621  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you ever consider insuring your bitcoin holdings? on: January 13, 2014, 12:22:55 AM
A UK company called Elliptic Vault is claiming to be the first company in the world to offer insured bitcoin storage.

Quote
Bitcoin keys are encrypted and stored offline. There are multiple copies, protected by layers of cryptographic and physical security. The copies are accessible only via a quorum of Elliptic's directors.

The fee is 2% of your coverage level annually. Here's their faq page: https://www.elliptic.co/vault/faq

The part that I find really interesting about it is that their underwriting is done by Lloyd's. If that's not a sign that bitcoin is going mainstream, I don't know what is!

Go to www.grc.com/password and use one of the randomly generated passwords that Steve Gibson's site generates for your wallet password. Not to worry the password you choose to use never gets randomly generated again. Smiley

I'm keeping an eye on both wallets:

1FfmbHfnpaZjKFvyi1okTjJJusN455paPH
1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5GNn4xqX

I'm not sure if they would/could dump all the coins at once, but if they did how much would it affect the price of bitcoin?  The total between both wallets is around BTC175,000 which is about 1.5% of all bitcoins.  From what I have read there are arguably 20-40% of the total bitcoins out of circulation from early mining, lost bitcoins, and dormant wallets.  If you subtract that from the total it brings the Silk Road bounty up to 2% of all bitcoins.

How you watch the wallets?

I am sure the US Government is in for the money, simply dropping BTC175,000 for nothing is not benefit to them, it doesn't help make the US dollar stronger nor will lower the deficit. It simply could back fire in their face if the plan is to hurt bitcoin.

Max and Stacy talk about Bitcoin in the first half, the US Government plans to sells the FBI's bitcoins its collected from Silk Road next week.

New question,

What do you guys think about mixing and matching 55nm sub boards with 110nm ones, is it even possible?

625  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: January 11, 2014, 06:13:34 PM
Has anyone been shipped stuff from Avalon-ASIC through the Chinese EMS courier system? I just wonder if I will have any problems getting my module, the last time I ordered modules last year they came through DHL.

I used EMS for a module to Minnesota last September.  It went smoothly, although there was some special trick to getting the tracking number to work.

The tracking number works, at first I couldn't figure out where the verification code was then I realized they meant the one on the website. LOL

I am guessing that EMS accepts bitcoin as an alternative payment that's why Yifu is using them now.

627  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What's after 3TH machines. What's the timeframe? on: January 11, 2014, 12:32:48 PM
You still can't power 2500W on a standard home circuit in the USA.  Most homes have 110v wiring, at 15A or 20A.  That puts a reasonable max of 1500W per circuit, and even that's pushing it pretty hard for a lot of homes.  You basically require 240v for a 2500W system.  Many people in the US don't have access to that, or only have that wired for the laundry room and kitchen.

If someone can afford to drop >$10K+ on hardware, they can drop $200-$500 to drop a new power outlet in and have it wired professionally, or co-locate their equipment.

Really and what if the people who dropped $10k on a miner used bitcoins and not actual fiat money? I personally will never convert bitcoin to fiat as it's too risky, the exchanges don't seem to care enough to stick handle the hand off between the seller and buyers.

Was that block a taste of the new diff when it doubles again ?
Will we go down to 2 1/2 blocks a day avg ?

Uh doubles again? What exactly are you talking about? The difficulty goes up by 20 to 30% and the odd time 40%. It doesn't double. LOL

Request granted + Sauce.

Finally! LOL

Is there something going on with the site?

I haven't received any payouts all day today. The last one I received was from yesterday, and the transactions on my account match my wallet.

Thanks
631  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: January 10, 2014, 08:47:37 PM
I might just replace my defective module with a new one. Avalon ASIC is selling the modules for 0.20BTC new including shipping.

Thanks for lowering the price Yifu! Smiley

Next difficulty retarget occurs at block 280223.0 (eta 2.4 days): 1930710788.0 / +36.1% [est.]

Knc has said in the past they like to release their machines so the buyers get a decent ROI. At the current difficulty you need close 3TH to mine 1BTC a day. I suspect that Knc will have to really work hard to upping the hash rate on the Neptune's so the ROI is decent enough at their shipping date.

633  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: January 10, 2014, 08:36:10 PM

That will change in time as Bitcoin evolves more.

As long as companies know they have consumers by the balls regarding hardware preorders, none of this will change.. preorders.. refunds.. etc. When it becomes more profitable to have stuff in stock, they will have it in stock. When it's profitable to refund quickly--as they did in the past--they will do so.

I am just not sure who makes these ASIC chips, is it the companies like KNC miner or is there another manufacture like Intel?

There is a lot of really intelligent people on bitcointalk.org that know how to make the boards, so really the lag in the marketplace is the manufacture of the chips. I am surprised there isn't a company other than Avalon ASIC manufacturing ASIC chips in China, they certainly seem to have a lot of resources there.

Once the bitcoin world gets over this hurtle things will only get better. Smiley

Just submitted for my 2nd batch Neptune refund.  So that's one extra spot for an (un)lucky person.
Don't expect a "speedy" refund, some of us have been waiting WEEKS for their refunds to be processed, and I'm sure most of them are in front of you...

phoenix, you are refunding your orders?
been thru this too many times.....    only the two in the 13k batch... keeping all the others!

ah gotcha. sorry didnt see this posted before.
no worries...   except that its taking FOREVER!.... lol

(but still within the 10 "working days")

its always instant for a company to take money, but they take their sweet ass time giving YOUR money back. sigh....
Well, it will only make me hesitate to order next time... their choice... bummer.

That will change in time as Bitcoin evolves more.
635  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] defective hash module from Avalon unit on: January 07, 2014, 02:11:30 AM
If you a defective hash module that you want to sell please PM me.

Thanks
636  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: January 06, 2014, 01:11:09 PM

You would need to replace the entire module, the sub boards are fabricated at one large board which = 1 module.

I am in the same boat as you, my 29 sub board is dead for some reason even though there is nothing burnt on it.

There is a score between pairs of sub modules on some board versions.  I have used the heat sink as a support, and snapped the board at the score to remove a dead sub module pair.

Do you think you could have used a dermal tool to cut along the score. Snapping seems a little risky.

I love Dremel tools.

I was very concerned how it would turn out.  That is why I placed it on the heat sink, as it is very flat and had a sharp machined edge at exactly the right place to match the score.  My board snapped completely cleanly before I had depressed the unsupported end by a finger width.

The reason I ask is because I just bought a broken module from a fellow forum member.
I do not have a controller to use with the module.
I am going to try and separate the module into smaller units and build some Klondike controllers to interface the modules to USB.

Which forum did you find the broken module in, or you posted in?

I wonder too if all you can use a sub from a B2 or B3 in a B1, or if you need to find a B1 sub?

637  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: January 06, 2014, 01:08:10 PM
Question,

what's the longest PSU you can stick inside a Avy B1 and B2 unit?

638  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: January 06, 2014, 12:59:40 PM
smoothrunnings,

Yep ... Tried everything you mentioned and nothing works.  I believe I "bricked" the TL-WR703N module.  The reason I think this is that is I observed the TL-WR703N board during power up the blue LED no longer comes on signifying an attempt at Ethernet physical layer connection (i.e OSI layer 1 attempt).  This previously was not the case as the blue LED ALWAYS came on and provided expected blink sequences during start-up and operation.  Oh THE HUMANITY!!!!  Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any more ideas I might try?

Have a look at this tread it may offer you answer.

Kidding.

smoothrunnings,

I was upgrading FROM the 519 firmware to the most recent as indicated by Yifu's post.  I did try the reset button thing but that hasn't seemed to help.  The wiki doesn't indicate how long one should hold said button.  On the IP stuff No Wifi active on the Laptop and the laptop's IP was set to 192.168.0.22/24.  That should mean I can talk to a device listening on 192.168.0.100/24.  I just found the OpenWRT "Trigger fail-safe mode with button push during TL-WR703N startup" Wiki.  It says to hold the reset button during device startup.  Do you think that's the proper route to take to get back to factory default so I can then attempt to load the most recent firmware?

H@shKraker

Yes. I would have to used the latest firmware from CK, most Avy owners have had a better experience with CK's firmware.
