I saw wires everywhere!
godspeed!!

595  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: run away thermal? on: January 29, 2015, 04:49:36 PM
Gotcha. Strange thing to have it at once on the both sides
I agree .... which makes me think PSU.

ya, fan turns on - I am using a Thermaltake 850W 80 PLUS Bronze

http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Bronze-ATX12V-EPS12V-SP-850M/dp/B007BDJ58C
That looks OK ..... if you happen to get an explanation out of bitmain (I am sure it is still within its warranty), do tell.

597  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: run away thermal? on: January 29, 2015, 03:02:06 PM
This is just one hashing board right?
Disconnect it from the controller and see if the other one works
It's both ..... images of both sides have a burnt chip.
598  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: run away thermal? on: January 29, 2015, 02:51:09 PM
is this what happens when it reaches 80 C or does this mean that it went above 80 C?  The unit still turns on and I can see that I have it set to turn off if it reaches 80 C, but it doesnt look like it did Sad

The unit powers on and I can get to it via the network but it wont hash - I figured it out when I took the sides off and found the burned board.

I dont have any thermal events on my other miners.

I am not surprised it is not hashing anymore, string mode = one out, all out!
Looks like you had that running without any mods, i.e standard fan in push configuration, so, what PSU did you have on this?
599  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), In Stock $0.25/GH & 0.51W/GH on: January 29, 2015, 12:49:46 PM
I have marked the LM75 (TEMPERATURE Sensor) Chip in the following pic. Just stick a small heatsink on top of the sensors, one on each hashing board.

If you put a heatsink on the the sensor wouldn't that make the sensor inaccurate then? I mean you're cooling the sensor but not necessarily the board.

Pretty much, hence its not recommended. There are more things that require cooling on that board than just the ASICs, and if they didn't we'd be seeing a vastly different cooling setup.

"... more things that require cooling ..." - What are these more things? They surely must have a name if they exist, and would be visible in the image too! Or is it a case of secret components that only bitmain staff know about and have been sworn to secrecy?

Truth of the matter is that cooling the LM75 results in lower reported temps thus lower fan speeds (and noise). Add to that, there are no discernible components, on the side the LM75 is sited, that require that much cooling. On the chip side, well thats got the heatsink / waterblock.

More pertinent though is that the LM75 temps are used just to govern the fans. In the case of the chip core temps, that is handled by the control-board software. So basically, if there was a substantial reduction in cooling, that would result in higher board & chip core temps and should the chip core temps exceed the thermal cutoff specified in the (obfuscated) control board code, the board would not send work to the chip(s) until the core temps fell below the thermal cutoff, and that would manifest itself in a drop of hash-speed. Clearly, that has not happened to the people who've done these mods.

So, unless you can throw more light on these ".. more things that require cooling ..", I'll just have to put it down to the usual dogie-waffle.

Just to reply to your question:-
1. Yes, your S5 will start and run OK with that PSU
2. Yes it can run on just one 6 pin PCI-E connector to each blade.

I say thus because I have run an S5 off a 550W server PSU at stock freq, albeit for a short time, approx 2hrs. The reason I did that was to test some 6 pin PCI-E cables that I had made myself and also to see whether I could get away with it!

Sine you are an electricals' guru I suppose that will suffice, but I shall add that the reason I decided against running it further was I'd never experienced that brand of server PSU (of which I have loads and been powering several EOL asic miners) blow that hot air before! That somewhat freaked me into using a separate PSU for each blade and confirmed that my cables were working OK.
