Suppress the crypto currencies so that you can establish your own digital Yuan. Nice move China. They claim they're preventing fraud but the main attempt seem to be to prevent capital flight. If this kind of legislation keeps changing Hong Kong then I can see the property value of those billion dollar buildings start to come down from their stratospheric pricing. The real estate market will be a good leading indicator.

Binance does not give you 0.98% per 7 days. It’s 0.98% APY - averaged over 7 days since it can change day to day.

Otherwise it would be insane returns.

Yeah 1% a week before compounding would be pretty nuts. That's like the crazy rates seen on Polo when everybody was margin trading the alts and people were paying 0.5% per day for margin shenanigans. It seems to good which means I should probably avoid it. Even though it's Binance nothing to keep them saying "we got hacked" and losing all your deposit.
63  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Do not trade Alts with BTC these days, You will just lose on: November 08, 2020, 01:18:05 PM
Catching the reversal or hoping to buy right at the bottom is very difficult if the whole market is on an uptrend, altcoins need fuel for joining the party. Maybe the alt season will start after the comeback of ETH but it can take a little bit more than expected. Buying the dip will give an advantage in terms of R:R, so better to buy with the amount we can afford to lose.

I think only the POW coins will see a rise when ETH goes up as lot of those 4GB cards are going to push their hash to those chains. Their networks will become more secure and there will be increased scarcity for a few. It doesn't necessitate that the price will go up, but it does oppose the price going down if more miners are on it. ICO coins will need advancements to pull them up.
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Do not trade Alts with BTC these days, You will just lose on: November 07, 2020, 08:17:22 AM
You have to look at history to see what people have done before. Most weren't around to see LTC go to $50 and then $2, and then there was ETH going in 2017, and gain another round of alt recovery. If you have never traded ForEx this is pretty much it - trading one currency for another.

If you're going to invest in alts - do it with fiat. If you do it with BTC the regret alone will make you stop trading. Dash, ETH, LTC never recovered from their highs and BTC dominance is still where it was 3 years ago despite a plethora of new 2nd/3rd gen cryptos.

Also if you stake it and don't have 99% or better uptime then you'll end up paying to stake instead of getting money back. I was considering it until I saw the 99% uptime - every residential and commercial service in California that I've tried cannot do 99 uptime. Plus I have no idea how much bandwidth that's going to take and ISPs may throttle that.
66  Economy / Economics / Re: What is causing last few days' run-up? on: November 06, 2020, 01:21:01 PM
Probably because it looks better than other asset classes. Interest rates from home loans are the lowest in memorable history (30year APR below 2.5% is insane) and if they move up just an inch prices will come down. Despite the market dips the overall indexes are insanely high compared to where they were 4 years ago - and this is globally, not just the US.

Tesla stock went from 178 or so last year to over 2000 this year. Bitcoin could see further gains...
67  Economy / Economics / Re: Iran accepting cryptocurrencies to avoid US Dollar on: November 06, 2020, 01:16:07 PM
The USA has been the largest bully of them all in contemporary times although in a much subtle way compared to China.
I'm an American, and I wouldn't dispute the above statement--and the US has been a global bully for many years unfortunately.  It's sad that our government takes all the actions it does, from military intimidation to trade sanctions, but there's very little the average citizen can do to stop them from doing all of that--just like trying to eliminate the death penalty.  Change takes place at a snail's pace.

As far as Iran's plight goes, things may change if Biden wins the election (which looks pretty likely at the moment).  I get the sense that he'll try to undo a lot of what Trump did during his shameful four years as president, so hopefully the US's relations with countries like Iran, China, and others will improve.  I have my fingers crossed that this is the case.

When China invades Taiwan, if the US looks the other way then relations will improve. You think Trump did the trade war for no reason? WW3 has started. India, Taiwan, Japan, S. Korea, Philippines and Australia know who the enemy is in their territorial waters. If Biden looks the other way as did Clinton, Bush, Obama then China will play nice with the US while holding stacks of USD reserve. Considering Joe was the one who announced the $535 million Solyndra free money grab I doubt he has the acuity to counter China.
68  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Let us discuss on hacked exchanges on: November 06, 2020, 01:03:41 PM
You could put the ETH hack the resulted in the ETH-ETC separation as a hack as those coins were more or less centralized to the DAO exchange. Also BTCe was seized by government agencies and those coins were not returned to their owners I believe, so I would call that a government sponsored hack Tongue

Then there was good old Trendon Shavers Bitcoin Savings and Trust ponzi - not an exchange per say but it was most certainly centralized.
69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: November 06, 2020, 12:52:53 PM
What's weird is that I'm running 3 PowerColor and 1 Sapphire RX5700XT and noticed that the power draw on the sapphire is a lot less than the PowerColor.

1. PowerColor Radeon™ RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 (base model) - 110W
2. PowerColor Radeon™ RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 (base model) - 109W (fan continually ramps up 100% - temp only @ 49C)
3. PowerColor Red Devil Radeon™ RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 - 112W
4. SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 - 95W

It seems like buying Sapphire cards would theoretically be more power efficient based on my small data sampling.

Measured at the wall or into the SW (miner)?

In SMOS. The rig is closer to 570 at the wall, SMOS shows the rig around 545. I'm not sure how to measure each card independently @ the wall without running each card solo to get a sampling over a set time period.

Basically if you want an exact number you run the rig with all GPUs. And then just disconnect 1 GPU at a time and measure the chance in wattage. This is a pain to do because there is no easy way to disconnect the GPUs, you have to disconnect the riser, and disconnect the PCIe power cables. If you have the riser plugged in without PCIe cables it will draw power and vice versa. Hence it won't be accurate.

You also have to do this with the GPUs at a hot temperature because the rig uses less power when colder than hotter. One reason is that the fans spin faster and I think GPUs in general use more wattage when running hotter, no idea why. However the SMOS reading is pretty accurate I would say at 545 from being an estimate somewhat.

While chemical batteries poop out in cold weather (due to their decreased ability to have the electrons transfer between cathode and anode due to slower chemical reactions with decreased ambient energy), electrical circuits work better when there is less heat. Hence the holy grail of non sub-zero superconductors would be ground breaking but we're not there yet. This is one of the reasons why high voltage systems are used since they pass a lower amperage and tend to generate less heat (like transmission lines and battery electric vehicles). And of course as mentioned the fans have to spin up higher per the fan curve and that's going to eat 5-10watts as well.

71  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to continue mining ETH on your 4G AMDs for up to 4 more month on: November 06, 2020, 04:20:52 AM

I can't remember which thread it was in (on of the more recent threads ie last 3 months) but somebody posted a link to the nvidia forums where a dev admitted it was an issue with a driver and that they had no plans to implement a change/fix to the issue. Oddly you don't see the same issue with the 1070Ti which is still hashing like new.

Damn if this how you remember, that would mean the end of 1070Ti passed 4Gb on ethereum if we can't find a driver that doesn't have this issue :-/
Hopefully this problem doesn't occur on Linux so at least we could migrate

I think this is the nvidia forum you are referencing : https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/blockchain-drivers/110847/12

Thanks for the link. That's actually another thread but same information. Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) issue is known and nVidia really doesn't want to address the issue. That's another reason why I would be weary to buy nVidia cards for mining. They really don't want to support miners despite miners giving them record growth in 2017. AMD may not be catering to the miners with the new gen cards but at least they came out with the speed decrease workaround within 4 months.
Maybe they want miners to stop using the 10xx series and buy more modern video cards Smiley
On the 20xx series, I have not seen a hash rate drop when mining Ethereum.
I consider the 1070 to be the most successful video card from the 10xx series, because it is still relevant today and has a low power consumption.

For gamers the 1070 was probably the best of the 10xx series cards, but for miners the 1070 has been a dud. The 1060 6GB is now hashing about 20% slower for 45% less cost and the 1070Ti is still operating as it originally did. The 1080/1080Ti have only gotten better with age. The 1070 and the 3GB 1060 were the mining duds.
72  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcoin betting on the 2020 US Presidential Election | Trump vs Biden on: November 04, 2020, 10:22:01 AM
Speaking of underdog value bets, there's a special on Sportsbet now for Trump to win at 10/1. I placed the max bet on it (1 mbtc) just purely because every other side is under 3/1 so well, that's value right there;)

Vishnu: so young blue voters just Netflix and meme-whine eh?Wink

I would be happy to do the same, but I missed that special. As of now, those are the odds on Sportsbet:

How quickly everything has changed, huh? Right now it's impossible to find 2/1 for Trump anywhere, so your 10/1 is definitely a great bet. I envy you . Smiley

I realize that it's immodest to quote one's own comment, so, I apologize in advance,  but, sorry, I can't resist from saying "I told ya, guys!"  Grin

~
I placed my bet on Trump many months ago, and today I bet the same amount on him again. Trump is winning the elections, whether we like it or not.

I suspected this odds flip would occur so I staked a position early on. Now that the odds are flipped I might make a counter bet. Either way I'll win. Sometimes gambling isn't gambling if you know how fickle human beings are. Good on you for catching that. I think it's fair to toot your own horn  Wink
73  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A gambler living in England makes a $5M bet on Trump on: November 04, 2020, 10:15:43 AM
I am surprised at that gambler, yesterday upon checking some odds on U.S. Elections, it is really clear, odds are favoring Joe Biden. This gambler got a perfect time to place his/her bet on Donald Trump since if you check the odds now, it's already flipped.
All I can say is WTF, I really can't believe it. Election still not done, I am looking forward to this bet!

Well people who pay close attention to detail might pick up things the media likes to ignore. I only found out last night that Biden didn't visit Florida once during the campaign - only sent Kamala and Obama. That's a complete waste of resources. I guess it was like his policy of firing 2 shot with a shotgun and hoping something sticks. Now he just kissed those 29 votes goodbye.
74  Other / Off-topic / Re: Space Debris: A Subtle Way to Doom Humanity on: November 04, 2020, 08:34:07 AM
And with the Starlink deployment on low-earth orbit, Kessler syndrome might proved to be true although several self-navigational instruments are surely inside every one of these satellites to ensure that no such collisions will happen--or at least minimize the risk of it from happening. This is actually one facet in the economy that is almost often looked over. With the advancement of humanity towards digitalization of almost everything, people would need to be connected to the internet at all times and as such, low-earth orbit satellites providing internet connectivity on rural areas is a growing industry, spearheaded mostly by Elon Musk and his company Starlink.

The implications of such a problem might seem miniscule for most of us, though in the telecommunications industry this will be a pain that they will have to endure since initiatives to collect space junk are just starting and most of them are still unproven for practicality, even though on paper they 'should' work.

The Starlink network is actually so close to the Earth that the satellites have to continuously boost back into position due to the perpetual drag they are experiencing. It is possible that some of the debris field that orbits from their deployment will get kicked into a higher orbit by another orbital launch such as a manned mission but that is a infinitesimally small risk - at least compared to the numerous Russian and US military and weather satellites that orbit at a high plane. Those Starlink satellites have to be constantly replenished because they burn up on reentry unlike the Kessler field objects which can orbit for millions of years.
75  Economy / Economics / Re: China is looking to get rid of the US dollar on: November 04, 2020, 05:32:22 AM
As long as they NEED the US they will continue to prop up the dollar but when they feel they don't need the relationship anymore they'll kick the US to the curb (or at least attempt to). They are still reliant on US "invention" and creativity and some technical know how - they've been trying to build commercial airliners for years and even with top rate engineers and supercomputers they're still having a hard time vs what Embraer, Airbus and Boeing put out. This will change of course but it will take time. During that time they don't want their USD in holding to got to the garbage dump.
76  Economy / Economics / Re: Iran accepting cryptocurrencies to avoid US Dollar on: November 04, 2020, 05:18:06 AM
It's pretty simple, Iran doesn't lack the means of paying its partners, it lacks partners!

You mentioned China and Russia

And these seem to be Iran's best partners right now (especially China). Besides, there is also Europe, which is not as strict on Iran as America (read, Iran will be buying Airbus instead of Boeing). As far as I know, Iran can still use euro, that is to say, European banks, which means it is not as bad for the ayatollahs as it it is reported in the mass media. A few years ago Russia was rumored to be selling more oil than it had been producing. Whose oil was that or whose oil was balancing out these exports provided the rumors had some relevance to reality?

So while it is possible for them to accept cryptocurrency as the payment, how is it possible for them to export their commodities without attracting unwanted attention?

Iran has been selling crude oil to China. This is not a secret

Yeah for all it's land territory and natural resources China was not blessed with dino juice. This is one of the reasons why despite Stalin being very powerful after WW2 there was very little conflict between USSR and China. They chose to keep the trade going on their "internal" border and exert influences on their external border. Iran has the oil, China has the semiconductors and the tech - Russia will just work as a nice envoy between the 2 haha.
77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ATI 5700 vgpu lower than 750mV? on: November 04, 2020, 05:12:59 AM
You're going to get at least 50MH/s with a Gigabyte OC with or without modding the BIOS. If you're trying to get best bang/buck you could do BIOS mod and get to the lowest vcore that your GPU will tolerate and that is largely dependent on GPU lottery (quality of silicon). Ambient temps and cooling solutions will also influence how much you can push your VRAM because it's going to get hot.
78  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold seller JM Bullion hacked to steal customers' credit cards on: November 04, 2020, 01:08:59 AM
Well this is unfortunately all too common a case these days, hell even credit reporting companies who are supposed to keep this info protected above any other type of company, are being hacked.  But this has absolutely nothing to do with precious metals themselves, and not to mention there is no reason to compare bitcoin to precious metals.  They are two totally different things.

They are separate items but if you look at the user base between gold buyers and the user base between crypto you'll see they overlap quite a bit. If you drew a ven diagram the confluence would be significant. As such the information stolen has more value for identifying a good target group by criminals as opposed to random credit card reader scam at a gas station.
79  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold seller JM Bullion hacked to steal customers' credit cards on: November 03, 2020, 10:41:37 AM
The stolen credit card numbers just get sold on the black market to somebody who could use that database of info for something more nefarious than simple credit card theft. There's quite a few people who keep precious metals at home and don't bother to even store them in a decent safe. Wouldn't be surprised if there was some blackmail/extortion involved with this on the list as well.
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ATI 5700 vgpu lower than 750mV? on: November 03, 2020, 10:24:50 AM
Here I use 725mv

1240 Core Clock, 1900 Memory, Hashing 54.5Mhs stable and using 130w to 140w at the wall

This is the best I managed to achieve, it's the limit of my GPU, Gigabyte RX 5700XT gaming OC

You were able to mod Gigabyte successfully?

My gigabytes are Rev 2 and i bricked those couple of times trying to mod.

If you don't mind, could you please let me know how did you mod?

I BIOS modded a Gigabyte rev2 card using one of the rev 1 bioses on the bios repository. It only added about 1 to 2 MH/s more, but it let me drop my RAM speed down to 880 (1760) and still get a decent 52MH/s. Considering I still have to use the air conditioning here in California despite it being November I'll take what I can get.
I modded using the method Red Panda mining pointed out on his 5700XT modding video.
